From the embers of a burned America rises new hope... and a new threat.

Two years after an attack brought down the electrical grid across the United States, the recovery effort is well underway. A new network of armored trains carry supplies and industrial equipment crucial to rebuilding the country. But along the rails, one area of America is still mired in darkness, violence, and danger. Some call it the Badlands. Others the Wild West. The government simply refers to it as the New Frontier.

Retired Marine Sergeant Sam “Raven” Spears makes a living tracking down people and treasures in this lawless void. When raiders target a supply train in the New Frontier, Colorado Sheriff Lindsey Plymouth asks Raven to work with ex-Navy SEAL Calvin Jackson to secure the train’s vital cargo. All is going to plan until one fateful disaster changes everything.

As the trail heats up to find those responsible, a mysterious virus starts spreading across the New Frontier. Raven soon realizes the two events might be connected. If he doesn’t find the insidious forces behind this conspiracy, the entire country will go up in flames.

Reader Note: New Frontier is a brand-new series set in the bestselling Trackers universe by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. For readers of Trackers, this spin-off written with Anthony J. Melchiorri takes place two years after the end of Trackers 4. While Trackers was an EMP/war story about the destruction of the power grid in America and the chaos that followed, New Frontier is a story about the aftermath. For new readers, you can dive into New Frontier without reading the four Trackers books.

‘Facing the fires of disease and mankind’ – a superlative, and cogent, new thriller!

Two blockbuster authors team again for a new series, the New Frontier. Iowa author Nicholas Sansbury Smith, whose activities include a passion for racing (he is an Ironman triathlete), serving in the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, working in disaster planning and mitigation, writes best selling books. Texas author Anthony J Melchiorri, originally from Normal, Illinois, holds two degrees - Biomedical Engineering and English from the University of Iowa and eventually completing his doctoral in Bioengineering at the University of Maryland. As a Biomedical Engineer he develops cardiovascular devices for tissue engineering to treat children with congenital heart defects, working with 3D printing technologies among other aspects of this scientifically advanced and advancing arena of study. The literary interaction between these talented men is outstanding.

The authors set the mood for this new series in the Prologue: ‘The cool summer breeze carried the scent of smoke over the mountains. Moonlight bathed the mountaintops. Crouching, former Marine Staff Sergeant Sam “Raven” Spears sniffed the air. A few feet ahead, his Akita, Creek, was doing the same. After losing an eye during the Collapse, the dog relied even more heavily on hi nose than before. Hard to believe it had been only two years since the event, Raven thought. It simultaneously felt like the longest and the shortest tow years of his life,…’

The scenario is explained as follows: ‘Two years after an attack brought down the electrical grid across the United States, the recovery effort is well underway. If he doesn’t find the insidious forces behind this conspiracy, the entire country will go up in flames.’

Memorable characters carved out of the military mode bring this post-apocalyptic story into the realm of feasible, as issues of climate change and the ever-evolving pandemic are considered. That makes this novel not only immensely entertaining but also thought provoking! Very highly recommended!

Good enough to get the next one but, not like I can hardly wait for it.
Characters are well written. Action, suspense and a dog so that's a plus.

Raven and Creek are back! The Tracker world is two years older

And the lights are back on across most of America. Some things are returning to normal but a large portion of the American West is still out of control and now a new problem has arisen in the New Frontier. A deadly disease is spreading out from there, spreading like its namesake: they call this plague Wild Fire. A train carrying vital supplies to the Ranger camps guarding passages from the New Frontier was attacked in Colorado. The guards who rode the train, known as Steel Runners, fought valiantly to protect the train and its cargo. Some injuries, but the train rolled on, until Utah where the train was attacked again. Among the goods stolen from the train were several containers from a pharmaceutical supply company. Sheriff Lindsey requests help from Sam and Creek and he, of course, couldn't turn her down. Sam "Raven" Spears heads to the heart of the action and does what he does best.

I can't believe how long I've waited to ride with my buddies Raven and Creek again! And I wasn't dissapointed! Just like no time has passed, we're back in the saddle again, so to speak. Amazing action, wonderfully familiar characters and one of the best storylines I've followed in many months, told by two of the best tried and true storytellers to ever collaborate on a masterpiece, have done it again! This is, of course, a GREAT read! Everything I expected and more!

Trains. Honestly. That is the grand idea. A world in flames and the salvation of civilisation is apparently found on a locomotive. I half expected Thomas the Tank Engine to roll in and save the day.

The whole thing reeks of reheated pulp. A society collapses into rape, pillage, cannibalism, and mass slaughter within about a week. That is not world-building, that is a parody of world-building. If the great American experiment can fall apart faster than a dodgy gazebo in a stiff breeze, maybe it is not the eternal beacon of human civilisation after all. Yet here we are, once again, with characters pounding their chests chanting USA! USA! USA! as if mindless patriotism can somehow glue the shattered pieces back together.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the inherent “goodness” of the place. It reads less like a defence of America and more like a grim confession that the whole thing was always a house of cards.

