A Missing Comrade, Raider Attacks, and a Surplus of Plotting Enemies

Lieutenant Commander Beau Ward has too much on his plate. June is acting even quirkier than usual, the space station is malfunctioning, and his growing squadron needs new fighters to fly their missions.

Worst of all, finding a lead on who kidnapped Katy is turning up nothing but dead ends.

Beau’s pilot shortage is eased by a new arrival, and Katy’s apprentice may be green but he’s stepping up to make her proud in her absence.

The search for Katy is further complicated by the Kratch piling on the pressure with regular attacks. But do they have an ally on Uuru?

When news of Katy comes in, the only option Beau has is to ask for…external assistance.

Can the squadron take the battle to the enemy in time to pull off the most daring rescue yet?

Book #3 of the Lone Wolf Series sees the Marshall squadron still reeling from the events of book two. Katy has been taken by an unknown abductor, plucked from space whilst she was waiting to be rescued. In the meantime, other parts of the squad are suffering from losses such as the death of Hale who had been heading up the Marine squad.
Charli is despondent over the loss of Katy, and is desperate to find her friend, blaming herself for her going missing, and worrying about not only who has her, but what they could be doing to her. Jadd, Katy’s second in charge, is also very despondent, but has stepped up, using his fear for Katy and making sure her role on the station is performed properly.
Each of the team is falling into place at the start of this third book, with the terrible twosome – Jock and Remi ramping up their production of ‘Marshal’s Reserve’, the distilled liquor they have been creating onboard the station. Initially they were bootlegging it for their own gains, but once caught, the two have been funding station priorities, but allowed to create significantly more as a result. These funds have gone to Jadd (in Katy’s absence), to buy new starfighters, but the deal Katy had going is not quite complete. Plus, the new manager of the Fleet Junkyard is far more mercenary, and expects a more profitable outcome, meaning that Jadd has to find additional resources to get the fighters they need.
In this book, we are also introduced to the latest member of the team, a new rookie pilot Keeril. He is the son of one of the Trader Captains, who wants to join the fleet. The Captain wants Lobo to dissuade him from this course of action, and return to the family business, by taking him on as a recruit, and showing him it is not just about flying, that he will have to do a lot of other things he doesn’t like.
Meanwhile, the Raiders have come under new management, a new leader called Zarek, who immediately removes Iglon, and puts Nort into command, telling him to use whatever means necessary to get the ore they need, and remove the Marshals for good.
Book #3 thus becomes a very full-on story, with the team all working desperately to find Katy, whilst still working on their primary mission of defending the Tardex system from Raiders. This also entails continuing to build up their fleet of starfighters, pilots, and other resources that they have so that they can continue to fight as needed, and perform any missions that they need, including those with Marine support. The Marines are still trying to come to terms with the loss of their leader, Hale, and in his absence, Sgt Reece has stepped up.
The story is told from multiple different character points of view. We get to see Charli dealing with the stress and her anxiety over her missing friend, but also her determination to find her at any cost. There is the continued amusement of Jock and Remi, but also something going on with their distillery operation that could impact the entire station. Jadd is still reeling from the loss of his mentor, but has stepped up into the role she has left, knowing that he has to keep her seat warm if there is any way to get her back. At the top is Lobo, trying to hold it all together, dealing with Fleet, Raiders, missing crew, and dead friends, family and staff, that he has to not only cope with, but now manage.
We also get to see flashes of Katy, and the guard she has looking after her, which is a fascinating part of the story.
Another really interesting aspect of this series, has been looking at the Raiders side of the story, seeing their operation, and how their interactions with the Marshals has utterly destroyed them in places, impacted on them in others The Kratch who were meant to be so wonderful, do not seem to be living up to their name.
Attack Wing is a non-stop thriller, with combat in space, on the ground, and some political intrigue as well, just to add to the mix. Whist the combat sequences are epic, with stunning detail and description of not just the fighter battles, but the marines as they engage in brutal shootouts (and we get to see Charli in all her glory in this book – she is angry and unleashes her fury on those that deserve it), it is the Character writing though that is still the outstanding part of this series. Davis continues to portray these gritty characters that are captivating, and that you really become a part of, each of them you need to find out what happens to them. There is such depth to each of these characters so that you really get to know them, and as we get into book 3, they continue to be developed as well as the introduction of some new faces.
This is a must read for any Mil Sci-Fi/Space Opera fan, it is reminiscent of Firefly with that collection of misfits trying to save the galaxy, but there is also a real Star Wars feel in the combat sequences, that old school dynamic of the fighters going head to head against terrible odds. Lone Wolf Squadron is the must buy for the year!!

A little less “family” time, but a LOT more action

So this book is slightly different than the first two books in the series. While those have plenty of action, much of the storyline was focused on the growth and development of the “found family“ that developed from the frontiers of the federation. Unfortunately, book 2 ended with a little bit of a problem…. There will be no spoilers here so I won’t elaborate lol.

This book sees the resolution to many of those problems, although not all of them. It is a huge pleasure to watch this family come together and tackle those problems leading all the way up to the very last page. It’s pretty much nonstop action from the very first paragraph until you reach the end. If this were a movie, you would be sitting on the edge of your seat, gasping through the various and often hilarious action scenes. I’m just trying to imagine a pricolicci in an evening dress. And no, I don’t mean in her human form… Unfortunately, THAT scene didn’t occur, but it IS how I saw it in my mind’s eye… He he

All I can is you are guaranteed to ENJOY!

Liked this book a lot. With everything thrown at them, the team of misfits still manages to solidify their power in de region. When they have to rescue one of their own, no one is spared and recources are being spent. Like the new additions to the team, who knows the latest helpers will join their team also? Funny was the way the AI acted troughout the book. This presence makes the story somewhat outstanding from other space opera's. The different point of views lets you understand more of the teammembers motives.

I wish Hollywood could do this as a series

This reminds me of the wonderful stories of my childhood, the man who walked into a situation and as it grows you find the family is strange but somewhat a perfect situation to use the people as a way to bring yourself to care about their plight

Amazing really good stuff

On to the next adventure. The storyline has got teeth,no pun intended, to it. I like the way this bunch of misfits work together. Maybe because I can relate to them in a way. They also remind me of the Black Sheep squadron of WWII and Lobo is Pappy reincarnated
