THE FINAL SHOWDOWN IS NEAR…BUT WHO IS THE REAL ENEMY?

She worked for them, bled for them, and nearly died for them humans in the Conglomerate of Free Citizens. For her entire life, they refused to let her forget that she was the inferior species, but things have changed. With the alliance of the two strongest nations on the continent - which she leads - her former country needs her help. They just don't know how to ask. They demand that she brings her army to assist them.

But Salryc Luxx isn't the same downtrodden slave she used to be. She has risked - and lost - so much to free her people from oppression, and now the Conglomerate expects her to obey like a well-trained dog? It's time they learn that humans aren't the dominant species anymore.

Political games and human prejudice can't stop her from getting the revenge she deserves - or from showing her people that the iliri are no longer pets.

Like all the books in this series, Rise of the Iliri is a complete epic science-fantasy novel, without a cliffhanger. The female lead has multiple consensual romantic relationships as well as fulfilling friendships that matter to the storyline. Because the illiri have insatiable and exotic sexual instincts, the smoking hot sex may make it unsuitable for humans under 18.

probably the 20th re-reading: May 2024
I still love it.
I’m only speed-reading the first 7 books in this series, the best ones, I still don't like the rest.
Maybe I'll even find enough strength in me to finally write a review for the seventh book, who knows. If not, number 7 is better than book 6 in my opinion, so if you're thinking of giving up at this point, try one more book.

original review:
This book is more of a filler than really moving forward with the plot. I understand that it is necessary to introduce something like a break after the last part. And that's ok, not every part has to be packed with action. And I also love the "time" Sal gets.
BUT, really, is it necessary to have the same dialogues over and over again? And yes, I understand that Sal is going around in circles and she is allowed to whine. But it is so annoying to read the same stuff over and over again. Even though I enjoy every minute I can spend in this world, it could be written better.
And some of it is illogical but well, maybe I'm too perfectionistic but I've already given the previous volumes better ratings than they deserve, at some point I'll stop...

The litte thing I love:

"Will I drag you with me? If I lose my mind, will you and Zep be safe from me?"
He cocked his head to the side. "I do na know. I also do na care. If ya go crazy, then I wanna be there with ya."
😍

"Do I kneel?" the woman asked, looking between all of them.
"No!" Jarl insisted. "Being King is just a job, like running a diner. It's not something to kneel to."

So amazing

This series really does continue to get better and better. I couldn't put this book down and now I have to wait for the next one. I'm kind of happy I didn't discover the series until so many books were out because I got to read 6 in a row. Now I'm not sure how I'm going to handle the wait for the next one though.

This one felt like 400 pages of waiting for things to move along. The constant back and forth of the politics (we want your help, we don't need your help)was enough to drive me crazy. It just never went anywhere.

That being said, I've truly enjoyed this series as a whole. I only have a couple of overall insights that have me curious....

I keep wondering about the blurb where it states that this is an RH and the exoctic and insatiable sexual instincts of the Iliri make it too steamy for those under 18 years of age.
I would like to make it clear that neither do I mind it being sexually explicit or less streamy and more action focused. Also, I enjoy the RH genre, but it's certainly not a necessity.
Therefore, I don't mind that it doesn't read as any RH I've read before or that this book not only wasn't sexually explicit, there wasn't any intimacy on page period. For that matter, there's been more than one book without anything explicit. It's either been non-existent or fade to black in several of the books in this series. Though, there are a couple of the books that do contain exotic appetites.
I really enjoy epic high Fantasy novels with a strong, independent heroine and intense action sequences. What I don't understand is the misleading blurb in the first place.
This series can easily sell on it's quality of writing and storyline. It doesn't need to overextend its focus group.

"The ripples of our actions matter just as much as the actions themselves"

This series is amazing. If you've read the first five books then you know this already and you don't need my review.

If you're new to Auryn Hadley, or to this series, then do yourself a favour and start reading today. Fabulous characters you'll fall in love with, political intrigue, thrilling battles and no cliffhangers.

Very highly recommended.

I have a huge book hangover. Least sleep had in long time, whole series so far in less than a week. Cried many times and sucked in completely.

Loved the characters and the world created. Looking forward to sleep now caught up. If next book was out, id just kept reading😴

REREAD: JULY 2022
Rise of the Iliri is one of my favourite epic fantasy series, and I'm doing a reread after the author released updated versions of all the books.

