When it comes to fate, where is the line between being predestined and being condemned?

Merriam was born a regular girl in a mundane world. Mollian is a fae prince whose family is charged with guarding the Gate that binds every existence together. Both of their lives were forever changed when they met in the woods as children, sparking a bond in their souls deeper than either of them understood.

Now an adult, Merriam has spent the last seven years securing her place in the magical realm Mollian calls home. She has built a reputation as a formidable mercenary, working to prove her merit outside of her friendship with the second-born prince and navigating her ever-growing feelings for his older brother. When a pattern of strange disappearances and gruesome murders appears, she and the mercenaries she runs with are hired by the Crown to hunt down and eradicate those responsible.

But as it becomes evident that the darkness they’re chasing is not of this realm, what starts as a routine job becomes a fight for survival and a mission to protect the powerful magic that resides within their world.

Content Information: Leaves May Fall is an epic dark fantasy that contains depictions of violence, murder, strong language, sex, and drug and alcohol use.

Plot : 5/5
Characters : 5/5
Writing style : 5/5
Overall rating : 4.5/5

I took out 0.5 stars because author killed off one of my favorite characters and it made me cry which later give me a headache that lasted for hours.

This book was extremely captivating. It hits every point: magic, romance, heart break, tragedy, a lot of loss, enemies to friends, playful banter and tons of action. I was hooked and couldn't set it down. I highly recommend this book. It doesn't end in a cliffhanger, although it does hint that there will be more to come. I'm eagerly waiting for the sequel to learn what would happen with merri and molli.

For a 650 page book, it felt like not a lot happened, and yet it was a slog to get through. The first 70% was honestly pretty forgettable, there was a brief shining light of plot, and then somehow there was still 100 pages more of STUFF. Many plot points I thought would/should be saved for the second book ended up being touched on and resolved in the last 20%, which almost cheapened them.

If this was the second book in a trilogy, I think I'd have liked this a bit better because I'd (hopefully) have more context to care about these characters and their relationships. As it stands, thrusting me into this world and expecting me to connect with and care about these characters and their relationships when I mostly learn about them through short flashbacks didn't work for me. I thought all the relationships suffered as a result of not having proper build up or time to breath, which is not ideal when 95% of your book is about relationships.

I received an E-ARC of Leaves May Fall and this is my honest review after reading the book!

We are instantly introduced to Merriam and Mollian. I am in love with their relationship.

The use of character flaws as plot devices to move the character’s developments and the plot itself forward was both emotionally damaging and brilliant!

The side characters, if you may, were written with so much substance that made each of them stand out and were not just there for fluff.

Merriam’s mercenary family are the kind of people I want to be around! They are so kind, fun, and accepting.

The rangers represented what it is like to be commanded by toxic leadership,

Intertwining the magical world of Nethyl and other realms with the modern realm of earth were done very well and did not leave any room for plot holes.

Overall, I loved reading Leaves May Fall and I can’t wait for the second book! Congratulations, Carissa on your debut!

Getting an ARC of this book was so exciting and I am so HYPE that it lived up to all my expectations!

The set of characters was so authentic and varied, and the omniscient story telling was actually wildly refreshing. It gave enough internal insights to the characters to really understand them, but without tons of heavy internal monologue from anyone. Amazing! And it allowed for multiple POVs in some scenes where it was eye opening to see the dynamic of the characters with each other from both sides.

I definitely cried MANY tears, so that was super fun but heartbreaking.

Overall, great pace, lots of twists and turns, but I think the characters and dialogue are really what made me love the book and got me invested in the story!

In terms of similar vibes: I would say Bridge Kingdom or Throne of Glass for sure

Let’s just start with this is the best book I’ve read in any genre to this day.

*stands up slow clapping*

Truly a work of art that had breadcrumbs from another one of my favs! Can we just, bow to the magnificence that is Leaves and Carissa Hardcastle. We start off with a destined friendship bound to more than either friend could ever imagine it could turn into. There’s found family, twice over. Falling in deep love, earth shattering heartbreak, and an unknown or ever seen force that is out to quite literally take everything from the FMC that’s she’s ever loved.

