Finally, an in-depth look at the things you can do--and the things you should avoid--to delay, slow down, or possibly prevent Alzheimer's disease and other disorders of the aging brain
Billions of dollars and decades of Alzheimer's research targeting the hallmark plaques and tangles in the brain have failed to produce a meaningful treatment for people with the disease. Drawing from the extensive research into ketogenic dietary intervention that dramatically improved her husband's early onset Alzheimer's disease, Mary T. Newport offers new and practical approaches to taking control of the lifestyle risk factors in our everyday lives that threaten healthy brain aging.
Clearly Keto for Healthy Brain Aging and Alzheimer's Prevention provides the rationale and a detailed plan for adopting a whole food ketogenic Mediterranean-style diet to overcome insulin resistance and provide ketones as an alternative fuel to the brain.
For anyone interest in brain health in the latter years, I heartily recommend this book. I'd already been slowly changing my diet for my husband and me to include some aspects of the ketogenic diet because of concerns in the area of diabetes and insulin resistance. These changes have already helped in many areas, and I was surprised to see a couple of videos describing how the diet can also be useful in the prevention of Alzheimer's and other dementias. This all led to someone recommending Dr. Newport in a comment on one of the videos. I am now a huge "fan" of this caring doctor. I believe, unfortunately, there are not enough doctors who care enough to be open to alternate forms of treatment which could be helpful. For many, medicine is the only acceptable route. I am not anti-medicine, but on the other hand, I do believe it's often over prescribed and sometimes does as much harm as good. Our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made by our Creator, and He has designed them to respond to the various forms of nutrition He has set in place. I love it when science uncovers the mysteries of this creative work!
So having now purchased the book, I'm very thankful I did. It always takes me a while to get through a book, but I wanted to write a review now because I'm already so blessed by the way it's written, and very grateful she has included all the many studies which have been done along the way. I think it's important she included these. I need to carefully study these as well before making decisions on how and what to include in our diet. Our well being depends upon what we do in this area of our lives. This book is helping tremendously with that. If you are at all interested in ketones and how they affect our health, particularly brain health, do purchase this book!
When Mary Newport's husband started showing signs of Alzheimer's in his 50's, there were few options. As he got worse and could no longer work, cook, drive, or communicate well, this NICU doctor looked harder for answers for her deteriorating husband. In other books, she has shared more of their personal story, including stumbling on the realization that MCT oil dramatically improved his memory and how she has become an expert and champion for coconut oil and a keto lifestyle. In this most recent book of hers she gives the background, science, and plan for using a ketogenic diet to help prevent and improve Alzheimer's symptoms. She shares the science and research for why it works and the options for how to implement this somewhat challenging diet. A worthy resource for anyone trying to prevent cognitive decline or implement a ketogenic diet for other health reasons, but not a light read.
In my role as a nutritionist, I have seen her speak on several live webinars. She has several books out on this topic, but this is the first one I have read. I tried to start with the most recent of her books for the most up to date research.
Lots of great information in this book. Dr. Newport’s husband was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s and prompted her work with ketone researchers to provide a better life for him. If, unfortunately, you have a family member struggling with this terrible disease and are concerned about your own brain health read this book. It is easy to read with great info on a variety of current research. Recommendations in the book are easy to incorporate into anyone’s life! She even includes easy recipes at the end of the book. Well done Dr. Newport!