Resilience is the sixth book (of 11) in the Rise of the Iliri series by Auryn Hadley. In this instalment, it feels like the action slows down to take a back seat while Sal and the Black Blades get stuck navigating a vicious political back and forth with their former home nation, the Conglomerate of Free Citizens.

I can’t lie, the plot of this book becomes frustrating at times. It felt like 400 pages of waiting for the CFC to make up their minds and for things to move along. The constant going in circles with the politicians (we want your help, we don't need your help)was enough to drive me crazy - and I guess it was the same for Sal too.

That being said, I genuinely love this series, and despite the frustrations, there are still some standout moments for Sal as she faces down her former oppressors. The ending is really good too!

If like me, you really enjoy epic high fantasy novels with a strong, independent heroine and intense action sequences, you should pick this up asap!

This was probably one of my least favourite reads out of the series so far…
I just felt like there was a lot of filler moments that didn’t really contribute a significant amount to the story.
I mean, sure, they had a small purpose but I found myself getting a bit bored at times.

Not to mention, there was so much repetitiveness in this book and going back and forth and back again that it was frustrating and irritating.
For instance, how Sal returns to the CFC parliament because they demand her help with Terric but then at every meeting they ask “well why should we let you do this?” And “what’s in it for us?” or “how can we trust you?” Etc etc.
Also her constantly repeating why the Iliri are better and having to consistently prove to these fucks what she can do and explain herself over and over.
It was just irking me like make some fucking progress already!?
Eventually they did at the end but seriously? It took the whole book just to come to a consensus.

Also, on another note, there was the situation with Kolt, who is clearly madly in love with Sal and she obviously has a major thing for him but they continue to go from being more intimate with each other to pushing each other away.
It’s just getting to a point where it’s getting predictable and again, feeling repetitive.
They know they are supposed to be together then decide to be friends but still have this pull and attraction which indicates to anyone reading this that eventually, he will be part of the harem.
Listen, I respect a slow burn but this is just too much push and pull for me.
Neither of them can settle on what they want when it comes to each other and I just want to scream at my book saying “JUST GET IT OVER WITH ALREADY!!!!”.
I do appreciate how caring and loving Kolt is with her; I mean, the man lets her use his eyes to cry for her dead lover ffs.
That’s why I just want to see him be included already; yet he constantly feels like he needs to prove himself and she doesn’t know what to feel right now.
*sigh*
I hope they can get their shit together in the next book.

Something that did break me in this book, which is precisely why I gave it even 3 stars (because it made me cry my eyes out), was when Kolt found the letter from Blaec in his sword scabbard.
He’s been carrying Blaecs blade and Blaec knew from his visions before he died that Kolt would be the one to carry it; thus, leaving him a letter regarding his place in Sals life.
That part alone had me completely sobbing and contemplating everything from the first book.
Just knowing he knew he would die way before Sal even came into his life and understanding that it’s something he had to do so that she could thrive, completely crushed my heart and soul.
He was so pure and unselfish for going through everything he did and he could have stopped that future so many times but he knew, for her sake, he had to follow through.
He literally sacrificed his life and his love for her.
It was so beautifully written and had me utterly gasping in despair.

Something else I need to complain about is finding out that Zep had a baby girl with Ryali before he got with Sal. He met her towards the end of the book and obviously fell in love with his little girl. Sal is so happy for them and actually promises she will be a Blade one day…. It just doesn’t sit right with me honestly.
I know Sal sees things differently but I would have been a little bit upset.
And yes, I know it was before they got together but Zep was clearly in love with Sal from the beginning and then he just goes and has a family with this other Iliri woman???
Granted he probably didn’t know it at the time but this bitch knew she was 6 months pregnant while he was still around and didn’t say a word… and now he’s with his literal soul mate and it gets revealed to him?
Puts a bad taste in my mouth for real.
This Ryali girl pisses me off and I don’t think Sal should just accept her, considering she lied to Zep in the first place.

And I know Kolt also has a kid but Sal didn’t really know him yet and it was so long ago, not to mention the kid is named after her and he hasn’t been able to touch anyone else in years because he was so obsessed with her from the very first time he met her in slavery.
Also his iliri woman didn’t bother to claim him at all.
That’s so different in my mind.
Idk it’s just going to annoy me that Zep has this connection now with another Iliri woman and shares a kid with her and the kid will be around Sal and the gang.
I don’t like it.
Like was it really necessary to add that in the book?
I don’t think so.
I think it just adds more confusion and promotes Zep spending more time with his kid and the other iliri woman.
Gross.