Merriam is an FMC that is more than a force to be reckoned with - cause she will literally end you. Just don’t get on her bad side! She loves deeply, is loyal without fault, and come on… she’s a mercenary that won’t think twice about throwing an axe at your neck. Her and Mollian’s friendship was deeper than a fated mates connection, yeah I know. I found such happiness in them, laughing at their banter that you could only have with your closest friend. Mollian is a true strength in Merriam’s life.

Without giving any spoilers AT ALL Oren is THE fictional man of all fictional men. Listen, if you have book boyfriends and husbands, this man is the ultimate man that is teaching all others! Just trust me on this!

Leaves May Fall has perfectly spaced events which allows you to fall into the world of Nethyl while not exactly knowing what the next chapter will be focusing on. You’re given back story, spice, current adventures, and unspoken words within different areas of the book. Again, the pacing gives you time to be tempted by the spicy scenes, mourn the hard parts, and understand the characters reasons through their personal back stories.

Carissa perfectly builds a world that feels so real you can smell the night sky and feel the moons light against your face while you take a walk through the trees. Because of this, every character feels deeply real for the reader. The pacing and sentence structure is a wet dream. Yeah, I said it and I won’t take it back. Cringe to your mama! I loathed one character so deeply that I am still quite angry that I loved him so much at the end. I’m still trying to sort through all the emotions that she put me through.

Overall, I have nothing but positive things to say about Carissa’s debut novel, Leaves May Fall. It was truly an incredible adventure and after the ending she gave us, I cannot wait to see what’s next!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Despite thoroughly enjoying this book, I was disappointed by so many aspects...not because they were terribly executed but because they prevented this book from being an easy 5 stars.

Focusing on the positives is easy as there were many: I was thoroughly captivated by the platonic soul-mate bond between two of the main characters. This was unique and heart-warming, and I was jealous of the love and devotion experienced between these two characters. The other secondary characters were equally entertaining with unique personalities and provided captivating banter throughout the novel. In fact, they were so intriguing that it was part of the reason I became frustrated at times...they were strong enough to be developed further and I was left wanting more from each scene (I'm looking at you Rovin, Kodi and Aleah).

The world building is also fantastic. I loved the concept of Traveling and Casting, and the inter-dimensional connections between worlds, and I am really looking forward to this being developed further in the next book. The action was both entertaining and graphic, especially the scenes with the mercenary troupe being some of my favourites. The FMC, Merriam, is especially hardcore and I loved her fight scenes.

I also loved the three MC's. Mollian was a delight and I loved every scene he is in, and has mentioned earlier, his bond with Merriam was one of the highlights of this book. I also came to love Oren as an individual, even if his character development deserved so much more.

Warning: the remaining part of this review will contain minor spoilers from later parts of the novel.

However, I was somewhat frustrated with the dynamic of the relationship between Merriam and Oren. mostly because I wanted so much more from them and for them. Oren, as Heir Apparent, showed so many signs of being a revered ruler, but most of his inner dialogue either revolved around his lusting/feelings for Merriam, or he was engaged in several sex scenes with Merriam. I would have loved to see more of what made him so respected by his subjects rather than simply his role as Merriam's doting lover, and it made his outcome feel like he was merely a catalyst for Merriam's character development, which is a shame because his character was so much more than that.

Oren was almost too perfect; he literally worshipped Merriam; offered her anything she wanted; was loved and respected by all his subjects; and was understanding of her bond with Mollian. He needed more contrast; another side to him that wasn't connected to Merriam. His perfection was also why I became frustrated with Merriam's refusal to claim the future King publicly despite his proposal to marry her and/or abdicate his throne for her, when her reasons for denying this just didn't feel realistic. We only ever hear her own fears with regards to claiming Oren, but we are never exposed to any other signs that she won't be accepted as Oren's Consort.

Their lack of development as a couple also ultimately made the many many spicy scenes become repetitive. Though I don't believe a book needs a "slow-burn", what this does provide is clear change and development of the relationship. This element was lacking since not much changes between the two characters. Though the spicy scenes were each really well-written, none of them really had any connection/influence/consequence to the plot (which is not a necessity) but this book sets up really great characters and an intriguing world, and repetitive spice scenes ultimately became a distraction from the rest of the story.

