Cammie is a healthy little girl who lives with her mother, father, little sister Prissy and her grandmother. She especially loves her grandma because she makes her feel safe and loved. Cammie thinks there is something wrong with her because she hates her mother and yet loves her too. She feels lonely and scared many times. Her daddy works nights and she doesn’t feel safe with her mother. Prissy gets to share a room with Grandma but Cammie has to sleep by herself. After Daddy goes to work, Mom gives hot chocolate to everyone at bedtime. Cammie feels tired and notices that her mother locks Grandma’s bedroom door after she and Prissy retire for the night. When she asks her mother why; she is threatened to keep her mouth shut. When Cammie feels threatened or scared she zones out and doesn’t remember what happened. She tells Grandma that sometimes she sees a different little girl in the mirror but when she senses Grandma’s concern she doesn’t talk about it anymore. Cammie doesn’t realize that she has an amazing gift for survival . What skills does a child use to survive the unspeakable? When Daddy has an accident and has to stay home to recuperate, things take an unusual turn. He becomes involved in his little girls’ lives and realizes that his wife isn’t the person he thought she was.
I have seen documentaries and movies about people with multiple personalities. Some are impressive because they even change physically (postures, way of walking for example) from one personality to another.
This book presents a case of how the abuse of a mother and despite the love of everyone else, turns Cammie into someone with multiple personalities. There is a second volume (which I do not plan to read, since I do not know anyone in that situation) on how to cure this syndrome.
These cases are interesting and surprising how traumas kill some people and turn others into someone much stronger.
