Love Lessons

He needs an image makeover, she needs a mojo upgrade. A new lessons-in-seduction hockey romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Sarina Bowen.

After I’m arrested for throwing a raucous party, my hockey team says I have an image problem. And I need to fix it, stat.

Charity work? Check. Haircut? Sure. But I draw the line at hiring my neighbor to style me. In the first place “style” shouldn’t be a verb. And I’m tired of people who’d judge me on appearances.

Vera and I don’t see eye to eye on anything. She wants me to try on clothes, while I just want to remove hers. She's distractingly pretty, with soulful eyes and a sinful mouth that likes to argue with me.

But when management threatens my summer vacation, I grudgingly agree to Vera’s unusual proposal: she’ll give me an image makeover. But in return, she wants lessons in the art of seduction.

It sounds a little nutty, but I know a good opening when I hear it. Besides, it’s not like I’ll ever fall for her…

Oh Wow!!!! Anticipation never felt sooooo good!

Vera had a problem that, evidently, only bad boy Ian Crikey could fix!

Her last relationship had left her feeling "inadequate" in the bedroom.... (Hmmmm, how many of us have also unfairly shouldered the blame in a similar manner for failed bedroom antics?)

Ian is more than ready, willing and able to bring Vera out of her self-imposed dry spell and show her what a truly passionate woman she is. Deprogramming Vera was all pleasure and no pain... well, almost no pain! - for rough and tumble Ian Crikey.

The chemistry between these two was totally off the charts. The banter was hilarious, and the descriptions of Italy had me looking for my passport and checking my work calendar!

Loved that slow progression of attraction and then outright undeniable lust that had them seeking each other out for MORE illicit interludes! (And I thoroughly enjoyed each stolen moment!)

Ian is the one who gets a makeover in this story: I love how Sarina Bowen turned this well-worn trope on its ear. Normally, in a rags to riches romance, it is the heroine who gets a beautiful new wardrobe once she has captivated her prince.

The various plot lines and subplots kept me enthralled throughout. The passionate make-out scenes were beautifully written. Vera and Ian fairly sizzled off the written page, right into my over-heated imagination!

I'm giving this one all the stars - I was vicariously entertained and transported (no luggage required!) to an exotic locale, wined, dined and seduced right along with this mismatched couple. Highly recommended!
My thanks to the author, her publisher and publicist for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

"Seduction is all about anticipation. That's why I spent the whole night torturing us both."
This was fun. Sexy, steamy fun, heartwarming fun, cute fun, and romantic fun. I love to lose myself in Sarina's books because I always feel so good at the end - she always has the happily ever after the characters deserve, and the one I'm craving.
I loved these two together, and the fast pacing of the book was just what I needed.

"He tastes like heat, and he kisses like a sinner."
Ian is a no-brainer for me. The professional hockey player who doesn't commit and who apparently has the body of a fitness influencer (yeah, that works), sexy as all hell, and with some killer moves, but is also... more. On the outside, he's all fun and games, but on the inside... something happened on the ice that changed him, and he's trying to cope with it. On his own. Because he doesn't know any better.

"She takes another glance at me, like she can't help herself. And suddenly there are way too many people on this terrace."
I struggled a bit with Vera at first, but then I got her. I don't see her as uptight at all, she just didn't have a wonderful life growing up, so she's guarded. Add to it the fact that her ex-boyfriend is an asshole, and can you blame her for being self-conscious? For thinking she'll never have what other people have? I can't. I think that myself from time to time.

"Could I even handle a night with Ian? If he takes off those trousers, I might just faint."
These two are neighbors. She's really attracted to him, but shy about it. He feels drawn to her, but keeps his distance. It works for them, since they have their own professional lives and seem like total opposites.
However, now they're off with friends to Italy on vacation, what happens when they're together in close quarters?

"Touch me," he whispers. "You know you want to."
It just so happens that Vera is not very experienced, and the way her last relationship ended didn't help with her self-esteem. But maybe there's a chance to get back together with her ex, or maybe to get back at him for being an ass. Now if only she could master the art of seduction and learn a thing or two...
Wait! Sexy hockey player in the room next door to the rescue. And no, this was not a chore for him either. Loved the chemistry and the tension, and even though there wasn't that much steam, it was the right amount for them.

"This is what it's supposed to feel like. It's powerful to make a man growl with need."
I loved the character development for both of them, as well as their journey. As their sexy 'lessons' continue, you see a change in Vera: she's not as self-conscious, she opens up, she trusts more. She starts to believe that she can seduce a man. The changes in Ian are obvious – who knew he's like to sleep alongside someone else all night? And has he been seduced in the meantime? Well...
They're so good for each other, but they also fight a lot. Honestly, it felt like avoidance and foreplay to me, so I liked that too.