Anyways,
There was eventually some progress on the political front and the relationship front in this book, it just didn’t feel monumental.
This book could have not happened and it wouldn’t have felt that much different from book 5.
I just hope to see some more major changes in book 7 because I’m done with things just teetering on an edge back and forth like they did in this book.
Give me some real spice and some significant milestones so that I can stay invested; because at this point I’m just needing to read a pallet cleanser between these books and that’s not a good sign.
I’m giving myself a break between this book and the next but I’m hoping the next instalment keeps me on my toes and grasping for the next one in the series because it was just that good.
We shall see.

~3 stars~

Still Strong

This book is somewhat of a resting point. Sal, the Blades and Anglia are still hard at work, but thanks to the CFC making demands, they have to make a trip. They manage to get things hashed out, but it was an uphill battle.

Sal is struggling to go on and I can't blame her. She misses him, but also realized that even though he loved her and she loved him, he wasn't quite the right fit. In some ways, he was kind of holding a place. He was still important and still good for Sal even with the numerous screw ups he made, but it seems that place was meant a little more for someone else and I'm liking that guy quite a bit.

Sal herself isn't perfect either. She makes some rash actions at times, including in this book and those actions almost destroyed what she was trying to do, but thanks to some good people, she got what she wanted. I was glad she got to have some beautiful moments with her mates and some pretty moving ones with Kolt as well. There was a rather lovely reunion as well and a rather big surprise. Artic and Shade are adorable and I still wonder if Audgan will be a part of that someday. I like his friendship with Kolt as well. Geo got a moment to shine as well.

The Anglian humans of the 275th Archer's also got to shine. I rather like those guys. We even got to see the bookstore owner again and Nya got to prove herself.

Now I'm wondering if we'll see the two purebred illiri girls the Unavi rebels have been hiding next. I wonder where they came from? The same experiment as Sal and Reko? How did they end up in Unav? Guess we'll find out.

I’m a sucker for an epic fantasy and rise of the iliri is one of the best. Auryn Hadley is up there with Raymond Feist, Brent Weeks and Brandon Sanderson as one of my favourite epic fantasy authors.

Like previous books in the series resilience is fast paced, action packed, well developed and beautifully written

Sal is still reading from Blaec’s death and is on her way to the CFC to try to make an alliance. The events in book 5 have shaken Sal and she doesn’t want to have to lose anyone else. I like the relationship between her and Kolt and seeing them deal with their own uncertainties. I loved the date with Zep and the friendship between Sal and Rayna.

I 100% recommend this series

I 100% recommend this series
This series is absolutely incredible and I'm kinda glad it was already finished when I started because immediately after finishing a book I had to start the next.

The story is beautiful and runs the whole spectrum of emotions. I absolutely adore the characters. I'm going to miss reading about them but the ending was one of the best I've ever read.

Start to finish this story is amazing and the amount of detail is wonderful.

Can I just say, I have the biggest book hangover now because I'm waiting on book 7?

So I've been sucking into Sals world since the beginning. I've laughed, growled, cheered, CRIED, and fell in love. Just saying I can't believe LT is dead & The bastard knew about the whole time. smh but that was a heart wrenching plot twist. && for Kolton to be there and save her from herself is awe inspiring. besides Jase & Zep, Kolt is her support. The fated one that is in denial. Maybe in book 7, both Kolt and Sal will accept the truth. I gotta say, I'm kinda pissed that Zep has a baby with some other woman. Yea they dated, but still. I find it wrong in so many ways. I would have been pissed. I know it's just their ways, but still, I would rather have not.

Well fingers crossed that this series ends with a positive ending and no more heart break ♡

I have really enjoyed this series, but there are some glaring things in this book that are making the story hard to understand and believe in, which is why I gave this book a 3 star rating.

1) It's getting repetitive and as a result, a little preachy. Now, what they're preaching is good stuff, no doubt...but I get it. Can we move on, please? I got it the first ten times you wrote about it.

2) The story is written so that we sympathize with the Iliri by how they are treated by the humans, which I agree with. Breeding, slavery, forced conscription and prostitution are all horrific. But, the reason for why the humans treat Iliri this way is never really flushed out, and if you think about it a little bit, it makes sense a bit, and I'll explain.

