Ian had enough trouble trying to write for a living and keep up with his daughter, Lucy, even before she started shifting into a squirrel. Now that she’s turning two and breathing fire? All bets are off.
Olivia is used to her cat Seltzer bringing her live trophies, but she’s not sure what to do with a squirrel that turns into an adorable little red-headed girl, or the gorgeous single dad who comes looking for her from next door. Olivia didn’t come to Nickel City expecting to be swept off her feet, or to discover magic, but the next thing she knows, she’s taking a temporary job at a day care for shifters and discovering a hidden world of enchantment and instinct.
Ian’s dragon is sure that Olivia is the one, but Ian has already had one relationship go down in flames, and he’s not sure he can trust Olivia with his deepest secret. He’s going to have to learn to control his own power in order to save her…or lose her forever.
Full of humor and heart, Dragon’s Instinct is a sizzling full-length paranormal romance romp featuring opinionated pets and cute children, with a guaranteed happy ending and a lot of laughs. It stands completely alone, but is part of A Day Care for Shifters series.
Elva Birch is an author of the impossible and irresistible. She is a fire dragon Gemini living in Alaska who belly dances outside at twenty below in the winter and loves to find tiny fairy moss worlds in the summer with her camera.
Elva also writes SHIFTING SANDS RESORT, GREEN VALLEY SHIFTERS, and FAE SHIFTER KNIGHTS as Zoe Chant.
This one was ok. I didn't really love Ian or Olivia. Lucy, Seltzer and the rest of the crew were decent. I was pretty ambivalent up until the Ian finds out he is an elemental. I didn't really care for that and then we find out that apparently dragons can just choose and leave hosts whenever they want to and the dragon leaves Ian to go to Olivia. I skimmed pretty much the whole book after that because frankly I thought that was pretty stupid. But hey these are all on Kindle Unlimited, they don't take very long to read and the author doesn't make the spice creepy in every book (like some authors I have read). I am looking forward to the next book in this series that is about the unicorn family from the daycare and the magical EMT who helped Ian and Olivia.

4 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 - A sweet shifter romance with a little bit of steam and a lot of fun with just a soupçon of drama. This is an enjoyable short and undemanding read in a charming shifter daddy romance series that pulls at the heart strings.
Full Disclosure, I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for leaving an honest review. That said I loved it! It was sweet with a bit of spice, a dash of magic, some adorable toddlers, a smattering of heartbreak, and a twist near the end I did not see coming even after reading most of the books by this author. I love how real the characters feel even if they can turn into fire-breathing squirrels and dragons.
Elva knocked it out of the park again and I already can't wait for the next book in the series!
Book two in this series, it's a interesting storyline original about a shifter day care funny to.with a love interest. I did feel the history about dragons should of been explained more
Deeply engaging with great characters and wonderful world building; a favorite read for the year
Book two in the Day Care for Shifters series, this could easily be read as a standalone. With a lot of characters carrying over however, reading book one first gives you a lot of extra background on those characters, and helps fill out the world building. Plus book one is a great read in its own right.
I’ve been a fan of this author for a while now, and this book did not disappoint. For one thing, she doesn’t do cookie cutter world building, there’s always a twist. In this case, the world building twist lent itself to a major plot twist near the end that was so completely unexpected, and yet so completely perfect for the characters, it practically moved me to tears. Yes, it really was that good.
As for the main characters, well, there’s something about the single dad storyline that really appeals to me, and Ian is a perfect example of a frazzled single parent run ragged by a toddler, trying to balance childcare with a work life as well as shared custody with an ex, not always getting it right but doing the best he can. With the toddler also a completely adorable squirrel shifter, and a sometimes contentious relationship with his own shifter animal, Ian’s life is complicated at best. As for Olivia, she has her own challenges, both dealing with baggage from her past, and adapting to this new world she’s found herself in. One line in particular really resonated with me: “But smart and independent felt an awful lot like alone.” I *might* have really related to that, lol. Both Olivia and Ian felt completely authentic to me, and I loved the growth both showed over the course of the story.
