I attended my first US Grand Prix in 2019. I wasn't a Formula 1 fan. My friend dragged me along to entertain her because her boyfriend at the time was into it. They're Mercedes fans. I knew nothing about F1. Judge me. I scrolled through photos and found a team based on the cuteness of the driver. Don't ask. Or do.

All I knew about Lewis Hamilton was that he used to date Nicole Scherzinger. Cute couple. I still knew nothing about him even after attending the race. Anyone else start watching Formula 1: Drive to Survive during peak Covid? I wanted to dislike Lewis. He seems like he would be a rather grandiose character. Turns out he is one of the more humble of the lot. I'm very sorry to be so mistaken. Here's looking at you, Max.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher.

“Yet Sir Lewis has never forgotten who he is and where he came from. Lewis travels the world to encourage children to dream of a better future.”

If you have had any interest in motorsport over the last 15 years, you can’t have missed seeing Lewis Hamilton several times on a podium, holding a trophy. Born in England in 1980 to a white mum and black dad, Lewis grew up spending time with each separately after they split up when he was two.

He lived with his mum, but his racing interest was sparked by his dad. They watched races on TV, and later, dad helped Lewis get behind a wheel himself.

“he spent many weekends with his dad—watching Formula One racing on television.”

When he was five, his father gave him a remote-controlled car, and it was tough playing with the others kids, being the youngest and black as well.

“Lewis always followed his dad’s advice: let your results speak for you.”

Next, his father got an old go-kart and fixed it up for him. He promised to keep it in running condition as long as Lewis promised to work hard at school. But even with the best will in the world, sometimes the costs were too much, and Lewis had to miss competitions. That hurt.

But they both kept at it, and dad kept the car running so his son could compete.

“ But all that sacrifice paid off when Lewis was ten. He became the youngest driver to win the British Kart Championship!”

Note the angry faces of the kids he beat and the stunned look of some of the parents (I assume). He was invited to a big racing event and doesn’t seem to have been overawed at all by the grown-ups there.

“There, he introduced himself to Ron Dennis, who was the boss of McLaren, Lewis’s favorite car racing team. Lewis asked him for a place on his team and an autograph that he kept forever.”

What a cheeky kid! But not only didn’t he have to wait nine years, he was given a place on McLaren’s Young Driver Support Programme only three years later! He’s on a team, accepted and encouraged at last.

In 2007, McLaren signed him to their Formula One team, the first black driver racing in the Grand Prix series.

“During his rookie season, Lewis ended up second in the World Driver’s Championship. And the following year, he didn’t just become the first Black driver to top the Formula One rankings, but its youngest champion ever.”

His dad’s advice was good: let your results speak for you. Or as I am fond of saying, success is the best revenge. I realise that sounds a bit spiteful, but at the times you need to think of it, that’s possibly how you’re feeling.

He continued winning, breaking records, and getting royal recognition for his success.

Lewis and his mother after he was knighted in 2021 by then Prince (now King) Charles

“Yet Sir Lewis has never forgotten who he is and where he came from.”

He works with kids around the world, encouraging them to become engineers, mechanics, drivers – do what they do best.

“And every time he puts his helmet on, little Lewis shows that it is a sport that should be open to everyone. Because we’ve all got what it takes to win. We just need to show the world what we can do.”

I used to follow F1, and these days I see the occasional race, but I realise it’s sometimes a kind of niche interest. That’s one reason it was good to see a young fellow with little money but a lot of talent and a dedicated family make good - especially a black kid with all those hurdles to overcome. I’m delighted he’s trying to knock them over for the next generations.

Great series of books – loved this one. Thanks to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s books for the copy for review.

I received a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Lewis Hamilton is another great addition to the Little People Big Dreams series for children.
Each book in the series focuses on a different person (past and present) and how unique, different and amazing they are with the things they have achieved or accomplished or changed in the world through courage, determination and passion.
Lewis Hamilton is a world famous formula one driver and this book shows his life from childhood growing up with just his father, getting his first remote-controlled car to joining a racing club where he was the only child of colour to attend at the time and his rise to stardom.
The back of the book has further information for parents and older children to read, and the illustrations are just a delight throughout.

Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group- Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, for the advance reading copy.

Loved this short biography on Lewis Hamilton who is known for breaking the most triumphs in Formula One.

What I learnt and would like to tell the young readers while reading the book is that it takes years and efforts in becoming someone who breaks records in sports or in any field/profession.

Likewise Lewis started from a very young age. Despite rejections and loses, he kept trying his best until he becomes the best at what he does.

I would have loved this book more if the illustrations are a bit better and more easier to the eyes.

Calling all future race car drivers!