Humans hate and fear Iliri, and well, they kind of have a point. Iliri eat humans. It's described in the story as almost a necessary part of Iliri diet, that the iron in human blood is important for the Iliri to be strong. And on top of that, if an Iliri is cut or bled, they will enter maast, which is like a frenzy. Human flesh is something that takes care of the maast, as well as killing and sex. Iliri and humans have been living together for thousands of years, so it's not hard to imagine that this could be an issue. Imagine a scene where a group of human children are playing in the street and two iliri get into a fight. They punch each other and split their lips, they enter maast and they have three choices.... to fuck, kill, or eat. Do you see where I'm going with this? Sal could barely keep from eating her friend who'd saved her from Terric because he was close to her in the maast, and she is described as having great control. Imagine iliri who don't have her control. Human flesh is seen almost as a drug to iliri, hard for them to resist. Those children would either be murdered, eaten, or raped, possibly all three. It's like fish trying to live and be friends with sharks or gazelle with hyenas, so while I sympathize with the Iliri, I don't understand why this isn't flushed out more.

They briefly ask the question about what is going to happen when the war is over and there are no more enemies to eat, but no one has any answers, and its not a stretch to believe that this whole thing will come full circle again or the iliri enslave the humans and use them as cattle. And who knows, maybe this is the author's intention, but right now it just seems like a glaring plot hole that's avoided so we don't sympathize with the humans and think that they might have a point.

3) There is a disclosure at the end of the synopsis of each book warning that the story is 18+ because of the hot, steamy, erotic sex....which is almost non-existent. Like, possible four times in 6 books. If your going to promote your book for hot, steamy sex and romance...you might want to actually include some...

It starts with a secret...”
I thought this series would be a quick read... I was so wrong. There is so much detail, so many characters and places to pay attention to, new words to remember, signals and call signs to give attention to. Battles and training are described and referred to at later times. Relationships and alliances are described, detailed, etc. then put into the background to be remembered and used later. This series is a work of art in the way that Hadley sets everything up to have a purpose. An alliance formed in book one doesn’t make sense until book five, a favor owed and a life saved in book two doesn’t come back up until book four. So much care and thought went into the planning of these books, that much is clear.
Warning: They are long. But totally worth the read.

Book 6: Resilience
Well. The Blades, and Sal especially, are trying to hold themselves together. Syrik, or Kolton, or Kolt, is awesome and one of my new favorite characters.
Rayna, a former Congomerate soldier, turned Consort to a king, turned Anglian, turned best friend to the last Kaisae. She’s a badass and Hadley did a great job by giving Sal a female best friend in her. It adds a lot to the story line while helping explain some parts, and guide others that would be too spotty without her presence. “Thanks Ray. You’re the only one who seems willing to tell me when I’m being a complete bitch.” (Sal to Rayna).
Blaz, Dom, Rayna, Nya... all awesome. The people, the characters, the time and effort put into the body movements and touch... that is the reason to read these books. And this book uses it so well.
There is a lot of politics and posturing in this book, which has its place in others but not nearly as much. It was kind of boring, but skipable so not a huge hindrance. Honestly, Sal gets very irritated with politics, and my own irritation with it in the reading just made me understand her more as a character, as a Kaisae, and as an Iliri in a world run by humans. So there’s that.
“You don’t like me because I’m Iliri. I don’t like you because you’re a liar. So what do you propose we do now?” (Sal) I’m dying of laughter right now.
Finally, for this sixth book, remember that Blaec sees the future... and it sucks and makes your eyes water like crazy... but wow.

My ongoing review for this entire series as I read is at kyyzillathebookdevourer.blogspot.com

This series is incredible. It's fantastic, addictive and it's one that I will always remember.

That being said, I won't be continuing this series. I've never had this happen to me before so it's a new feeling. I can't continue this series. Not because I hate it but because I've lost interest and I've lost the connection to these characters.

My favorite was Blaec. We all know what happened last book, haven't quite gotten over it. That being said, I thought surely I would still enjoy this series, it's amazing! But alas, no. I could barely do it. Blaec just left this massive whole that will never be replaced. There's no one to keep me invested. I was hoping for Blaec to finally become cessivi....dreams crushed.