Lastly, some minor writing preferences threw off the pace at times. Switching POVs erratically did make it confusing to follow some scenes. Though I don't normally love contemporary language in a fantasy novel, it worked in this case, since the FMC is from Earth...and though it was jarring at times from the other characters, the dialogue was still fun and it wasn't as disruptive as I have found to be the case in other novels.

Despite the several frustrations I had while reading this, I was still entirely engrossed in the outcome of the characters and sobbed over the main events of the book. But I am excited to read Book 2 and am curious to see how the writer will take events from this book and further the journey of these characters going forward.

I'm not sure I can do this debut novel justice but here we go:

Leaves May Fall has stolen my heart. This book is so well written. The prose is effortless and so easy to read. I was pulled in nearly immediately but the descriptive nature of the writing. The scenes and places are rendered so easy to see in your head, yet it's never too wordy. (You're not going to get 11 pages describing a feast table).

I loved the magic system in this book. I'm sure a similar magic system exists somewhere in fantasy but this was a wholly unique amalgamation of magic and made for an extremely compelling and intriguing read.

Our main characters are stunning. To say I am completely obsessed with Merriam would be an understatement. She is badass in every sense of the word, and has zero problem jumping to help those she loves. But she is also flawed and it makes her relatable. I enjoyed every character in this book. Despite being a spectrum of far to human, they all have such humanity. They all have positive and negative traits that make them multi-dimensional and realistic.

Leaves May Fall is chalk full of all the fantasy tropes we know and love. When you pick up a book written by someone who also loves books what else would you expect. And because we all wonder: the spice isn't at all cringe either. It's well written and the banter is fabulous.

Honestly though, don't take my word for it: go pick up your own copy of Leaves May Fall on Amazon

♥️ What I Loved
I wanted a book to throw me off, show me something different, and hurt my heart! And boy, did I get it. I got exactly what I asked for and am suffering for it now! This is not a formulaic romantasy, it’s laid out differently and is beautifully and purposefully done. Also, the bestie vibes are unmatched—it has my entire heart!

Honestly, nothing! It was awesome! It just didn’t have that 5-star magic for me (maybe because I’m a bit slumpy).

Couldn't connect with the characters because they already knew each other from the start. This book kinda felt like it was the second book of a trilogy. We only get to know a bit of how their relationships formed was through the flashbacks which wasn't much too. The plot was so slow where it felt the stakes were very low.

Oh god what a roller coaster ride😂😅
I’ll be honest I thought this book was like 300 something pages… it was not 😂 and I couldn’t be more happy. Carissa really portrayed grief so well. Like really really well. Call me weird but it REALL REALLY stands out to me when someone can portray emotions so well and realistically.
It had all the feels.
I laughed. I cried. I got anxious lol. I was excited. I was absolutely giddy. I was confused (just for a second) I was shocked. I was DISTRAUGHT. I died and I slowly came back and after a little while I laughed again. I still felt all the emotions and I was still deeply sad (might be a little TO invested in theses characters fictional lives lmao) but giddy at the cute or snarky little bits. All that said I fell slowly very much in love with this book, it’s world and it’s characters. Thank you thank you thank you Carissa for this beautiful creation you’ve given us. Though it’s not to say I didn’t despise you a time or two while reading this 😂😂😡❤️.
Ps. Mollian is probably the best male name ever in all existence and I am absolutely irrevocably in love with him and his name.
Anyways READ IT NOW. 5/5

I enjoyed this book! I was especially impressed bc I believe this is the author's debut book. No holes in the magic system which was a nice reprieve from a lot of the fantasy books I have read. I enjoyed the side characters and how the main characters evolved throughout the book.

