Mysteries of an Earl's Daughter

Rate this book
Lady Clementine Musgrave had no intention of getting roped into her cousins’ investigative society. But that doesn’t mean she can let the mystery of the sighting of a dead man go unsolved. The fact that the man just happens to be the uncle of her greatest enemy, the loathsome (and unfairly handsome) man who helped get her family cut from society, only makes the intrigue more delicious…

The Marquis of Rochdale doesn’t have time for ghost stories. Roman’s focus needs to remain on protecting his title and arranging an advantageous marriage, not on helping Clementine solve a supposed mystery. They’re complete opposites, she hates him, and she’s entirely unsuitable. But for some reason, that all slips his mind when she’s in his arms…
He can’t afford a scandal. Her life is nothing but scandalous. Can Clementine and Roman find a way to overcome their differences and carve out a path to happily ever after? Possibly. But first, they’ll have to figure out why a dead man is wandering the streets of Bath…

Opposites attract in this steamy enemies to lovers Regency story. If you loved the Duke's daughters, you'll adore their cousins, the scandalous Musgraves!

This is the sixth book in this entertaining series, the Musgrave sisters are a delight, all are very different & I can’t wait for all their stories. I loved this enemies to lovers story, Roman & Clem were both in denial about their feelings but couldn't keep apart. I loved their road to a HEA & also the mystery of the 'ghost'. The pages flew by & once started I read it straight through finishing in the early hours
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

It’s true that opposites do attract. I love it when 2 characters are so blatantly attracted to each other yet fight it. The marquis, Roman, is determined to stay away from Clementine and her scandals. It’s a must read because Clem and Roman’s chemistry sparked on the page.

Family scandals always annoy me because so very little had happened in the past (as in Lady Clementine Musgrave’s family) that would be considered a scandal only because someone gossips about it!

I will soon be reading the first 5 books of this series, The Duchess’s Investigative Society. This one was a fast-paced, easy read. I hope the next book is about Sir Marmaduke the solicitor.

I received an advance copy of this book for my honest opinion.

When there isn't anyone else to step into the breach, Lady Clementine is sent to Bath to assist an elderly lady who swears that there have been sightings of her late husband. At odds with the Musgrave family in general, the Marquis of Rochdale is horrified to discover Clem in his aunt's home and determined to put the theory of a ghost to rest. Clem despises Roman every bit as much as he dislikes her, but it cannot be denied that opposites attract. As it becomes evident that his aunt does have a case, Roman has no choice but to join forces with Clem to discover the truth about the mysterious appearances of his late uncle. There is some suspense in this novel and a mystery to be solved, but mostly it is about the awkward mating dance between Roman and Clem as they try to avoid one another, but discover an attraction that goes beyond anything they have ever experienced. The story is romantic although I did find some of the passages of dialogue a little long-winded. Nevertheless, the novel comes to a good conclusion as Roman finally comes to his senses. I received a copy of this book as a gift through BookSprout and this is my honest and voluntary review.

I’m really overjoyed that Samantha Holt decided to continue this series with female amateur detectives, because all these books have been great reads so far. And this is no exception! I really loved this enemies to lovers tale, with two interesting and somewhat quirky characters and their equally intriguing families. The “scandalous Musgraves” are funny and endearing, a veritable breath of fresh air among the stuffy aristocrats of the Ton, and I can’t wait to read more books with this eccentric family. Holt’s writing is always very much enjoyable, with witty banters between the characters and laughing out loud moments. Really worth reading!

This is a spin off from The Duchess Investigation series. Lady Clementine Musgrave is a cousin to the women of the Duchess Investigation team. Clem has no plans to become involved in any of their cases. But when she is asked to help a family friend, Lady Mary she can't say no. Even if her nephew is the dreaded Marquis of Rochdale, Roman. He is the reason the Musgraves were told to leave London by the prince. Clem will never forgive him for what he did to her brother.
Lady Mary is a nice older widow who loves dogs lots of them Unfortunately Clem is allergic to them and cannot touch them every. This is the only thing she has in common with Roman.
The last thing Roman wants is to have the Musgrave's around his Aunt. He doesn't believe her about seeing a ghost of her late husband and doesn't want Clem putting ideas into her head.
When Clem and Roman lock horns over him wanting her to leave and her determined to help Lady Mary they are both surprised to find an attraction to the other !! While trying to find out who is breaking into the Mary's house ghost or real person, they are drawn together a lot. The underlying emotions and feeling between these two is delightful to watch as both deny their.
Will they overcome their past misunderstandings, share some secrets neither knows of the other or will they wait too long for a happy ever after. Grab a copy and help solve the mystery and see what happens to our couple with the help of friends and family. This is such a wonderful read I know I will be re-reading in again... I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.