I think it's the way that it happened, the way the author wrote it that has me turning away from this series. Putting words on a paper telling us something but having us feel something opposite from the (actions of the characters) was what really did it for me. It started with the last book. The new replacement guy, Kolt said he was with Sal because he didn't think she'd make it back. But that wasn't what I got from the actions. Sal knows that Kolt means something more to her but yet she still slept with him, knowing it wasn't truly maast, it was something that would lead to more. It may be human of me but how do you even do that when your supposed to be grieving someone you truly 'love'? In this book, there are the same type of examples. You are told that these characters miss Blaec but you don't really feel it. It happens with other stuff as well.

Also, Zep having a kid....not a fan of it personally. It may be that human part of me again. But things will change between Zep and Sal now. It's natural and it can't not happen. I don't want to see that change. He's my second favorite. I can't see that relationship lose something or not be the same.

It's been a great ride. Overall: 4/5

Get knocked down, but get up again, ...

Sal has been dealt a devastating blow. With Kolt's help, then the 112th's, she made it back to her pack. Only to have the CFC demand, demand, she agree to a treaty. One she'd already offered but was run off from for being a beast. Well, this beast is pissed. Pissed at the emperor, pissed at the war, pissed at ayati, and at the stupid humans who control the CFC who think they can yank her chain. Smelling lies makes negotiations easy and an old foe is spewing them for all he's worth. Sal isn't giving up on her people and those humans are about to see the beasts they created in all their glory. She's not hiding skills anymore. She's done playing games.

Spoilers ahead.
The dance continues. Sal is grieving. Not like an Iliri, not like a human, but a mixture of both. Raised human, but with her instincts, reactions vary. Iliri always look ahead, humans tens to dwell. Sal does both. But she has an amazing pack, strong mates and more friends than she knew she had. I absolutely love her and Rayna bonding. The delicate steps with Kolt. Pig and crew deciding to thwart fate. Parliament seeing the repercussions of their bigotry. While the focus of this one seems more narrow, we're actually given so much insight it's a little overwhelming. I know I rave a little, ok, a lot, but this series truly is epic. A long and sustained story arc, a hundred mini plots woven in, dozens of personal relationships- some overlapping, multiple wars (Terric, CFC vs Iliri, Iliri vs human, Sal vs ayati, Sal vs herself, ...), balancing 3 species with a million viewpoints across the spectrum, and oh, just about a dozen other things all vying for the reader's attention. That each book is so eagerly awaited, received and reread so many times is the mark of an amazing author. And that each reread, no matter how many, reveals another clue you don't know how you missed before? Yeah. I'm going to rave a little lol.

Better because it’s less

This book dragged a lot less than the others. In previous books in the series it seemed like the book was stuck in a loop with issues. The author continued to beat a dead horse with the characters struggling to come to terms. This book wasn’t like that. The characters, mostly Sal, worked through emotional baggage bit by bit. They listen and responded to the advice they received, which helped keep the story moving forward.

This book had the iliri talking a lot less superior (Iliri are better than humans). Sal still had her moments here and there, but it wasn’t nearly as bad. It definitely rubs me wrong that the oppressed seem to take on the mindset of the oppressor. I’m hoping as the series continues that Sal starts pushing for equality rather than dominance and superiority.

It’s odd, but I like this book more than a lot of the other books in the series for what it’s lacking. It’s reduced the redundancy that I’ve hated and the I’m better than you aspects.

Really does keep getting better and better.

This series is what I want to read when I read an epic sci-fi/ fantasy mash of everything. I've loved every moment and keep loving it. Although moments feel "slow" in this one, there is just so much happening at every moment and I just had to keep reading to find out more!

Please note that this review is for the SERIES, not the individual book.

Ok. I don't know where to begin. I want to say ALL the things because this series is all kinds of amazing. There is a not zero chance that my excitement may get away with me, so please excuse any seemingly random bits of rambling.

First off, this is an 11 book completed series that absolutely MUST be read in order as a series. You won't make heads nor tails of it if you try to pick and choose. This series is a little similar to the Five Fangs series by Mary Ann Weir. While there is a main character and her harem, this one also has a lot of communal storylines and relationships. It's one of the few 3rd person PoV that I have truly enjoyed, as it gives a better perspective on the entire experience. And this IS an experience.

A.H. Hadley is a master wordsmith. I've read most of her bibliography and enjoyed all of it. I was a bit skeptical about this series as 11 books are a heckuva commitment. I've been it recommended everywhere though, so I finally decided to give it a shot, and I wish I could personally thank every person who suggested it.

