Wow, I just finished this and I really have to write something about it.

First, I literally couldn't put this series down. I read in the strangest places and under the funniest circumstances - like at work when I actually was supposed to have better things to do. Ooops!

The fact that there is more than one couple in the series is entertaining and sometimes exhausting, especially because I didn't enjoy all couples with equal interest.

There might be spoilers ahead, so feel yourself warned.

I just loved Steph and Dominique. It was such an unlikely couple due to their many differences like age, political views, lifestyle, personal history, family status and so much more. Setting out their story as just a physical attraction for a one-night-stand is a thing we have read many times. However, their progress in the relationship that is built slowly and through many obstacles, is what makes that pair so very interesting and lovable. Both characters grow into the relationship, because, when real love is at play, there really is no other way, but they also grow as people, by accepting their new reality and adapting to it. Throughout the whole series, those two have made me go on reading, wanting to find out what they were up to next.

Juliette/Nadja: I have to admit, I was annoyed with Juliette and Nadja vor a while, because I just found it utterly childish how they dealt with their troubles and I could have slapped Juliette for doing what she did in their home, in their bed even. Considering they were both well into their forties, I would think that they should be more mature about many things. In the end though, I was glad how their story played out and why. Everyone has a history and their own demons. Maybe a lot comes down to that.

Claire/Margot: I was totally annoyed with Claire and Margot. Margot seems like a sexy person what with her motorbike and the leather jacket. I can also picture why a high-femme like Claire would go for her. Although I'm glad that they ultimately found their way, I felt like shaking Claire a lot more than any of the other characters. On the one hand she sounds like a very caring friend and on the other hand she seems full of narcisism, a bit like a toddler who doesn't get her way right away and then starts acting out to get attention. The storyline with Inez was difficult, but these things happen and even though I didn't really like that part of the series, I can understand it. What I really don't get is why Claire had to run to that awful woman, Marie. In the beginning of the series she is portrayed as very choosy and why she would hook up with Dievart of all people, knowing what she knew about her, is completely beyond me.

Solange/Aurore: The idea is striking... but I just couldn't see them together. I really tried, but I just couldn't feel their feelings and if it was another attempt to bring different people together (like Steph and Dominique), it failed miserably in my eyes. Maybe it's because those two characters didn't get as much attention as Steph/Dominique, because they were only part of two out of five seasons, but I really, really couldn't see their development in the same light. For me it all went a little too fast and there didn't seem to be any real tenderness between them and intimacy felt strange. Solange doesn't strike me as a woman who would go from acquaintance to lover in the span of an evening and I'm not even talking about the physical part. Also, I had the feeling she was straight at the beginning of her own story and I feel like we were missing the whole thought-process that comes with the realization that one might not be as straight as they believe. Kind of like it was written in haste without being as carefully crafted. Which is a pity, because they had potential.

Camille/Zoya: I'll have to read their story to decide whether or not they were portrayed well. I do know, that they were the main characters in their own novel, so it really wouldn't be fair to judge.

Now, there is one thing that really was difficult for me to read/comprehend:

The author seems to have a problem with both time and story. The later might be understandable because the seasons haven't been written in one go but rather with some time in between. So story errors are probably natural. Having read all five season in one piece though, I noticed quite a few errors:
- Dominique first approaches Barbier & Cyr after she has learned of her husbands cheating and wants to be represented by a PR agency. She states herself, that she wants a divorce --> this implies that the process of divorce has just started and is nowhere near finished.
- Dominique and Steph definitely meet and fall in love rather quickly. It feels like they sleep together in a matter of days rather than weeks or months into their working-relationship. Yet, in season 5 Dominique claims she met Steph AFTER being divorced, which is not true as Steph was the person handling her account at Barbier & Cyr from the beginning.
- The author gives the impression a character sits on the sofa and checks the time and then does the same again 2 sentences later and 40 minutes have, supposedly, passed. Yet, the character is not engaged into any activity that would make time passing so quickly seem logical, like watching TV or reading a book, or even knitting, for heavens sakes! It just doesn't feel natural.

All in all, a great series.

Great read...

I loved the political nature and the reality of the characters. I enjoyed the sexual descriptiveness, but it could have been overdone with a little too much emphasis on the S & M for my taste. I just skipped a lot of it. That is not feminism to me to need to be hurt to enjoy pleasure. Ea to her own I guess.

I enjoyed reading this collection - the first lesbian fiction I’ve read.
Initially I only bought the first book but became invested in the characters and their interactions and individual stories. At times I did question their actions (e.g Claire in the final book) as they didn’t always relate to how I interpreted them. What did surprise me though was that I was keen to find out what happened to each of the main protagonists but had absolutely no idea of what each looked like. Obviously I picked up on certain physical attributes (Nadia’s dark eyes, Margot’s abs etc) that had been mentioned but I could not visualise them at all and I’ve no idea why.
