Virtuous Sinners is a collection of gay romance stories that center on killers who are guided by a virtuous code. These dark novels are connected only by theme and can be read standalone.
The killer's virtue in Speak and Obey is obedience.
I spend most of my days writing, editing, and perfecting the craft of storytelling.
A note to readers: I don't hang out on Goodreads or social media, so if you have any questions about my books, please check out my website, which I host with M.D. Gregory.
this is the sort of shit people wished darkness looked like. serial killers killing only "bad people" is as laughable as it gets. also just a fact, people can have ASPD and not have an appetite for killing but they sure as hell do NOT possess a moral compass either way.
and the logic that bad people would not be missed if they suddenly disappeared😭. last time I checked having family is not selective to good people.
We are used to one person being the killer and a bit off in dark romance, but usually the other person does not agree but loves the other enough to accept it.
Not in this one.
Slight spoilers ahead.
In this one we have two off people who find each other and just know that they are the same. Same meaning different from other humans. One likes to kill and cannot hide his emotionless self and one who wants to kill but has learned to pass. Together they become a perfect couple.
So we have Ari, a triplet who shows up one day after killing a predator. And Jules, a cop who liked what Ari did. After some light stalking by both parties, they end up together.
There is a storyline about killing those who got away with bad things and one about underground fights where you can kill your opponent.
I actually liked both mcs in this. Though the repetitive paragraphs about how each one didn't feel emotions like normal people. I mean, this was repeated a lot. Outside of that this was great. While people from the other series show up, you do not need to read then before reading this.
Hi! Thank you all for visiting New Gothenburg again! Speak and Obey is in the Virtuous Sinners series, which was supposed to be un-numbered, but thanks to how Amazon works, the book is listed as number one. There really is no number one in the series because all the books are by amazing authors, and they are all stand-alone novels.
A Very Important Note! Please Do Not Skip! This book has serial killers in it. You should expect all the types of things that come with serial killers, including blood, guts, and dead people. There is also love, true love, and obsession, and two people finding their one in a million perfect other half. BUT PLEASE DON'T FOREGET THAT THEY ARE ALSO SERIAL KILLERS.
Thank you for reading the note and as always, thank you for reading books in New Gothenburg!
This was a pretty solid entry for the series theme. I liked having the dual killers arc, with one more in control than the other through experience. They had excellent possessiveness as well, plus a love of pain that worked super well with their personalities.
There was a weird scene in the middle that I think was just a massive cameo of couples, because they never showed up again and I have no idea who they were. That was a bit annoying.
It dragged a little for me in the middle area, but not too terribly. I have some trouble connecting with the writing this duo does, so I think that one may be on me and ymmv. I did very much enjoy the first half especially.
Overall, this was definitely one of the better ones in the series so far. It stays dark without getting edgelordy which is also a major plus.
The good + Mutual obsession + Jules' appreciation of Ari's art + Jules teaching Ari about blending in + Ari obeying Jules + The slight fear and extreme thrill they got from the threat of getting killed by the other + Weirdly romantic for guys who don't know what love is + Killing as a romantic gesture + Cooperative murder as a date
The neutral o The rough sex fit, but the anal fissure was maybe a bit too much
The bad - Ari and Jules were not very careful or covert about everything. I had expected better, and it makes no sense that they haven't been caught yet - The visit with Jules' work partner was weird and didn't add anything to the story. It seemed like an excuse to add a bunch of cameos without substance
Quotes x He was mine. I would claim him, and no one else could touch him or I'd cut off their hands. x "You're talented and fearless and free. Your face is pretty and your body is sexy, but your soul is perfection." x I'd never felt love, but the sensation popping like champagne bubbles in my chest was good, and I liked it. x Everything that belonged to Jules now belonged to me, he just didn't know it yet. x "I don't know anything about love, but I want to cut out Derek Uhlig's heart and feed it to him for touching you. Does that count?"
This book delivered what was promised. The mutual obsession was great, and Ari obeying Jules' directions for murder was perfect. Way more romantic than I had anticipated. Would recommend.
