“These stars of ours were written in darkness and bound with light…”
I fell in love with them thirty-five million heartbeats apart and an ocean away.
One shaped me at the scratch of a pen and the other remade me with the strum of a note.
And the truth is that I loved them both, desperately.
I never foresaw our worlds colliding. How the past and present would crash together and leave us with nothing but a blinding kaleidoscope of pain. How the threads of all of our fates were already so inextricably intertwined from the moment of those first meetings.
And maybe my selfishness is unforgivable… of being unable to choose.
But they were both selfish enough to love me too. Even when they shouldn’t have.
That’s what they don’t tell you about love though. That it can be a selfish thing, never ending in its demand for the infinity of that one person. Or, in my case, two.
And maybe that makes it okay… or maybe it just makes all of our actions all the more unforgivable.
Maybe we all should have been better.
I’ll let you decide.
*Entangled is book one of A Twisted Tale trilogy, which is a modern day retelling of Helen of Troy. It is new adult/contemporary romance and is recommended for 18+.*
R. Phillips loves to write romance stories full of angst, plot twists and a generous sprinkling of salacious scenes. Playing with timelines is one of her favorite things to do in her writing along with including a dash of mythology. She’s also a big fan of leaving your jaw on the floor.
Rachael is a native Texan, reader first, and frequently imagines her book scenes to songs. She is a lover of coffee, tex-mex, and is probably too particular when it comes to her choice in red wine. She credits any success to the long line of strong women she comes from who gave her a steely spine, taught her to know her mind, and to always rise.

This debut novel doesn’t read like a debut novel. I will post a better review when my words catch up to my brain.
*** updated review ***
After finishing an entire series, I am still thinking about this book.
El has had a rough life and we follow her on two timelines, the present and a year ago. Based on the story of Helen of Troy, she meets two men who are completely different, but manages to fall for them both. Meanwhile, El is trying to uncover what happened to her parents many years ago.
I love how relatable El is. I love how she doesn't apologize for who she is but doesn't come off as entitled. I can't believe this is a debut novel because it did not read like one. There were a few repetitive phrases throughout, but it did not bother me.
This book is perfect for fans of The Ravenhood Series. There's mystery, there's intrigue, there is lots and lots spice. I can not wait for the sequel!
I finished this last night but forgot to update because I went STRAIGHT into book two. Messy messy love triangle and I am ENTERTAINED. 3 stars because the FMC annoys me a lot of the time, and I feel like the plot has so much potential but there was a lot of spice drowning it out, BUT I devoured and am excited for answers in book 2!!
Wait wait wait WAIT A DAMN MINUTE. How have I never heard of this series??? How is it not more popular?
I saw a review that compares it to the Ravenhood series, so of course I had to check it out. And? And I was nose to page for 3 hours straight. Yes. Yes it does give Ravenhood vibes but also very different. I felt like it was more along the lines of Ghosted by Rosie Walsh. The heartbreak is very on par with Ravenhood series.
What has kept me hooked is the MYSTERY. What happened??? Why did it happened??? How did it happen?? And that is why I sprinting to the next book.
GREAT spice. 3/5 🌶 I take off a star because the FMC can just be too much for me at times. Just not the vibe. But I also kinda love her?
THIS BOOK WAS EVERYTHING. I can’t believe this was her first book she has ever written, I was blown away. I devoured it. As much as love triangles anger me, I also love the drama and tension they bring! The dialogue was great, the character development was rich and the plot was A+++ Add to that a mysterious death(s) to solve and you have it all! I CAN NOT wait to read the other two in the series, so anxious to find out how it all ends. Do yourself a favor and READ THIS ASAP!
My fricken heart!! This book reminded me soooo much of my favorite series ever (The Ravenhood), but was different enough to be its own story. I really loved finding similarities between the books and I loved playing detective while reading Entangled!
I will say that I predicted a lot of what happened, and guessed the ending perfectly lol. Maybe I’m just that good 😂
I’d say this was really good for a debut novel! There were some incredibly heart-warming quotes in here that I will never forget.
This one does end on a cliffhanger so I’m going to be diving into Bound IMMEDIATELY.
"These stars of ours were written in darkness and bound with light. Ensuring my soul would seek yours for eternity. Forever lost to this captivating insanity of we."
I am stunned, gripped, enamored, OBSESSED.
Entangled is dual timeline first book in a 3-book series following El. She has a tragic past and doesn’t believe in love. Against her better judgment, she falls for two guys in two different timelines. Coop, the mysterious tattooed bad boy of her past, and Jace, the sunshine guitar playing sweet guy of her present.
This book is really character and romance driven with some elements of mystery and a dash of suspense. To say I’m gripped is an understatement. There are so many secrets and questions I NEED to know what’s going on. I also am loving the angst.
