NEW TEAM REVEALED! At last year’s gala, mutants changed the face of the solar system, terraforming Mars and claiming it for mutantkind. Do you think you can afford to miss this year’s gala, all contained in this one over-sized issue!?
If we're going to have a Hellfire gala each year, that means the sliding timescale of the Marvel universe is about to take even more of a beating. There is no way we can keep track of each year we have this stupid party, while also maintaining the polite fiction that the Fantastic Four were always founded 15 years ago.
Also, while it might be trivial to some people, I am baffled by the sheer number of typos in this issue. There were several occasions where words were just missing one or two letters. Just something small and stupid like that, making me wonder who exactly is in charge of editing comics.
Anyway.
I. Hate. The. Stupid. Costume. Nonsense.
Even if you're really into fashion, you should be offended that Marvel is trying to convince you that the Hellfire gala is about fashion. We're not observing expert stitching. There are no interesting fabric choices. It's just a fucking picture. Many of these costumes couldn't possibly work in real life, considering how they sometimes have elements that float above the wearer. Or sometimes it's just something as simple as the fact Magik's face is covered with some ill-defined fabric that might not be fabric.
I like that this issue gave a little more depth to the Cyclops and Jean marriage. For the last couple years writers have been implying that the mutants of Krakoa are just in a constant polyamorous fuck-fest. Weirdly, this issue contradicted that theory when Cyclops said that Jon Hamm is one of Jean's hall passes. ... If Jean has a hall pass, that means that she and Scott have a presumption of monogamy. The whole point of a hall pass is that it is an exception to monogamy. ... That is then confusing as fuck, because there have been some recent issues of X-Force that try to suggest Jean and Logan might somehow be a couple.
I do not care for the polyamorous fuck-fest. Partly, I'm invested in Scott and Jean as a OTP. But I also just think the polyamorous fuck-fest is lazy writing. It's a way for the writers to try to make everybody happy by not clearly defining any particular relationship.
Once again, I like the majority of members of this "elected" X-Men team. But I did not care at all for the previous X-Men book. It was superficial and joyless. The characters never really had time for deeper characterization, and characters like Sunfire hardly ever got a line of dialogue or substantial role in the plot. If this team is tied down by 12 issues, that isn't much time to cultivate a lot of depth.
The Summers family is well represented in this team. But I'm baffled about why Scott is now supposed to be upset about the idea of being on a team with his brother. With both Magik and Forge on the same team, that now means the X-Men's most experienced mages are concentrated in one place. Does that mean this team is going to handle more magical threats? Firestar has joined the team before, but even that time around, it was clear the writers hadn't read her backstory. She has a graduate degree in art history, but last time around the X-Men had her teach a physics class. (?) So, we'll see if this time around the writers will be more considerate of her.
I like almost all the characters in this X-Men team. I just would have preferred if we didn't have to put up with this "Hellfire Gala" bullshit to get to that outcome.
This was a lot more enjoyable than last year’s Hellfire Gala was. The whole story is thankfully collected in this one-shot and not spread out across a million tie in issues like last year.
It is basically a prequel to AXE and does a good job at establishing where the X-Men are all at by the time Judgement Day rolls around.
Just make sure to read this before you start reading AXE, it will help you if you are confused.
I had a vague idea what was going on because I read the Judgement Day freebie, but this also does the work for you and explains a little background.
This is a gathering of some famous faces and some lesser known, but I really enjoyed watching them all interact. I wanted a little more of the party vibes, but this is very caught up in x-men business. Obviously it stands as a prequel to the Judgement Day arc, but I did want a little more fanciness from this 'gala'.
Artwork is pretty decent, and easy to follow. The costumes are fun though not as great as the characters think they are XD And the big, 'NEW TEAM!' reveal was incredibly underwhelming.
Overall, though, a decent foray into X-men comics and a good jumping off point into more.
I like the idea of a more condensed "Hellfire Gala", there was no reason for it to be a whole event the previous year. The main takeaways from last year's gala was the creation of Arakko and the set up for the "Trial of Magneto" arc, and here we follow the aftermath of issue #12 of Duggan's X-Men run where reporter Ben Urich has written a piece on the current mutant practice of immortality. While the world remains in the dark about the powers of the Five, the fact that mutants have cracked the formula for immortality creates ripples worldwide. Clea, the new Sorcerer Supreme, sees this as a potential route to resurrect the recently deceased Stephen Strange. The Avengers, ever the defenders of the status quo, worry about what this will mean for the world. And meanwhile, Moira MacTaggert colludes with Doctor Stasis and infiltrates the Gala in the guise of Mary Jane Watson. Like the previous year's gala, things go awry quickly but what makes this fun is the more condensed nature of it. Things happen quickly, secrets are revealed, and the ensuing shakeup will hopefully cultivate some strong stories down the road. And oh yes, the new X-Men team is revealed. I didn't care much for this because I find the new roster kind of too safe? I know this probably is the highlight for many readers coming into this issue, but it was the most inert part of the whole story. I do like this as a new tradition for the X-Men, especially since roster shakeups can be fun after some time.
A really fun issue. It was fascinating to see so many combinations of characters talking about the big issues that Krakoa creates as a nation of mutants who can be (theoretically) resurrected indefinitely. The costumes were really fun, and I liked finding all of the cameos in the background. I didn't especially like the cameos from real-life celebrities. I think I would have rather seen in-universe celebrities like Dazzler. It broke my immersion a bit to jarringly see real-life actors on the same page as mutants. That's a minor complaint though. This was a really great issue and I'm looking forward to this seemingly yearly event. I hope that they continue to keep it as a single issue rather than a miniseries.
I really enjoyed it. It was a nice (and frivolous) way to put all things Krakoa in context. A lot happened, Duggan really masters these dialogues, making them just so d*mn interesting and fun to read! While I can’t completely get behind Moira being a villain, I really dig all the things going for all of these x-characters. Most of them got their chance to shine and it was so refreshing seeing them so well portrayed, and in resonance with who they are. Some of them felt more authentic here than in their own books! Anyway, I also loved the new X-Men team chosen.
This year's Hellfire Gala mainly serves as a lead-in to AXE: Judgement Day. It does look like we may also see some conflicts with the Fantastic Four and the Avengers as it's starting to get around that Xavier and Magneto are doing some shady shit. I like seeing Emma Frost in the role of white knight trying to keep the X-Men above board. This also surprisingly ties into Zeb Well's Spider-Man as Spidey and MJ have big roles in this that roll over into Amazing Spider-Man.
Not as grand as the last Hellfire Gala but what can top terraforming mars and declaring the capital of our solar system? But there are some great set ups here that lead directly into the fantastic Judgement Day event. I’m pretty happy with the next X-Men team and I’m excited to see what this years Hellfire Gala will be in just a few short months.
The artwork in this book was amazing. The story is intriguing and lays the groundwork for what is to come. The main point of this book is to establish the new X-Men team and to show how Orchis is working against the mutants to do away with all mutants
Really well done. Mystery, intrigue, possible murder. Costumes! It has it all. I was surprised at how good it was. Even Jon Hamm makes an appearance, dances with a few of the ladies. It was good stuff from the Hammster.
the xmen timeline, after briefly following it properly back in 2019, has me like a deer in the headlights again. So as an insane person, i am starting bang in the middle.
