Highlighting the power of growth and healing, Phoenix is a poetry collection about love, heartbreak, pain, and forgiveness. Through raw, poignant, brutally honest poems, Phoenix will show that you can survive everything that tries to extinguish you.
beautifully heartbreaking and powerful collection covering a variety of mental health topics. extein's first full length poetry collection is stunning!
Beautiful poetry collection with different themes of love, self, and survival. I enjoyed the imagery and sprinkled illustrations between the pages. Highly recommend!
After reading Deveree's first chapbook, I wanted to see more of what she offered. When I read the meaning of Phoenix, I had the characteristics in mind as I went further into the poetry. In this collection, she did not disappoint me with the poems. It was a captivating journey of authentic & raw emotions from the darkest moments to the brightest. Like the Phoenix, the collection showed the transition from burning to rising.
There were lines I jot down & gained inspiration for me to write new poetry. Some poems stood out to me for metaphoric reasons, the rhythm or flow or rhymes, or even something relatable. The imagery stood out to me also because we get to see a lot of brutal moments & the execution of those moments was well done. I would recommend this collection to everyone that I know.
This has just become one of my new favorite poetry collections. Deveree invites you into the warm and sharp depths of her mind with this new collection. I was consistently highlighting and bookmarking poems and lines, that I not only related to but loved the beauty of. The way Extein uses metaphors is truly exceptional. It's hard to believe this is only her second collection, I hope to see more from her and soon.
The beginning of Phoenix was just as you'd expect, raw. The sharp and exposing poetry that I related all to well too. As the collection goes on, you can see the story of her falling in love, with herself and with her partner. It's amazing to see that side by side in a collection. Each poem left me thinking, and wanting to write poetry myself. It was truly a remarkable collection that I will be recommending to everyone.
What a beautiful book by Deveree! After reading her first body of work, I definitely wanted more. She delivered with “Phoenix”! Two poems particularly struck me, but I was drinking in every last word I’m every single page. I’m ready to read more again! The words will make you feel so much. Isn’t that what poetry is meant to do?
Phoenix is a very raw and moving read! These poems encompass the journey of trauma and mental illness and learning to heal from the darkness that is carried in the mind, body, and heart. The collection of poems are so vulnerable and well written. The imagery Deveree paints is so prominent and her word choice is so poetic. Highly recommend this book!
This is the first book that I've read from Extein, and I was blown away. It was a book that I simultaneously didn't want to put down but also didn't want to finish because I just wanted to savor it. These poems were so emotional and raw that they were challenging to read, but that just made the experience even better. As a poet reading these poems, I oftentimes thought to myself, "damn, that's such a good idea. I wish I would've written that or thought of that." To mean, that is the mark of writing an amazing poem, and I felt like that throughout this entire book. If you're looking for your next poetry book, I couldn't recommend this one more.
Phoenix, by Deveree Extein, is a poetry collection that I took my time with, because it’s the experiences of a young woman and poet whose truth and strength called for a quiet, slow reading. In both words and illustration, it is often spare and searing, cutting you to the quick with a bittersweet tenderness.
In style, this collection reminds me of verses you might find on social media, yet with more depth of feeling and artistry. This is a poet who has, like the mythical phoenix, burst into flames and arisen anew — with resilience that speaks volumes in verses, and a heart that carries her, and her writing, forward.
After reading, Flicker, I knew I had to get my hands on this collection. Deveree is a young author, but she weaves modern romance with mythology in an incredibly visceral way. This book will sit on my bookshelf for emergencies from now on.
(If you have ever felt your heart break, she wrote these words for you.)
