An opposites-attract, ice queen lesbian romance about finding the softest of hearts behind the highest walls. Newly minted high school teacher Lily Cross is young, bubbly, and can’t wait to put her fresh ideas into practice in the classroom. Her excitement is derailed after a disastrous run-in with a colleague. Lily didn’t realize she’d have to win over her fellow teachers as well as her students, but that’s okay. Lily’s up to the challenge. Disillusioned Eva Thomas never imagined she’d wind up as a teacher in her hometown, or worse, suffer the boundless, puppy dog enthusiasm of a new colleague. Eva has no interest in making friends—or making nice. She just wants to survive her day and be left alone. That’s easier said than done when Lily Cross has you in her sights. Their clashing arguments lead to sparks and then the impossible…attraction. But how can two such different people ever work?

Rachael Sommers was born and raised in the North-West of England, where she began writing at the age of thirteen, and has been unable to stop since. A biology graduate, she currently works in education and constantly dreams of travelling the world. In her spare time, she enjoys horse riding, board games, escape rooms and, of, course, reading.

Delightful read! A very nice story. Highly recommended!
I thought there was a chance I wouldn't like this given how I wasn't entirely blown away by Rachael Sommer's previous books (I've read two of them). But who was I kidding? I'm a sucker for ice queen and workplace romances and this one was great!
I connected with this story easily. There's definitely chemistry and a lot of sexual tension between the two high school science teachers and I loved the back and forth between them. Eva is a hard shell to crack and I love that Sommers never compromised on Eva's ice queen and impenetrable personality and yet still managed to create opportunities for Lily to penetrate Eva's defences.
A good story for fans of the ice queen, workplace romance trope!

Dr. Eva Thomas, formerly a Georgetown professor of biology, is back in her hometown teaching high school science classes. She is the most feared teacher at the school by both students and faculty. Eva does not suffer fools gladly. Her no nonsense demeanour keeps everyone far, far away from her, just as she likes it.
Lily Cross is a newly minted chemistry teacher with energy and ideas to spare. Although her first meeting with Eva was less than auspicious, Lily is determined to get along with all her coworkers.
Chemistry is a beautifully written romance which will make you believe in the attraction of opposites. Sommers did a splendid job creating such compelling and contrary characters. The heat rolls off the pages as the attraction grows between Eva and Lily with their battle of words. When the inevitable does happen, you will long remember the raw passion of the balcony scene.
There is an abundance of perfection spread throughout this novel. The description of a teacher’s life and workload is on point. As well, the high school students are authentically represented. The dialogue, both texted and spoken is both humorous and cantankerous to the absolute perfect proportion.
Wether a fan of the sciences in high school or not, I am positive you will become a die hard fan of this course on Chemistry taught by Rachael Sommers.
I received an advance review copy from Ylva Publishing and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I love this author’s writing style but so disappointed with the lack of steam!
✅ Great characters ✅ Ice Queen ✅ Chemistry and banter ✅ Opposites attract
I think I had similar opinions of Never Say Never. Just one good sex scene towards the end, once they were together, would have put both of these books on my favorites shelf.
I do adore ice queens and the beautiful, strong women who can melt their hearts. If you love novels that have this trope, then you are going to be enchanted with Chemistry by Rachael Sommers.
This is a contemporary romance set mostly in a high school in a suburban town near Chicago. First year teacher Lily Cross is here to teach biology when she meets fellow chemistry teacher Dr. Eva Thomas. Lily knew that as a new teacher she would have to work hard to win over her students in class. She had no idea until she met Eva that she would have to work even harder to win over her fellow science teacher. There is friction as well as (ahem) chemistry between the two immediately, and we all know what can happen when friction and certain elements of chemistry combine. Let’s just say the reaction can be explosive in many ways.
This is a superbly written enemies-to-lovers romance with engaging characters, both main and secondary. The setting is very realistic, especially the classroom scenes. Really, the overall teaching experience written about here is spot on for this age group and the area the school is set in. Eva is a true ice queen, intelligent, beautiful and dedicated to her work and students, but at the same time aloof, withdrawn, prickly and downright rude to those around her, especially Lily.
Lily is the perfect foil for Eva’s character. She is equally beautiful, intelligent and dedicated, but she has that fresh, “I can meet this challenge” attitude about her that makes her a great teacher. At the same time, it grates on Eva’s last nerve. This creates the ultimate scenario for a slowly melting ice queen.
The author did a fabulous job creating the characters, the setting, and the amazing love story of these two people. I enjoyed every page in this story, and didn’t want it to end. I was that engaged with the tale and the characters. I know you will feel the same when you read this novel. It has my highest recommendation.