Loved it! I was so excited to see another book in this series….thank goodness for cousins! Clementine (Clem) received a letter from her cousin Chastity, asking her to assist a family friend named Mary, who needed some help. Mary, an older woman whose stepchildren were causing her financial hardship by contesting her late husband’s will, had an intruder issue. She also had a nephew, Roman, who avoided impropriety at all costs. Since Clem’s family name was synonymous with scandal, he was most distressed to find her involved with his aunt. And so, we are teed up for a story ripe with conflict, discord and a mystery to solve. Clem is such an interesting character. She is energetic, clever, loyal, compassionate, and always needing something new to occupy her time. Roman, on the other hand, strives for a very proper life, and once his aunt’s issue is solved, he plans to continue on that path. This is a lovely tale in which two people move outside their comfort zones and find exactly what they need, not necessarily what they thought wanted. You will find wonderful characters, humor, danger, and steam in this story, as well as a few unexpected surprises. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down!.

I really enjoyed the mystery in this entertaining and romantic book, and the Musgrave sisters are all so different but will bring interesting additional stories to The Duchess's Investigative Society. Their family was ruined and forced out of London 5 years ago after some scandal - the handsome man behind it was Lady Mary's nephew and there were bad feelings the Musgrave's felt for him; but Clementine (Clem) Musgrave can't say no when a mystery sighting by Lady Mary of her dead husband appears in her bedroom one night. No one believes her story, especially her nephew who needs to get to London to find a bride - Clem believes her and agrees to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Roman Avery, Marquis of Rochdale, and Lady Mary's nephew is an arrogant, serious man that avoids scandal always. Now he has been tossed into the middle of a ridiculous ghost story that has him working closely with one of the scandalous Musgraves and they still blame him for their brother's behavior years ago and he was there but not part of it. As they are forced to spend more time together, Roman begins to believe his aunt and he also can't seem to keep his hands off Clem and she believes his claims of not being responsible for her brother's scandal and is falling in love with Roman.

Solving the mystery, discovering love, accepting personal happiness and not what other people think is the most important thing. Roman and Clem are opposites that are perfect together, Aunt Mary, Duke and the sisters were wonderful secondary characters - I am hoping for a Duke and Violet adventure! I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

ENEMIES TO LOVERS
4 1/2*STARS*
Lady Clementine Musgrave is investigating Lady Mary's claim her husband, who was lost at sea years ago, was in her bedroom. Lady Mary's nephew, Roman Avery, Marquis of Rochdale, doesn't believe it's his uncle. He doesn't even believe there was an intruder. Clem is determined to prove him wrong and find out what the intruder is looking for. Clem and Roman distrust each other, but there is a very shocking attraction between them. Opposites in society, Roman is careful of his reputation. Clem's family's reputation is a little rocky. Prinny did run them out of London to live in Bath. Roman's rigid life is coming undone when he and Clem can't stop touching and kissing. Butting heads, they work to to solve the mystery. This couple was made to be together.

This is my 27th book by Samantha Holt and I’ve been reading her since 2016.

I am really enjoying this series. Like with any series I read, sometimes I forget things that happened in previous books of the series because by the time the next one comes out, it could be months later and I’ve read a lot of books in that timeframe. In this case, I’ve read 114 books since book 5 came out in April. So needless to say, I was a bit rusty on prior storylines.

But it didn't deter from my reading pleasure. 😊
I loved Clem and Roman. Such a great story and a super cute couple to read.

A superbly interesting and funny story. Clem is wonderful and feisty. Roman is stoic and loyal. They are opposites in every way yet they are drawn to each other. Clem is related to the family of the Duchess investigators and is on a case to solve a mystery. It has personable characters and witty conversations. Clem and Roman engage in banter that is sure to make the reader laugh out loud. In the end resistance is futile and love is the happy result.