"But when she whispers my name, I'm lost. And I don't even think I care."
They're in their own bubble, but their vacation comes to an end, and reality hits. Are they really going somewhere with this? Is Vera really going to go through with the ex plan? Is Ian ready for a relationship? Are they right for each other? Is that even possible?

Sidebar to Vera's inner voice: we all have it. We all have that nagging feeling at the back of our brain saying we can't. I hated her inner voice and wanted to hug her and tell her she's amazing. If you have one of those (pot, meet kettle, I know), I hope you know you're amazing too.

"I'm here to show you how the other half lives, if you'll let me. The messy, loud, imperfect half."
The beauty of these love lessons is that they set out to help Vera rediscover herself, but Ian needed his own kind of lesson as well. And while the journey was fun, the destination was even better. If you're anything like me, you'll have a smile on your face, a real one, at the end of this book.

Gah!! I swear I don't think I have loved a Sports Romance series like how I just adore Sarina Bowen's Brooklyn Bruisers series. Each book is filled with amazing banter, comraderie, bromances and sisterhood. Love Lessons had exactly that and more. The fact that this story also had a lessons-in-seduction trope - made it extra DELICIOUS!!! Vera and Ian were sexy, addicting and just plain-old-fun!! I loved their banter and how hilarious some of the scenes were!

Ummmm.... Ian Crikey and his love lessons are my new fave, ladies! He was just so rough around the edges, rugged and sexy. Likewise, Vera was sassy and spirited and yet so vulnerable in her insecurities. I adored her honesty and how real she seemed. This was such a swoony opposites attract story!

Overall, I enjoyed their spitfire banter, fiery attraction and how they realized they had more in common than they originally thought. Vera completely changed the game for Ian. He was not expecting her and I loved seeing this burly man fall to his knees! As I've said before, reading the Brooklyn Bruisers series is like being reunited with old friends and falling in love with new ones. I seriously can't wait for more from this author (and this series!) in the future. 5 stars! ~Ratula ❤️

Oh heavens. Y'all - this is a shout from the rooftops kind of book! Loaded with banter and chemistry and heartfelt emotion, Love Lessons just knocked my freaking socks off.

And I am all the way in love with Ian Crikey.

Holy moly - I didn't see this guy coming. And I can't even put my finger on what I loved so much. Some thoughts:

Rough around the edges bad boy vibe? ✔️
Laid back, devil-may-care attitude? ✔️
Playful, teasing humor? ✔️
Sexy as sin, but somehow also sweet as syrup? ✔️

Yeah. All those things.

I kept thinking about how, for a sexy book, it was spending a lot of time being awfully adorable and in doing so - it completely won me over. I loved the connection between Vera and Ian. I loved how their opposites attracted in a way that didn't make sense, but their hearts connected in a way that totally did. And I loved, nay, I adored the underlying fairytale of it all.

With Love Lessons, Sarina Bowen delivered all of my favorite things about romance. It was smart and snappy, but also littered with these romantic scenes that sometimes took my breath away. It was funny and adorable, but smoldering with heat in every exchange. It was perfectly balanced and I had so much fun reading it!

As always, the bromance was almost as emotionally rewarding as the romance. I love these men and there were some decidedly heart-tugging moments occurring within the team itself. It added depth and emotion and rounded out the perfect package that was this addition to the Brooklyn Bruisers.

Honest to Pete this series is the gift that keeps on giving and I will throw myself at every single new release as long as Sarina Bowen keeps writing them. An enthusiastic five stars from me. READ THIS! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

Sarina Bowen gives us another fun and fabulous hockey romance with Love Lessons. She always writes sports romance so well and I enjoyed Vera and Ian’s story a lot.

Ian and Vera’s story starts out with a little bit of an enemies to lovers vibe at the start, but they become friendly with each other pretty quickly. Vera is a stylist and friends with some of the hockey crowd and Ian is a player for the Bruisers. They find themselves in a group in Italy as the only two single folks.

I loved the banter and back and forth between these two. The ‘love lessons’ between them (Vera desperately needed to get some confidence back in that area) were fantastic and these two had a ton of chemistry. I honestly just had a blast listening to this one.

I listened to the audiobook and as always Joe Arden killed it voicing Ian. Rose Dioro I’m a little less familiar with but she did a great job as well. I can’t recommend the audiobook enough. This was a great story and a quick listen. Can be read as a stand-alone.

Vera + Ian

Ian's last hockey season wasn't his best. Plus he was just arrested for throwing a too-wild party in his house. The team is not amused! He needs to clean up his act. His person. His hair and clothes.
Enter Vera. His new neighbor and a professional stylist. Also friend to his teammates and their wives. That's why she's not only about to give him a make-over - she'll also be going on the trip to Italy with all their friends.
And she might be interested in some private lessons in exchange for her stylist services...

LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN! 😂

Another super adorable + funny + sexy + vacation-y hockey love story!
As you might know I'm not a hockey fan ... but I love Sarina's books and this was not very hockeyish so I loved it even more! 😁

I just adored Ian and Vera. They are so not a match made in heaven, but they're also so perfect for each other!
I loved the banter and the Italy moments and the shopping and the other players and the girls...
We also have a few serious moments.
I loved it all.

Still asking myself why Netflix hasn't knocked on Sarina's door yet??
Does it already have an amazingly funny and sexy Hockey Romance series? NO, it does not!

LOVE LESSONS was the most adorable + funny + sparky + vacationy + sweet + fashiony + not-very-Hockeyy-Hockey Romance! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Ian - this one is MINE!

4.5 So, So, Bowen Fun Stars
* * * * 1/2 Spoiler Free
This had me from the start as I wanted to be entertained, have fun, have some characters who will eventually get insight into who they are, have sexy times, and allow me to not worry about anything for a while.

Mission Accomplished.

What I love about Sarina Bowen's writing is how she has a plan, we know the plan, and yet...we all can buy into the plan and enjoy it from the first moment to the end.
There isn't any pretending. We know we are going to have two people who may have started off on not the best of terms...and then they will have to interact in some way. Each provides something the other one needs...A win-win for all.

The arc of these interactions, though, causes so much more than anticipated by the people involved. There is always personal growth, some "eye-opening realizations" causing a questioning of assumptions that had been made about the other person.

And oh, the romance...
The way these two embark on "Love Lessons" Is The Best. Fun, Hot, and Sexy.

Of course, there may have been a hiccup or two, a need to have a bit of insecurity but in the end...we get what we want plus way more.

This may seem simple to accomplish...but in execution, not so much. It takes knowing how to make the characters real to the reader, where you feel as if you would be able to "know" them if you run into them on the street. It takes understanding their insecurities, being able to have compassion for mistakes they may have made, or want them to confront their demons and come out the other end victorious. Bowen does that for me every single time.

This for me was Winner-Winner, Chicken Dinner!

Vera and Ian don’t really like each other. Or do they? She thinks he’s an unkempt slob who makes too much noise, he thinks she’s uptight. They’re both secretly attracted to each other, but neither has any intention of doing anything about it. We’ve briefly met both Vera and Ian in previous books in the Brooklyn Bruisers series, and neither left a lasting impression on me, so I wasn’t THAT excited about this book. Except that it’s Sarina Bowen, and she rarely, as in …never… disappoints me. Enemies to lovers? No thanks, it’s one of my least favorite tropes, but it’s Sarina, so of course I’m going to read it. Well, it’s my new favorite in this series! I love, love, love Vera and Ian! These two have so much chemistry! And are just so much fun! I cannot say enough about how much I enjoyed watching the personal development and growth of these two characters as well as their developing feelings for each other. Their relationship arc is sexy, funny, at times a little heartbreaking, but always entertaining. Vera is now one of my favorite heroines, and Ian vaulted to the #1 position in my SB Hero lineup. Considering how swoon worthy her Heroes tend to be, that’s saying quite a lot.

Initially, Vera does seem really uptight, but as the story unfolds. we learn about her rather rough childhood and how that impacted her confidence, leading her to believe she isn’t good enough. In fact, she has an inner voice that criticizes and reminds her constantly. Add an as*hole ex-boyfriend to the mix and her self-esteem and confidence are in short supply. While her plan to get her ex back didn’t really work for me, I guess I can understand why she thought she had something to prove. Ian is struggling after an incident at the end of the hockey season. He feels guilt over an injury to an opposing player, and he is having a difficult time dealing with it and moving forward. Fortunately for him, and us, his friend and team captain, Patrick O’Doul keeps showing up for support, encouragement, and to let him know he isn’t alone. Anytime Doulie is on the page, I’m a very happy reader. Ian and Vera end up on an amazing vacation to Italy with several of his teammates and their SOs. I was worried they would spend most of the vacation bickering, but instead Ian agrees to help her get her ex back by giving her lessons in the art of seduction. Their vacation fling is so much fun, they both relax and let down their guards. The unguarded moments when they’re honest and vulnerable with each other melted my heart. Both Ian and Vera are very funny, I laughed a lot at their banter. The character development is excellent—they both learn so much about themselves and each other, the changes and growth are subtle, but they work and feel organic and authentic. But what happens when they get back to Brooklyn and real life? My lips are sealed, you will have to read it for yourself. I’m off to plan my vacation to Lake Como for next year.

