Three children entered the woods; just two returned. And they are the only ones who know what happened to their friend. The secret they carry echoes down the years until it becomes too much for one of them to bear. But the attempt to set things right goes horribly wrong.
Exactly how wrong is what Leah Nash, a journalist with trust issues and a compulsion to find the truth, aims to discover. Leah is rocked by the seemingly senseless present-day murder of someone very close to her. Driven by her principles and fueled by personal grief, she follows a strange trail of clues that lead her to a dark past.
Susan Hunter is a happy introvert who lives with her husband Gary, an extreme extrovert, in rural Michigan.
She spent some years as a reporter and then as the managing editor of a small daily newspaper. From there Susan went on to work at a university in publications and marketing where she honed her skills at appearing engaged in academic meetings, while internally composing her grocery list. She also taught a few classes as well—in English composition, that is, not in faking your way through meetings.
In addition to writing the Leah Nash series, Susan enjoys reading other people’s writing, watching classic films, occasional walks and snarky conversation with old friends and family, eating chocolate chip cookies, and answering emails from her readers. Visit her website, susanhunterauthor.com
This is a well written series. The storylines are always interesting, well thought out and well crafted. A 40 year old missing child case collides with a modern day murder in this 10th installment in the series. The murder investigation is personal for Leah because the victim was her business partner and friend. I really enjoyed the dual investigations. The only problem I have with the series is Leah herself. She often is negative - seeing the glass half empty and often unwilling to hear constructive feedback. She also doesn’t seem to want her relationship with Coop to progress. Why be in a relationship if it’s never supposed to change! These types of issues make her come across as self centered and rather whiny rather than the smart, caring, independent woman she’s described as by the people around her. I’d like to see her mature more. All in all, this is a very good series and even with the issues I have with our heroine, I do really like the series.
This is another good mystery and suspense from Hunter. I really like Leah as a heroine. I have read several of Hunter's novels featuring her and have seen her grow into her super investigative role. She finds information by talking to people, a somewhat informal technique. She and Detective Charlie Ross have often butted heads because of her activities, frequently getting facts the police miss. It was interesting to see Charlie's character mature in this novel to being almost gentle.
I liked that Hunter included a bit of irony with respect to characters. Leah, after successfully writing true crime books is trying her hand at fiction. The agent's critique centers on Leah's character not being emotionally engaging. The irony comes from Hunter's ability to make Leah as a character very emotionally engaging.
I like learning when I read fiction. Leah is part owner of a small town newspaper. Small town newspapers are difficult to keep profitable and it was interesting to read about an unusual way of keeping this one alive.
Hunter's writing style is a pleasure to read. I like her descriptions. She describes one person as with a cramped little soul, for example. The plot is good, relating current events to one forty years ago. And there is a suspenseful twist at the end. This is a good addition to the mystery novels featuring amateur sleuth Leah Nash. I'll be looking for the next one.
I received a complimentary egalley of this book through the author. My comments are an independent and honest review.
Another complex mystery for newspaper owner and novelist Leah Nash. Leah often works with local law enforcement. She has helped them in the past and does so again when a prominent local man is murdered. Prior to this, one of the long-time residents had committed suicide, blaming his misfortune on the man who was recently murdered. His family requests that Leah assist in the investigation and she agrees as people are often more willing to confide in her. As she works along with the detective, there are several possible suspects; disgruntled members of his own family, the family of the suicide victim, and those who saw him as a threat to the community due to his sexual preference. When work on one of the local areas unearths the remains of a missing boy, the police must delve into the cold case and question residents who lived in the town at the time he went missing. Leah is famous for seeing and learning what others may have missed, but will what she notices get her killed? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. Dangerous Choices, the tenth book in the Leah Nash series is by far the best of the series. Maybe because by now I know Leah, Coop, Miguel, and Ross as old friends and I’m allowed to tag along on their adventures/cases. While each of the previous stories included a crime to be solved and twists along the way, Dangerous Choices involves a cold case, a murder, and plenty of deception between all the main suspects. Oh, and as for twists, this story has twists, plenty of twists that leave you wondering what is coming next. If you have read the previous installments in this series, Dangerous Choices is a must read and should not be missed. If you are reading this review and you have never read any of the Leah Nash stories or are woefully behind reading the series, what are you waiting for, grab the first book or the next one from where you left off and get busy. I received an Advance Reader Copy of Dangerous Choices from the publisher and chose to provide this review.
Dangerous Choices is the 10 book in the Leah Nash series. I enjoy the characters interactions with each other throughout the story. The characters are nicely developed, and there's lots of surprises woven into this one.
