Arcane #1

The Arcane: Part 1

Rate this book
I had a life once, but in one moment of madness, it was stolen from me.
Now, an animal prowls inside of me. A forgotten creature just like those I work with.
We are The Arcane.
We hunt those that hurt the innocent. The monsters that break out of the shadows.
One of those monsters has turned its eye to Forest Hills Academy.
It hunts the students. And as the school attempts to cover up the danger, no one is protecting them.
I came to the school to find the murderer but found so much more.
Three men. Three troubled pasts. And an undeniable connection.
My pain calls out to them, and it might finally be time to accept that I need saving myself.
But the monster still stalks the darkness, and it’s nothing I’ve ever seen before.
This is a fight I can’t back down from. I refuse to lose one more student, or the men who call to my fractured heart.

"Looking back now, I never would have guessed that the day I'd truly start to live would be the day I died." - Remi

So. . . That's the first line of the book and if it doesn't just hook you and reel you in, then I don't know what will!

Remi's been forced into a life she never got the option of choosing. Missions and assignments she wasn't thrilled to take but the current assignment takes the cake! Teenagers. . . A whole academy full of them. . . The assignment is to track down a threat to the school and the kids in attendance. Remi doesn't like to "people" but now she has to. And to top everything off she's an art teacher! With actual students and everything.

Remi has no idea what she's about to embark on. Things may just change in ways she never expected them to. Working alone all the time and ignoring your handler only gets you so far in life. Remi's about to discover more than just a dangerous threat at this academy. . .

First off! I need, need, need the next part of this book! So yes, there will be a big cliffhanger at the end of this book. Anyone want to attend an academy with supernatural beings and humans? Trying to prove to the world that shifters, witches, and so many more can live alongside humans. Even with some minor "teething" issues?

"I need to learn how to people better." - Remi

Same! I can relate to Remi on so many different levels. You can only hang onto anger for so long before it utterly consumes you. Causing you to be this person you don't recognize or want to be anymore. Remi may be an adult but she's about to grow up. Did you know that even as adults we are still growing? Growth happens in all stages of life, not just our adolescent years.

I really loved Remi's character and how she handled a certain scene with a jealous party. The jealous party also got what they deserved when they thought they had accomplished a power move. . . The way Remi handled it and just all the open communication amongst the cast was so refreshing! Of course there's still some barriers that need to be torn down, but work in progress.

I loved all of the cast and their different personalities. This book contains a "why choose" and RH themes. I enjoyed how the potential love interests had different paces. Some were instant while others were slower. So you get the best of both worlds with the instant action and the slow burns! MF action that's spicy and intimate. There's even an unrequited love in the book, sorry if that is a spoiler.

One of my favorite characters was Ellis! He is a shifter and that's all I am going to say. (Love what he shifts into!) I just want to honestly hug the big guy and commend him for having so much patience with Remi. Being a handler's already a tough job but Remi doesn't make it easy on the big cinnamon roll. I will also be going out with Ellis to get burgers, anyone want anything?

"The next week would be filled with dominance fights, hormones, tears, and general teenager related shit. Someone remind me why I decided to be a teacher!" - Garrett

This book does contain language, violence, and some teenager-related deaths. But the author conveys the deaths respectfully and even the cast respects things. One scene included a cast member not wanting to show a picture of the crime scene in consideration for the victim. This book has a giant mystery to solve and I loved watching the group trying to figure it out. Even sometimes working separately and having to catch one another up. References to Scooby-Doo were made within the book!

Enjoy the read with drama, crime solving, supernatural/mythical beings and so much more! Don't forget to give the author some stars!

Wow. Just wow. CJ has a talent for making lovable characters all with different personalities that makes you fall in love with them all.
When you get a ‘why choose’/RH a lot of the time all the men have the same personalities but in this book and her other books this is not the case.
The FLs are always kickass and head strong.