And then, as if cliché bingo was not already complete, along trots another dog. This one has one eye. Because of course it does. Apparently, no post-apocalyptic novel is allowed out of the house without its canine sidekick, preferably damaged in some way to give the illusion of depth. We are meant to believe this mutt carries mystical significance, but in truth it is just another prop, a furry deus ex machina.

The lack of originality is suffocating. The plot is paper thin, every beat so derivative you can predict the next chapter before you turn the page. Characters are barely sketched in, their inner lives as hollow as the abandoned train carriages they stumble through. There is no strong hook, nothing to keep you reading except morbid curiosity about what hackneyed trope will roll out next.

What Sansbury Smith serves up here is a pantomime of apocalypse: men with guns, roving hordes, the same recycled dialogue, all marching under the tattered banner of American exceptionalism. It is shallow, lazy, and worst of all, boring.

“Wild Fire” is not a novel so much as a karaoke act: all the familiar noises, none of the originality. One and a half stars, and that feels indulgent.

This review is part of a 3-part summary I've completed for the entire trilogy of "New Frontier". As a privileged member of the beta review team, I wanted to put all of my thoughts together in one overview to accompany my own final "non-stop" read-through of the finished books!

+++++
Book 1
"Wild Fire"

This was the New Frontier, the Badlands, a place that could swallow even the most hardened warriors without a trace.

I was so thrilled to find out that authors Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony Melchiorri were continuing the "Trackers" series! This had been my favorite 'completed' series of theirs that I had read at the time and certainly didn't discourage me from trying out essentially everything both gentlemen had in their respective or combined libraries! And this new re-incarnation of a US struck essentially lame by a violent North Korean-led EMP attack doesn't disappoint, at least not judging from the immediate impact of the prologue of Book 1! Raven and his faithful dog Creek are back, so hold on to your hats!

Fair didn’t matter in the New Frontier. Fair wasn’t part of the vocabulary in the Wild West. There was only victory or failure.

Just as in the original series, the authors not only bring back well-known and obviously tough players but introduce us to a range of amazing people trying their best in a world gone mad. And yes, these folks will go through hell along the way while some will even pay the ultimate price. It makes the entire story just feel far too real and even personal in spots. Added to that, the introduction of Calvin and Mouse and so many others in the Steel Runners was both inspiring as well as utterly gut-wrenching by the time the smoke clears!

The United States seemed to have turned into one big dumpster fire.

And the action! Just wow. There's so much to choose from but I have to say that the entire sequence with The Train (no spoilers, but trust me, the all-caps is well-deserved!) is one that will go down as one of my all-time favorite scenes in this genre by ANY writer(s)! And the battle scene in Moab with the (no spoilers) was amazing and extremely well 'choreographed' (the best word I can think of to describe this kind of prose), as were so many other scenes with Raven, Lindsey and the rest! This will be my lasting memory of Book 1 as all of these left me literally gasping for breath all the while eliciting a wild range of emotions. If you don't get excited with this kind of hard-hitting adventure, well, all I can say is you may be reading the wrong genre. Maybe try knitting manuals instead?

We have to stop the Wild Fire… the Reapers… stop ALL of it! We have to stop it before there isn’t anyone left.

All kidding aside, this first book was just absolutely fantastic! The best of both authors - who are already individually just masters at what they do! - is very plain to see and it makes the reader want to continue without hesitation! And with the foreshadowing we've been given along the way - which is so apparent to me now after getting a chance to come back an revisit this amazing finished set of books - well, there's just no reason at all not to keep going!

Raven and Creek are back in this awesome new adventure set two years after the events of the Trackers series. America is trying to recover from the downed power grid and the government has taken to the rails to move supplies from the east coast to the west, but some of that is badlands country run by outlaws and militant groups, and they don’t mind staging a train robbery, but the trains of this time are protected too, and by people like Calvin Jackson retired Navy Seal. But with this latest run there seems to be a mysterious illness tied to the newest train robbery, but can Raven and Calvin track it down before it kills their love ones or them?
This is a great new series (note you need not have read or listened to the Trackers series to start this one, but it is still a wonderful series too) by Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony Melchiorri. This book has the non-stop action and suspense we have come to love. The audio narrator Bronson Pinchot did a great job and has really settled into to this series well. I can’t wait for more.