This is a fantastic book to showcase someone who had many hurdles to overcome, yet with love and a supportive father, he was able to channel his dedication and become a Formula One champion.

Lewis grew up in a low-income home with divorced parents and was bullied at school. He wants other children to know that we all have what it takes to win, regardless of what others may think. He also fights tirelessly for equal access to sports, racial justice, racial diversity in sports, and travels the world encouraging children to dream of a better future.

I loved how he verbalized his dream and worked towards achieving it! I also liked how he gives back to the community and the underprivileged and never loses sight of where he came from. Children need to hear about winners such as Lewis. We don’t all have the best start in life, but we can choose where our journey takes us.

I was gifted this copy by Quarto Publishing Group, Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

ARC|GIFTED|AD|NETGALLEY. This book shows a great example of perseverance and overcoming hurdles. Hamilton is someone so many children will look up to and is a great addition to this series. I especially loved how his activism was incorporated. This is definitely one of my favourites from the series so far. The illustrations are also incredible with so much detail included.

One thing that Little People Big Dreams does well is introduce children to people they may not learn about otherwise. Lewis Hamilton is one of those people. In the US, NASCAR is the racing norm. Not as many people follow Grand Prix, so the names are not as known or hyped. This was a great beginning look at a different version of a sport as well as a modern person who is making strides in all areas of life.

Another wonderful mini biography in this terrific series, Little People, Big Dreams.

Lewis Hamilton was certain small, a very young boy when his love for motor racing begin with his Dad’s encouragement. From radio-controlled cars to Go-Karts his destiny as a future champion in formula one was rarely in doubt.

This wasn’t without great personal sacrifice from family, financially supporting him and dedication to match his talent from Lewis. Often against a background of exclusion and bullying due to his colour and outright racism.

That he overcame this with skill and dignity should be celebrated alongside his championships and knighthood.

That he continues to challenge injustice and discrimination are also worthy values our children can identify with, making Lewis a perfect role model.

As the first black driver to win the Formula One World Championship he duly holds a special place in sporting terms but especially within Black History Month he should be remembered and acclaimed for his ongoing achievements.

A lovely book; in clear text and brilliant colourful illustrations. One to read and savour.

I cannot sing the praises of the little people, big dreams series enough! Every book has such cute artwork for kids and the diverse choices of people to teach children about is wonderful. I was pleasantly surprised to see one on Lewis Hamilton coming out in March. I think this would be a good start for parents that are fans of F1 or the Netflix show Drive to Survive to get their children into racing themselves.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this for review!

I love Lewis, and this was a lovely little book about his career and life so far. It’s targeted at children so short and sweet (which is why I gave it just 3 stars), but a great addition to any bookshelf with its encouraging tone and beautiful illustrations.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures. In this last little book we have the story of Lewis Hamilton, the incredible Formula One champion. He broke the record for most Formula One triumphs, and, after his seventh World Driver’s Championship, he was even knighted. But the thing that matters the most is that no matter his triumphs, he has never forgotten who he is, where he came from, and all his and his parents’ sacrifices.

This is such a cute book for any kids who are f1/ Lewis Hamilton mad or indeed any kid of F1 mad parents.

The illustrations are cute and yet I noticed the little details such as the inclusion of both his mum and step mum in them, alongside his brother, his sisters, his change in hair over the years.

It was a pleasant surprise to see his activism included and sends a great all round message to the kids who read this book. Life is about more than just the achievements you make but also your contribution to society as a whole. Love it.

I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

“Lewis Hamilton“ by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vergara, with illustrations by Fernando Martin is number 97 in the Little People Big Dreams book series for young readers.

Little Lewis Hamilton loved watching Formula One with his dad. When he got a remote control race car on his fifth birthday, he joined a racing club. He was the only black child there, which was discouraging, but his dad told him “let your results speak for you.” Eventually he went in to go kart racing, and eventually to Formula One racing.

This is such a wide and varied series, and I love every new one I get to read. This time around I learned about a remarkable racer. The art is bright and colorful and it’s another great entry in this series.

In this latest entry to this humongous series, we turn to Lewis Hamilton, the founding father of uber-politicised Formula One racing. Nobody else ever asked for the sport to be turned into a dull procession on the track, and a race-baiting hot potato off it, but Lewis seemed to get his way (until proving himself to be one of the world's sourest losers at the end of 2021 – not mentioned here). It's a book that seems to collapse into its own moral a touch early, too – there seems a spread less of the auto-driver-biography and one more for the platitudes at the end. Still, the global leftist media have decided he's the best thing since a sliced soft-top, so we have to seemingly go along with it as fact that the man is universally loved and an inspiration. If that's your standpoint, fine – as will this be. If not, then wait a few seconds – like Formula One cars in a world where over-taking is almost impossible, a more relevant contender will be along in a second.