When Sarina Bowen breathe I'm in awe, I adore her stories and characters, but this time she put into this book a little of my country so I'm even more enchanted.

Ian Crickey is a hockey player for Brooklyn Bruisers but at the moment he has some problems with the management due to his poor public image, fortunately he has planned an italian vacation with some of his teammates to relax and recharge. Little he knows that his beautiful but unnerving new neighbour Vera was invited to the italian villa too.

Ian and Vera have a rocky relationship, they have different personalities and interests, they argue a lot about almost anything but the physical attraction between them is undeniable and strong.
I liked both the main characters because their differencies and banters make the reading entertaining and enjoyable, the cocky but sweet hero and the feisty and passionate heroine conquered me and made me their number one fan. The Love Lessons were really hot and spicy, they made me wish to not be single.

I seriously recommend giving this book a try, you won't be disappointed.

I haven’t felt this much magical happiness while reading a story in a while! I loved both Vera and Ian from the minute they hit the page, as individuals and as a couple. The development of their relationship was organic and full of so much fun! Even when they were bantering/bickering, they were just fun! Love Lessons’ premise isn’t something new, we’ve read variations of it a million times, but Sarina’s style of writing put a unique spin to it that felt fresh, and I adored every second I was in this world!

The one tine circumstance in the entire story I wish had either been spun in a not so predictable way or just completely skipped over was the whole reveal behind Ian’s arrest. I don’t want to say it was an unnecessary conflict, but maybe LOL The story already had a conflict written into it with Vera’s past boyfriend so … UGH, I just dislike drama for drama’s sake and that’s what that boiled down to but rainbow, even as I type this negative tidbit about Love Lessons not a single ounce of magic & joy is sucked out of my listening and reading experience! YES, I listened to the audio version and read an ARC as well because I’m extra and I loved this journey so much! Rose Dioro & Joe Arden made a perfect couple for this narration! They were in sync with each other and made the narration flawlessly natural and a glorious experience! I would highly recommend either the ebook or the audio or both!

I liked this a lot more than I have some of the more recent entries in this series, but it didn't quite hit the highs that it has for me elsewhere. What I did love, though, was the awkward sex and use of lube. Did I love that you have a heroine who has never been able to orgasm with someone else in the room and after one tutoring session where the hero tells her to take orgasms off the table and then suddenly she can? No. But I liked that at least it was different.

I enjoyed this while I read it, but I also don't see myself ever going back to it like I have some books by Bowen. I finished this over a week and a half ago and I don't really remember anything specific that I wanted to say about it.

It’s lust over love for this couple, but that makes for a fast-paced, sexy read. While I think there were a few missed opportunities (especially in enhancing the emotional connection), I enjoyed this overall and had no trouble bingeing it in one sitting. The hero is a sweetheart of a guy who gives off bad boy vibes, and he makes the perfect complement to the put-together, image-focused heroine. The opposites attract dynamic worked, and it was easy to see the attraction sizzle between these two. But, in keeping things casual, they avoided developing an emotional connection - and I think they were too successful at that. I kept seeing potential moments of intimacy, and they were almost always overlooked or tossed to the side. These two seriously needed to have a conversation, lol. So, despite my frustration at how easily they kept their fling free of feelings, I could see all of the ways these two were right for each other.

The story follows Ian, a pro hockey player who is having a particularly rough year. An incident on the ice has left him questioning his future, and the only bright light is the Italian vacation he has planned with some friends. When Ian discovers that his sexy, uptight neighbor will be joining the group in Italy, Ian isn't sure what to think. He wouldn't mind ruffling Vera's feathers - or hitting the sheets with her - but she hasn't been returning his advances. Vera thinks Ian is sexy and a little infuriating, but it isn't until her ex re-enters her life that she actually considers crossing that line. Vera's relationship ended in part because she was too buttoned-up, and Ian might just be the perfect guy to teach her some lessons in seduction. While Vera isn't sure whether she wants her ex back or to show him what he's been missing, she does know that Ian would make an ideal vacation fling in the meantime. They're way too different to develop anything meaningful, and that's good because Vera might already have another guy in mind.

I'm not always a big fan of "love lesson" storylines, but I've been enjoying the series, so I decided to dive in anyways. And I'm glad that I did! Surprisingly, it didn't bug me (much) that Vera was working on her bedroom moves for another man. It was easy to see how great she and Ian were together, and how they had the potential to be exactly what the other needed if only they would open up. Which, yeah, I wish they had opened up more, but the book flies by so quickly that I barely noticed the absence for awhile. I loved Ian; he's the kind of guy that looks like he's just up for a good time, but he's really a loyal, lovable man underneath it all. And Vera might've seemed uptight, but that was hiding her awkwardness and inexperience. Sure, parts of the story were underdeveloped or a little too "typical," but I liked their connection. Plus, the book doesn't have a dull moment, and it was over before I knew it. It's not a standout read for me, but it does make a solid addition to the series - and certainly a sexy one.