Remi starts off shut off from the world just doing her job to learning how to feel and let her men in. She is a total badass and does not need a man to save her. Her growth is aspiring and you can’t help but root for her through out this book.

Her men all have their own unique personalities that not only help Remi grow but themselves grow into the men Remi needs.

The story is filled with twists and unexpecting turns and I just couldn’t put this book down. It is filled with laughs and heart warming scenes and also scenes that have you on the edge wanting to see what happens next.

Yes it ends on a cliff hanger but it is a duet so that’s to be expected.

Bring book 2!!

Holy cow y’all are not ready for this amazing book! This whole new world is just so intriguing and captivating that you can’t help getting sucked in from the very beginning. Remi the FMC is just everything you could ask for! I swear she’s my spirit animal lol. She has the best wit and sarcasm and sass come to life that you can’t help but laugh and admire her so much with all she’s been through to get where she is now. The men were yummy alphas that each brought unique personalities to the table that makes it blend perfectly! Highly recommend this book! I promise you won’t be disappointed picking this book up and devouring it.

-the premise wasn’t for me, people getting stabbed to reveal their mythological shifter genes and make them a part of secret society, FMC has one personality trait: abrasive, yet she’s the top secret agent, there’s something in the woods…

Holy jeebus! What an ending. I did not see that coming. Loved this story. It caught me immediately, and if I hadn’t needed to do the adulting I would have read it in one sitting. I’m a bit book hungover, I want more of this story.
Remi was sassy and angry at how she was dragged into her new life, forced to leave a life she loved behind. She’s tough and smart and powerful, but still trying to figure out how she wants to fit her old self with her new self. Not to mention the adjustment to being a rare shifter now. I loved all the characters actually, and the world they are in. There was loads of mystery and intrigue, fun characters and banter, interesting creatures, awesome battles, and complex situations and relationships. Character growth and how different relationships evolved was fantastic.
After a couple of years battling monsters, Remi is going undercover at a new school that is attempting to teach both humans and supes. She is forced to not only people, but also revisit her artist self, after avoiding thinking about her past dreams since she was forced to change. This is something that her handler thought would be good for her, and he was right. Especially when she also meets 3 guys who manage to break through her armour and get her to start enjoying life again.
So now Remi and her 4 guys are trying to stop whatever has been murdering students, discover who is behind everything, while dealing with teenagers and staff drama.
This is one of those times where I feel like I want to read it all again straight away. Very much looking forward to the next book.

As always CJ has created a world that you can imagine. With characters that are well developed that you either fall in love with or absolutely hate. For FMC starts out a bit of an introvert going through the motions until gradually she lets her male in to her world.
And this lets her kickbutt side shine.
Her men are all unique but the dynamic between them all really works. LOL but hey why wouldn't they when their main concern is helping her. You don't get everybody's characteristics personalities traits flaws all at once you learn throughout the book. And I'm sure there's gonna be more to come that we learn in the next book.
Of course if you were at any of CJ's other books you know her stories aren't just about the Rh aspect… It's got a well developed part storyline That flows but it's full of lots of twist turns an unexpected happenings.

Honestly I have no words. Ma’am your talent is beyond amazing when it comes to writing your female leads Remi is freaking amazing the way this woman adapted to the turn her life took was nothing short of amazing. While she was going with the motions and not really living that all changed the moment she was handed her new assignment and she meets what will soon become her men!! I freaking love how each man is different and unique in their own way. I love that I can feel and visualize whose speaking through out the book because you have all of the guys such a strong voice none of them are alike and they each fit with Remi in a different way. This is one of those books that is unputdownable and I am dying to get my hands on book 2!!

Saying that Remi embraces her new life now the old one was brutally stolen from her, would be a huge exaggeration. She's doing the job that's expected from her, making the world safer wherever she goes, but emotionally she's a wreck. That is until a new job, and some new men in her life, finally seem able to melt the ice she put around her heart. Will she finally find the happiness she deserves? Or will the danger she's supposed to destroy be too much for them to conquer?