Quickie review: 3.5-3.75 stars. This was a pretty good book. While it had a good story, it was a little too long and too slow burn. Still, I ended up enjoying it. I liked the characters and it is well-written, if a little lacking in chemistry. I will continue this series.

I’m always delighted when I find main characters who have neurodivergent traits. Even though I am an adult now, I still find it very pleasant to see something of my own being represented in a book. The story was pretty good too.

I received a copy of this from BookSprout and this is my freely given opinion.

I have to admit that I have not read any of the other books in this series so far, but the blurb of this one caught my eye and so I decided to give it a go. I am sure there were characters mentioned that likely appeared in previous stories, but this felt like it stood by itself just fine and I was not missing anything for not having read the others.

Lady Clementine Musgrave is a member of the scandalous Musgrave family. They have pretty much been run out of London because of a variety of scandals attached to their family, including being accused of stealing the Regent's dog (it was found in their carriage - probably a spoiled, poorly behaved/poorly managed canine, after all look at the purported owner), and a brother who climbed naked onto a statue in public, when drunk and egged on by his peers. It does not help that they are relatively new to their title, and despite being wealthy, are still treated with spite and snobbishness by other members of Society, even in Bath.

Clem is a smart, spritely lady, and sent by her cousins to help Lady Mary, a widow living on her own, who claims to have been visited by the ghost of her husband, who was lost at sea. She is forced into straitened circumstances by her terrible stepchildren who are contesting the will. As such, the sweet lonely widow is living in a quite poor and neglected fashion in her home with minimal servants, and her six dogs (!!! I love Lady Mary !!!)

In the meantime, Roman, the Marquis of Rochdale visits Lady Mary, his only aunt whom he does love, to help her sort out the issue as well, and try to work out the hold up to her estate by the cousins. Otherwise he would be forced to move Mary and her dogs into his own home. A huge inconvenience for him, despite his love for her, as he is allergic to the (!! SIX !!) dogs, and he has all but settled arranging his marriage to the highly respectable and appropriate Miss Fisher, through her father.

Unfortunately Clem and Roman rub each other too much the wrong way. They clash over the investigation with Roman thinking his aunt is dreaming or having delusions, and Clem finding evidence that someone has been coming into the house. They find out that there is a letter that connects with a past scandal in Roman's family's past. One that his family worked for generations to keep hidden as it lead to the loss of their titles and lands several generations back, and took many years to gain them back, and one that Roman was taught by his family to hide no matter what, and to avoid scandal no matter what, to avoid his ancestors mistakes. These strange visitations may be related to someone looking for that ancient letter, perhaps to try to blackmail or some other purpose.

Roman and Clem then start to work together to solve the the mystery and find the letter. As I said, they rubbed each other the wrong way... and what happens when you have enough friction? Heat, and sparks of course - if you do it right :)

Holt writes with a light hearted humour and verve that I have quite enjoyed in this and other stories, so there were many moments that caught me smiling, chuckling, and quite enjoying myself, Clem is sweet and vivacious and I enjoyed her perspective and her relationships with her female relatives, and how they still hold themselves up with dignity despite the attempts of other snobbish members of society trying to step on them and bring them down. Roman was a bit of a prig with a stick up his rear, and he needs a spirited woman like Clem to help him pull it out.

... and let's not forget !!! SIX !!! dogs!!!!

4 stars out of 5 (rounded up because of !!! DOGS !!!

Despite their rank, the Musgraves haven’t returned to London for the Season in five years ever since a series of disasters from their younger brother getting drunk, naked and climbing a statue of King Alfred, (it wasn’t really his fault, he was eighteen and couldn’t handle his drink!) to their father vomiting on Lady Sutherland’s shoes (he’d eaten bad fish), and finally stealing the prince regent’s dog. (He climbed into their carriage and hid!)

Cousins to the original Duchess’s Investigative Society girls, they find themselves drawn into investigations, eventually discovering that society doesn’t hate them as much as they thought. But do they even want a life in amongst people who don’t appreciate them?