Audio note: The audio was excellent! I've been loving this series on audio, and the experience is undeniably enhanced by the performances. You can't go wrong with Joe Arden, and I also liked the female narrator, so it was an easy, laidback listen. It's dual narration, with a runtime that's short enough to finish in one day without trouble. The low angst vibes work well for a workday listen, though there's enough steam that you'll be in for a few uncomfortable moments at the office. The steam isn't a huge part of the book, but there's a decent amount. I turned this on at the start of my workday, and it was over before I clocked out - which was absolutely ideal. It flew by, and so did the workday. So that's a definite win! I received an early copy, and am voluntarily leaving a review of this sexy sports romance.

3 stars.

So I love the idea of sex lessons. Physical intimacy before emotional intimacy is one of my faves, and this kind of tutoring is a great way to get there.

But, most of the time, I am frustrated with these stories by the end, and Love Lessons was no different. Although on some subconscious level Vera was falling for Ian the whole time, she was still consciously trying to pursue her ex up until 75-80%. That’s just too late for me.

I did like that she was the one to do the grand gesture.

I dunno. Even before the frustration at the end, this wasn’t wholly working for me. Some awkwardness at the sentence level.

They bickered a lot at the beginning, but then it felt like that dynamic was dropped for 100+ pages before it came back with “we’re bickering we do that all the time remember”

A bit jam packed of old characters. I get that the vacation villa needs filled out, but it was just a lot of different names thrown at me. (And I’ve read the whole series but one! I just don’t remember them lol.)

This isn’t a bad book, by a long shot. There’s nothing unforgivably bad about it. It’s just pretty meh.

Contains: hockey hero, enforcer hero, dyslexic hero, hero with PTSD/depression, therapy, off-season, vacation fling, personal stylist heroine, neighbors, bicker to bang, Italy, sex lessons, trying to get back with hero ex, unashamedly feminine, gala, ex’s wedding, large friend group

CW: grandmother death to cancer (past); description of hero causing a career-ending injury

3.5 steam.

Does hockey get any better than this?
The Brooklyn Bruisers are one of my favorite teams and I can't stop with this world Sarina Bowen has built.

You met her in Shenanigans. She made me long for the days when I could have a billionaire float in and sweep me off my feet--and then hand me my very own (okay, she's Neil Drake's too) stylist.

Vera. Yep. That powerhouse is here and she's ready to take on a whole new endeavor... makeover the 'bad boy' of the Bruisers.

The banter and quick wit between Crikey and Vera is fanstastically done. You'll want row seat so you can watch these two go back and forth.

I absolutely loved this book! Ian and Vera are so freaking cute together. I absolutely adore these Brooklyn Bruisers books, they’re cute, funny, spicy and there’s always a lesson to be learned. Sarina simply always brings all the feels. I’m terribly bad at describing books since I usually just talk about how I felt. Ian is labeled as the bad boy of the Bruisers, and he is sent by the team to clean up his image or else. Vera is a stylist (she’s Charli’s friend from Shenanigans) and what people perceive as a good girl. Ian and Vera are neighbors and also have friends in common, so they’re invited to Italy on the same trip, they bond over being the only single ones while slowly learning about each other and falling for each other. I loved the anticipation and how their relationship developed. I loved that they cared for each other without noticing and how they fought their feelings when they were clearly so in love with each other. Their banter and chemistry were awesome. Joe Arden and Rose Diorio narrate the audiobook and they were just perfect as Ian and Vera! Absolutely recommend this book (and whole series) you will not be disappointed!

This was fantastic! I have been a huge fan of Sarina Bowen’s writing since I first picked up her work about 4 years ago. One book and I was hooked. I have read quite a few of her books since then and she hasn’t let me down yet. I went into this book with pretty high expectations and they were all met. Vera and Ian were great characters and this romance had all of the swoony moments that I had hoped for.

Ian and Vera are neighbors and they don’t seem to get along with each other all that well. They are both a part of a group of friends taking a trip to Italy and they happen to be the only two people on the trip that are single. Ian plays hockey on the Brooklyn Bruisers team and is needing to work on his image. Vera is a fashion consultant. On the surface, these two have nothing in common but once they started getting to know each other I thought that their personalities fit together perfectly.