For the sake of spoilers, I don’t want to give too much away BUT
Read if you like ✨ angsty love triangles ✨ strong & sassy fmcs ✨ broody bad boy mmcs ✨ sunshine mmcs ✨ secrets and betrayals ✨ contemporary Helen of Troy retelling
This book, I will say took me a bit to get into it. But the characters and the mystery seemed intriguing enough to keep going, but by the 40% mark the pace really picked up and before I knew it I was being smacked in the face with a freaking cliff hanger!!!! Omggg, I did kinda see it coming but yah I loved it and 100% dove into bound right after this.
Also jace and his special piercing, that was a first in a book for me but I’m not complaining 😅
Would recommend!!!! Present Day/ One year Ago story line told from the FMC POV
First, thank you so much to the author for providing me with an ARC of Entangled and allowing me to review this work of ART (even though I’m not sure I should forgive you for the emotional turmoil I have been through..)
Now, where do I even start?
El is a twenty-something badass from LA, on a journey to uncover details about her troubled past while emotionally recovering from some much more recent experiences. Entangled bounces back and forth between El’s present-day life to her adventures of a year prior.
This book is beautifully written. I refuse to believe this is the authors first piece of work because of how well this was done! Every second of this story is emotional and raw, and a complete roller coaster of falling in love and breaking your heart. I laughed and I cried and upon finishing the book, cursed the author because I now must wait until she writes a sequel to find out what happens next.
If you like swoony love-interests, headstrong women, heart stopping emotions, fantastically written spicy scenes, and a touch of mystery, you need to read this book. I promise, you will not be let down!
I didn’t feel like she had enough time to fall in love with either guy. El was so annoying and I got sick of every single smirk written as a bratty smirk or a bratty look.. find another word.
If I’m completely honest I was expecting more based off all the 5 star reviews I see, however it’s definitely a good story
I think for me the constant switching between past and present was slightly annoying, even though it was necessary but I felt like the book was 400+ pages but not reallyyyyyy much happened? Understand it’s a trilogy and setting the scene etc but I knew from the start he was gonna pop back up at the end lol
That being said it’s beautifully written and heavy on the Ravenhood series vibesss 🫶🏽 which is always a win in my eyes!
OMG what did I just read? As another reviewer commented, THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!! I am not even sure where to start with this review. And the fact that is this the authors first book is completely astounding.
This story follows El on the path of her life running from and struggling to face the tragedy in her past moving forward into the arms of Coop and later on Jace. The novel goes back and forth between two times in her life and the two great loves of her life. I absolutely LOVE El as a FMC. She is strong and feisty and goes for what she wants in life (although it doesn't always go as planned). She is broken and lovely- a woman of many contradictions but so believable and endearing. The two men in her life and pretty awesome too. Both strong, yet sensitive and broken in their own ways too. But as mentioned in this book, their broken pieces just fit together. Definitely swoon-worthy. Their chemistry is off the charts and the romance and spice is the same. I loved the witty banter between them, and there are definitely some laugh out loud parts of this novel. I love how the men are complete opposites from each other and yet oddly the same. But their dichotomy of dark and light seem to click with different parts of El perfectly. Not sure if this is the authors intent (to highlight the deliciousness of a first love- or maybe because words are just his thing), but for me ( for whatever reason), when I looked back at all the lines that I highlighted and I hate to say, they are all things that Coop said!?!
El's horrific past and PTSD is definitely an important part of this book and you can see how it affects everything that happens to El. One of my favourite parts of this book though, was actually the prologue. I love how the R Phillips talks about first and second loves and what happens when it breaks down.
BUT THE ENDING?!?!? OMG AND WTF?! I saw it coming around the 80% mark but it still left me speechless. That being said, I have sooooo many theories but no idea where it goes from here.
If you are a reader who loves romance of any kind, love triangles, broken tragic pasts and healing futures or strong characters....or if you just have a heart beat, this is the book for you.
first & foremost - this shit gave me serious Flock PTSD. i read this under the premise it had similar vibes to the ravenhood trilogy (because i will forever be in mourning), and in terms of characters, it delivered. while i wasn't crazy about el's relationship with coop, i was abhorrently team jace... and by that, i mean team jace-but-really-i'm-thinking-about-sean-from-the-ravenhood-trilogy.
p r o s : onto the actual book - this was pretty good, especially considering it was r. phillips's debut novel. her writing was seamless and she left no plotholes unfilled. she brought the characters to life from the very beginning, and i fell in love with all of them. this book had a good combination of romance, angst, comedy & grief. also, holy fucking cliffhanger?!?! a bitch is INVESTED, and now i'm ready to dive tf into Bound and see where jace ends up 👀
c o n s : call me a hoe, but i felt like the smut wasn't up to par? idk what's wrong with me.