Her world building is a skill that most authors could learn from. From the rich history of the land and people to the customs and motives of the people, I was constantly taking information in and assimilating it from one book to the next. The true talent, though, is the fact that I never once felt overwhelmed by it.

The foundation is beautifully laid for the complex web of plotlines that permeates this story. There are plots within plots and plans without plans. Rise of the Iliri is a masterwork of the uncertain. I THOUGHT I knew what I was getting into. At numerous times while reading, I THOUGHT I knew what to expect. I was unprepared, and I loved every moment.

I do disagree with many of my fellow readers, however. This series was recommended as a reverse harem romance, but I'm just not sold on that. Yes, romance plays a part in the story arc. Yes, there are multiple men in a relationship with one woman. So, I guess that technically, they are correct. But it is so much more. The author labels it as "a complete epic science-fantasy story." I personally think it's more of a space opera. There is romance, but also anger and hatred, good verses evil, overcoming adversity, and amazing action sequences, plus plenty more that I can't find the words for. (But for the smut hounds, there are ample shenanigans which are relatively detailed and beautifully written)

The characters are never two dimensional. They start out fully fleshed out, but as the story progresses, they change. Traits become deeper. Thoughts become richer. They grow - as individuals as well as the groups. Especially Sal, the female main character. She has an entire evolution/metamorphosis arc that is without compare. I have never read anything quite like it.

If I could, I would rate this series as an 8 out of 5 stars. It exceeded my expectations in every way. Yes, it is a time commitment, but in all honesty, I didn't realize it. I started reading in book 1 and it consumed my attention until I closed book 11.

Please stop reading here if spoilers in the form of content warnings are a deal breaker for you. This series has some heavy s#!t in it that I wasn't really prepared for, so I'm going to let you in on it. Mental health matters.

Expect graphic vi0|ence, gore, a metric crap ton of unaliving, grief & loss, past SA for several characters, extreme prejudice & discrimination as well as humiliation and degradation (and not the kinky fun kind.) The FMC was conscripted into the military from her owner's home. Slavery is all through this story, so be prepared. And this is the one that kinda frakked me up - one of the MCs dies. Usually, I pass on books where that is in the content warning, however, in this instance, it becomes a jumping off point for the continuing progression of the story. I would encourage you to not let that particular TW prevent you from an otherwise truly remarkable reading experience.

I'm finally reviewing one of my all-time favourite reverse harem series!!

Rise of The Iliri follows our FMC Sal, the last of the pale-skinned Iliri race, as she collects mates, kicks butt and changes nations.

This series is spectacular, I have yet to find a series that matches this one in world-building, depth of character, and plot twists. I love each of Sal's mates, they all felt individual to me (despite there being a lot of them), and I enjoyed not only their relationship with Sal but how they interacted with the other characters. I couldn't even pick a favourite, they all offer such different things to Sal. I loved that each of their relationships felt different and yet the author was able to pull them in together towards the end of the series into one network. I will warn however there are 'favourites' within the harem, so if this is something that bothers you keep that in mind! I didn't feel that this necessarily detracted from the other members of the harem however.

The storyline kept me pulled in throughout the series despite being so long, with plenty of violence and suspense juxtaposed with loving moments and relationship building. I won't spoil the plot but let me say that Sal finds her power with the help of her mates and other allies throughout the series! I loved her growth throughout the series and I felt that the ending was fitting. Be warned though, it was not an easy journey for the characters and there is a good chance the events of this series will leave you in tears! The ending is worth it though, and there is even an extended epilogue (book 11) to round out the series and give us a taste of what was like for Sal and family following the events of the previous books.

All in all, there is a special place in my heart for this series and I've yet to find one that truly measures up to the experience of reading Sal's story. If you're looking for a series that explores modern themes in a high fantasy world with plenty of why-choose love and violence, this series is for you!

As always, check your trigger warnings because this series gets intense!

Burn: slow-medium (builds throughout series)

Spice: 5/5 (in later books)

Harem size: large (builds throughout series)

M/M: no

While this definitely wasn't Tenacity , it was still pretty okey. The thing is, now that I actually have an understanding of how amazing these books have the potential to be, I have higher expectations of the writing. You cannot blow my mind and break my heart with the beauty that was the writing of the previous book, and then just go back to an average writing and simply expect me to take it. No way, no how. I expect more from the seventh!

