I Can Fix That

Rate this book
June Hart is an affectionate and chatty first-grade teacher who comes from a family of wealthy, money-driven doctors, except her grandmother. When June inherits her grandmother's 1920's farmhouse, she is compelled to remodel it, hoping to show her egotistical family she is capable of being more than an insubstantial teacher. In the process, she finds herself spending a considerable amount of time with her hot and ill-tempered contractor, Grant Dawes. Grant Dawes is a grouchy handyman who can seem to fix everything except his troubled past. His lack of family and friends leaves him to put all of his focus on restoring homes. That is until a polka dot, crocheting, vanilla coke-obsessed client pushes her way in to throw off his routines. When he falls for his sweet-natured client, June Hart, Grant is forced to confront his complicated history to have a future with her.

Juliana Smith grew up in an Alabama small town and still calls it home―along with her husband, daughter, two dogs, and an ever-growing collection of unfinished stories to come. She writes sweet, feel-good romance full of charm, laughter, and just the right amount of yearning. When she’s not falling in love with her fictional characters, she’s probably in the Chick-fil-A drive-thru or deep-diving into Star Wars theory podcasts.

Juliana believes in happily ever afters, second chances, and that life is better when you’re laughing (preferably with a Diet Dr Pepper in hand).

It was….. cute
A super quick read technically but it was so boring to be honest

Do you know those kind of TV shows where you don’t have to pay attention to watch them?
This book felt that way
You could read it but didn’t really have to concentrate on that.

June also wasn’t my type of woman
Nothing deep.

Grumpy? Sunshine? Jessica Day influence?
The cupcake scene???
You have to read this book. Grant and June are adorable people in a difficult world, and the way they fall for each other will leave you wishing you could punch a hole in the wall so a dreamy contractor will come fix it for you. The writing style is quick and cute, and I’m not lying when I say I read this book in one sitting. As someone who doesn’t love steam but appreciates some good tension, the balance was just right for me to fall in love with these two sweeties. And the secondary characters are just as fun to follow as the main attractions!
I can’t keep going or I’m going to spoil it all, but trust me: this is a fun, light romance that will make you feel warm and fuzzy and maybe bring some tears. Highly recommend.

The cover of this book was absolutely adorable. And the premise was a basic grumpy x sunshine, enemies to lovers, but unfortunately it just fell flat.

Grant was a very surface character to me and it made it hard to believe when he became protective of June or in love with her. I was distracted by how often the book changed tenses and by the sheer amount of descriptions everywhere. As a reader you were constantly just being told things instead of letting them develop.

Overall this book felt rushed and needed some refining. Unfortunately this just wasn’t for me.

I Can Fix That is a sweet and beautiful small town romance filled with a lot of charm with a grumpy hero that will leave you incredibly giddy!

I can't believe this is Juliana's debut, because this was done so incredibly well! For such a short story, it packed a lot without never feeling overwhelming. June wants to renovate her grandma's house, despite her mom constantly calling to tell her to sell it. When Ashley, June's BFF, suggests hiring Grant for the renovation, June is immediate to turn down the idea; he is the grump of the town after all. But being desperate, June hires him

"I would rather live one day getting to know you than a million years without you in my life."

I've been sitting here trying to write my review, but it's so hard! This was such a great Romance novel that I don't know how to put everything into words, but I'll try. Mr. Grant surprised me in so many ways. He started off so serious and truly grumpy, but June wormed her way into his life, which made him start to leave his grumpiness aside. And y'all, when that man started to smile and wink and tell her to text him when she'd get home and grab June's stray hairs to brush them behind her ear...... I MELTED! I loved how he would try to do anything to spend time with her.

I tend to recommend spicy books, and I do want to say this isn’t a spicy romance. There's barely fade to black since those scenes get cut off even before getting to that point (I think I've read YA books getting past a few bases than this book did). I would have loved to read that side of Grant and June, but all in all, their chemistry is glorious!

"It's not like you want anything with me." My voice was just over a whisper, scared of his response to come.

Grant placed his beer down and took a step closer to me, his mouth merely inches from mine. He placed a loose strand of hair behind my ear, and goosebumps raised down my arms. He whispered intensely in my ear, his lips lightly brushing against me.

"You have no idea what I want."

And taking it a step further, I had no idea playing pool could be this hot:

"Now take the shaft and wrap your hand around it. Yeah, like that. Now put the tip exactly where you want it."

I read and enjoyed Juliana Smith's other book Baggage Claim a few months ago, so I was excited to pick this one up, but unfortunately, I Can Fix That did not work for me.

While I loved the premise and felt this book had so much potential, I couldn't get on board with June and Grant's love story. The insta-love nature of their relationship came a bit too out of nowhere for me, and it felt like the author hadn't properly built up the chemistry and connection between the two.

I also wasn't a big fan of June. She is a people pleaser and a pushover, and instead of seeing her grow throughout the story, we see Grant take on the role of pushing back for her. Even up until the very end of the story when she makes the decision to I would have loved to see a lot more growth from June like we did with Grant.