A couple years after "the collapse," the country is rebuilding. Priority is to the more populated east coast, leaving Colorado as part of "the Badlands" or "New Frontier." Building on the rail theme from previous books, the nation is supplied by armored trains protected by ex Military members called "Steel Runners." When a train is attacked carrying a crack team led by ex SEAL Cal Jackson and most of his team are killed, our favorite hero Raven Spears and his dog Creek are tasked to help track down who is responsible. To make matters worse, a bad plague is spreading throughout the frontier called "Wild Fire." Great story with many of the same characters and stories as the Tracker series. Lots of action, a good bit of military humor, and solid story line. Very entertaining!

While Raven Spears and his Akita "Creek" take a job to locate an older couple lost during the Collapse, it doesn't take long before trouble heads in their direction. The lack of law and order in this post-apocalyptic new world leaves many to fend for themselves. Despite Raven's wealth of knowledge when it comes to living off grid, there remains a bevy of ways to become ensnared in trouble. One of which is a frightening new plague. I really enjoyed this latest installment. It ticks all the boxes and I'm really happy that Creek didn't lose any body parts this time. Highly recommended, although it's always best to start with the first book in the series.

So happy to see Raven and Creek return in a brand new series, New Frontier! If you haven't listened to the first series, Trackers, I highly recommend it! I've been excited about this book since it was first announced and it didn't disappoint! Then again, none of Nick's ever do. Wild Fire, and the entire first series, is an excellent post-apocalyptic series with a great story and great characters! I'm happy to see that Bronson Pinchot narrates this series. He did a great job in the first series, and it's nice to hear the familiar voices as I listen! Can't wait for book 2!

It's been 2 years since the attack and collapse with recovery underway in many places, not so much in one area known as the Badlands, the Wild West or as it's known by the government the New Frontier. Raven tracks down missing people for families hoping for good news or closure while Lindsey is now Sheriff of Colorado. Lindsey asks for Raven's help getting a train through with it's vital cargo and of course it does not go well and to make matters worse, there is now a mysterious deadly virus spreading across the New Frontier which could send the country up in flames if not stopped.

great twists

Wild Fire is a terrifying ride through the aftermath of an apocalypse. There are powerful battles, utilising bow and arrows, guns of all kinds, even flash grenades and an RPG. So many good guys die. Some mountain folk and Native American appear too. Of all the most amazing characters Raven and Creed are tops. I could waffle on but in short this was a most exciting read. And I learned a little as well!

What a thrill ride!

I found this book to be a thrilling adventure reminiscent of Wild West stories. The story takes place a few years after North Korea detonated an EMP over America, so it isn't people dealing with the stoneage. The country has recovered, somewhat, and there is access to technology. There is a great deal of death and destruction, but there is also a great deal of good people. I recommend this book, but he ready for the death.

Great to see Raven back in action

I was tickled to see the continuation of the tracker series, I don't see how it took me so long to find it. Nick and Anthony did great job on the storyline it was another one of those I can't put it down stories, I read until 2 AM to finish it. Good too see that the country is coming back together nicely and they ?picked the perfect villains. Just wanted share that it's a great read without giving away the storyline

Good book!

I really enjoyed this book. A continuation of the trackers series it was much more "positive " in a sense that the 1st series. Still a challenging time and all but not as "gloomy". I really liked this book and the characters. Still sad to see characters die, but it just felt less "bleak" . I enjoyed the Cherokee and Sioux stories as well. They add a lot to the book. Great read.

America will Prevail

With a lot of the world, bringing America down seems normal. What is not normal are the American heroes who will always stand tall to protect us! Raven has normal skills as a tracker and with his loyal dog, he goes into action to help save America. He combines his talents with many others. This is a must-read! Now waiting for book two!

The Trackers series is one of my favorites and Wild Fire continues the series in true fashion. Nicholas Sansbury Smith and Anthony J. Melchiorri did an amazing job collaborating to put this one together. Raven and Creek are back in action joined with Calvin who is a new favorite. I already pre ordered the next one in what I hope will be continuing for a long time. Great Read!

Devastation

This was a page turner right from start. Really didn't know if I would like but author built such strong characters and a story line that can be very believable. I'm excited to delve into book 2. Want to know about cure and who are the people involved in pulling off this terrorist act.

Exciting!

What makes this story thought provoking is the distinct possibility that it could happen. Terrorists, in all their forms, are plotting the demise of our world. This is a work of fiction so it is an enjoyable read and entertaining way to spend some time safe in your own world.

The plot and character development are so thin I couldn't wait to get to the end of the book. I'm not sure these collaborations so many authors are turning to lately is a good idea. I've read Nicholas Sansbury Smith for several years now & loved Helldivers & The Extinction Cycle. I doubt very seriously I will read another collaboration book from these authors.

Great Start To A New Series

Excited that Smith and Melchiorri have picked up on the “Trackers”storyline with this novel. The direction they’re headed on leaves plenty of space for more action and adventure. It was good to see Raven and Creek hard at it again. Looking forward to what’s coming next.