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Will this affair’s result stand between them …

I missed the previous book as it did not fit in my reading schedule, but it is also waiting on my shelves for when I will find room for it.
So I do not know or remember this set of sisters and wonder if they were introduced in the last story.
This was a fun enemies to lovers tale, Clementine and Roman have a shared history, well she blames him for her brother’s misstep and he sees her lot as embarrassment upon disgrace or scandal in the making.
So they can not possibly match when he is working in restoring his family’s name and the Musgraves simply await their next uproar.
It was a fun read with a bit of a mystery to solve, the banter between these two was entertaining as their relatives. But Clementine’s inabilities to stay focused long enough on a subject or his difficulties to read and write stand between them, each believing the worst about themselves.

I am now curious about the other siblings and Roman’s friend Duke, quite a tender heart behind his rakish smile.

I love a great detective story. Throw in romance, and I am hooked. Mysteries of an Earl’s Daughter by Samantha Holt kept me pinned to the pages.

Lord Rochdale, aka Roman Avery, isn’t happy when he finds out his elderly aunt, Lady Mary, elicits Clementine Musgrave’s help to uncover the mystery surrounding her dead husband. His family worked hard to repair their reputation. However, Roman needs to keep it pristine. He and the Musgraves have a turbulent history. Besides, the Musgraves are scandalous.

Clementine blames Roman for encouraging her brother to drink. His actions aid in her family getting tossed out of London. So, needless to say, Clementine and Roman dislike each other. Yet, they are physically attracted to one another.

Lady Mary tells Clementine about a disgraceful love affair between Thomas and the Princess that stripped the Avery family from their assets. It happened hundreds of years ago, but Thomas wrote her a letter that still exists—the puzzle piece to who really entered Lady Mary’s bedchamber.

Lord Rochdale wants the letter found and destroyed. He’s afraid it will dredge up old history.

As in all good romance mysteries, Roman and Clementine solve the case and fall head over heels in love.

The characters and settings are extremely well developed. The scenes are equally nicely crafted. The romantic scenes are tastefully written. Three out of five on the spice meter. I’m hoping Ms. Holt writes a story about Duke. I loved his character! Five stars.

Such a delightful story! The h is on the fringe of Society because of outlandish behavior of their family. Nothing truly scandalous, but the Ton frowned on them and cut them down. The h is a wonderful character who doesn't let people get her down. She can't sit still and is always wanting to learn new things. She's kind, caring and speaks from the heart.

The H is trying to restore the reputation of this family from what happened several generations ago. He is more of a stick in the mud but will do anything for his aunt. I loved how the h brought out a more relaxed feeling in the H.

This story has some mystery and suspense in it. A ghost could be at play but you will not be sure for awhile. A nasty villain made the story interesting. I enjoyed how the H/h slowly go from hating each other to more. It was a journey I was glad to experience.

Interesting not only main but secondary character's. Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level 5 out of 5 and filled with love and passion and described only once.

The banter between the H/h was spot on and lightened the story. A few swear words and one Lord's name used. I never truly understood why the h and her sister's couldn't pick up dogs - unless I missed it, it's a mystery - lol.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romantic and steam. Even though book 6 of the series, it is a stand alone story. I can't improve on the blurb but giving you some tidbits to decide to purchase this story. (ljb)

The Duchess’s Investigative Society continues, in Bath. Lady Clementine Musgrave has been asked by her cousins, the Daventry sisters, to aid a family friend. Lady Mary is convinced that she saw her deceased husband in her room. Clem is doubtful, but agrees to help. Mary’s nephew, Roman, Marquis of Rochdale, believes the sighting was a dream. He wants nothing to do with Clem or her scandalous family (even though they blame him for one of the scandals), and he doesn’t want her involved with his aunt. The problem is he can’t seem to stay away from the annoying young woman. Roman and Clem are definitely opposites and they definitely feel an (unwelcomed) attraction. This is a fantastic addition to the series. The Musgrave sisters, like their cousins, are quite different from each other, but close and loving. Roman is a bit stuffy. The one thing he has in common with Clem is that both are allergic to dogs. This is a fast-paced story with a mystery to solve and an amusing trip to a happily ever after. I enjoyed it and look forward to further adventures.