Did I have a hair touching/braiding kink before this book? No. Do I now? *It's a possibility* drooooling. The author did a beautiful job of writing enough intimate scenes without leaving you wanting more or annoyed at the overuse of them. Perfecto!
In that same vein...kind of, Mollian is Ace (asexual) which I found very interesting since I have not encountered an Ace character before. I don't think I would've understood that he was asexual though if I did not follow the author on social media and she disclosed this fact. I don't think it is said explicitly in the book? Not a negative thing, I just think my understanding of it is limited.

I would neverrr tell an author what to do...but please, please MORE PANIC :) his sass is a salve on my soul. For those who don't know, Panic is an opinionated falcon who loves treats and giving attitude and we love him very much.

Oren is a swoon-worthy character. I really liked Mollian, but for some reason I didn't feel like I connected with him?? Merriam was very relatable and an overall well-rounded character. I loved the idea of fated friendship and I think the author did a very good job executing it.
Leaves May Fall captivated me, my one reason for 4 and not 5 stars would be the length of the book caused me to lose momentum while reading and kind of forget the contents of the first half of the book.
Overall, I am excited and anticipating the second book of this series! I can see myself falling in love with these characters (and new characters??) all over again in the second installment! Brava!

I received the ARC for this book.

I'm going to start by saying that I really enjoyed this read. It had an excellent balance between action, magic and romance. I couldn't say it's mostly romance or mostly adventure because it blends so fluidly.

The author took a unique spin on merging the modern world with a magical realm which I really enjoy. They addressed issues like technology, science and the main character (who grew up in the modern world) didn't immediately stop using current day vernacular and revert to "Ye Olde English". The term Neckbeard is used and I absolutely guffawed. This take on putting a modern character in a magical universe is closer to Everworld or The Magicians than it would be to, say, Narnia.

All of the characters were well fleshed out and each relationship carefully considered. The cast is diverse (including an, I'm assuming, asexual character) with individual personalities.

The author worked really hard to flesh out the universe and reality. At times, I felt that there was too much focus on the everyday hubbub and I found myself itching to get back to the main plot points.

The romance was well done and did include some spice. If you are not a fan of explicit romance scenes, you may want to read with caution.

It was an emotional read at times and I found myself admiring the author's ability to capture a sense of grief and loss.

I also found that I was able to guess a few of the twists (even if sometimes only a few lines before they happened) WHICH I LOVE! For me there is nothing I love more than a story with the proper foundation, foreshadowing and logic. Screw, subverting expectations or writing in twists that are explained away by "magic". This author laid the appropriate groundwork and led me right down the path she created and I loved it.

I will definitely be buying a copy for my shelf and looking for the next installment!

Buckle up cause this is gonna be quite the regurgitated review. I need to clarify that I liked the story to some extent. The characters in Merriam’s circle are very respectful of her feelings which is rare to see in a genre like this (but this is a double-edged sword for reasons I will explain later) and I liked the idea of the fantasy world in parallel to Earth with this Merrha bond.

The honeymoon phase ended around the 30% mark where the story meandered. There’s the initial plot conflict with the attack on nymphs developing into something far sinister, but it’s brushed aside to focus on Merriam’s inner conflict with her feelings for Oren and the struggle to prove to everyone that she isn’t the “Prince’s Pet.”

Calling this an Epic Dark Fantasy has to be a reach because I was expecting more action adventure and grittier magic and characters, but the story falls heavily on the romance that it ignores the plot most times in favour of creating “chemistry” between Merriam and Oren. Nothing wrong with romance, but I feel tagging it an epic is misleading. The writing is also juvenile in cases which further threw me off.

Incoming Character Thoughts

Oren. He’s nice, respectful, loves Merriam and the heir apparent. That’s all there really is to him. It was disappointing to see that we would get no further backstory or past chapter to their initial meeting, everything being told through the characters. We are meant to just go with their infatuation and history and root for them. One of the main brownie points to his character is that he’s supportive towards Merriam, but it’s the unwavering faith and respect he has that makes it impossible to generate major conflict in their relationship. Sure, we got the dynamic of a human mercenary being together with a High Fae Prince and what that politically means, but it’s mostly an internal struggle because Oren already accepts her wholeheartedly. I was legitimately waiting for some kind of secret to reveal itself, but nope, he’s just a really wholesome, good guy.

