Twelve year old Carlos Machado is passionate about coral reefs. Living in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, he snorkels often in the Kahaluu protected reef and knows it really well. When he finds some coral bits on a bank of lava, he wonders how they got broken and on to land. A few days later, in another protected reef down the coast, he learns of broken coral on the shore and questions whether there's a connection. With his new friend, Pete Kamakua, he comes across clues pointing to illegal theft of coral and damage to the reef. They report their disturbing observations to the Marine Protection Officer, who initially ignores them. When Carlos and Pete provide more evidence, the officer and the sheriff swing into action along with the boys to catch the culprits. This thriller brings together beautiful reef adventures and marine conservation, and provides a gripping account of how Carlos and Pete help law enforcement protect the environment.
