From Agatha Award-winning author Daryl Wood Gerber, the fourth in an enchantingly whimsical series featuring Courtney Kelly, the owner of a fairy-gardening and tea shop in Carmel, California. It’s a special place brimming with good vibes and the kind of magical assistance its proprietor will need to investigate a shocking murder at a prestigious art show!
Making fairy gardens, and teaching crafters how to do the same, keeps Carmel-by-the-Sea shop owner Courtney Kelly busy—but sometimes she has to make time for a wee bit of detective work . . .
With a theater foundation tea and an art show planned at Violet Vickers’s estate, Courtney is hired to create charming fairy gardens for the event. It’s not so charming, however, when her best friend Meaghan’s ex-boyfriend turns out to be Violet’s latest artistic protégé. Even worse, not long after Meaghan locks horns with him, his body is found in her yard, bludgeoned with an objet d’murder.
There’s a gallery of suspects, from an unstable former flame to an arts and crafts teacher with a sketchy past. But when the cops focus on Meaghan’s business partner, who’s like a protective older brother to her, and discover he also has a secret financial motive, Courtney decides to draw her own conclusions. Fearing they’re missing the forest for the trees, and with some help from Fiona the sleuthing fairy, she hopes to make them see the light . . .

She has recently delved into the realm of romance with her first Christmas romance, HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
Fun tidbit: as an actress, Daryl appeared in “Murder, She Wrote.” She loves to cook, and she has a frisky Goldendoodle named Sparky who keeps her in line!
Daryl Wood Gerber always delivers a superb story, fun characters, and a memorable setting in her books. In A Flicker of a Doubt, the latest book in her Fairy Garden Mysteries, readers are treated to a murder in the art scene, where a not-so-very-nice artist is murdered by someone with a grudge. Weaving in beautiful magic and clever plot twists, Gerber packs a lot of punch into this installment, and each time we meet Fiona, the protagonist's fairy, we learn more about her backstory. How fun to find out her connections to others in the book. I recommend the series and look forward to the next release.
This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it enough to make me look out for more of her work.
A Flicker of a Doubt is set in a town where fairies are a normal way of life especially to those people who really believe and can actually see them. Others want to see them and occasionally see a flicker out of the corner of their eyes. Still others think it is all nonsense.
Courtney Kelly believes. She runs a business making fairy gardens and she has a fairy of her own called Fiona. When a murder occurs and her friend is a suspect Courtney begins her own investigation. There were all the numerous suspects and red herrings followed by a dramatic conclusion that make for a good cosy read.
A query - why would Fiona not be used to eavesdrop on suspects to help Courtney in her investigation? Is there some fact I am missing by not having read the three previous books?
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is the fourth book in the Fairy Garden mystery series. Ir really like the creativity in world building with this series. It’s fun to imagine a world with faeries really hanging out teasing those that can’t see them. I like the characters and I felt like the mystery was pretty good in this one. It did see a.little flimsier than normal of an excuse for our amateur sleuth to butt in, but I think she’s embracing that if there is a murder she’ll just have to dig around and see what she can turn up. Fiona’s journey to earn the Queen’s forgiveness is also progressing nicely. When Courtney’s friend Meaghan’s abusive ex-boyfriend returns and is found murdered in front of Meaghan’s home Courtney feels the need to help the investigation since her friend and Meghan’s business partner is arrested and Courtney knows it couldn’t be him.
A Flicker of a Doubt was a good read. I have read this series from the beginning. It takes place in the town of Carmel by the Sea. It is a town with fairies living there. Courtney Kelly is the main character along with the other characters from the first book. The supporting characters add to the story. Courtney is the owner of the store Your Imagination Fairy Garden Shop. Courtney shares the shop with her fairy, Floria. Meaghan Brownie,, her best friend is the owner of Flair Art Gallery.