*sidenote: * there's honestly nothing wrong with enchanted; i think i was just so intent on reading something similar to Flock, that this book fell short when the similarities stopped with jacesean. & no, that wasn't a typo.
I knew this was a Helen of Troy retelling so I went in thinking I was going to get a fantasy-ish story about a princess being kidnapped, enemies to lovers, all that jazz.
Within the first few chapters I realized I was very wrong and that this trilogy has the potential to drown me in feels. Which I can say it did, I am drunk off of them. I was actually afraid to read it too fast because I knew my heart was going to take a beating.
This is a contemporary book with a love triangle and a mystery thrown in (a rather good one too). I switched sides so many times and I loved the time jumps because it allowed me to fall in love with Jace and Coop at the same time versus being able to pick a fav. I think I’m leaning towards #TeamCoop right now though
I was going to take a break because I know that shit is about to hit the fan but idk if I can stop now 😭😭😭.
Im giving it 🌶️🌶️🌶️ and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75
Slight Spoiler vent below * * * * * * * * * * * I figured out who Jace was to Coop pretty early on and suspected Leah was a spurned lover who was there the night El’s parents died or at least knows something about it. That bitch Sam is going to be a problem too - I can feel it in my bones. I also think the reason El left Coop was valid but pre-mature - you could have waited at least a week? It’s your fault you didn’t know shit about him, stupid. &I bet Leah had something to do with that too cause she’s a weird lady! Coop was obsessed with her so I need to know why he didn’t answer his phone for 5 fucking days.
It’s hard for me to believe that this book is the first from this author. I am such a stickler for how a writer words and pieces their story together, and I am one thousand percent happy with how Rachael does it in Entangled. It’s honestly flawless.
From start to finish, it’s captivating and beautifully written. The plot and characters are both so unique. I am so happy that she reached out to me to ask me to ARC read and review. It was such a nice surprise and I have a brand new insta-buy author I got to add to my list! Rachael is going to do big things in her work to come. I can feel it in my gut. I CANNOT wait for her next books!
“That’s just a part of being alive. Pain is going to find you in life whether you seek it or not. Better to experience the high and be a little bit broken from the story than spend your whole life fucking starving.”
Väga hea lugemine! Ja kreisi cliffhanger lõpus. 4/5, sest peategelase iseloom veidi liiga kange minu maitsele. Muidu 👌.
This is sooo Ravenhood-coded. I couldn’t put this book down. For a debut novel, this is so well written & flows so nicely. & we all know I am a SLUT for a love triangle.
First off WOW and second of all how could with that ending! Told in the past and present this story told us two versions of a love story.
El and Coop were the past and El and Jace are the present but there is always a plot twist and this was one I did not see coming. OMG, I kinda thought that was what was happening but I didn’t expect it to end like that.
I love that El was hesitant to accept that she was in love after suffering something so tragic when she was younger to be able to overcome that and find love twice was amazing!
I can’t wait to see what happens next because I am on the edge of my seat!
“They were such a striking contrast, one the dark night and the other a brilliant sun.”
I could not put this story of El, Cooper and Jace down. It is told from El(Eleanor) POV and switches timelines between her relationship with Cooper a year prior to present when she goes to visit her hometown and meets Jace. I loved all the characters and their emotional and real stories. El is relatable in that she is closed off from finding love because of her past family trauma. She meets Cooper while on vacation in Costa Rica wanting only a fling. A year later she meets Jace while going home to have some closure of her family’s past and also heartbroken. It is An emotional journey for her while also a bit of family mystery. Although I did guess some things early on it didn’t deter me from loving the book and I still don’t know the full scope of all the relationships and reasons. A fantastic cliffhanger has me going into book 2 immediately because I know so much will be unveiled and the triangle will be more intense.
Contemporary Romance. Good spice. Single POV. Past and present timeline
4.5 ⭐️ - This genre is hard to impress me - this book really took it a step further. I don’t typically enjoy much in this genre (it’s not done well by a lot of authors), but I was absolutely floored by this book. From start to finish, it had me on my toes, just waiting for the ball to drop. And when it finally did? My jaw hit the floor. The ending was everything I didn’t expect but somehow needed.
If you can handle the slowest and fastest (IYKYK), most drawn-out, mysterious storyline—in the best way possible—this book is for you. It kept me hooked, and I can’t wait to dive into the second book!!
Honestly, the caliber and quality of this work is leaps and bounds above most books in this genre. It’s such a shame it hasn’t gained more popularity because it deserves to be talked about more. What an absolute gem.