Add in a storyline with a mix of humor and heat, plus touches of mystery and suspense, nicely timed pacing, and that major twist I mentioned, and this was a book that kept me deeply engaged. In fact, it’s one of my favorite reads so far this year. All the stars.
Holly’s Take Heat Factor: There’s an epic sexathon without a ton of details
Character Chemistry: “My dragon says that you’re the one!” But also they’re really cute together.
Plot: Single dad dealing with some stuff + neighbor who is really good with kids + the American West is on fire
Overall: A cute read
Ingrid’s Take Heat Factor: So many puns about fire and heat factor and so little time. They have many encounters and entanglements.
Character Chemistry: It’s a lot of cute, eager yearning and then it’s off to the races.
Plot: Olivia is not a shifter, but she’s hoping to shift gears and start over in a new town. Ian is a single dad with a massively challenging home life going on, and he’s immediately drawn to his new neighbor.
Overall: Very tender and entertaining.
Erin’s Take Heat Factor: I don’t think I’ve ever read an Elva Birch book with this much descriptive sex. (They go through a whole box of condoms in one weekend!)
Character Chemistry: Is it fated mates or are they just really into each other?
Plot: She’s running from her past, he’s running himself ragged with a shifter toddler, and there are some worrisome things happening around town
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. We disclose this in accordance with 16 CFR §255.
This was very cute and fun. Olivia is a sweetheart who has just moved to Nickel City to teach Middle School science and it is way more expensive than she thought. When her cat catches a baby squirrel who turns into a toddler girl, she is quite surprised. When Lucy's daddy Ian tells her about a shifter day care that could use help, she is glad for the extra pay. But getting to know Ian and Lucy as well as the whole shifter community is even better. But why does she smell smoke so often, and what kind of shifter is Ian anyways? This is a fun and exciting story with a different shifter world view.
The pace is fast and the tone is uncertain yet hopeful with a character oriented storyline that has some action and some steamy scenes but not a lot of details. The characters are vibrant and engaging. Read book one first and then you will be anxiously awaiting book three like I am! If you like shifter romances with a complex world, some action and some laughs, then this is for you. Enjoy!
I really enjoyed Ian, Olivia and Lucy’s story. Ian is a dragon shifter and divorced single father of Lucy, a squirrel shifter. They live in the shifter friendly town of Nickel City. Olivia is a human middle school science teacher and recent transplant to Nickel City. She is Ian’s next door neighbor. An escaped Lucy, in her squirrel form, introduces Olivia to the world of shifters. Ian’s dragon tells him Olivia is his mate. There is chemistry and connection between them, but Ian is unsure. Thus begins the cautious journey to their HEA with some push and pull related to secrets and fears. The book is fairly low angst and has a little bit of everything - sweet moments, light steam, laughs, cringe worthy moments, cute children, painful pasts, slight danger, surprises, and lots of swoony love. The story was well written with relatable characters with dimension and an engaging storyline. I’ll definitely keep reading this series. 3.5 stars.
This story was both sweet and spicy, adorable and heartbreaking with a twisting, turning road to the HEA. SERIOUS heartstrings get tugged in Olivia and Ian's story. Even though the story is paranormal and the characters are…unique…the characters are so relatable. Truth be told, I'm more than a little jealous of the heroine and the stunning and generous way her man demonstrates his love for her. (Yeah, I probably need to get out more.)
This story is a winner and I already can't wait for the next book in the series! Elva simply has a way of worldbuilding and character development that keeps me coming back for more.
Full Disclosure, I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for leaving an honest review.
Anyone else do a happy dance with the release of the newest Daycare Shifters novel? I desperately needed the serotonin boost from pure cuteness that is Tiny Paws Daycare. It stands to say that, for this reader, expectations are high. Did the fabulous Ms. Birch succeed? Heck yeah! It is a veritable cornucopia of cuteness with some serious adult issues (as in being a parent, how to co-parent your child in a positive way without trashing your ex, and so on) and steaminess included. There are so many twists and surprises that I feel that if I comment on them it would spoil the fun. I would recommend starting at the first book, because it would be more enjoyable.