Mollian. I really liked him from the cast and wished we got more out of him like a dual POV, but his character was just there until the last 100 pages where he has some growth. The Merrha bond was fascinating to read about because it isn’t used as a romantic subplot to bring two characters together – it instead being purely platonic in this situation. It was even more refreshing to see that Mollian was indifferent to dating! It gets old when every main character needs to be paired up with someone. But like his brother, I wanted a darker internal struggle especially with this soul deep bond. We kind of got to see that near the end where the bond intensifies and Merriam is desperate to be in close proximity to Mollian, but since they love and understand each other on a deep level it doesn’t lead to true tension and conflict.

Rovin. The taut Ranger who annoys the heck out of Merriam. He goads her and does all the typical bully stuff, and yet, I was kinda rooting for him?? Their dynamic of back and forth insults fed my need for drama in the plot. No offence to Oren, but the hate to begrudging respect to potentially something else (I see ya Rovin O.o) was way more interesting. There’s definitely more backstory on Rovin’s end with his half fae heritage and his growth in strength which create parallels between him and Merriam which make me see the two as “enemies to lovers.”

The Mercenary Crew. I love them when they’re together and what they represent for Merriam, but I had trouble differentiating them. There is a winged dude who has history with Oren which is never explained, nymph healer, Aleah whom I would say is the most fleshed out, antler guy and the two humans. They all had surface level personalities and I was hoping we got to see more scenes of them together, like them sneaking behind the scenes from the Crown and finding out what’s happening. Throughout the rest of the story, they were reduced to acting as support and being there for Merriam.

Incoming Plot Thoughts

So much and yet so little happened. The story is basically set in two places in the world: the Palace or the Gate place, and then nothing else from the rest of the world. They seem to be entirely contained in their own bubble which doesn’t do much for immersion in a fantasy world.

From what I gathered of this part of the fantasy world, they are in a country governed by the royal Keeper bloodline who protect the gateways to different dimensions, their world being the centre. There is a mixture of fae and human, alongside nymphs and sprites who are apparently linked to the Keeper’s original magic, if I remember correctly. There is also the normal human tongue, plus Common which is what the Fae use. At the same time, Earth which parallels theirs can be used by the Keepers to travel around easier. It’s honestly a very interesting premise, but we never get to know much more about the world other than what we should to understand the story.

I mentioned previously that dual or multiple POVs could have created some more nuance to the world because some conversations were just Merriam asking things and then the fae spoon feeding her some world building fact. While we did get some snippets from other character’s POV, I just wanted a true chapter where it was one character’s thoughts. It got confusing real fast when we switched roughly between different characters in a chapter, even though it was technically Merriam’s POV.

This review has become a mess of thoughts, so I’m gonna round it off by summarising my personal thoughts: the story could have been darker with more adventure, wished there was less romance so we could focus on the plot and actual conflicts, and wanted characters to be more fleshed out.

Will I check out the next book, maybe?

Brilliant!!

"If you’ve ever walked through a forest and felt that maybe, just past the edge of what you can see, magic might exist … this is for you."

Dayum! I'm not really sure why this book isn't up there with the greats, as far as the fantasy romance genres goes. This book is written so incredibly well, the characters attach themselves to your soul, and the plot is so very different from the clutter of other "fae romances." I absolutely adored these characters! The pacing was perfect. I especially loved the originality. I heard this was a debut novel, and I am shocked. Prepare for all the feels.

If you're looking for something that makes you feel, unique pairings and plot, and spice that makes your toes curl, definitely pick this one up. I highly recommend. Leaves May Fall is going on my favorites list for the year, and that's saying a lot, seeing as I don't have very many on there for the year.

As an ARC reader I was terrified to read Leaves May Fall in case I hated it, safe to say I absolutely loved it!

When I first started reading the prologue I was worried that my worst fear was going to come true but after the first chapter I realised that it was just the usual 'trying to get into a fantasy book and not understanding the words' and Carissa introduced me (as the reader) to the world in a clear way, weaving past memories in to help me understand the complex world, nay, universe.