Main character was just annoying and as much as I wanted to know who was behind her parents murder, that was the only thing that made me want to continue reading. There was a lot of telling not showing, smirking, and unwarranted attitudes. I just don’t understand her mindset and can’t fathom anyone acting the way she does 90% of the time. Who walks around on a high horse like that?
I get the author maybe wanted to portray her as an independent badass, uncaring of other peoples opinions… but she came across as a stuck up snob that needed an attitude adjustment. Which made it impossible for me to understand why anyone wanted to be around her.
I really loved this book!! The story was so intriguing and kept me engaged the whole way through. This book does involves two love interests, but the stories are told between past (1 year prior) and present. There is a lot of mystery involving both love interests and regarding the FMC’s past.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves romance with a side of mystery. Personally, I was getting Ravenhood vibes, so if you liked that series, definitely try this one!!
Thank you so much to Rachael for the ARC! I cannot believe this is your first book ever! It’s amazing
First of all, this book is beautifully written. You would never guess this is a debut novel. The story telling is so well done it feels like you’re reading a seasoned author’s writing, which makes me really excited to see what this author continues to put out in the future.
I really liked El. She is a compelling and complex character. I love that the author doesn’t shy away from showing all her good and bad parts. I loved her strength, snarkiness, and dgaf energy, but I also loved to see her flaws, the fears, the armour she wears like a brick wall, and her cowardice. She is such a dynamic character and it’s great to see a realistic FMC in all these lights.
It’s impossible to choose which man I’m more obsessed with. Jace is the very best example of sunshiney, golden-retriever energy. He is so open and honest, he wears his heart on his sleeve without shame. And my god.. this man is so freaking hot when we get into the steam 🥵. Coop is the more passionate and intense one. He’s mysterious and artistic and I can’t wait to learn more about him.
We don’t have to wait very long to get to the steamy scenes, but it doesn’t feel rushed either. It happens organically, as these two swoony love stories unfold in both past and present. It is so fun reading El fall in love with these two completely different men in each time line. They have entirely different personalities, but they both are exactly what she needs (and call her out on her shit). The romance is top notch.
Hints are dropped throughout the book that elude to a much larger story unfolding. Just when I think I’m figuring something out, a million more questions arise. The author has set up the rest of this trilogy brilliantly, leaving readers on the edge of their seat (and desperate for the next book with that cliffhanger 🤯). The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is because I would have liked to get some answers by the end. There are so many threads of unknowns weaved into the story and I was left with only more questions and no resolve. As a reader, it would have felt a bit more satisfying if one of the threads had wrapped up after all the build up.
This book comes out July 26th and I HIGHLY encourage you check it out! This new author is coming out with something great and I can’t WAIT to see what she puts out next.
I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review
Genre: Contemporary Romance CW’s: some light violence, past murder/suicide (off page), multiple love interests
Entangled is Rachel Phillips’ debut novel and I am STUNNED. This is one of the best debut novels I’ve ever read. Filled with love, spice, and twists, Entangled will keep you guessing until the very last page.
Eleanor, Coop, and Jace - ugh, my heart. Where do I start? I loved El, I loved how she grew and opened up, I loved how sarcastic and sassy she was, and I LOVED her POVs from the previous year, but my favorite thing about her is how she found her way and self throughout the story.
Coop & Jace both stole my heart, but halfway through I was officially #teamcoop and I never looked back. The spice started right from the beginning and both guys will have your heart palpitating.
Rachael’s writing is captivating, beautiful, and brilliant! There is detail after detail that you do not want to miss. I LOVE a book that keeps me guessing and coming up with crazy theories and not only does she keep you guessing but you feel every characters emotion from fear, to love, and everything in between.
Last but not least, THAT ENDING 🤯🤯🤯 - that’s all I’m saying. My advice, make sure you have Bound downloaded because you are going to want to start it IMMEDIATELY.
“It was an all-consuming kind of love. The kind that makes you overlook everything besides a need for more of that one person.”
I knew nothing going into this book other than that it was well loved and recommended by some trusted booksta friends. And with good reason. So I'm going to rec going into this book that way, and I'm not going to touch on the plot. So, while I felt this book was a tiny bit wordy and slow in places especially in the beginning, it kept me turning the pages despite that. I was captivated, wanting more, as the story slowly builds into something that leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for the shoe to drop... for the mystery of secrets to be exposed. And all I can say is I KNEW IT!! I enjoyed the characters, their depths and connections. There's emotion, humour, swoon and spice. All the feels, with a edge of suspense as the story unfolds. I definitely noticed the word brat used one too many times, but overall this is a solid debut. And I'm looking forward to diving into the next book!
4,5 Stars ⭐