One thing I love about this series is that I often learn about someone that I knew nothing about, and that is the case with Lewis Hamilton. I don't watch racing, so he is someone I did not know about, but I enjoyed learning about this wonderful, generous man. I read this book with my grandson, who was also quite interested in his past and present. Lewis' parents were divorced, but he spent a lot of time with his dad. On weekends they would watch Formula One racing and he was very interested in cars and motorcycles. Receiving his first remote control car at the age of 5, he eventually moved on to go-kart racing. He had to let his results stand for themselves, as he was the only black child in the clubs. He was the youngest winner of the British cadet go-karting competition. Shortly after that, he began training for Formula One. He broke the record for the most triumphs in Formula One and was also knighted. Lewis always remembered where he came from and he is now a campaigner for racial justice and racial diversity in sport, as well as an advocate for positive mental health as well as environmental issues. We talked about how he has used his fame in such a positive way and is a great role model for everyone, but especially children. As always, the illustrations by Fernando Martín are quirky and appealing to the reader, adding to the text on each page. I love the actual photos added in the timeline at the back of the book. I definitely encourage schools to carry this series and for teachers to use them when teaching about biographies, famous people and research.

This is another children's book from the awesome series called Little People, Big Dreams, which I am always excited to read more of.

This book is about Lewis Hamilton, who was inspired to get interested in cars by his Dad when he was young. One Christmas he got a go-kart, which was his prized possession. When he was ten years old, he became the youngest driver to win the British Kart Championship. When he was thirteen, he joined the McLaren's Young Driver Support Programme. He then became a famous and successful Formula one driver.

The book is full of lovely images, and easy to read text, which children and adults will enjoy.

I loved reading this book, which was very interesting, and I highly recommend it.

Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this ebook via NetGalley, and the following is my honest review. I intend to purchase a hard copy for my child's library in March when it is released.

I'm a big fan of this series. It boils down complex topics from history to an elementary level. I don't follow racing in general or Lewis Hamilton in particular. Still, this held my interest and connected this man's achievements to a larger picture of the importance of inclusivity.

Love the art style. Even though it's simple, the pictures are emotive.

Would recommend if your child loves racing or sports cars or if you collect the Little People, Big Dreams series.

The story of a man, who came from a broken family, yet supportive dad gives him motivation to pursue his dream. And he became the first black person who broke the record for most Formula One triumphs, and knighted. An encouragement for colored people who got more difficulties to reach for their dream.

This is one of the books in the Little People, Big Dreams series which I've seen absolutely everywhere. I believe that there are already over 100 titles in this series and more being written all the time!

These books focus on the stories of famous people, past and present and are designed to encourage children to have big dreams and to see that ambition and hard work really do pay off.

I love how inspirational these stories are and even at my age, I find them really motivating.

I have only recently picked up and read one book from this series - and loved it - so thought it time to take a look at another ....and Lewis Hamilton was my choice!

Again, I'm not a huge F1 fan - but my dad used to watch it and my son-in-law is obsessed, so thought it good find out more about one of the biggest names in the sport.

I love how concise this was.
Just a few words to sum up where Lewis came from and how he realised his big dream.

I love how this shows the reader that he was just a normal child - like any of the readers are - how he had his struggles to overcome and how he now helps others to realise their big dreams too by giving inspirational talks all around the world.

I knew nothing about Lewis before and I'm so impressed that he knew he'd wanted to race at such a young age - also becoming a world champion and breaking records for the sport.

I had no idea (not watching it) that he was the only BIPOC rep of motor racing and really hope that he can encourage changes in the attitudes of the powers that be and also encourage more youngsters into the sport ....

Having said this - it is such a dangerous hobby/sport - I really believe you'd have to have a huge passion to want to do this!!

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

Received for review: I received an advanced copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion. I was not obligated to write a good review nor did I receive any compensation for writing this review.

Why did I decide to turn the pages? I have loved discovering children's non-fiction books along this vein. So I was excited to give this one a go.

My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I really enjoyed this one. It's a good primer. Not a deep dive. But a good introduction to Lewis Hamilton. I can really see young boys in particular really liking this one. The illustrations were good. I thought the writing could have used sharpened up at times, but overall, I really enjoyed this one. I look forward to reading more in this series and by this author.

So why 3 stars? While I did enjoy it, I have read better in the genre.

Pages: about 33. Some are pictures though and aren't words.

Reading age:4-7 years of age.