While I found this romance enjoyable, I had a hard time connecting emotionally, especially to Jules. I very much liked the obsession and the possessiveness between him and Ari, but I wasn't invested in the way I wanted to be. Granted, both our leads are psychopaths and are emotionally detached themselves, but I prefer other psychopath romances I've read, specifically the Necessary Evils series. I think it helps that in that series there are plenty of dynamic characters surrounding, and loving, the Mulvaneys, whereas here Ari and Jules exist in their own isolated world together. I also felt here that the ending was a bit abrupt. Overall, it was a pretty sexy read, but I wanted a bit more.
This was a really unique story. Two psychos falling for eachother in a very non conventional way. A cop with psycho tendencies and feelings called Jules and his little killer psycho Ari.
I love how Ari was written, absolutely no feelings and really struggling to learn how to act “normal” in society but he learns well off Jules.
They have a raw and aggressive sexual chemistry with a lot of pain infliction. They are obsessive and possessive of eachother. All I can say is it is their own unique version of love.
Plot was ok, did find their interactions fascinating as they could be themselves around eachother without the mask of “normal”. Enjoyable dark read.
I don't even know where to begin on this review 😮💨
I really struggled to make myself finish this book and almost DNFed multiple times.
I really disliked the characters and their relationship (especially Ari, he was unsufferable).
I am aware that dark romances romanticise killers and psychopaths and all those things that we woud never want irl, so authors need to find a way to make them palatable and interesting without crossing the line.
This book managed to make them both unlikable AND cringey 🤦♀️ Ari acted like he was a spoiled teen with zero impulse control, which he was, but it made it completely unbelievable that he hadn't been caught yet!
I was waiting at any second for them to either kill each other or get caught, so when we got the HEA with family reunion at the end and Ari being all like "can't wait to start college to become a lawyer" I was like...😐
Welp, tl:dr I didn't like any of it, except maybe the beginning chapters and would not recommend to most people.
Also there's nothing "virtuous" about these "sinners", they act like they want to punish awful people but they would literally kill anyone without a thought if they were in a bad mood so not much of a moral code either.
Narrator: Keval Shah (Didn't enjoy the narration style that much either :/)

Hold on to your bootstraps, babies, because this is not your garden variety smooshy romance! This book is a rollercoaster ride on the darkside and I am freaking obsessed with it!
Jules is a respected cop who hides his true nature behind a facade of smiles and social niceties. He manages to keep his fascination for the bloodier, more violent part of his work, in check until he spots a pretty face at his latest murder scene - a face who's eyes mirror the darkness in his own. Ari knows he's not like most people. His previous therapists labeled him as a psychopath, but Ari prefers to think of himself as the hand of Karma. Metting out justice to those who are truly evil and deserving of his brand of retribution. Crossing paths with Jules gives Ari something he's never had before - a Master - someone who not only understands the dark cravings he is filled with, but someone who can help steer him to those who deserve to be punished. Someone who understands the complexities of fitting in with "normal" society, and can help him avoid being caught. As Jules and Ari become more and more obsessed with each other, they discover that two psychopaths might just be able to redefine what love is and find in each other what they've been missing all their lives! New Gothenburg has a new killing couple and the guilty are going to fall before the power of their unique love!
This story is dark and gritty but utterly beautiful in the way that it portrays these two unique souls. Not many authors can take completely remorseless characters and make you fall in love with them, but I'll be danged if Ki Brightly and MD Gregory haven't done just that! Ari is a whirlwind of chaotic, killing energy wrapped up in an angel's face and I absolutely love him! This is one of those books that just grabs you and sucks you in - hard - and I hung on every single word! To simply say that I recommend this is not doing it nearly the justice it deserves but there it is! Read this! There are a lot of dark themes, so do heed the warnings, but despite those this is one of the best books I've read in a while! A masterpiece of dark, obsessive love and murder! 10/10* stars
Jules and Ari are two Psychopaths deigned to live in the world pretending they are just like everyone else... Well, Jules does anyway. Ari is a law to oneself and see's people as a commodity to his needs.
Arriving on scene to a grizzly and brutal murder Officer Rogers, AKA Jules is fascinated by the young killer he meets hiding in the shadows of his work. After seeing himself reflected in the vacant emotionless eyes of Ari. Jules cannot walk away from Ari and his magnetism and vows to teach him the ropes of social normalities. Whilst extracting all the predators and filth from Gothenburg.