This book did not feel ready to be published. There are a lot of typos, tense changes and other editing things that took me out of the story as I was reading. I saw on Instagram the author is planning on re-releasing the book with new chapters and stronger editing, so it might be worth checking out later down the line, especially if you enjoyed Baggage Claim as much as I did!

As soon as I saw this book at my local bookstore, I knew I just had to buy it! The cover was beautiful and it was Juliana Smith's debut novel, so I had high hopes. The book was also just recently published this summer. It really lived up to my expectations! This rom-com was the cutest, so heartwarming, and perfect to binge read.

After getting to know June Hart a little more, I really admired her for her patience with children and her dedication to remodel her grandmother's 1920's farmhouse. It was so emotional to see her struggle with her family of money-hungry doctors when she is just a first-grade teacher. June's hopes to show her egotistical family that she is capable of being more than an insubstantial teacher really made me empathize with her because I also take my family's approval of me very much to heart. June's personality makes me want to have a friend like her in my life!

I enjoyed the character development of Grant, June's contractor and love interest. He started off unlikable, but became easily loveable as the story went along. All of the scenes with Grant and June were adorable and all I wanted to do was root for them. All things set aside, I wish the book could've included more of Grant's POV and didn't change from present to past tense so often. It became kind of distracting. But other than that, it was such a good book overall!

I would recommend this book to teenagers and adults who are looking for a wholesome and uplifting romance story with loveable characters. This book was super hard to put down. I can't wait to read more of Juliana's books after this stellar debut!

"I will always call you Hart till I can one day call you Dawes."
— Grant Dawes, I Can Fix That by Juliana Smith

What a great debut novel! It was the absolute cutest and sweetest. I loved the grumpy-sunshine dynamic between Grant and June as well as the relationship of their respective best friends. The aspects regarding June's occupation and how her family views her was something I particularly enjoyed. I think it's a very relatable thing to feel as if you're separated from them merely because you have very different views. However, I wish it was talked about a bit more, especially on how it was resolved with her mother.

The romance was very typical rom-com which is obviously a great thing. It was so cute how the title 'I Can Fix That' played into the characters conversations and how we come to learn the meaning behind it. If you're looking for a fast-paced rom-com between a sweet, sunshine teacher and a grumpy handyman then this one's for you.

Thank you to the author, Juliana Smith, for providing me with this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!

5 / 5 💌🧚🏼‍♀️🧸🧁

This book was like a warm cup of coffee and a cupcake. It was so sweet and I adored every second of it. The small town, Grant & June, ugh, I freaking adored them. It was so cute, and easy to read. I binged it within a couple of hours, the writing was so easy to devour. I ordered the paperback whilst I was reading because I wanted to own and annotate it immediately. This was a grumpy x sunshine romance to a tee and I loved it, it was done so well. The characters had depth.

His souvenirs for her. The photo. The flower picking.

We love a grump who's head over heels for a girl. And the epilogue was just perfect for them and the story. I cannot wait to read more from this author.

A (very generous) 3 stars....
I wanted to like this book - it had great potential to be a cute rom-com, but there were some elements that I just couldn't get past.
First, the mechanics. Oh, the mechanics. If it were just a few instances of subject verb agreement, I could overlook it. BUT it happened. A LOT. the verb tense switched from past to present in the same sentence. Secondly, Grant. He went from a grumpy, depressed, recluse to a love-sick puppy in no time. He seemed like two different people from beginning to end - and not just because he made changes in his life, it was more like two completely different personalities. A sweet story with some fun moments, but not one I would re-read.

DNF: 30 pages

The references to June’s profession irked me. The conditions teachers, and their students, face was oversimplified. June notes that with over a month remaining in the school year her students are just revising and having ‘free time’ whilst she sits on Pinterest. For a teacher who previously noted that she would do what she could to support her students who ‘struggle’, her approach in the classroom seems apathetic. As a teacher myself, I found this portrayal of educators tokenistic. In later chapters June engages in a conversation about her ‘favourite student’, noting that she cannot choose. This goes against the philosophy of any teacher who should be in a classroom; our students are there to be taught not pitted against each other on a hierarchy constructed by adults who spend their professional time not educating but classifying students’ in terms of their worth to them. I was offended by this portrayal.

June constantly notes that others perceive her as young, though there is no evidence of anyone saying this, it’s just her perception. June is painted as naive and incapable by her own narration.

The best friend makes jokes about diabetes and heart attacks whilst shaming her friend for her drink choice (a sugar free drink at that). What is the purpose here other than to normalise food and body shaming whilst making light of serious illnesses?

Typos and tense switches detracted from the storyline.

✨ABSOLUTE PERFECTION✨

GUYS, THIS BOOK. I can’t shout enough about how much I loved it. Grant and June are what dreams are made of. This story has all the light, warm fuzzies of a rom com while also delivering all the emotional depth and tenderness that’s often lacking in rom coms. Without spoiling anything, this book deals with some really tough trauma, while also showing how love and vulnerability truly can conquer all.

