The ajin are a slave class. Humans can abuse them however they wish, they have no rights, and all the women have to serve in brothels.

The protagonist is from this class and has devoted her life to avenging her murdered brother (why just him and not, you know, improving things for all ajin? I don't know, I guess some people are only motivated by personal concerns). She trained as a warrior and has experienced lots of violence.

Nonetheless, she's quite outspoken, to princes even! and seems continually surprised by the injustice of the system. This didn't really jive to me. I don't think the author thought enough about the effect of growing up under the conditions described.

The character development continues in volume two. Rangetsu and the fourth prince get closer and for the first time in her life Rangetsu starts to trust someone. Now her life purpose includes not only revenge for her brother, but also protection of the prince. We are also introduced to the first prince and his servant. And you know what I have come to realize? This series reminds a lot of historical k-dramas, Moon lovers in particular. The palace setting, many princes, the political machinations, the intrigue, the danger and backstabbing. Even the fact that the first prince is ill and is not expected to live long, so he is treated with way less respect than the others. Basically, no one expects anything from him anymore and least of all himself. He just decided to be noticed as less as possible and to create as little problem as he can. And a lot of the time that means that he solves problems with the easiest solution. So when that could cost an ajin servant her life Rangetsu just cannot stand by and watch and decides to bring about some change, however little it may be. This volume was a good reminder that the world does not get changed overnight, you have to change one life at a time.
Thank you to Edelweiss+ for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The development of the story and characters continue to grow as we are given the next volume of The King's Beast. For the first time in her life, Rangetsu is questioning her own thoughts and feelings on the ability to trust someone. Most of her life is built on lies, pain, and suffering and giving in to that feeling of trust, especially to a prince of the Imperial Palace is hard. However, now her life has two priorities getting her revenge for the death of her brother and protecting the prince she is coming to trust.

We were also introduced to more of the imperial family with the first prince and his Ajin. I absolutely laughed at Ran's reaction to the first prince's Ajin and how she is like "he's so weak". Toma definitely knows how to add in comic relief when the story around the characters is just so dark. Rangetsu also seems to be the first individual to ever push the first prince on his actions or lack of actions when it comes to the wrongfully accused ajin. Especially after the first prince get's a court case where a young female Ajin is accused of murder and he automatically says "guilty" without even looking it over.

There is so much potential with all of these characters and I can definitely see Rangetsu getting that chance at a "found family" and having other's who want to protect her just as much. However, the drama is just unfolding since Prince Tenyou's personal messenger has found out her secret identity and she is still bent on avenging her twin brothers death.

And now I have to wait until December for Volume 3's English translation!!! I don't think I can wait that long. Toma's artwork and storytelling is just so amazing and I just need everything that she creates.

If being an ajin is bad, then being a female ajin is worse. But why should that be? This volume of The King's Beast starts to answer that question when Prince Tennyou's servant discovers that Rangetsu is a woman, and he muses what, if anything, to do about it. The answer lies in a hotbed of misogyny, failed understanding of sexuality, and good old-fashioned fear: once upon a time an emperor had a female beast servant and she turned out to be, like, a total slut who would sleep with anyone no matter what their rank and then she used her evil whore-powers to basically take over the imperial court.

I use those hateful words on purpose here, because that's the light this unknown woman is presented in: a dangerous woman whose unbridled sexuality nearly destroyed the court. Essentially, men found her attractive and blamed her for it; there's no indication that there was consent involved on her part at all, and while it could have been, given the way that ajin are treated, that's by no means a certainty. When we consider that now female ajin are forced to serve a mandatory term in a brothel, that sounds awfully like misogynist racial stereotyping with roots in a belief that women are responsible for how men react to them.

That's the system Rangetsu grew up in, and the one she's actively rebelling against. As she builds allies among the princes and their beast servants, she may be able to start to change the way the world functions. It won't be fast and it won't be easy - and it won't even be all that fair at times, as we see this volume.

But at least it's a start.

Rei Tomas work never disappoints! Everytime she releases a new volume of manga I get so excited because I know I'll get an amazing story, stunning artwork, and an unforgettable cast of characters. I love her new series The King's Beast so much I truly believe it has potential to be my favorite manga series of all time!

Rangetsu is having trouble keeping her secret under wraps, but she’s also finding her own prejudices unraveling as well. Meanwhile, the first prince is half-assing a murder investigation and his own beast-servant might just learn a lesson from it about complacency.

This book. Phew. I remember liking the first volume quite a bit, with some reservations about the characterization, but this one just knocks it out of the park, weaving a full and satisfying tale of intrigue and injustice through its pages.