Speak & Obey is a dark, twisted and seriously hot romance, emphasis on the dark and twisted!! Ari and Jules made a team that you definitely wouldn't want to meet in real life, but let's face it makes for an entertaining read! These two are violent and not just with their victims, Jules is brutal in all his dominating glory. I absolutely love the virtuous Sinners series so far. I highly recommend this book for all the dark smut readers who love morally grey characters and straight up abhorrent gestures of love.
“It was nice to know I wasn’t the only one like me, the only one pretending to be normal.”-Jules
This was one crazy ride we took with Jules and Ari. Every single time I thought one had reached the pinnacle of insane, they upped the ante. I loved that this book did not balk at the darkness and grisly aspects of serial killer psychopaths. We get all of the gory details so be sure to heed your trigger warnings.
There were elements of obsession and vengeance woven all through this book and it fit in so seamlessly with their personalities. Jules couldn’t even figure out why he was so taken with Ari the second he saw him, but the need to be near him just grew and grew. And Ari, the submissive little baby psycho, was just taken right under Jules wing and shown how to pretend better. They complimented each other so well and were both written so beautifully. They also burned up the pages with their chemistry and I was so down for it. All the rough and raw between them couldn’t be matched. Jules was so rough with Ari at times that it made me wince, but Ari just ate it right up.
MD Gregory and Ki Brightly know how to do dark right and this is the perfect example. I loved Jules and Ari at every dark and devious turn. Definitely recommended.
Ari and Jules. WELL WOW. I had to wait two days after I finished this book before I felt like I had digested it enough to be able to talk about it. To sum it up I think it’s incredible. Be sure you read the blurb and realize what type of story this is because it’s very much what it says it is. What type of things I read really depends on my mood at the time and this really satisfied my mood and actually made me happier. I have no idea why? I guess it’s similar to why people ride roller coasters to experience a safe thrill and this book supplies abundant thrills. This story has so many ups and downs and unexpected twists that you really need to just sit back and enjoy them all. I haven’t read anything written by these two authors that hasn’t go right on my ‘ read this once a year list’. As long as you read the blurb and know what you are getting into then I highly recommend this book to you. Enjoy
The minute Jules spotted Ari I just knew he was going to have to have him! Who knew a crime scene could start a romance? Ari is young and has been committing his own killings of bad people but really does deep down want someone to relate to him and guide him. Jules was definitely his perfect fit in all aspects. They both have this dark side of murder obsession, but I could not help routing for them because they were kind of like really dark avenging angels! Their chemistry was smoking hot but mixed with a side of sweet. They were possessive of each other and even though their relationship was strong they did not suddenly change who they actually were. Their desires grew stronger with each other. They built their own dark little world together! It was actually a fascinating read that I could not put down!
This is part of a series of dark books by multiple authors and I loved it. I already love these author's then add in some serial killer psychopaths and you have a great mix that anyone would want to read (or maybe just us weird ones). It is very dark so if you aren't into that you won't like the book, but I say give it a try because it's just that good.
Ummm...this book was amazing and I could not put it down. I was instantly drawn to Aramis 'Ari' Radford, a wandering serial killer, who manages to end up in New Gothenburg. After committing a murder, he meets Officer Jules Rogers. Jules recognizes the predator in Ari and warns him to leave New Gothenburg afraid it will upset the balance he has managed to make there. He has perfected his facade and doesn't want anything to ruin that.
However, both predators realize that there will never be a more perfect match for them. The relationship that develops between these two is hot, bloody, and oddly romantic for a pair of killers. I have always adored a possessive love story and this did not let me down. There is no doubt that these two will stay together because they actually bring out the best in each other. Jules is able to focus Ari's reckless killing tendencies so that he won't get caught. While Ari lets Jules actually give in to his darker fantasies. They just work.