What's not to love about a series featuring a daycare for shifter toddlers such as little penguins, owls, even an armadillo shifter. In this book, the toddler is a squirrel shifter who turns out to have a few added abilities. Meanwhile, her dad, a divorced dragon shifter is busy falling in love with the new middle school teacher who just moved in next door. They meet when Lucy, the little squirrel shifter, escapes the house in squirrel form, goes running next door, and is caught by Olivia's cat. Olivia needs a temp job for the summer, and although she's not a shifter, now that she knows they exist, she's a perfect fit for the shifter day care. I can't wait for the next book in the series. They are always a delight to read.
Ian and Olivia Flaming Love Tryst! 4.55*****/5 Spoiler Alert
Ian, a fire elemental/ dragon shifter, writer, and dad to a two year old squirrel/fire shifter, Lucy, met his soul mate Olivia, a bi- jilted transplant from FL, middle school temp, teacher. While Olivia learnt about shifters and worked at Tiny Paws Daycare, their trust issues were finally resolved when he saved her from being burnt alive. We met Becket MD, and Isadore, the Earth/Tree Life elemental helped Ian master his long suppressed, fire element component, while he transferred his Dragon to Olivia. HEA for all, as they learnt to master and control their other halves. A Fun Read!!
This was such a sweet and cozy shifter romance! All the feels of a small town next door neighbor meet cute with a few twists and turns to make it interesting.
I really liked some unique aspects of this read - chaotic squirrel shifter toddler, FMC abandonment issues and MMC having both a strained relationship with his dragon and also a secondary new surprise to him! There are so many concepts that feel so new and refreshing and made the book all the more interesting!
This book isn’t heavy on spice, but I don’t think it detracted from the quality at all. I would for sure recommend it to anyone and will likely read more from this fun series!
Holy cuteness in a baby squirrel who can do stuff with fire! I love how she enjoyed the cat and how they played together. The poor dad always losing her. I think he should put a microchip in her so he can find her! I love how you had elementals in this story! The baby carrying a plant around was hilarious. It never occurred to me she was an elemental. I just love the day care and all the babies. Fingers and toes! Its difficult enough to watch kids let alone ones that turn into animals! I can not even imagine how to deal with one who can catch anything on fire. It really was an enjoyable story to read and have some laughs!
I'm someone who has a very detailed and in-depth imagination. It's one of the reasons that I love urban fantasy and PNR genres, because I easily see in my head what I'm reading on the page! And this book was really fun, with much of it happening in the day care. Imagining myself taking care of an outraged baby owl, and at the same time trying to get hold of the wolf pup who is running around chasing the baby squirrel who is bouncing off the walls, I smiled through most of the book. It's got a good story and I'll be reading the next one. Hope you enjoy them too! 🐝✋🐺
Ian has a problem with trust. Most days, he doesn't even trust his sleeping dragon. When Olivia moves next door, his dragon takes interest. His 'instinct' kicks in and he knows she is his to protect. Olivia is thrown into the world of shifters, I have to say, she takes it quite well. As Ian and Olivia grow closer, she feels he is hiding something from her. If Ian can't learn to trust, he might miss out on his HEA. A fun read full of great characters. Lucy and Seltzer were my absolute fav. This is my honest opinion of an advanced copy I received.
It is a hot shifter romance. But that has to do with the types of magical creatures involved. What I enjoyed all the way through is that the main character, Ian was a great guy — facing all the struggles of a single parent without all the answers. As he begins to learn about community, and sharing that burden he grows into a relationship with Oliva, carefully with his 2 year ol daughter squirrel shifter as his first priority in his life. It is a beautiful story with the depth in the characters I have come to expect from this author. Thank you Elva Burch
Delightful and Sexy romp through a Shifter Society
Way beyond werewolves - picture dozens of toddlers learning to control their various alter-egos in a daycare set up just for shifters, while learning to keep the secret from the general public (and how to shift With their clothes so they don't pop back naked!) "Fingers and Toes" goes the alert when a member of the General Public approaches, so no squirrels, wolf-cubs, armadillos or dragons appear inappropriately. (The whole series will keep you giggling in bed. (or wherever you read your light fiction!)