Partly it’s because of how relentlessly depressing this world is - Rangetsu has so little left in life that nothing phases her (her reaction to her secret being threatened is heartbreaking) and we see time and again that the treatment of the ajin offers them so little hope or joy only to snatch it away when adversity threatens any humans, as the ajin bear the brunt before anyone else.

Watching Rangetsu struggle with her desire to trust Prince Tenyou versus literally everything else that has happened in her life to this point is some seriously engaging storytelling. I think we are likely taking the obvious route to a very forbidden romance, but this series has surprised me more than once, so I appreciate the uncertainty. He may be a little too good to be true, or incredibly naive, but there’s plenty of nuance from everything else.

Case in point, the chapter where Rangetsu gets discovered, besides dripping with potential intrigue for the future, offers the less common take that some earth-shattering secrets are more dangerous for the discoverer than the person with the secret (side note - the art is amazing as usual, but Rangetsu’s face in one particular moment is just a study of pure cold-blooded intent).

There’s also a very interesting flash of previous history as to why there are no female ajin in the palace and it explains a lot of the prejudice towards the female ajin, even though the story itself is dripping with those very same prejudices - it’s excellent historical fleshing out as to why Rangetsu’s gender is such a time bomb.

The back part of the book involves the first prince and his beast-servant, Taiga. We see that Taiga may once have burned bright, but the horrible reality he’s lived as a servant, being the exception to most ajin rules, has numbed him to pretty much everything.

When Rangetsu impulsively sticks her nose into a very lop-sided murder investigation, well, she shows that she and Tenyou truly want to try and fight for what’s right. This part is really good, especially the outcome, which shows that there aren’t easy solutions to the people or problems in this world, even with the best intentions (the near-echoing of two characters’ sentiments, from very different places, at the end is so well done).

Minus Tenyou’s boundless optimism and the first prince’s traditional sickly child role (unless he turns out to be an evil puppet master the whole time), there’s nothing that feels trite or unearned in this volume. From Rangetsu’s initial tantrum through to the ending I was engrossed.

5 stars. Sure, we don’t get a lot of movement on the whole murder of Rangetsu’s brother, but it turns out that this book can use that as a driving force but also go in for some crazy good characterization while it’s at it. I was perfectly fine with the first volume, but this is now a must-read for me going forward.

Through a sheen of water, I can see... a radient sparle. I know I'm not imagining... that you... look like a ray of light. — Ko Rangetsu

Warnings: Nothing beyond the known racism of the verse.

I can't wait to get my hands on Volume 3. There is a mystery here that I want to know the answer to. Not that I'm going to know anytime soon this is an overarching story arc that will take a while to sort out. This isn't going to have a simple answer especially if there is Palace intrigue involved, there is no such thing as straight talking in a palatial setting. This is a good continuation of the previous volume, we see some lovely good development in characters and plot.

Volume 2 picks up exactly where Volume 1 ends mid-conversation between Rangetsu and Tenyou in Second Prince Reiun's section of the Imperial Palace. It leads into one of the oddest scenes. There is an either playful/teasing or tantrum-esque chase through Reiun's section space. There is a deep seriousness about it but only between the Rangetsu and Tenyou. No one else seems to know wtf is going on. Prince Reiun's beast-servent, Youbi is the one who picks up on the teasing aspect. I never would have seen it if he hadn't.

Some comments
"Rangetsu!"
"Humans...
...especially those ine the Impial family...
...can't be trusted."
"Rangetsu... You're the one drwing lines...
...and pushing people away."
"What...
What am I supposed to believe in...
...whe the world is so rotten?!"
— The aforementioned chase this is how it starts. It's gives you some idea of why Prince Tenyou is chasing Rangetsu. It is definitely him trying to prove a point. (Rangetsu)
• As expected, this is now getting a romance angle to it. Rangetsu is definitely developing a crush on Tenyou. It's clear in his language and just the way Rangetsu perceives Tenyou now. I like the way it is done, for someone that had lived a hard life kindness and an ally is going to develop a crush. Unfortunately, Rangetsu's secret is known now but only by one person. The person that is possibly the most problematic in this situation.
• Okay, so Prince Oushin is fun. He comes across as bubbly but is described as sickly and passive. Passive doesn't seem to fit. He is First Prince the heir to the kingdom (and so marked for death by the series title) Tenyou reminds the reader of the expectation upon him.
• I want to know how Sogetsu died now. We get some idea, it was brutal. It is completely unsurprising to me that Tenyou is more than a little bit traumatised by it.
I've never... met someone like this before. Neither feale... nore male. Neither human... nor beast. — As is expected, Rangetsu is the beast-servent of legend. It's isn't outright stated, but it's getting implied. This is one of the sections from someone other than Rangetsu's perspective. In this case, it is Taihaku, the Prince's attendant, talking about Rangetsu. (Taihaku)
• The ending is adorable, Rangetsu essentially gets adopted.