About the story itself, well. First of all, I like that the time gap was smaller here. The way time flow in these books always confused me, but at least here it was easier to bare.
Most of the book was filled with petty political drama and the Blades trying to deal with their grief, which honestly seemed way too easy for them to do. There were quite a few times when Blaec was spoken of in not the best light and I did not like it. I absolutely did not want anyone to demean the memory of him in any way. That's just not right.
The politics, well. There's not much to say there - humans are stupid and CFC seemed to have collected the most stupid individuals of them all and put them in the Parliament. Figures.
The prospects of Sal staying alive and sane.. now that is an interesting topic. Somehow I never actually caught it about the other Kaisaes and what happened to them. I mean, holding all of that power inside one body, plus the memory of everything she's been through and the prospect of everything she has yet to face? That is enough to drive anyone insane. Although, somehow I just don't see that happening to Sal. So far these books have not been the best at pulling of plot twist, so I'm sure she'll pull through.

In other news, am I the only one who's constantly annoyed by that arrogant waitress from Tensa's? Can someone just knock her out and leave her behind?

So yeah. All in all, while this book was okey, I really hope that the next one is better.

I read books 1-8 in quick succession so am giving a review on the series, to date.

The world building is excellent. Humans colonize a distant world, low on metals and with indigenous life. Thousands of years later, the resulting society is one of basically medieval tech, but with ceramics and resin replacing metals. Very clever extrapolation and made more interesting with the integration of the indigenous life.

The series is both a Sci-Fi/Paranormal-esque epic adventure and a romance. The heat level of the romance rises throughout the series, not hitting 'erotic' levels until about Book 7 and starting relatively low, though all well written at the heat levels they're at. I mention this because this switch/transition may surprise some readers. At times, the balance between the epic adventure and the romance is off a bit, throwing off the pacing of the overall story, but not so much as to want you to stop reading - it remains engaging throughout.

The plot, and plot twists, of the epic adventure are well done, creating a well-crafted story that could stand alone, even without the romance. There are some quibbles around how the military is organized, specifically around unit sizes and organization, but unless you have a background in the area or read a lot of military fantasy/historicals you probably won't notice. The fight scenes are well done, even if all in the contexts of small skirmishes.

Overall, I'm thoroughly enjoying this series. It's based in a wonderfully crafted world and includes some amazing elements. It's only some nits about how these elements are put together that keeps this from getting 5 stars.

I'm still not over what happened in the previous book so I honestly can't say I enjoyed this book. Add to the fact that it was mostly about how the conglomerate just kept on and on about the alliance and political BS and well it was even less enjoyable. It only got "interesting" in the last few chapters and it was just in the Parliament "riot" scene. I was not ok with how they so easily wanted to move on from Blaec, even encouraging Sal to move on with Kolt. And using the Sal/we are Illiri excuse is BS because aren't Illiri supposed to "love completely and deeply"? The letter from Blaec was a nice touch and the fact that at least Sal isn't as ok as the rest to jump into bed with Kolt made me tolerate the book a bit more. However, it pissed me off how some talked badly about Blaec and even Sal said that he was weak. SERIOUSLY?! The man died for you and your species and you call him weak?! Really not ok with that. Also, it honestly felt like the author dragged on the same issue as in previous books. I hope the next book has a bit of a faster pace because I am honestly losing my interest and the first couple of books where actually good.

Are you guys for fuckin real? We’re just all gonna be ok with Ryali popping back up in Zep’s life with his kid that she didn’t tell him about?

And Sal allows him to touch her? Hell no.

I don’t care if it’s cupping her cheek (still intimate). He has no business putting hands on someone, even if she is a short fling. I said what I said. 🤷🏻‍♀️👏🏻

What the hell, bitches?

This was a SUPPPPPPPER unnecessary sub plot. So now we have Kolt’s son and the two pups from the hounds, plus the bastard child of Zep’s.

🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

I want to say I’ll continue the series, but I’m having a hard time. There’s a lot of shit being recycled and regurgitated in the plot and not a whole lot of new stuff is happening. Kolt and Sal constantly dancing around being mates and her being a dumb bitch about it was frustrating.

I’m also not really digging the Shade and Artic sub plot. I just don’t like shade in general. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, this is not steamy. It’s damn near fade to black with maybe 4 scenes in 6 books. There’s only so much nonsense I can take.

Sal is maybe the smartest dumbest character I’ve ever seen. Intellectually brilliant but wildly emotionally stunted.