The story starts out with three preteens going into the woods where one of them doesn't return after a prank goes wrong.
Forty years later Leah's partner in the newspaper is murdered, causing Leah to investigate, Surprisingly with the approval and cooperation of Detective Ross.
Miller's daughter had just came up with a plan to make the 'Times' profitable again, and now Leah doesn't know if the plans will continue or not.
We learn a lot about the background of Miller and his personal struggles growing up as a wealthy kid who's dad doesn't approve of most of his children for one reason or another.
I would like to thank Severn River Publishing and Susan Hunter for the opportunity to read this story as and ARC. All expressed opinions are my own.
Back in Himmel, Wisconsin with newspaper proprietor, author and part time murder sleuth, Leah Nash. From a beginning of relative calm Leah’s world is turned upside down by the latest murder to hit Himmel. The story excellently makes you think you know who the murderer is and then takes you down a completely different path.
This series is a joy to read, the small town community of Himmel sounds idyllic, or at least it would be if it didn’t keep attracting murders! The characters are all really relatable and the developing bond between them is an added bonus.
I would also like to thank Susan Hunter for choosing me as a winner of a competition on her writer’s Facebook page and giving me a cameo walk on - or should that be wheel-on part in the story.
I found the beginning a bit slower than usual. The first portion of the book was like catching up with old friends but nothing really happening. I prefer my books to be a bit more fast-paced than that.
The action did pick up though, and there were enough hints for me to have an inkling of whodunnit with a few red herrings thrown in.
I think this will please Leah Nash fans and look forward to the next instalment.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Leah Nash is back with another nail biter. The characters are believable and relatable. The twists and turns made for exciting reading. The suspense kept me glued to my seat wondering what would happen next. I like Leah's way of interacting with the characters and getting them to open up to her, which makes her a great journalist. I would definitely recommend the Leah Nash series. I received an advance copy of the book via Severn River Publishing and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
This fabulous mystery is beautifully crafted and hard to put down. The well drawn characters come alive on the page and the plot twists keep you guessing. Highly recommended! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
Wow this might be my favorite Leah Nash story. It's the 10th in the series but they just keep getting better. I can't get enough of Leah, Coop and Miguel. Love Leah's spunk and humor. Great mystery. Didn't see this one coming. You want a great mystery look no further. Cold case, murder, suspense and twists. This book had it all. I highly recommend reading this series.
A farmer whose land is not accepted as commercial farming, a stabbing of well know gay resident of the town, body of child that has been missing for many a years, secrets kept, family …. It keeps you hopping from page to page. Love the characters, and enjoyed seeing Leah and Ross somewhat working together
Dangerous Choices is an entertaining read that explores the actions of an investigative reporter when faced with the murder of her best friend. The possible culprits are extensively examined but the responsible for the murder surprises the reader. Fast-paced and well-written. I thank Ms. Nash and her publisher for a copy of this book.
I’ve read them all, and loved them all! I’ll admit this one had me tearing up more than most! I feel like at this point I know all the characters! Such a good job getting the reader to connect! I won’t give anything away here, but if you have read the others, I think you’ll tear up as much as I did!
Think this one is my first 5 star rating for the series. Truly enthralling. Lot of character development. And, sadly the loss of a growing main character in the series. Good twists and misleads. Didn't figure it out until just before all was revealed. Oh my, and, at this time only one book left in the series (for now).
As with the previous nine books, great crime thriller where a current murder is intertwined with an accident/murder that had happened 40 years back and had ended up as a cold case. Leah Nash manages to solve the cases by bumping into the smallest of clues— ash. The identity of the perpetrator of the crimes is very surprising and unexpected.
What a suspenseful story. Leah is a journalist who is trying to find information about a long ago mystery. Is it connected to a recent murder. Fast paced, well written with characters that will keep you guessing about what could happen next.
A murder that has shaken Leah and to realize the connection is in the past. Even worse she is now the center of interest for the killer. An excellent series, with a captivating plot to the end. Given ARC. by. SRP for my voluntary review.
Leah Nash doesn’t disappoint when solving another crime; this time the murder of a close friend. All the usual suspects abound as well as some new ones.
Another exciting Leah Nash adventure with lots of twists and turns. I just love this character. She is sensitive, witty and above all tenacious. Its a another great Leah Nash mystery by Susan Hunter and I can't wait for her next adventure.
I continue to hope that Leah Nash will learn to curb her impulses. She is supposedly maturing in her thinking but she continues to make thoughtless remarks that put her in danger.