I loved Ian and Vera together. Even when Vera wasn’t completely comfortable with a situation, she always knew that she could trust Ian. Ian wanted Vera to be happy and didn’t want to get in the way of her plans. The chemistry between them was incredibly well done. These two had no problems in the bedroom once Vera gained some confidence. It was so much fun to see them grow together.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. This book is part of the Brooklyn series but reads perfectly fine as a stand-alone. Ian and Vera were such a great couple and I had a great time seeing them learn how to be together. Those last few scenes in the book were spectacular. I cannot wait to read more of this very talented author’s work.

I received a digital review copy of this book from the author/publicist.

Initial Thoughts
I loved this! Ian and Vera were perfect together and I was eager to see them work things out. They had fantastic chemistry and I thought their personalities complemented each other perfectly. The fact that the bulk of the book takes place during a trip to Italy with much of the team that I have met in previous books was a welcome bonus.

4.5

I'm not tearing up/holding back from crying as I finish this book, NO I AM NOT. I was talking to a friend when I was getting towards the last chunk of the book and she said this book felt like an end of an era with a certain Captain retiring. I have to agree. I have been closely following along with Bowen's work now for about four years and I know for a fact I have mentioned in multiple other reviews how much these characters feel like family to me. If this does in fact wind up being the last Bruisers book (no idea if this is the case or not), I will be satisfied.

When we first got a flash of Vera and Ian bickering in Charli and Neil's book, I had been hoping for more of them together. My wish was certainly granted. What I did not expect was to read their story with the GORGEOUS backdrop of a villa in Italy. Perks of having a mega rich friend/teammate like Neil I suppose, lol. Gahh, what a luxurious setting. The thought of them connecting in this super beautiful and restful place for a few weeks during the summer was just very...nice. They didn't have to worry about the pressures of a busy job or an insanely crazy hockey season, they were just able to get to know one another a little better and bicker all they wanted.

In all seriousness though, the main trope of this book being ~teach me how to be sexy and how to seduce men~ IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES OF ALL TIME. I've read about it numerous times and loved it numerous times but I felt like this one was special because of Ian. Most of the time in those situations the guy is a HUGE playboy. I'm sure Ian did get around since he is an insanely hot and talented hockey player but playboy wasn't ever the vibe I got from him. Instead he was open and playful in bed which coaxed Vera into trusting him quickly and brought out her own brave side. I absolutely loved it.

Besides that we do get into deeper issues too--Ian dealing with the aftermath of dealing a career ending blow to a kid last season and being told my management he needed to clean up his image. Vera of course was trying to figure out what to do in order to impress her ex at a gala he invited her to after the Italy trip and was also guilty for being the one to call in Ian's noisy party that ended up getting him temporarily arrested. As expected though, by spending time together like they did, both of them were able to think about their problems through a different lens and take care of business for themselves accordingly.

Overall this book warmed my heart and I was obsessed with the steam level. It doesn't matter what Bowen writes, I will read and I WILL love. That's all there is to it. Do yourself a favor and start reading this series if you haven't already. It's 100% my favorite hockey romance series of all time.

Huge thanks to Tuxbury Publishing LLC for allowing me to read an eARC in exchange for my honest opinion!♥

This is out now! I listened to the audio Joe Arden & Rose Dioro
This can be a complete standalone, but with supporting characters from previous Brooklyn Bruisers
books.
Ian is a bad boy of hockey who needs to clean up his image-and his lifestyle.
Vera is very sweet, but nobody's fool.
The setting in Italy is gorgeous. Ian and Vera go on a trip with his teammates and her friends. Forced proximity = YES !
The banter is so good. Ian and Vera spend time really getting to know each other.
I love their chemistry.
I will definitely reread/listen to this again
Great HEA.

This doesn't read as if it's written by the same Sarina Bowen who wrote the earliest books of the series, or who wrote the most recent book of hers that I've liked (Waylaid). I read about 25% and gave up.

I found the hero unattractive and a lout, with his insistence on calling the heroine "Countess" and hitting on her constantly, even when she had said several times she wasn't interested (because "he can tell" she is).

Now I regret all my life choices.

“All of ’em?” Ian asks, so I must have said that out loud. “Mile-high club offer is still open in case you have a few last wishes. Be a shame to die without experiencing all that life has to offer—like the ride of a lifetime on the Crikey express.”
Ugh. (That also includes another pet peeve of mine: the heroine -it's always the heroine- who thinks something and accidentally says it out loud -who does that??).

The heroine was a ninny. The plot involves an ex (who dumped her pretty horribly) who comes back and is interested, and she is considering getting him back. Why? As far as I could tell from the bits I read, because he's rich and suave. From what other reviews say, she's still pursuing him till very late in the book, and it's what sets up the 'love lessons' in the title, because she thinks she's bad in bed, from what the asshole ex has told her. Idiot.