Violet who is visiting the shop when Nicholas Buley storms into the shop to speak to her about the fact that Hunter Holt was also showing his art at the Theatre Foundation Tea. She informs him that there will be other artists also showing their art. Violet tells Charlotte that Nicholas has a bad temper, He also goes into The Flair and also makes a scene. Hunter Holt is also at the shop. Nicholas goes after Hunter hitting him in the face. Hunter goes after him. Ziggy, manager of the Flair throws them both out.
While working in her home greenhouse Courtney wants to discuss with Floria about her relationship with Aurora, queen of the fairies. She tells her that Aurora is her mother. Merriweather is her aunt. She will one day will be queen. She is a righteous fairy at this time.
Charlotte is at Violet's house in her garden listening to Sassy Jacobi playing her guitar . She will be playing at the party. Violet tells Charlotte that Nicholas is in a relationship with Sassy. She is the reason Nicholas is back in the area. Payton Buley, Nicholas's brother storms into the garden saying that Nicholas owes him money and wanted Nicholas to pay him back. Addie Tan is also involved with Nicholas. Sassy and Addie have both been seen fighting with him. Does he have something on them?
Ziggy is looking for Meaghan and tells Charlotte that he is at her house and has found Nicholas dead. Says that he has been murdered. He had come to the shop and had words with Meaghan. The police are called. Detective Dylan Summers and Officer Redcliff arrive. Courtney calls Meaghan and tells her about Nicholas. She is at her mother's house along with her fairy, Calliope.
They go to Meaghan's mother, Wanda's house to question her. She tells them that after she left her shop around 4 she went to her mother's house to think about her future. She had been involved with Nicholas but broke up, After interviewing her they are satisfied with her alibi.
Violet has invited lots of artists and celebrity to her affair. One is actor, George Pitt whose wife, Finley is Brady's ex-wife. Brady, owner of a restaurant is Charlotte's boyfriend. While Meaghan is at Charlotte's shop Glida Gill, owner of a jewelry store comes and tells them that Ziggy has been arrested. The police had found many of Nicholas's paintings in his house in a closet.
There is so much that people are saying and woman involved with and about Nicholas, etc. that I can't describe everything. I will leave this to the reader to find out. Meaghan finds out that she was not the only woman that he was involved with. Charlotte finds out that Hunter's niece, Kaylene Hamilton was involved with Nicholas and was found dead supposedly a suicide. Charlotte has Ulani Kamake, reporter for The Carmel Pine Cone to look into her death. While picking some pots up from the pottery store Charlotte finds out that Renee has been called by Detective Summer to go to Payton's house as he was found dead. Payton left a note that he was embezzling money from his work. Had a gambling problem and was in debt. Both brother's are now dead.
So much is going on towards the end of the story that builds up to an exciting climax involving Charlotte, Meaghan and Hunter. Charlotte goes to the foundation tea. The party was a huge success. Nicholas and Hunter's paintings were sold along with all the other artists painting. Brady catered the party. After he comes to Charlotte's house for a light supper. They both said that they had more business now then they could have. Fiona tells Charlotte that there is a portal on the bottom of a tree in the yard. Fiona goes to the portal and it lights up and she goes into the portal.
I really enjoyed this story. It leaves the reader wondering about Fiona after she goes into the portal. What next adventure will Charlotte and her friends get into. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for this ARC.
I know I am in the minority here but, I just didn't care for this one. In fact, after reading the first three I think I am done with the series. Just can't get into the whole fairies helping solve murders theme. And I really don't feel any connection to any of the characters. Just not my cup of tea.
A Flicker of Doubt is the fourth book in Daryl Gerber Woods A Fairy Garden mystery series. This series is one of my favorites, it is an absolute joy to read, this book was no exception, and might just be the best one yet. Obviously you’re going to have to do some suspending of belief, because we are talking about fairies being real beings, and living amongst humans, but the fairy characters are so well written, it becomes easy to imagine them flittering around, sprinkling fairy dust, doing their best to assist their people. The mystery was very well done, and centered on Courtney’s best friend Meghan’s ex boyfriends murder. There were some great twists and turns and a red herring or two, that kept me guessing right up to the reveal. Throughout the book, there are some very yummy dishes served, and their recipes are all included at the end of the book, including gluten free versions as well!