Clementine and Roman

Clem has something new to do. From her cousins in London who need her help to help Lady Mary. It seems Lady Mary has seen her dead husband twice, and no one will listen to her! When Clem goes to talk with Mary, she's uncertain she can help her. After all, her husband was lost at sea a long time ago. Before she tells her she's uncertain about helping her, Mary's nephew Roman arrives and begins to tell Clem that her services will not be needed! Well, Roman doesn't realize that now she's determined to help! Then there's the little matter of a letter that Mary's dead husband may have been after. Why would he want an old letter that brought Roman's family shame and the loss of titles, lands, and everything else hundreds of years ago? There is only one way to find out, find the letter! Only with Clem and Roman working close together, things start to happen! What kind of things? Why did Roman decide that this endeavor was worth checking out? What happens should the letter be found? Who is breaking into Mary's home? Why? Only one way to find out, read this great story by Samantha Holt!

Lady Clementine Musgrave with her family are living in Bath after a scandal made them leave London several years ago. She has been asked by her cousin to help in an investigation to help Lady Mary. She believes she has seen her long dead husband in her room.

Roman Avery is a marquess and the aunt of Lady Mary. He does not like the Musgrove family and wants nothing to do with Lady Clementine. He feels his focus must remain on protecting the family’s reputation.

Lady Clementine refuses to leave the investigation and because Roman loves his aunt he also wants to make sure his aunt is safe. He does not believe in ghosts and thinks his aunt has been dreaming or something.

As the book description says “Can Clementine and Roman find a way to overcome their differences and carve out a path to happily ever after?”

I enjoyed reading this book.
Although it is part of a series it can be easily read and enjoyed as a stand alone story.

Who could ever want to associate with those scandalous and horrible Musgraves? Cousins to the original founders of the Duchess Investigative Society, this book is about Clementine Musgrave, an unconventional girl who cannot seem to find one thing to hold her attention for too long. Roman, Marquis of Rochdale is straightlaced and sticks to the rules, so when he finds that there's a Musgrave helping solve a mystery for his Aunt Mary, sparks fly.

This was a solidly written story, with some mystery, some romance, and lots of witty banter. I really enjoyed the blossoming relationship between Clem and Roman as they learn more about each and find out that maybe the rumors surrounding their families have been false. The mystery of the letter kept you invested in the story up to the end and I liked how the author didn't just end it with the two of them getting closer but rather made them work through some differences and learn to compromise. I look forwards to the next story.

Exactly what you need

Clementine aka Clem has been asked to assist Mary who thinks she's seen her dead husband!? Mary is old and very sweet but perfectly lucid! Clem insists on helping her and believing her even if its to thwart her handsome, rigid nephew Roman who is a Marquis!
Clem is a Musgrave intent on breaking rules and Roman on preserving his ancestry. When love of a woman had his ancestors lands and titles taken they have only been restored in the last few centuries!
He has the perfect bride picked out and no matter how much he wants to kiss Clem senseless he is honorable in all things!? When the intruder gets more bold and clues are found then these two are thrown together more than ever!
When one of the guards are injured and Clem sprains her ankle well these two grow even closer! But is Roman willing to give up his pristine reputation for a Musgrave???
Clem is easily bored can she settle for Marriage? When danger visits with a lunatic and a fire will Clem and Roman finally admit to what matters most?

A Delightful Mystery . . .

Lady Clementine Musgrave is asked to go to Bath to investigate an elderly lady’s claim that she has seen her deceased husband! The Marquis of Rochdale is not at all pleased to find Clem at his aunt's home looking for a ghost! In fact, he is arranging for an advantageous marriage for himself and wants to avoid even the hint of a scandal. Clem and Roman do not like each other because he is so proper while she is a bit of a scandal-magnet. But when it seems his aunt may be correct, Roman joins Clem into looking further into this matter of the ghostly apparition.

While trying to figure out the mystery, Roman and Clem make every effort to avoid each another, yet their attraction becomes very obvious. She is enthusiastic and intelligent. Will they find out what is going on with Roman’s uncle? Will Clem win Roman over? Could she be someone he could spend his life with? Because being around Clem would never be dull!