And yes, the whole love lessons thing is yet another pet peeve of mine. It's so common in romance novels that I think we're just supposed to go with it as a classic trope, but I freaking hate it.

I also disliked in this book the adulatory attitude towards extreme wealth (and this is something I've been noticing in previous books in the series). Oh, how wonderful, Neil is taking them all in a private jet to Italy (who cares about unnecessary carbon emissions, right?). They don't even have to go through customs. Vera is even taken through passport control while out of her mind on tranquilisers she took because of her fear of flying (they describe it as a weekend at Bernie's situation). No one even remarks on the fact that this is dangerous and would allow rich people to traffic women quite easily. No, let's not spoil the fantasy.

There’s nothing that Sarina Bowen will write that I won’t read. Multiple times. She’s my favorite author by far, and the Brooklyn Bruisers series is one of my favorite series ever. It’s definitely my favorite hockey series without a doubt.

Love Lessons is a complete standalone lessons-in-seduction, frenemies to lovers, opposites attract, summer vacation fling hockey romance that is set in both Brooklyn and Italy. And it is glorious! The banter and chemistry between Ian and Vera is off the charts! It’s steamy, it’s sweet, and it’s fun! I loved the dynamic between them, how different they were and how much they actually fit together. Watching them figure that out was definitely a lot of fun. I couldn’t put the book down!

I love Sarina Bowen’s writing in general, the simple beauty of it and how her stories flow. She definitely excels at it. The hockey is always on point even for those of us who know nothing about it. She makes reading fun and gives you the right amount of angst to keep things interesting and emotional. She is a master at making you feel all the feels.

There’s nothing quite like a Sarina Bowen hockey romance, and in Love Lessons you get to hang out with other couples of this series, so it’s extra special. If you haven’t read any of the other books in the series you can certainly read this book first, but as a hardcore fan I suggest you also read the other books. They’re all outstanding and addictive. I highly recommend this book and all her other ones.

4.5 stars!

The latest in the Brooklyn Bruisers series, this book is a lot of fun. A no-strings, lessons-in-seduction sports romance with an irresistible hero, a relatable heroine and a stunning Italian backdrop, this book was the perfect reading escape, and I loved it!

Ian Crikey is a veteran of the Brooklyn Bruisers NHL team, but just recently, his image has started to come into question. A recent arrest, coupled with his sloppy appearance, and the team is on his back to fix himself up. Rumors of a supposed transfer within the team also has him freaking out, and he knows he needs to shape up quickly.

Vera has appeared as a side character in previous books. She’s a fashion-loving stylist who is friends with other members of the team and just happens to live next door to Crikey, and when she hears about his issues, she knows she can help. Crikey is not on board – firstly because he doesn’t care about things like clothes and general grooming, and secondly, because it’s Vera, and working together will lead to problems.

She doesn’t see the problem – that she’ll be measuring my inseam for a suit, and I’ll be thinking dirty thoughts about tying her up with her tape measure and whipping out my dick.

Crikey had me laughing so many times. He’s a complete straight shooter who says whatever is on his mind, and he’s so freaking funny.

“Wait … You won’t make me look like a fashion slut, right? I mean, the slut part would be fine. I’m just not sure about the fashion.”

When the two of them end up as the lone single people on a trip to Italy with four other couples (all from the series), their attraction sizzles and Crikey – true to form – makes his desires known.

“So tell me … What are you going to do first in Italy? And keep in mind that I’m still an option.”

It’s a fun set-up, and when the bliss of a summer holiday, the beautiful Italian setting, and too much wine lead to Vera confessing her lacklustre sex life and lack of confidence with all things sexual, she propositions Crikey for lessons in sex and how to seduce a man. Not one to turn down an offer like that from a woman he can’t stop thinking about, and with her insistence on their arrangement coming to an end when their holiday does, he whole-heartedly throws himself into the task. Let the fun begin.

What was I thinking? I can’t believe I asked him for seduction lessons. Only a loser would do that.
Oh wait, that’s me. A confident girl would just… wink at him or something and invite him over later. But me? I give a living demonstration of my awkwardness and then beg him for help.

I love the teach-me-about-sex trope in a romcom. It’s so much fun, and I reveled in all of the chemistry and sexual tension. Even when you know where it’s going, the sense of anticipation is fantastic, and I was fully on board and so excited as Crikey and Vera dive on in. It’s fun, light-hearted and so freaking sexy. They are completely open and honest with each other, making the whole experience playful yet intense, and the dynamic between them is so much fun to watch.

The bathroom door opens after a polite tap. He peers into the room, spots me in the bath, and smiles. “Nice work, contessa. It’s a simple setup, but classic.”
“Right?” I agree. “I’m all, ‘Oh, I’m just here taking a bath, don’t mind me’.”