As with all of Ki and M.D.'s works, we are introduced to interesting side characters who I am very curious about. Poor Tyler deserves someone to protect him and take care of him. I hope we see a story about him very soon. Also, Ari is a triplet who is very different from his brothers (Beach and Sparrow). We only met them briefly, but I am wondering if we will see them in the future. It could be really interesting to see how their personalities are different from Ari's. He is the only killer psychopath among them, so I am guessing there would be slight differences. :)
Again, I am in just in awe of the world that these two amazing authors are able to create. How can they write these books that just seamlessly fit into the New Gothenburg world? I love this world and just imagine all of these characters running around together. I cannot wait to see more of Ari and Jules in Derek Uhlig's book at least. Might we also see Fallon and Ari fight at some point? It's definitely a possibility, but I don't want either of them injured. **Panic**
**I received an ARC from the author for my honest review**
I have enjoyed “psychopaths finding their person and falling in their version of love” books by a few others authors, but in all of those cases, it was a person without empathy connecting in their own way with someone without psychopathy. Brightly and Gregory up the ante in this book by putting TWO characters with similar psychopathies together and calling it a dark romance.
It’s definitely dark, considering one character actively delights in bloodshed and the other is only slightly more low-key about it. However, because of these character POVs, the darker aspects of this book are not glossed over so much as presented in a different light. The violence is always “deserved,” and the story and characters presented here fit very well in both this particular collection and the authors’ larger shared world in which they’ve set this book.
Ari and Jules share a connection, but I hesitate to call it a romance. It’s a connection on a more visceral level, with like attracting like. A different sort of power exchange accompanies the relationship that develops between them. There’s nothing safe or sane about what these men do together, and the consent exists because either could turn on the other at any time.
But they don’t want to, and they instead actively work toward building a life together. That’s romantic enough for me. I kept waiting for something a bit bigger to happen for a finale, relating to Ari’s actions in the city, his family, or Jules’ profession. Instead, the ending kind of snuck up on me, with them settling into their new normal. I’m curious whether this pair will show up in future New Gothenberg books and how Brightly and Gregory’s other familiar characters deal with it if they ever learn the truth.
This story was a total surprise to me being by this author. It is more on the dark side. I enjoyed the story and hard to believe but a number of times I laughed at the sassy things that came from Ari. I also had to laugh at Jules who put up and enjoyed Ari. These two are both psychopaths. The spin comes when they are developing a relationship. Even though for the most part Jules is the dominate personality, Ari is no sissy. I found it entertaining how both are more than a little jealous and have no problem threatening anything that they perceive as someone just flirting with the other. I think the author did a great job of character development. I got a real feel for these two and believe me I wouldn’t want to be on either’s bad side. I liked the way Jules learned behavior was explained and how Jules feared for Ari’s behavior. The only part I didn’t like I felt it ended to abruptly. I never felt that these two covered all their bases and wondered if either got caught. Maybe that will be answered in a later story in this series. I hope I get a chance to read more dark stories from this author.
This book follows the story of a serial killer and the police officer who appreciates the killer's work. I've never felt that I would be able to get into the head of someone who sees justice and vengeance as so simple and so beautiful. Keep your head about you because this was written in such a way that you will find yourself enveloped in the story with no way out and no desire to escape.
The love story is brutal and hot and I didn't want to put this book down. When I did, it was only to catch my breath. And declaration of feelings between people who struggle with emotion to the point they don't care about feeling anything beyond what they want to? Oh wow... I just can't say enough about this book. I love these authors, but this felt so different from the other things they've done. Not better or worse, but different. I can't wait to see what other talents are going to be revealed as more of the New Gothenburg universe is explored.

This is a part of the Virtuous Sinners series by various authors, and is only connected by the theme of killers who live by a code.
It is also set in the New Gothenburg universe created by Ki Brightly and M.D. Gregory, and contains several cameos.
This book is about a psychopath who passes as "normal", Jules, who meets a younger psychopath, Ari, who hasn't learned how to emulate "normality".
Think if Dexter met a younger version of himself without Harry's code.
Jules, and Ari are actually very sweet together from a place of toxic co-dependancy. Jules feels things with Ari for the very first time similar to how a "normal" person would feel about love, and vice versa for Ari. It comes from a very primitive, and instinctual place from them though, so everything is felt to the 100th power.
I would definitely have liked to see a little more behind the scenes of the investigations surrounding Ari's artwork, but the flow doesn't suffer at all for the minimal details.
I would love to see a mini series of this couple, or even a run-in with the Undertaker.