A magical, fun, warm story about family, friendship, and lovers
I started laughing right away with chapter 1. It was so funny that I read chapters 1 through 3 aloud to my 96-year-old aunt who laughed along with me. There were humorous moments throughout the story, as well as delightful character reveals with the children; family-and-friend relationship development; shifter-and-their-inner- animal relationship growth; delightful discoveries involving magic; and two adults learning to speak their truths.
Ian is basically a single father to a two year old shifter child who is trying to write his second novel while taking care of his girl. Olivia has just arrived in town to teach at the middle school in the fall. She discovers the shifter world when her cat carefully brings home a squirrel who then turns into a little girl. Ian is trying to get her into the sifter daycare and suggests Olivia work there for the summer. They are neighbours so Ian and Olivia see each other a lot and things go on from there. This is a delightful romp with children and romance and laughs. A great book.
This is book two of A Day Care for Shifters. I found it just as amazing as the first and once again I was hooked start to finish. This time our couple was Olivia and Ian and the adorable child was Ian's daughter Lucy. What is a single dad dragon shifter to do when he meets his mate but he's dealing with his two year old, squirrel shifter daughter who can also breathe fire. I loved the romance, laughs and twists. I can't wait to read what Elva Birch has in store next.
Fun story and I was thoroughly entertained. I can't imagine how hard it would be to raise a squirrel shifter, let alone handle one when they were not quite two. Gives a whole new meaning to the terrible twos. Anyway, the author did a very good job of describing it and writing a story that didn't marginalize the children as it captured the romance between the adults. The book has some sizzle and quite a few laughs.
Fire Breathing Squirrel, Dragon and A Fire Elemental... Oh My!
Relying on your instincts can not always go right! These shifters are different then most, which makes them unique to the authors imagination and creativity😃. The adventure takes you on a journey of discovery and being part of community. Love these characters and the kids just make you smile when their antics and developments. Ok next!
Quite happily reading along, even though it was a bit slow going, with nothing really happening, then we get the twist about Olivia’s ex Sunny. WTH. NOTHING has been implied that Olivia is bisexual. Totally threw me out of the story, especially as it neither added nor changed the storyline, or defined their lives going forward. Unless she decides later on she wants a change of sexual orientation once again. Not sure what to make of this, though I really enjoyed Lucy and her antics. Ian and his heritage proved entertaining and different. But then we get a dragon just deciding to change who he shares himself with and he just hops into a new host. So Ian loses his dragon soul and Olivia becomes a dragon shifter. Too weird. Read in the box set.

Fire breathing squirrels? Cat a squirrel and turns into a child? Yep... makes for a great meet-up for one single dad and a fully human neighbor.
There is more I could say about this, but I won't. Reading Book 1 sets context, but it isn't necessary to enjoy Book 2. If you like shifters, single dad meets love of live, then this is for you!
2 for spice. 4 stars because I will only read it once!
While the story starts off seeming to be another dragon meets human mate plot, it quickly explodes into a much more complex scenario. The character development is great. The toddlers, especially Lucy, are very realistic even though they are supercharged being shifters. Olivia and Ian follow a more predictable path with trust being the make or break factor. I had trouble putting the book down at night.
Absolutely loved it! it's so cute, cozy, and has that bit of spice that just brings it all together!
While there are some editing details that sometimes have you go back to reread and make sure it wasn't your eyes that missed a word, it's not terrible and it really is a very fun, low-stakes read with a happy ending that you can just relax and enjoy :)
I really enjoyed the characters, Lucy is such a little wild card! She's hilarious! I would love to have a novella about these two to see how everything is going, they are so adorable!!
Another great story about the magic is Nickel City!
You really can’t go wrong with a visit to the world Elva Birch created. She adds her own interesting twists to shifter lore and there are a few unexpected but wonderful twists in Ian and Olivia’s story. Can’t wait to read the next one.