3.5* rounded up This story is not particularly original but it's well written and enjoyable enough to curl up on the couch with. All the angst and going back and forth was a bit annoying towards the end which felt a little rushed. I wanted more conversations between the two MC's regarding their insecurities, past relationships and the fear and pain they had caused.
I didn't expect to love this book as much as I did, but woah! I loved this book. Eva is an exceptional ice queen and one of the best I've read in a while. My favourite thing about the ice queen trope is the prickly exterior and the thawing of the ice queen when they meet the right person. This played out expertly between Eva and Lily. It was an absolute joy to read ❤️
I really liked the storyline too. Lily and Eva both work at the same school, with very different personal circumstances. They both felt so well-rounded and I loved getting to know them individually but also as a pair.
A must read for those who love sapphic lit. I now plan to read anything else written by Rachael Sommers!
Many thanks to Ylva Publishing for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
Lily Cross has returned home to the suburbs on Chicago for her first teaching job. She isn't overly thrilled to come home but there were reasons she needed to get out of Miami. She is determined to become friends with her new co-workers but she hadn't planned on Dr. Eva Thomas.
Eva had been a Chemistry professor at Georgetown University, but a family situation brings her home. Teaching high school had never been something she imagined herself doing and she doesn't have the time nor the inclination to humor the new, ridiculously peppy Biology teacher. She infuriated Eva or is that feeling something more troublesome?
I gravitate to ice queens. They are so complex and keep so much of themselves hidden away and fear is usually the cause. Eva is no exception. When Lily gets a glimpse into who Eva is with her students, she begins to see that the icy exterior is just that, a way to keep people at bay and protect herself.
The title of the book is apropos. Eva and Lily have incredible chemistry. They balance each other out as happens in the best ice queen romances. I finished this is an evening because I wanted to witness Lily cracking the ice Eva had around her heart and I was not disappointed. This is a wonderful book to curl up with on the couch with a glass of wine.

The third book I've read by the author and her writing has steadily improved. Back in the day, I literally dreaded any science class in high school except for the allure of the bunsen burners (don't ask). Thank goodness time has passed, science class with any of the two leads in this romance would be interesting. Lily full of excitement has returned home after years away - ink fresh on her credentials and looking forward to teaching high school chemistry. Eva, biology teacher tough and jaded with a frosty facade she just wants to get through her daily teaching schedule then leave the building. Her mom has MS and she returned to Chicago to look after her. Their teaching styles are so different yet nurturing. Both women have hidden hurts and their attraction grows slowly with lots of emotional back and forth and sass. Well fleshed out supporting characters, student interactions and back story add nicely to the storyline and I happily read without pause to the end. Great job Ms. Sommers.
I rec'd a copy through Ylva Publishing and this is an unbiased, voluntary review.
What a wonderful treat! This has everything I love in a romance. Brainy, sexy main characters, an ice queen, an extremely likable melter of said ice queen, it’s well written, has fun moments, some sexy times and I couldn’t put it down! There isn’t a thing I didn’t like about it. Finished it in one sitting. Highly recommend it and want more from this author! Bring on the audiobook!