Looking forward to the next book, and another adventure with Courtney and Fiona and friends.
I was provided a ARC which I voluntarily reviewed.
This is the fourth book in the Fairy Garden Mystery series. Even though I’ve read the prior book in the series, I was thankful for the list of characters at the front of the book because there are a lot of them to keep track of. The main character, Courtney Kelly, is my favorite. She runs a fairy garden center which sells everything customers need to build their own fairy garden and also offers classes for beginners or anyone wanting additional ideas. The parts of the book devoted to describing these gardens are my favorite part of this series. The murder mystery is also interesting with a victim who has given many people a motive to want to see him dead. Courtney sometimes comes on a little strong for an amateur sleuth, but she is persistent and good at getting information from witnesses and suspects.
The book is well-written and I appreciate the excerpts from poems about fairies at the beginning of each chapter. I like the realistic aspects of the series and also enjoy the bit of magic that the fairies bring. I was surprised at how much the fairies are involved in the investigations, but this is the perfect cozy for those who appreciate a bit of whimsy with their sleuthing.
I received an advance copy of this ebook at no cost from NetGalley and Kensington Books, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
I've grown to love this series. I mean, who wouldn't want to be friends with the fairies? Top it off with interesting characters that ring true, whimiscal fairy gardens, a community of artsy folks, friendship, and, yes, romance, and Gerber has crafted a winner with this series. This one was an intriguing mix of whimsy with a dose of not just reality but murder.
Who killed the unlikable artist Nicholas, main character Courtney's friend Meaghan's ex-flame? He certainly wasn't very likable, not to mention he seems to have left a string of admirers behind him as he moved about. That does not include his brother, however. He turned up with the warning that Nicholas needs to pay him what is owed "or else". Uh, oh, could he have killed his own brother? What sort of family ties could create that scenario? Maybe it was the other artist that Nicholas slugged in the face? Or the art teacher who shows up exhibiting a bit too much interest in Nicholas, all while singing his praises? Or maybe that talented singer/guitar maker who also seems inticed by Nicholas? Seems like any number of people might have had a reason for thinking Nicholas was better off dead.
I thoroughly enjoyed trying to figure out whodunit. It was also fun to see the growth in Courtney's fairy Fiona. Did you know there are four basic classifications of fairies? Fiona is a guardian fairy to Courtney but also of the nurturer classification. The basic fairy types are air, water, and woodland, Fiona being one of the latter. There. There's your fairy class for the day. Don't despair if you can't see fairies. I can't but, heck, neither can Courtney's boyfriend Brady. We keep trying, though.
Bottom line, a whimsical story that mixes reality and the enchanted world. Thanks #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks- #KensingtonCozies for allowing me to drop into Courtney's world again. With that teaser about Fiona, I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit.
Courtney has been hired to create fairy gardens for a local philanthropic event, and she’s busier than ever. When the ex-boyfriend of Meghan, her best friend, is murdered and the police direct their attention on Meghan’s business partner, Courtney decides to ask a few questions of her own.
This is the fourth book in this series, and I have really come to enjoy my visits to Carmel-by-the-Sea. I have never been there, but the descriptions provided in these books makes me want to check it out some day. The recurring characters are beginning to feel like old friends, and I’d love to meet Pixie, Courtney’s ragdoll cat. I don’t think I’d see Fiona or any of the other fairies, but I hope I would be receptive enough to sense their presence :)
The murder victim in this book wasn’t very well-liked, so there were quite a few suspects to consider. My list kept changing as the story progressed, but I didn’t figure out whodunnit until just before it was revealed in the book. I like that Courtney shared the information she found with local law enforcement, and that she didn’t knowingly put herself in danger. That seems to be happening more often in cozy mysteries lately, which is a trend I hope continues.
