The 2nd edition, published in September 2022, contains significant changes to the story and differs markedly from the earlier version of the book.
As a top law student in London, Cara's main priority is her career. Anything that can get in the way of that, she avoids as though it were a plague – especially romance. Besides, she’s whole all on her own; she doesn’t need a man in order to feel complete.
Then William crosses her path. The dashing lawyer boasts the most merciless tongue Cara has ever come across, whether it’s in debate or in bed. Blunt and sharply clever, William ticks every box, and even adds some of his own – things Cara never knew she desired in a man. Before long, he puts her convictions on trial, and he drives a ferocious prosecution. Cara finds it hard to resist him, but being together could have disastrous consequences. If William wins the trial, she may lose more than just her heart.
Packed with complex characters, steamy scenes, and cheeky dialogue, The Night series is sure to bring you on a journey of laughter, frustration, tears, and deep reflections you won't forget anytime soon.
Content warnings: This series explores themes of love, trust and jealousy in relationships. It includes scenes and flawed characters that some readers may find disturbing and/or upsetting. Additionally, it is largely character-driven, not plot-driven, and contains sexually explicit scenes. It is intended for mature audiences only. Reader discretion is advised.
Skin of the Night is the first book in The Night series, but can be read as a stand-alone. Book two has not been published yet.
There are no words sufficient to describe the beauty of this book. It gives and gives and gives. It gives chemistry, wit, steam, angst, unique and novel opinions and just so much FUN. And the 2nd edition is even better than the 1st which I was absolutely obsessed with. Can't wait for the next one. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants sizzling chemistry between the pair, steamy scenes which are actually long and satisfying and basically fans of the romcom genre. This is the best one out there(having read 1st versions of almost the whole series on wattpad.)
I was already getting a bad feeling about this story. The characters seemed so insufferable. Then I read the line, “However, I’d always had a kink for dark and tall.” What?! Was the author trying to sound edgy or is she just that stupid? Tall, dark and handsome is a century-old cliche. It’s the very opposite of a kink! I would argue that it is an extremely popular preference for many women. KINK! Oh go to hell!
I was hooked from the first chapter - hard to put down. It was my first book I read in less than a month (I usually take a year lol)
The writing really allows your imagination to run wild and captivates every girls desire to have a man woo her as much what was depicted in this book. Reminds me of 50 shades of Grey mixed with the love triangle in Twilight.
Reads more like a wattpad story than anything but came and stayed for the spice! Annoying characters but still made me a giddy for the saucy scenes. Read if you want a little distraction and enjoy it for what it is 🤷🏻♀️
This one gets 2 stars because tiktok mislead me and I fell for it. The plot was basically just the two main characters running in circles for what felt like 800 pages. It was exhausting to say the least
I've been very invested in this story since I first read it in 2019 on wattpad, so no matter what happens and how many times it's edited I'm always gonna give it 5 stars.
I originally read this book on Wattpad and had enjoyed it thoroughly. I eagerly awaited the publication of this second edition, bought it on Kobo, read the first couple of chapters, then had it sitting on my Kobo app for months, incapable of continuing it… I’ve finally finished it because I was after a book that would not consume me, would be able to put down when I got busy with other stuff, and could happily go to sleep at night not panting to finish off whichever current book I was reading. 😣 It took me some time to finish this book, and that’s unusual for me (I polish books off within days of starting them). My honest review of this novel:
First of all, I seriously don’t recall the writing of this story to be so analytical, to the point where it really just distracted from the story. It got you focusing more on the words than the actions.
Second, I could not empathise, sympathise or remotely understand Cara. She felt so robotic, I need the feels when I read a story, and all I felt here was extreme sympathy for Will, and extreme frustration and impatience with Cara. Character development was.so.slow.
Third, this is the first time I did not want an HEA between the main characters because I seriously felt Cara undeserving of Will. Will I continue the series? Doubtful.
I don’t know the author, but I’m sure her profession is either in the business or legal branch, considering her writing.
I am actually sorry for this review and rating (which is a 2.5 rounded up to 3), because I had enjoyed the original version. It just sounds like the author tried too hard with the writing, tried too hard trying to portray the modern, career-driven woman, ending up with a character I found hard to identify with, and extremely disliked many times.
I would prefer is she spelt ‘arsehole’ like ‘asshole’ but I’m guessing it’s English?
Spicy scenes are so focused on saying what’s happening the main character that the setting around them is hard to keep up.
When describing Ellie I don’t know why it was so necessary to say ‘Black lady’ with capital letters? Meaning the main characters are white? I prefer a book (especially one like this where it doesn’t matter) to not specify race so the reader can pick their own - or at least just hint to it (like describing her hair, which the author did after the fact) so that she still felt like she was describing the character she saw, but the readers could still picture their own person. Just her whole first impression of Ellie is stereotypical and kind of weird…
‘A little chubby in her anatomy’???? That’s such a weird way to say that!!! And then she talks about Ellie’s breasts for a third time!! We get it, they’re huge.
‘Maternal squeeze’ barf.
Also, if the author goes through all the trouble to say Elisabeth prefers Ellie, why not stick with that being her name??
Cara says that Will keeps bringing up their night together and that’s why she won’t sign the contract, but it is actually her that it turning it into a way bigger deal than it is! Will sincerely apologised and they she just kept going and going… I already can’t stand this character.