I loved how unique this book is in terms of the world and dynamics, for example how the guy best friend is never anything more than that - because men and women can just be friends! (You might understand the uniqueness of the plot when you are about 80% through the book - I just couldn't believe she had done that for so long)

Carissa Hardcastle is a skilled writer and I will be buying her next book the second it comes out! (Hopefully a sequel of Leaves May Fall after that epilogue O_O)

Here are some little things which just add to it:
Chapter titles using things characters will say in that chapter
Guys' POV (though not regularly)
Guy best friend, but platonic
LGBTQ+ representation without it being a plot point (aromantic/asexual + gay)
Banter/sass (I could honestly have an entire book of just interactions between the characters
without any of the plot and I would have absolutely loved it)
Character list, chapter list and map at the start

Definitely going to buy the paperback to add to my collection - I am happily paying for this book!

It's no lie I like high fantasy books, so when this was recommended I jumped in without too much research.

I enjoyed this book and the writing style and world building. It was romantic but at times unrealistic but again, this is fantasy. I did wish some of the characters were more explained but at times a few of the side characters did feel a bit flat.

The world built was intriguing and I enjoyed how the author set up Traveling. I'm looking forward to reading the next novel in this series and to see more character growth and development and see where the author will take the characters from where they are now.

DNF at 40%

This story was entertaining and I was really enjoying it at first. It reminded me a little bit of The Cruel Prince in the beginning with Merriam living on earth and being taken to another Fae world to live in where she truly belongs. The dynamic here between Oren and Merriam is really enticing and I enjoyed the romantic push and pull. However, there just wasn’t enough happening with the plot to keep me interested. The story crawled to a stop for me when there was an entire chapter about Merriam doing drugs/having a bad high and touching her hair constantly.

Also- the amount of times the author talks about hair in this book is alarming and annoying. It was funny at first, then it got old very quickly.

Idk, this one just wasn’t for me.

I really liked this book and it didn’t end the way I expected it to end. My one small complaint is that we are told constantly how much Mollian needs Merriam, but we aren’t really shown it that much, especially compared to how much we’re shown her needing him. I still loved both characters so much and absolutely love the bond between them.

Apart from that one small thing though the characters were wonderful and believable and the world was enthralling. I was constantly moved and completely immersed in it. More please!

This book was so beautifully written that I have been struggling to put into words how it made me feel. The author was able to capture one of the best platonic soul mate friendships I've ever read. The world and character building are amazing and it fully engulfs you into the story. I will be thinking about this book for a while!

This may have been my favourite book of 2022! I love a book that causes out loud laughter as well as tears. The world building is amazing, without being too wordy. I am fully invested in this story. The MC as well as supporting characters are so well fleshed out. I am so excited to see where this goes.

This is my favorite fantasy read by far this year. I even like it so much more than ACOTAR and I love ACOTAR. This book will forever grace my shelves and I will throw my money at any new editions.

Now, before I get started. Let me tell you that this book will break your heart. Actually let me reiterate that sentence. This book will break your heart and then take those two halves, stomp on them and then laugh at the dust that remains of your once whole heart.

With that said, happy reading.

What I love most about this book is mirrored souls. No, I did not say soul mates. I said, mirrored souls which is a totally awesome idea. If Carissa Hardcastle came up with that concept, it’s freaking brilliant.

Mirrored souls is exactly what it sounds like. Almost like a soul mate but doesn’t have to be sexual. More often than not, platonic. And I LOVE the MC’s mirrored soul, Mollian. Their relationship is absolute perfection.

And then don’t even get me started on the spice scenes. They were everything a girl could want. And then the romance *I’m swooning* Oren is a piece of delectable cake. He knows Merriam so well that he can pretty much read her thoughts. And he see’s her brokenness and still loves her and gives her exactly what she needs.

If I haven’t said it already, this book is perfect. It is the right amount of action, romance, spice and fantasy. Like it’s not too much spice or too much action. It’s literally perfect. 👌🏼 I mean, the first chapter is an action scene, how much more perfect can you get from that? And then we even have gore which is a must when you have action.

So what are you waiting for? Go pick this bad boy up. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