This first part in The Arcane duet is a mix of suspense, action, a bit of humor and a lot of bittersweet emotions. I'm not always a fan of protective harems, the emotions sometimes fall flat for me, but I enjoyed it in this book. They all have a past to overcome, and even with all those emotions present, they choose the adult way of dealing with it and with each other. Once they are in, they are fully in and my heart rejoiced for every new connection that formed. The suspense is on point and I absolutely did not see that ending coming! Somehow the author managed to give all the answers, and still leave us with a cliffhanger that makes me anxious to find out what will happen next.

Wow! This book was amazing! Remi is a remarkable strong FMC who lives a lonely life after she shifted and started working for the secret organization, The Arcane. But as her latest job has her working undercover at a school, she soon starts to feel like letting people in might be what she’s been missing out on. I loved this story as it was filled with mystery, suspense and had lots of supernatural characters. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next!

I loved every minute of this book and can't wait to read book 2.
Danger lurks around every corner at the academy but the Arcane is there to try and get to the bottom of it..
CJ is a great writer and has a way with developing the story from the get go and this one is no different.

Spelling and grammar things.

I felt like these books were confusing. There were times I'd have to reread something because it would be talking about one person and then it would switch to talking about another in the same paragraph without making it clear of the switch.

The second book was definitely not my favorite. So much back and forth of "I'll sacrifice myself" between everyone and it got exhausting. It seemed like filler. The constant wondering with all of the "theories" of what it all could be was head spinning.

It took me a long time to finish these two books when I can read one in a day. I kept falling asleep.

Too Dark

I was not prepared for how dark this books was. I enjoyed the beginning and the middle but I wanted to stop reading the last 3rd of the book. If you enjoy the darker side and attacks coming from all sides, read it. If like me, you need a bit more happy in your reading skip it. Also the romance is a bit off and I found myself skipping it as it was just awkward.

Might try again one day. For today I am finding the female Mc to be an annoying bitch and the males pretty bland and boring. Might give it another shot cause it sounds like a cool premise

Why the insta-love? WHY?!

I felt my wolf practically swoon, the fucker. That was it now, he was all in, and all it had taken was for her to hold my hand.

She’d blown into our lives 48 hours ago, and already I couldn’t imagine a day without her in it.

description

Nothing ruins a book quite as fast for me as instant insta-love. The book had barely begun and already the guys were head over heels in love with this woman they knew absolutely nothing about. And while in certain very special, very particular circumstances insta-love can work between mated shifters (such as when there's lots of denial, true snark, and angst involved), here there was zero struggle and barely a thought given to not jumping in with both feet.

But aside from my personal opinions on insta-love, it's an objectively terrible trope because it kills the necessity for any relationship development or chemistry building. If your characters are already in love when you're barely out of the gate, then the need to build a rapport and a solid foundation between them from where love can eventually bloom is rendered pointless and unnecessary. And that was precisely what happened on this first part of The Arcane .

There were some interesting ideas, such as a super secret supernatural police force comprised of mythological shifters tasked with keeping the balance between the rest of the supernatural community and the humans. Or the fae being mischievous tricksters hell-bent on causing chaos and destruction. Or the difficulties in finding common ground and nurturing friendships between different classes of supers, or them with the humans... but the way the book was executed was terrible.

While at first glance the writing had seemed super casual and very accessible, it quickly became apparent that it was simply not good. It was very repetitive—time and again resurfacing the same points—it lacked in descriptions (making it impossible to visualize the characters and their surroundings), it explicitly verbalized all that the characters were thinking and feeling, killing all nuance and subtlety and making it very tell-y, and it had SO MANY FREAKING EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!! This was a novel with adult-aged characters, and yet all the exclamation marks dumbed them down to melodramatic high-schooler level. It forced an air of childishness and immaturity that was very off-putting and in direct opposition to the darker, more violent elements of the story.