I hate how both characters need to justify in excruciating detail how ‘different’ they are from everybody, it comes across as plain self-righteousness.
Also what’s with the insanely unnecessary explanations of things (like why do I care about Jason and Will’s different friends groups and how they met? And who’s who’s friends???) and then to tell me from both Will’s and Cara’s perspective? Terrible writing.
Why is everyone suddenly best friends with each other? Will’s best friend is Jason, and then it’s Andy. Cara’s best friend is Livy, and then Jason, and then Aaron, where does it end?!?!
‘I could almost hear my ovaries call his name’??? Barf.
Says that her friendship with Jason is 100% platonic but continues to call him sexy and sleep naked with him?
What’s with the random name drop of listerine total care??
Cara says she doesn’t have a jealous bone in her body, but not even that long ago she was basically green with envy from just looking at Francesca and making up shit in her head about her and Will? So sure babe, whatevs.
I feel like the author is trying to be as witty as possibly in her dialogue and she ends up being repetitive and the chemistry of the characters becomes forced. This whole novel is repetitive to say the least, Cara is constantly mentioning that Will is her boss every 10 minutes, and that’s being generous. Would I even call it a novel? It feels like a terribly written watt pad thing.
God and the constant monologue-ing about shit we’ve literally just read about is infuriating, and she monologues through the same thing multiple times!!!
A bit hypocritical for Will to want Cara to get tested and then offer to have one himself? A little controllingggg
Overall: dumb and I wish I hadn’t wasted my time or my money on this book
oh my god — those are the perfect words to explain my reaction. abso-freaking-lutely love this book! the characters, the plot, the presentation, the smut and the intellect behind it all, muaaah 😘🤩 this book is amazing with a capital A. 10/10 recommend it.
though, cara definitely possesses some willpower clearly not capable of myself. because, as stated yesterday, i would’ve fallen in love with will so much sooner. the way he’s described in the book makes it incredibly difficult not to swoon over him. however, the chances of coming across anyone in the real world resembling half of those characters is probably the same as winning the lottery.
overall, from the first page to the last, claire captivated my head and heart by her skilful writing, relatable characters, and distinctive plot.
I find myself wondering why this book isn't more popular because it surely deserves more recognition. I went blindly into it and did not expect much, but I was thoroughly surprised. The plot can get quite frustrating at times, the characters make some questionable decisions, and the main lead isn't very street-smart, in my opinion. Nevertheless, I couldn't put the book down. The author has a very unique style of writing and uses a lot of big words to describe simple things, but after a while, you do get used to it. I especially liked the communication between the two leads towards the end and how maturely they handled their situation. I can only recommend this book.
i really enjoyed this. The story was so simple but i felt captivated the whole time and i just wanted Cara to accept the fact that she wanted William. But good for her for focusing on her career like that. We love an independent woman.
But i’m so glad Cara did not annoy me to death like some female mc do.
However, the scene when Will excused himself from their family dinner to overthink about Cara and if she could possibly be involved with someone else made me think if guys think that way too. Me personally, when i have a crush i dissect every detail and interaction so for some reason i liked seeing a man overthink like that.

I didn’t expect that ending and if I’m being honest.. I feel like there’s something missing. Will made me fall in love with him in Cara’s pov, but his pov where extremely cynical and rational, the way his mind worked was very different from what I expected.. he became a red flag in the end, but I hope he’ll be better for Cara. Cara’s extremely brilliant, she’s so direct and amazing.. she’s just incredible.. ofc she proceeded in the wrong way abt the entire situation but it wasn’t that bad. The book overall was def entertaining, but there was no plot and it became a lil repetitive by the end, I still enjoyed it tho.
I wanted more smut wnjdjdjd LOL but the tension in this book was very enticing thou I absolutely loved how character driven this book was but some of the characters were somewhat insufferable at times 🤡 Also i hated the fact that cara and will kept giving excuses about them being drunk just to defend themselves cause boy oh boy was that super annoying to read about. Moreover I really adored Jason's character and would've loved for his character to shine through a bit more😙 this books was a 3.5 ⭐️s for me 🤧👍🏻
Look I love a good big strong stubborn man but not to this extent. I liked the dynamic of a strong women and a strong man but the persistence Will had even though Cara stated her intentions and feelings to him legit every time they talked and he blatantly ignored anything she told him was a big massive red flag. I enjoyed the writing style of the book but i felt very uncomfortable throughout reading it because it didn’t seem like a love story that should be romanticised. (Also side note; wtf is Caras and Jason’s relationship?!?!?)
Took me a chapter or two to get into since I felt Cara was a tad insufferable at times and some of the dialogue in the beginning was a bit of an eye roll, but once Will and Cara met I was hooked. The chemistry, the sexual tension! It had me on the edge of my seat rooting for these characters. The smut was toe curlingly good, I was trembling, I was out of breath. I osmosis absorbed this book in two sittings. Easy weekend read.
The dialogue made me want to tear my eyes out why the fuck does every character need to be as insufferable as possible. Yes, they're law students but putting every second word into the thesaurus doesn't make the characters sound smart it makes you sound dumb
The MMC had the best kind of like possessive, I need her kind of vibes and I was HERE for it. Besides the FMC being a liar for like a large chunk of this book, I throughly enjoyed this. Also what’s with the whole ‘vaginal wall’ quotes 😂😂