I look forward to reading the next book in this series to see what happens next with Courtney, Meghan, and the fairies around Carmel.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is such a fun series to read. When I find out a new book in the series to to be released I can’t wait to lose myself in the story. One of my favorite characters is Fiona, she has spunk. Following her journey to earn her wings and get back in the good graces of the Fairy Queen has been amusing. Courtney and the other human characters are likable and relatable. The mystery is well-crafted blending the magical elements with the suspenseful. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I recommend this book and the rest of the series to cozy mystery readers who also enjoy a little magic or fantasy in their story.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I have not been by anyone.
This is a whimsical cozy mystery that is bound to make a believer out of anyone. Courtney loves working in her shop, creating beautiful fairy gardens, offering classes and so much more. The ending had me choking back tears and I can't wait to see what will happen next.
Courtney has been hired to make some fairy gardens for an upcoming event. An art show will be part of the event hosting several local talents and their creations. One of the main artists happens to be her best friends ex-boyfriend who turned out to be a jerk. Courtney is shocked when the ex is found dead not long after arguing with Meaghan. There are quite a few suspects to look at but the cops sedm to be.focusing on Meaghan. Courtney wants to help her best friend so she starts looking into things with the help.of her fairy friend Fiona. Follow along as the two delve into suspects in hopes of.coming up with the name of a killer. Will the two clear their friends name or will she end up behind bars. This is a wonderfully enchanting cozy mystery series. It brings its characters to life in a magical way. It has brought my love of fairy gardens to life. I even added fairy doors last year after reading a previous book from the series. I look forward to seeing what magic happens next!
Courtney and her fairy companion, Fiona, are some of the most compelling characters in a cozy mystery. Add the fairy gardens that Courtney creates for her clients and supporting characters that could be mains all on their own, and you have a cozy book and series that readers of all types, ages, and preferences can get behind. A Flicker of a Doubt will have readers cheering on the sidelines.
When Violet hires Courtney to build fairy gardens for her upcoming tea and art show, they never expected murder to be the main attraction. When one of the artists is found murdered in Meagan’s backyard and the police zero in on her business partner, Courtney sets out o prove that the victim was killed by someone else. But suspects are hard to nail down, as the victim had several people in his life that might have been happy to bash his head in. The evidence leads Courtney down a garden path of misdirection and lands her in the killer's sight.
The “Fairy Garden Mystery” series is a fan favorite with readers who enjoy paranormal-style books., and those who aren’t into the genre. In this case, Courtney is put into a spot that has her working harder than ever. Dealing with a killer is one thing, but dealing with her father, who doesn’t believe in her fairy, almost sends her over the edge. There are plenty of twists and turns throughout this story and enough mystery to keep readers guessing until the end. Of course, Fiona progresses with her fairy training, and Courtney continues to create her gardens, but there is something in this book that has the feel of a change coming to the characters and the series, and although change can be hard, sometimes, it also gives us more enjoyment than we thought possible.
The creativity of this author to weave the fairy world into the real world is always fun, but this book is that and more. Fiona, the fairy, is really coming into her own and seeing her abilities expand and grow is fun as always. However, the mystery aspect of this book is even more intense this time. I love how realistic the characters are, but even more how well crafted the plot is. I absolutely can't wait to visit this cast of characters again soon!
I was excited to return to Carmel for another mysterious adventure with Courtney, Fiona, Brady, Meaghan, and the others. I liked the progression of Courtney and Brady's relationship alongside the main murder mystery plot. The victim, Nicholas, definitely made himself unlikable, and seemed to have issues with so many people that there was no shortage of suspects and red herrings. When Meaghan's partner at the art gallery, Ziggy, is suspected since he discovered the body, Courtney knows she has to help clear his name...even if that gets Detective Summers in a tizzy.
I really liked how the murder mystery played out. I had a suspicion of the guilty party, but I wasn't 100% due to the author's excellent plotting. I absolutely loved the fairy gardens and the magical moments involving the fairies. It brings a special fun touch to the series and is something that stands out from other cozies. I found Courtney really seemed to settle into who she is and what she wants in life. She has grown as a character since the last book, and I love seeing that development across a series.