I read this hoping it would be similar to the Hannigram fics that I enjoy but it fell short in every way. Plot points were set up and never resolved. Characters were introduced who had zero impact on the story. I didn't like either of the main characters, and they behaved in ways that made no sense to how they were introduced. Like, Jules has always maintained he'd never give in to his urges but 5 seconds after he meets Ari, he's ready to kill. Also, he's a cop. He admits that he's being reckless using his phone to search for information on people, etc. but does it anyway despite having the skill set to cover his tracks. Not that it matters anyway because it never figures into the plot of the story. Tbh there really isn't a story to be found here. There was no tension or conflict to resolve. The darkness wasn't dark enough and the sex scenes just didn't do anything for me, they felt very by the numbers. I wanted to enjoy it, but it was just bad.
This book is exactly what it says in the blurb. Gritty, gruesome and dark. It’s part of a multi author series but is standalone in that and is actually set in the New Gothenburg world that belongs to these two authors. As a result we get some cameo appearances from some much loved characters. This can be read as a standalone though. This one was a bit different in that bath characters were morally grey - usually you get one paired up with an innocent. It added an interesting element and an extra level of danger as you didn’t know if or when one would hurt the other especially in the proverbial bedroom. The love element ends up happy but their lifestyle can’t be sustained can it? Would be good to see them in a cameo role in the future to see what they get up to next.

An interesting take on the murder-with-a-cause genre. Some reviewers say they're better than Mulvaney & Co but I disagree. These guys were SLOPPY. Which was especially disappointing since one of them is a fucking police offer. LMAO.
I was poised to like this because I love vigilantes who do their homework. And because I think the justice system the world over (literally) is shit so I love to see evil people get their due. But I didn't like this as much as I'd hoped to. The writing was at times repetitive + abrupt.
Still, others might enjoy this.
What to expect: two killers with no empathy, really violent sex (I had to skip all but one sex scene), lots of violent jealousy, some interesting & unconventional perspectives.
Really enjoyed the first title of the series; probably won't continue with it. It reminds me of the TV show that you enjoy in the first season but then the network started bitching about it not having enough sex and blood in it to provide higher ratings. There was some scenes I didn't understand why they were necessary (well I understand why they were necessary again ratings but I'm not concerned with ratings are more concerned with continuity!) And the last two scenes of the book to me were completely unnecessary and ended way earlier.
Also I am placing it that end of my new reviews AMAZON GET OFF THE COUCH STOP BEING LAZY and put URLs connecting to the website in your Kindle app! I understand I can't pay through there but you can't direct me to the book in your app!
This book is part of the multi author Virtuous Sinners series and is set in the New Gothenburg world. Ari is a young psychopath who has been wandering around the country killing and ends up in NG where Jules, a cop, spots him at a recent murder crime scene. Jules is instantly attracted to Ari and realizes that they are both psychopaths. Jules becomes Ari's Master and helps him with his penchant to kill. Together they plan and plot to take out the bad guys while slowly falling into their own brand of love. They can't get enough of each other and their sex is kinky, dangerous, and hot. I absolutely loved this book and will continue with the series and can't wait to get back to the author's many NG series as I'm so far behind.
This book is a dark and intriguing read. The subject matter is not for everyone but if anyone could turn these kinds of men into what you could call a loving couple, I knew these authors could. Jules and Ari a good together and the ride we go on with them is crazy. The more time I spent with Jules and Ari the more I loved them. Jules understands the game that must be played if they want to continue to be safe and I enjoyed watching him ground Ari and teach him. Their story is a twisted tale, but I expect no less from M.D. Gregory and Ki Brightly and I eagerly gobbled it up and still wanted more.

Nobody does dark and twisted as good as these ladies do and this book is definitely that. I was happily surprised this book was about Officer Jules that we have met in a lot of previous books. We have Officer Jules and Ari who meet at a crime scene and recognize each other as not normal. They get involved with each other pretty quickly and have amazing chemistry. I loved how possessive they both were of each other. The story gets pretty dark and full of gore, but I loved it. It's refreshing to read something that's different from smooshy romance. I think the MCs were really sweet to each other, but only to each other. I would highly recommend this book and this whole world!!