Against the beautiful backdrop of northern Italy, their simple arrangement starts to become deeper than either of them anticipated. Watching their friends all loved-up around them, wanting that same connection with somebody, and all of that passion, intimacy and sweetness, the lines soon blur, and it’s beautiful to watch them fall for each other.

I’m not used to so much raw connection – all that eye contact and deep, deep kisses.
I’m supposed to be the teacher here – the one who knows what he’s doing. But when she whispers my name, I’m lost.
And I don’t even think I care.

But their arrangement was only meant to last the summer. And with Crikey’s career up in the air, they have some uncertainty to overcome. But Bowen totally delivers on their story, without angst and drama, just a little bit of soul-searching, and I loved watching them figure it all out and find their happy ending.

This is a great addition to the series. Like the other books, it can completely standalone, but the cameos will be a real treat for fans of the previous books, and I loved being back in this world.

So much fun with lots of heart, I loved this one!

4.5 stars!

Books, Coffee & Passion

After a few unfortunate events, Ian needs to clean up his image, and the Brooklyn Bruisers' management team is pressuring him to do that. His neighbor, Vera, is a professional stylist, and they're total opposites but there's a simmering attraction between them. Vera wants more clients so she's willing to help Ian with his image problems. Both of them go on a summer vacation with Ian's teammates and Vera's friends, and they make a deal: Vera helps to style Ian, and Ian helps Vera with the art of seduction. It sounds a little unconventional... it's hilarious!

First of all, Ian was not at all what I expected. I was expecting a partying, womanizer bad boy, but he was nothing like that. He was the sweetest! Even his lack of taste in clothes had a motive behind it. His background and history made sense and made him so relatable. I really enjoyed how his life story influenced who he was and how his character evolved. He was so laid back, relaxed, sweet, and flirty! He was wonderful with Vera! The way he flirted with her and helped her with her journey in seduction... It was so charming.

Vera was also a great heroine! She was funny, sweet, caring, and hard-working. Even though she had a few unresolved things with her ex, hence the seduction lessons, it didn't bother me much. I think it made her relatable and helped me understand why she had certain insecurities. I loved how she didn't let Ian stop her from buying him new clothes to style him. She was fierce! These two were definitely opposites, but the chemistry between them... off the charts! Their banter, their steamy scenes... I loved it!

Although both of them judged each other by their appearances, in the beginning, I enjoyed how they realized, after spending some time together, that they were very wrong in their assumptions. The seduction lessons were super fun and hot! Their emotional connection was very perceptible after that, and their relationship felt inevitable, natural, and sweet. The cast of characters was great too and the setting made it even better. I enjoyed the summer vacation setting a lot, sadly that meant we didn't get much hockey on this one. I still loved it though. I'm a huge fan of Sarina Bowen's writing and lovable characters.

Love Lessons was a sweet, funny, entertaining read, with a great cast of characters, steamy moments, exceptional banter, and chemistry. I loved it so much!

Ian is a hockey player who’s got flirting down to a science. He doesn’t care about his image, looks, etc. Despite being a tough hockey player he’s easy going and extremely likable and very lickable ;)
He has an image issue with some recent bad looking behavior and needs help with his image to appease his hockey team.
Vera is focused on her new fashion stylist business. She seems a bit prissy and uptight. She’s very career driven and single minded. I began to really like her as her layers got revealed.
The two are new neighbors and they clash immediately, yet they both are aware of their strong attraction despite being opposites.
The banter and humor is fabulous.
The flirting and the wordplay is amazing.

They have mutual friends and end up on a summer getaway to Italy.
The story takes place in Lake Como mostly and it sets a beautiful backdrop to this sexy romance where Ian is her sexual tutor and Vera is his image makeover specialist.
The chemistry, the flirting, the banter and emotions are all so entertaining.
The sex is absolutely FIRE 🔥 I loved the teacher/student playfulness.
They are incredibly fun and sexy together.
Both characters have emotional issues that become apparent and it makes them that much easier to love and it adds plenty of heart and feelings to a strongly sexual story.
The secondary characters add plenty of fun to the story. I loved the dynamic between them all.
When their vacation and arrangement is over, what will the fallout be after connecting?
I loved this couple and story. It’s very fun entertainment with lots of heat and emotions.

This one is definitely different. First, we just don't get a ton of Ian in the books leading up to his, even though he's been a member of the team for years. Second, the setting is outside the norm for this group, and although I enjoyed that, it just felt disconnected with the rest of the series. Beyond that, I still really enjoyed it, but not as much as the last handful. I felt like this ended on a really good note for closing out the series (whether this is the end or not). I feel like this series could go on and on, but I'm ready for something fresh and new and I CAN'T WAIT to dive into The New Guy!