Utterly charming! The enemies to lovers trope has always been my favourite. This story gave me all the delicious angsty tingles right from the start. The animosity between Clementine and Roman from the very beginning made their passion obvious. There is a fine line between love & hate and often it is defined by a lack of knowledge. Once these two let down their defences and got to truly see one another, it was inevitable. I loved watching them work together to solve the mystery of the letter, growing their bond. Each of the side characters in this tale were equally delightful, from meddling aunts, to loyal sisters and devoted friends. I cannot wait to dive into the next Musgrave story, and hopefully see Duke find his happiness too. 😉
Though taking us away from the Duchess’s Investigative Society that we know and love, I am happy to see that this new branch in the family’s Society is as closely bonded as the last. It proves to be a delightful new chapter.

Clem wants to help his aunt Mary figure out who has been entering her house. Roman wants scandalous Clem and her family to go away and not give into his aunt’s fantasies. But when she finds proof several times over that someone is searching his aunt’s house for what they believe is a letter that could ruin his family, he has no choice but to work with her. I was surprised Roman would decide on a lady to marry without even meeting her just because he believed she met his proper well bred requirements. Clem is interested in many things and doesn’t want to marry, but there’s plenty of kissing and other steamy encounters with Roman. They hurt each other and should have seen especially when her life was on the line what was really important.

Roman Avery is trying to get his aunt what she rightly deserves. Then he is off to London to secure his future wife who is above board in all things. Clementine Musgrave is here to help her cousin's aunt by marriage, nothing more. They flip each other's worlds upside down. I really enjoyed this book it was hard to put down. The mystery surrounding the aunt was mysterious. :) but alas as everything does it worked out in a splendid way with everything and everyone getting what they need and for the most part deserved. Roman and Clem get what their Aunts hoped they would. Delightful!! I recieved a free copy so that I can tell you what I honestly think. Hope you enjoyed my review. Now go enjoy the book

This is book 6 of The Duchess's Investigative Society though it is a standalone.

This book is about Clem, Lady Clementine Musgrave and Roman Avery, Marquis of Rochdale.

Clem is a free spirit who always seems to be doing the wrong thing. Roman is uptight and trying to be the perfect Marquis, trying to restore his families name. Two opposites!

Clem is asked to help Roman's aunt solve a mystery...the mystery of her dead husband's ghost...???
Clem is helping the Duchess's Investigative society with this, Roman wants no outside help nor anyone snooping in to his family's past.

I love Clem, what a spunk. Her family is great too, definitely not a typical ton family.

Great continuation of this series.

Lady Clementine Musgrave, of the famous Musgraves come to help Lady Mary when the older woman thinks she has seen her long dead husband in her bedroom one night. This sets her off on the search for a romantic letter written over three hundred year before by an ancestor that cause the family to be band from London and forfeit the title and lands as he loved a princess promised to another.

The current Marquis of Roman Rochdale wants to protect his Aunt Mary and find the letter to destroy it to keep further scandal from his family name. The search starts, the intruder returns, Clem finds a deed to a cotage in the woods owned by the late husband, a fire in the stables, lots of romantic interactions from the carefree Clem and the very proper Roman to an unexpected ending. Loved it.

I think the Musgrave ladies are going to make some quite interesting stories. Clementine's book was entertaining, intriguing, and romantic. I am glad there is more investigations by The Duchess's Investigative Society. Roman avoids scandal at all cost, but fate lands him with one of the scandalous Musgraves girls. Together they try to solve a mystery for his aunt and in doing so realize they are perfect for each other. It's a interesting story with great characters. I look forward to reading Violet's book and hoping Duke is in there as well.

I did like the main characters of Lady Clementine and Roman, Marquis of Rochdale. They had completely different characters, Clem was always changing hobbies and had developed a good number of diverse skills. She wasn’t one to stick to the rules. Roman, was more of a stickler for rules it but he did care for his aunt. They meet due to Clem helping his aunt with a mystery. Clem and Roman were attracted to each other but didn’t want to be. I must admit I did work out the mystery quite early on but it didn’t stop my enjoyment of this story. Clem had an interesting number of sisters and I hope Violet and Duke have their story. This was an entertaining enemy to lovers story. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