What’s not to love about a good ice queen? And Eva definitely is one of those, although I would rather describe her as a very prickly cactus, especially around Lily.
With a workplace romance there is always I chance I won’t like it because of the power dynamics, nothing wrong with those in this book. The banter between these high school science teachers is absolutely amazing. All of their interactions are fun and laced with tension, it’s very well done. Lily is a bit of sunshine-y character and Eva remains very icy and prickly throughout the book. Lily just never backs down from this person impersonating a cactus and sees right through her. It’s good fun to see her poke through the icy walls, but Eva not melting at all.
This was my first book by this author and it has piqued my interest enough to want to see what else they have out there.
Id recommend this book to anyone interested in workplace romance, ice queens and good banter.
There are so many ice-queen and opposites-attract tropes in wlw romance already. But let me tell you, this is a nice one!!
This is my first Rachael Sommers book. Her written style is excellent. The ending seems a bit too rushed, but overall, I really enjoyed it. It’s a perfect summer read.
3.5 ⭐️ Enjoyable read, but let’s talk about the cover, it doesn’t fit a book like this, it fit a book children, the character can be childish sometimes but still 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
I love this trope; not sure what it's called so I'll go with 'know each other IRL and are begrudgingly attracted but also annoyed while simultaneously secretly - and unknowingly - talking online and smitten AF' (I'm great at the whole concise naming of things, I know. It's a skill I cherish). So many fun situations and misunderstandings that leave the reader in the know and snickering and cheering the MCs on - pretty much the same reason I love the fake dating trope so much.
4.5 - This is my first Sommers book and I can definitely say I was impressed with the character depth and development so I'll absolutely be checking out more of her work. I also thought she did a great job with the chemistry between the MCs (and with a book title like that, you damn well better write some good chemistry). The endearing enemies-to-lovers, ice queen, grumpy-sunshine aspects were all quite well done and the pacing was excellent.
It was really sweet, really heartfelt, and sufficiently steamy as well. The hurdles, situations, and interactions all felt very realistic, too, which gave the book and overall down-to-earth feel for me in the best way.
Definitely go with the audio version, Lori Prince voiced all of the characters so well.
I’ve been saving this book as a treat for myself and it was! I enjoyed this ice-queen enemies-to-lovers romance.
Eva is icy and intensely private. Lily is her polar opposite, bubbly, inquisitive, talkative, awkward and a real sweetheart. Their relationship is rocky and antagonistic from the start. Eva especially throws barbs and holds Lily at arms length for a long time.
Sparks fly, mistakes are made, sisters and best friends demand to know all the “details” and angsty silences last for weeks on end.
The intimate scenes are spicy, the conversations interesting and the banter fun and fast. I found the story somewhat formulaic, but I enjoyed it a lot. The sub-plots involving students didn’t overpower the main romance, and it is interesting to see how the dynamic changes between Eva and Lily.
Overall, a satisfying, smooth read that doesn’t venture too far from the beaten path but is a good ride nonetheless.
What a wonderful surprise. I somehow missed this one back in 2022 but somebody recently mentioned it so I picked up the audiobook. The story features an “ice queen” but I didn’t see her that way. Dr. Eva Thomas is standoffish with the other teachers at the high school and so has that b reputation. But her biggest tell is how devoted she is to her students and family. She has a big heart if anyone bothers to look. When the new sweetheart of a teacher, Lily Cross, comes into the picture, life changes for both of them. The characters are well rounded and full of personality. Loved the banter between them and the heat. Sexy Stem teachers. Yes! Just enough angst but still plenty of tenderness too. I also enjoyed the humor. Lori Prince does a great job at narrating this gem. Top notch book.
I wanted to read an enemies to lovers novel with a lot of banter, back and forths, and feisty characters and Chemistry by Rachael Sommers didn't disappoint! It was everything I was looking for.
I am on a sort of break from writing reviews (my head is somewherelse in this period), but I wanted to say how much I loved reading this book. It did exactly what I needed: forget reality for a while and let my brain get lost in an entertaining romance.
I chuckled a couple of times, loved the sparring with words.
Love a good ice queen and this book had a great one. The tension between the MCs was so strong the moment they even got close to each other you could feel that chemistry (no pun intended). The science theme was super well done and the little details like Lily’s username, so good. Really enjoyed this book and I wasn’t ready for it to end. I would’ve loved a couple more chapters.
The chemistry was just right. The characters were likeable and very ‘opposites attract’. The plot was entertaining with a nice little texting twist. So you can see, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
If you love the ice-queen trope and love the plucky girl who melts said ice queen’s heart—and especially if you enjoy said plucky girl working very hard to do so—then Rachael Sommers’ Chemistry is a book you’re going to enjoy, I’m very confident in saying. High-school teacher Eva Thomas is literally bumped into by new teacher Lily Cross. You might then expect some sort of spark that leads to the chemistry, but if so, you might be surprised to find that what is mostly prevalent is animosity, at least on Eva’s part. For her part, Lily can’t quite believe why Eva would be so hostile and cold, and she thus determines that she simply needs to be nice, friendly, and helpful so as to befriend Eva. To Eva’s chagrin, of course fate determines that she and Lily will be thrown together, such as after-school clubs, school dances, and such. Ms. Sommers has written a really engaging enemies-to-lovers story with compelling leads. Eva is a real ice queen—smart and gorgeous, but cold and distracted (and distracting!)—who is committed to her mother (in her ill-health), career, and students, with whom she can be strict but with whom she also shows her compassionate side. No prizes for guessing that Lily will likely witness both on occasion, which leads her to being more determined to take on the icy challenge.
However, really that’s all the decoration and what you would expect in a book such as this. The fantastic twist is that the girls will meet anonymously on a dating app, and that is how they will get to know each other behind the façade of roles and real life. Readers get to predict when the girls might find out about the truth of the situation and how the consequences will play out. The author teases us well, let me tell you!
The characters, the atmosphere, and the burgeoning relationship between the two girls are brilliantly crafted by the Rachel Sommers. With neatly crafted and flowing prose, the narrative was enjoyable from beginning to end. So much so that I would love the sequel.
Highly recommended. Oh, and I loved the cover!
Many thanks to the author, to Ylva Publishing, and to NetGalley for this ARC, which I was delighted to find, given that the book has been out for some time.
Eva could be the poster woman for Ice Queen. She’s brilliant, beautiful, and seems to be unattainable.
Until She runs into Lily…literally. The new chemistry teacher is kind, sweet, and the polar opposite of the prickly biology teacher.
I’ll admit I’m not usually a fan of this trope, but I enjoyed how Lily held her own. Lots of will-they, won’t-they back and forth, but still a great read.
This was an entertaining read. Great chemistry! Eva's character was so well developed.. One of the best Ice Queens I've read lately.
Despite that the sense of humor or banters between the characters were not the type that steal a smile from me, I really liked the the interaction between characters.
The book was enjoyable and the science environment was refreshing.
4.25 stars This book was a lot of fun. Enemies to lovers And lots chattering back and forth between the MCs via email. I throughly enjoyed it. Yeah for chemistry between women.
Audiobook for the win! I was pretty stoked to see this in my library, though admit I haven't had the best luck with this narrator. However the issues I have had with other works didn't come through in this, and I quite enjoyed the story. MC Eva, former Georgetown professor, now a high school teacher, is ice queen SUH-PREME. She was certainly a tough nut to crack, but guess who managed it? Uh huh, MC Lily, the new chem teacher. Eventually. There are many bumps along the way, but I found the story engaging. Good times. 4.25/5.