Some of my favorite things:
- the flowers 💐
- the letters 😍😍😍
- brand new picture frame
- standing on the paint cans
- “I can fix that”

Juliana has truly found the secret sauce to the perfect romance novel and I CANNOT WAIT to see what she comes up with next! Fans of Sarah Adams and B.K. Borison will love this book!

Read if you love:
- grumpy/sunshine ☀️
- hgtv 🔨
- emotional intimacy
- southernisms and sweet southern charm
- “I hate everyone but you” vibes
- found family
- cracked open door romance (just a peek 🫣)

I am wrecked. In the best way possible. I’m so sad this sweet story is over and very jealous of anyone who picks it up for the first time. A grouchy contractor, an adorable teacher, a home remodel, and a lot of love - Just what I needed to keep the Sunday scaries at bay. I loved I Can Fix That with every ounce of my being.

I really wanted to read this book, but after the tense changed several times before the third chapter I knew I wouldn’t be able to focus on anything else. There were also a few formatting errors that made it difficult to tell who was saying what. With a few fixes this would be a cute book.

Also this was a book about a teacher and it’s clear the author is not one.

A solid debut!

Quirky teacher June Hart inherits a house from her grandmother that isn't really in the best of conditions. She enlists the help of skilled yet grumpy contractor Grant Dawes, aka the same man she ran into in the hardware store the year prior. The renovation forces them to spend time together and June finds herself falling for the elusive and misunderstood man. Grant reciprocates, but is begrudgingly held back by a painful past. His growing feelings for June might just be the nudge he needs to realize that the houses he's working on aren't the only ones that need fixing in his life.

The cover perfectly represents the book because this is super cute! This book plays on the grump-sunshine dynamic between a very colorful heroine and a grouchy hero. Even from the prologue, sparks already started flying. Talk about a meet cute! I love a hero who loses his words in front of a fascinating woman.

Grant is the quintessential grump who falls head over heels for a woman he can't help but be sweet to, and he falls pretty fast. This trait may be a deal breaker for some but I loved seeing it. He definitely had his walls up, but rather than being annoying, he proved to be an endearing character with his extreme sweetness towards the heroine.

As for June, I freaking love that woman. She has a heart of gold and I personally want to be her friend. I loved seeing her serve as the bright light that showed Grant the wonderful potential of their relationship despite his reluctance.

This was a simply written story that grabbed my attention from the start to end. I think it's worth pointing out that the title of this book was cleverly used. "I can fix that" is pretty much Grant's tagline. It's quite the irony since Grant is a fixer especially when it comes to June yet he never took the time to "fix" the emotional baggage that keeps plaguing him.

Positives aside, I also think it's worth mentioning that this book has a few technical errors (I really think one particular use of the word "drugged" should actually be "dragged"). Likewise, there were dialogues that got me confused with which character is talking to who.

Also, this romance is closed-door. As much as I wouldn't want to judge it as something that it isn't or trying to be, I really think this book would have been better off as an open-door one, even for just one or two intimate scenes.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read! This author is a promising player in the romance genre for sure. Highly recommended for people needing a little sugary sweetness in their lives!

Grumpy x sunshine & small town romance??? Sign me the hell up! ☀️😍 Also the cover? STUNNING!

This was one of the sweetest romance books I've read in a while and now all I can think about is June and Grant 🥹

This is the perfect romance to binge read in one sitting. It was lighthearted, fun, absolutely adorable and I promise, you will fall in love with both June and Grant 🫶🏼 oh and a special mention to the side characters, they were amazing too!

June is an absolute angel. Seriously I want.. no *need* her to be my bestie! She has the kindest heart & soul and all you'll want to do is root for her.

Grant is a very grumpy contractor who (no surprise here) I fell hard for 😍
He might've been unapproachable, guarded and rude in the beginning (and for good reason 🥺) but once their relationship blossomed and he opened up more, you could see him for the big softy he really was. The little things he would do just to make her happy and feel loved will give you butterflies 🦋

For a book on the shorter side, it was packed full of emotions. My heart warmed but also broke for both of these characters and I loved their development throughout. The only thing I wish we had more of would be Grant's POV but honestly that's my only complaint.

If you're looking for a very sweet, heartwarming romance story with loveable characters then look no further 💓

Thank you so much to the author for gifting me this book - what an amazing debut!

I Can Fix That by Juliana Smith
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Rom-Com
Grumpy/Sunshine

It's hard to put how I feel about this one into words. It's sweet, funny, and heartbreaking all at the same time. Grant gives the kind of gestures that every woman deserves. His soul is so pure and soft. No matter what the outside looks like. June is a ray of hope in Grant's life, even if he doesn't think he can change his mindset. She is gorgeous, funny, easygoing, so purely sweet, and let's not forget about her patience and understanding!!!! 😳 The cheerful girl that knows what she wants and is finally ready to take the lead and not be pushed aside. The grumpy guy who can't resist what is right in front of him and willing to do what he needs to do to be better for them together. 😭

So so good. Do not settle for anything less than what you all deserve. There are people out there who will give you the world if they could!

PS: I too married a grumpy man who does all of my handyman things 😉