Then, of course, there was the insta-love and lack of chemistry and relationship development (as previously mentioned), a number of typos and malapropisms I picked up on, and the fact that this was a 450+ pages book, and yet barely anything happened—there was no depth to either the story or the romance.

All in all, this was a way too long, repetitive, boring book. With some interesting ideas, but not enough (or executed well enough) to make for a satisfying read. I won't be reading Part 2.

This was such a fun read! This book definitely had me wanting more in the best way possible. This is the first book I’ve read where it was based in an academic setting but not about the students. I loved how it was about the teachers. It was new to me and let me say I really enjoyed. I haven’t read a PNR book in a while and this book really had me wondering why because I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! I loved the characters and how they were each portrayed. Remi’s personality has me feeling like she was such a badass. I love a FMC who knows how to handle herself and isn’t portrayed liked a meek, “I need saving” kinda girl.

I loved an omega verse world and this was giving. The boys were all so good and I loved the animals. I wish we got to see more of that side (especially Ellis) but I think it will definitely be coming in the second books. I’m excited to find out the mystery and the twist at the end of book 1 I was not expecting it!!! There’s definitely a lot going on but I’m loving it.

I would have liked to have seen a bigger timeline as it felt like a lot of activities/chapters were squeezed into one day and it didn’t feel realistic in that sense. Like the girl had a lot going on when did she have time to sleep 😂. I would have also liked to have seen more in terms of the children from the guys POV and their relationships with them, especially Garrett since he’s meant to be their stand in alpha.

I definitely needed more spice in this book!!!! Like why did I have to wait so long!!! The tension is good but please, I need justice for Ellis!!! Why was he not given much in the books. I swear book too better be heavy on Ellis.

What a pleasant surprise this book turned out to be!
The story definitely picked up my curiosity as it focuses on an institution that is believed to be a myth amongst the supernaturals- the Arcane. Initially, when I was searching for a vampire book, this one came as highly recommended and although the main protagonist is not one, the story offers a diverse palette of supernaturals.

I really like Remi, she is trying to solve series of crimes while attempting to find herself again as it appears that she has lost her her ability to enjoy life after becoming part of the Arcane. As she goes undercover to solve the murder mysteries, Remi encounters new acquaintances that might be more than she bargained for.

The plot grabbed me from the start. I liked the whole dynamics within the supernatural world and the almost secretive existence of the Arcane with its mythical creatures. Loved the fact that the author had given time for the characters to get to know each other and let things develop gradually. The suspense is eloquently executed and the pace of the book just feels right, plenty of action, tension and genuine formation of connections. Starting the second book ASAP.

Flippin’ Brilliant !!!

What? My first thought was a bit (lot) more sweary but that’s not really acceptable on reviews.

Set on current contemporary earth the book opens with Remi undergoing a brutal mugging. Only it’s not quite your average “random act of mindless violence” because it wasn’t an accident. The person who attacked her knew exactly who she was.

As her life hangs in the balance things are going to get so much more complicated than she ever thought possible. All of that happens before she has to face her personal nightmare…teaching teenagersat a boarding school and catching who or what is killing them off.

This is an urban fantasy RH story. I read it a few years ago soon after it came out but the sequel was off in the future sometime. So I was absolutely delighted when it popped up on my wish list! Yay for book 2. Go on and read this book, I doubt you’ll regret it.

Rating :3,5 Stars

Read for rhr reading challenge 2022 - book with fewer than 100 ratings. At the time of reading there were 59 ratings.

I liked the mystery and the creature she is, since it is one I've never read before and only know of because I like reading about different mythologies.

It was long too, at 51 chapters where most rh first in series books clock in at about 20-30 max usually.

The mates thing went a lot quicker than expected since I thought this was slow to medium burn but perhaps it will be a duology?

I'm sorry to say I didn't see anything about length of the series or otherwise didn't read properly if it's in the description.

I think I'll read the next one and I hope there might be other mates coming to keep the story interesting.

