Spark of Chaos #1

Spark of Chaos

Rate this book
Born into slavery, bound by Fate, and forbidden to love. One faerie will do anything to be free.

It’s not easy being a child of chaos. Disaster follows Isiilde wherever she goes, but that’s the least of her problems—she’s a faerie trapped in a realm of humans. And worse yet, she’s a nymph.

Destined to be sold when she comes of age, Isiilde breaks into the vault of a powerful immortal to steal coin for her escape. But, instead of finding treasure, she (accidentally) releases a fiend into the realm.

As penance for her crime, the immortal tasks her with capturing the fiend. Only events quickly spiral out of control amid political scheming, power-hungry madmen, and three kingdoms bidding for her ownership.

One lone nymph stands at the center of destruction, with her heart bound to a man as mysterious as her strange affinity with fire. Isiilde is far more than she seems. And so is the man who wins her heart.

Fate doesn’t stand a chance against a chaotic fire nymph.

A character-driven high fantasy novel with coming-of-age themes, pyromaniac faerie, and friends-to-lovers tropes.

Previously published as A Thread in the Tangle. A story of innocence and brutality, of love and loss, and courage and hope. It contains mature subject matter. For a list of content warnings visit author's website.

Riveting

It's been a long time since a story grabbed my attention so strongly that everything else faded into the background. The last time was the Wheel of Time series, which I read deep into the night. I've been so riveted that I've forgotten to eat! Looking forward with anticipation to the next book in her series.

I have read this book in many stages and I loved every one! I read this before Fae became a popular read in the YA world. This story follows a Nymph who is faced with a life of obstacles. But when she comes of age it invokes an entitlement that had me enraged. I love when an author can provoke all the emotions. 😊

This book is everything to me.

When I first read this book on Wattpad it was called ‘A Thread in The Tangle’ I was so young, just a little kid then I grew up. I had always remembered this book and kept thinking back about it. Then I searched desperately 10 years later to read this amazing book again and here I am. I was so happy to find and read this again that I could die of happiness.

No words can descibe how much I love this book. The plot, the characters, the twist- everything is just so amazing. I love everything and every single thing I laid my eyes upon this book.

This book and series holds a very dear place in my heart. And will always be. I want to thank this book- especially the author creating this perfection of a book, for introducing me to start reading and enter the world of reading. My love and passion for reading had started with this book.

Thank you so much.

I read this series when it was called A Thread in the Tangle. I was curious going in how much had changed and was quite surprised by the different choices made! In a good way.

I felt like Marsais a bit. Already knowing the path but new trails that I had no knowledge of appeared.

So excited to continue with the next two. It's been a joy to return to this world.

I could NOT put this book down. Lots of story line that keeps you on your toes and little to no romance

It's a hard NO from me!

I wanted to like this book because the premise was interesting. Unfortunately, it was incredibly slow paced. Nothing of substance actually happens until about the 80% mark. The world building also felt a little weak to me. The world and it's politics weren't clearly explained so none of the politics throughout the book made much sense. The names of characters and places were unnecessarily difficult to pronounce and the main characters were flat with no real development. I don't recommend this book and I definitely won't be reading the others in the series.

I wanted to love this book; I really did.
But nothing really happens until the last 20% of the book.
The fact that a barely come of age Nymph ends up bonded with an immortal is also super cringey to me.
It does have some interesting points in the last bit, and finally some great action, but I just can't excuse the weirdly huge age-gap. Can't do it.

Clearly seen, I finished this book in 3 days. I may not have slept all that much. But it is what it is. If you like fantasy, you shouldn’t go past Spark of Chaos.

DNF at 24%

I almost DNF at 10%, but I saw another review that said it got better at the 20% mark. It didn't get better for me.

This book suffers from common fantasy book problems, the most prominent being that nothing happened plot-wise in the 24% that I read. It was filled with worldbuilding, history lessons, and backstory. So much information is repeated exposition and info-dumping dialog. The prologue was unnecessary, and so much of the worldbuilding info that we get in the prologue is then repeated AGAIN in the first several chapters, mostly being how nymphs are looked down upon, less than humans, and bullied. The names are hard to pronounce, and if there's a guide at the back then I didn't look at it because I was reading the ebook version. There is so much banter that doesn't go anywhere. There is so much that isn't explained or touched on, like why is she going to school, where are the other nymphs, and why does she repeatedly think that humans are confusing or weird if she has literally been raised by humans and doesn't know how else to live?

At 24%, we are almost a quarter through the story, and I expect to be close to the end of Act !, and yet it didn't feel as if the story had even started. The MC is way too immature for me, and the way the prejudice/racism theme was slathered on didn't draw me in.

It felt, and don't hate me when I say this, but it felt like fanfiction. Slow pacing, banter-heavy as if I'm supposed to already know the characters and the world and how the magic works.

A unique world created with exceptional writing. The complexity and depth of the characters took me by surprise. I was enamoured by the story from the start and cannot wait to read Flame of Ruin!