Love,

Born in England, Lewis lived with his mother and sisters much of the time, but it was his father who encouraged him the most in his interest in auto racing. His father always told him to ignore any nay sayers and "Let your results speak for you." He started with radio-controlled cars, then on to Go Karts, and eventually became the first black and youngest Formula One Grand Prix champion ever. He continues to speak to racial justice and equality in sports and is an advocate for positive mental health as well as environmental issues.
The illustrations by Fernando Martín are fun, simple, colorful, and delightful.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!

Lewis Hamilton (Little People, Big Dreams Series) by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

As someone who grew up watching Formula 1 Racing, I really enjoyed this book! It was fun to see how Lewis Hamilton got his start in racing with RC cars and then a go-kart. The book follows Hamilton all the way through his championships in Formula 1. I also learned that Hamilton works hard to make sure anyone who wants to get into racing will hopefully have that opportunity in the future regardless of one's race, gender, or disability.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for allowing me to read this advanced copy of Lewis Hamilton! I would also like to mention that the artwork by Fernando Martin was colorful and adorable! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys racing or if you enjoy learning about someone who champions for causes both on and off the race track!

Little People, BIG DREAMS has the journey of Lewis Hamilton. The Formula One Champion had a life full of dreams that he made a reality with the help of his family and a focused mind.
Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara gives us a great story and timeline about the life of Lewis Hamilton. Getting a remote-controlled racing car as a birthday present marked a very important event in Hamilton’s life. What is more, is that he took his hobby and made it into a career. The trajectory his life took from then on is highlighted in the Little People, Big Dreams book.

The sacrifices the family underwent to get young Lewis Hamilton into races and competitions, and his natural abilities all are a part of who Lewis Hamilton is now.
Persevering and breaking into a world that was not inclusive of people of color, shows the determination he carried since childhood. After his father’s sage advice “Let your results speak for you” I think nothing was going to hold Hamilton back.

This is a very inspiring story about overcoming prejudice and racism and bullying and rising to the top through hard work and dedication. I find it particularly inspiring that Lewis Hamilton has used his fame to speak out about many issues, including racism, LGBTQ+ rights, children's welfare, and animal and environmental concerns. The people who make it to the top don't always turn to raise up the ones who don't necessarily have a platform to speak for themselves, so it makes me like someone more when I find they are vocal about these issues.

It is well-written, and the story flows easily and clearly. The illustrations are bright and colorful and cheerful and add to the story. I would recommend it to young children and early elementary students.

I love the books in this series and always find something new in them, this was a book that focused on a legend in the motor racing world - the great Sir Lewis Hamilton. In this book we get to read a little about his early life and his background where he started out racing in karts. The books shows that it wasn't always easy for him and motor racing can be a really expensive sport to break in to. Lewis is an inspirational character as he uses his fame to push topics such as ending racism in sports, child welfare and LGBTQ+ rights as well. I always enjoy the extra facts at the end of these book and the biographical timeline with the historical photos. The illustrations in the book really suit this one and it is another great addition to the series - it is 5 stars from me for this one - very highly recommended!

My son and I both really love this series, and this book was great! I find them to be a really easy, quick introduction to the person and their accomplishments. It’s a good overview, and we use this series as a jumping off point. Usually will get my kiddo excited about the person, what they stand for, and will want to learn more. I like that they have a more historical timeline at the back and more suggestions for further reading. I love Formula One and my son enjoyed hearing about Lewis’ struggles even though he was very successful. The artwork is lovely as well. This is a wonderful book for preschoolers and early elementary aged kiddos. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to provide my honest review.

Lewis Hamilton by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara within this wonderful Little People, BIG DREAMS series we discover tthe incredible life of Lewis Hamilton, Formula One champion.

Little Louis was born in France during a time when doctors were still trying to figure out what made people sick. During his teen years, he discovered a love for science and became famous for figuring out how to kill off damaging microbes. Through his curiosity and creativity (and lots of trial and error), his research led to the development of vaccinations, a vital tool in today's world.

These books were a wonderful find and great for small children to learn about these wonderful people of our past and in the present.

I highly recommend these books. I love them.

Another great title from the Little People, Big Dreams series! My family loves learning about the change-makers highlighted in this series, and this one was new to us. Lewis Hamilton started as a go kart racer and is now a race car driver who has pioneered the way for modern young Black racers. As with all books in this series, the illustrations were delightful, the content relatable for young kids, and the message of hope an inspiring one.

The Little People Big Dream series has introduced readers to a wide variety of incredible people. Sanchez Vegara has perfected bringing biographical information to a level for elementary readers. In this volume, we learn about Lewis Hamilton. The book starts with his childhood and the bullying and racism he faced. His father introduced him to racing - first, remote control cars; then go-karts. From here, readers see him persevere and overcome obstacles to become a Grand Prix Champion several times. I appreciate the author also including his humanitarian work for justice.