This was really enjoyable. I loved the characters, their flaws, and their growth. Remi is an interesting character. Her bitterness about her past really consumed her but she was able to start seeing how destructive it was through her love of the others. Pacing wise - their relationships happened a little fast though. I'm going to excuse that due to them all being mates but I think a little more time to grow would have felt more natural. The story is done well. The urgency moves it along nicely and it doesn't feel too overshadowed by their personal issues. The desperation to figure out what's attacking the school is well illustrated.

Overall: 4.4/5 - We'll have to see with Part 2 but, as of now, this feels like a series I wouldn't mind rereading again down the line.

Remi is not like other women because she's witty, strong, etc. etc. this kind of characterization drives me nuts; why put down all other women to make your character great? You can admire those qualities without making it seem like no other woman can be like that.

Some of the plotting was a bit fast: I did enjoy the overall story. Will read next book when it comes out.

Totally captivating !!

I could not stop reading this book.
The characters are fabulous and the storyline grabs you and pulls you in.
Remi captures your heart, Garret makes you smile and chuckle along with him, Corbin makes you feel for him, Hunter makes you shout at him, but his character is fab. They are good friends and you feel the closeness through the book. And Ellis I want him!!! They are fantastic from start to finish and I’m hooked. A must read if you love a good shifter romance and a mystery rolled into one. I tell you, I did not see who was responsible coming !!!

What do you do when your choice of becoming a Legend creature id taken from you? Well you get angry and super self destructive that's what. The one person that can see that becomes desperate enough to send you on a mission that you really don't want to do, because you are angry and don't want to be part of the art world. But teaching teenagers, that's a low blow Ellis. The mission though might unthaw my cold heart though. These kids need someone to protect them. Let's just hope that they don't find out that the Arcane is real.

Remi is one baddie! She is the last shifter of her kind. I had a giggle in the beginning when she got shanked walking from class and then re emerged as a raiju. She truly is a marvel and strong then your average wolf. She’s also apart of the arcane . This book will suck you in and keep you totally engaged. There is a bit of steak with her mates . Other than that totally worth the read. I can’t wait for the next book.

Wow!

Just wow! This book will definitely have you trying to figure out all the twist and turns that are hurled at you, that's for sure. Normally, I can figure out who the ' bad guy ' is, but I have to admit that I didn't see this one coming. I can honestly say, that I am looking forward to the next adventure, and oh boy, there will be some serious bad crap happening for, hopefully not to, the wonderful characters in the next book.

This book had me from the first sentence.

Remi is forced into a life without a choice.

She has missions and assignments.

However the current assignment is one she isn't too happy to accept.

She has to "teach" teenagers in an academy.

While tracking down the threat to the kids.

She has no choice but dealing with her anti people problem.

But Remi has no clue what she is about to land in.

CJ Cooke that ending?
Why do this to us?

It was just mostly way too boring. And I didn’t feel any connection to the leading lady or her men. And then when I found out through reading comments about the second book and they’re being MM in it, even though it was nowhere tagged or said about elsewhere, which is so fucking annoying and a waste of my money. MM is just not for me and I wish that it was way more clearly printed for people to know about beforehand.

I was all in ….

…up to the end of this book. I will read the next book, but I’m disappointed with the liberties taken with some of the legends and standard characteristics of the mythical creatures. I also hope there’s some explanation given for the way Hunter exists, survives, and his back story.
This is a mild spoiler so you might want to stop here…
I was upset by the way he was just set aside and ignored at the end of the first book.

I absolutely am in love with this series! Book 1 was epically amazing! It was everything I didn’t know I needed to read. Remi is absolute perfection. She had a troubled past, but this mission really helps her become the person she was always meant to be. With the help of the guys, she is able to overcome the true Remington Sloane.

I'd rate this book a 3.5 , it easily could have been a 5star but it was a little long with to much filler tbh and the author needs to some more editing and the sexy scenes are quite vanilla in this book (hopefully the next one gets a bit spicier) and they aren't very detailed either. Anywho still a good book so far.