The world Rei Toma has created is cruel, but in volume 2 of The King’s Beast, we get some hope for the future as Rangetsu starts to learn who she can trust in what is otherwise a pit of vipers. I absolutely loved this 2nd installment of this series and if you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend that you do. You view a preview of both volumes on the @vizmedia website.
I’m really enamored with our protagonist; she’s tenacious and her vengeful determination is pretty exciting to read about. I also love seeing that Rei Toma’s artwork has improved in leaps in bounds. Her characters have always been beautiful, but it’s nice seeing much more detailed background art than in her previous work. It really helps bring the story to life.
🍓✨
And finally, while I know that this story will eventually lead to a romance...because come on, it has to, I am glad that it’s not at the forefront of the storytelling so far. That just my personal preference. I know that may surprise you, but I don’t really read shojo for the romance. I just like reading stories written by women, for women.

4.5/5 stars (rounded up to 5)

This series is so enjoyable! A lot of fictional stories have a princess with her stoic, male guard; Yona of the Dawn and Kamisama Kiss are two of my favorite series with that trope. However, this series has a kind, gentle, and intelligent prince with a strong, stoic, and skilled female guard! I really enjoy their interactions!

The plot is increasingly getting more and more interesting! And, as usual, the art is lovely! I highly suggest this series!

Content: please see my review for volume 1. It's about the same, I think.

Love love loved this!!!!!

Finally getting some more character info.

So sweet to learn more about how Prince Tenyou intends to operate and the type of justice he wants for his people. Also great to see Rangetsu changing things up in the imperial Palace a little. Helping out an ajin in the First Prince's domain was really sweet, and it riled up the servant Teiga also. So that was super fun!

Rangetsu already seeing Tenyou as a light in her life really hit me in da feels. Cute.

As always, GORGEOUS!!!! GORGEOUS art style. Mangaka is beyond talented.

The fact Vol 1 and Vol 2 cover art matches up when they are side by side makes my heart very happy, also.

I honestly enjoyed this one a lot more than book two. You can see the start of a series and friendships building with Rengetsu and other members of the palace. There are a lot of dark moments in flashbacks and just the world as a whole, but the story was fairly lighthearted and solid. I liked the continued development of the characters as well as the world itself, and a further dive into the politics of the palace.

Cannot wait for book 3.

Ugh, I'm still so frustrated by this. The story is there but there's nothing happening... and Rei Toma cannot do facial expressions. This is not the sort of medium where I should be relying on speech to understand how the character is feeling. I can literally see their faces and I can't get an understanding on what they're supposed to be expressing. And seriously, there's nothing going on so far. :/

Okay, I really, really like this one so far. The setup was already intriguing in the first volume, but settling into the characters and their dynamics here really just solidifies it for me. Placed a hold on Volume 3 through a few libraries, let's see which one gets to me first 😭😅

Taihaku grows closer to realizing Rangetsu's secret, and regards her with suspicion. Tenyou's affection for his beast is filled with loyalty and compassion. As Rangetsu strives to trust and accept Tenyou, she can't help but be haunted. The system is divided where Ajin women can almost never reach high status, and humans are superior. When a female Ajin is wrongly accused of a crime she did not commit, Rangetsu will not watch and challenges Oushin, the first prince, to take action. Working together with Teiga, the prince's first beast, Rangetsu, works to help free this Ajin.

The King's Beast series is like water if I was in the middle of the desert. I would want the King's Beast to be written on my tombstone. Tenyou x Rangetsu is a ship that I hope to sail {It HAS to}. I don't fangirl. Then I read this. Well. . . let it begin. I am sighing-in happiness, smiling, and reading all three volumes consecutively in one sitting. This story is literally everything I could have wanted and needed..

A kind-hearted male love interest who seeks peace and isn't our typical male-brooding-total-jerk. Tenyou is so sweet. So caring. Rangetsu deals with such struggles as her past haunts her. The systematic racism in this world is sheer. Ajins are not treated as humans but as animals. Rangetsu is hard-working, striving to prove that she is capable of protecting Tenyou. Taihaku is sometimes narrow-minded, though it does make sense why he has his suspicions and rationality.

Learning about Teiga, another Ajin on the court, was interesting. He was passive and submissive, but there was more to him than meets the eye. Rei Toma has a gorgeous drawing style-I can't believe none of her other manga works are in my library. I love this series so much that I've distributed it to six other girls in my grade.

The action, the tension, friendship, and the reader hoping for a romance to aspire to, keeps this series never losing its flair. I'm going to write my reviews on books three and four after this. I will have to wait for the rest of the books to come . . . until then☹️!