One of my favorite things about this series is the author's ability to plot an intricate murder mystery while also incorporating subplots for Courtney's relationships with her friends and family, fun times at the shop making fairy gardens, and the fairy side of things. I'm fully engaged when I read one of Daryl Wood Gerber's Fairy Garden Mystery books and am always left wanting more to the story. I cannot wait for the next one!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am sharing my honest review. My thoughts are my own and not influenced in any way.
While this story still felt like a cozy mystery, there were a few elements that seemed edgier that you don't typically come across in cozies. I don't want to give anything away, but there are some details about the crime and additional crimes that are more on-the-page than typical cozies. Not anything that would turn me away from it, as I thoroughly enjoy this series. But I just wanted to mention that!
A Flicker of a Doubt Earns 5/5 Fairy Wings … Engaging & Clever Fun!
Courtney Kelly, owner of Open Your Imagination, is an artist when it comes to fairy gardens, and for a Mother’s Day event, she’s been commissioned by Violet Vickers, a wealthy art patron, to add fairy gardens to the landscaping displays along with several centerpieces. The foundation tea and art show event is being held at by Violet Vickers‘ estate, and will highlight many local artist including Vickers’ protégé, Nicholas Buley. The problem is trifold: (1) Nic has a very abrasive manner evidenced by several outbursts, (2) he is Courtney’s friend Meaghan Brownie’s ex-boyfriend with whom she argued, and (3) he’s been found dead with circumstances pointing to Meaghan. Of course, Courtney knows Meaghan and her business partner Ziggy couldn’t possibly have resorted to murder, so she and her “fairy” friend, Fiona, are compelled to investigate.
Daryl Wood Gerber’s fourth book in her Fairy Garden Mystery series is again a delightful read with loads of fairy designs, fairy friends, and fairly well hidden clues and perilous predicaments to keep me totally engaged. Daryl ensures my interest with a clever mystery, several plausible avenues to explore, ample twists to keep me guessing, and a final reveal that is satisfying and supported by the details. The mystical element is light, no juvenile hocus-pocus, and doesn’t overpower the realism I expect. It is a fascinating series and this book is one of the best. Daryl Wood Gerber can always be counted on to include several mouthwatering recipes and among them a few that are gluten-free. From cookies to cakes to muffins and a meat loaf pie, there’s everything for your own afternoon tea!
Disclosure: I received an ARC from Kensington thru NetGalley. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
I have read the first two books of the series and if you follow me you know I liked the series but then decided it wasn’t for me. I was given the chance to read book four and I have to say I LOVED it. I honestly believe the reason I had a hard time with the series previously was what was happening in my life. The first book was release barely two months after the loss of my mama and until recently I had lost the magic in my own life. I couldn’t see or enjoy the idea of fairies and such. I am so glad I have this series another chance. Now I must go back and read book three.
This story was sad though. It centers around physical abuse and how it affects your entire life and those around you. Read with caution if your sensitive to abuse.
I am a little anxious to see how the next book opens. There is a surprise with Fiona at the end and now I’m left wondering.
Entertaining and whimsical are the words that come to my mind after reading Daryl Wood Gerber’s A Flick of a Doubt (A Fairy Garden Mystery).
Even though this is book four in the series I was able to follow the story and it’s past pretty well considering I have not read the other books in the series. The author was kind enough to include a list of who’s who at the beginning of the book which I was grateful for. The story was fun to read, non-stop action, with a clever who-dun-it. I liked the protagonist, Courtney, as well as many of the other characters. They were likable and easily relatable too. I adored the fairy aspect of the book. What fun to imagine fairies living among us. Courtney’s fairy, Fiona, was a hoot. Ms. Gerber is an excellent writer, and she knows how to captivate her reader. This book was no exception. Bonus: tons of recipes are included at the end of the book.
My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions expressed are my own.
I enjoyed this book and am always glad to catch up with Cortney, Fiona and the rest of the residents of Carmel. After reading this book I think it would be fun to create my own fairy garden. I like how the other residents of the town come to Courtney for advice and help. She has a knack for finding out who the killer is and looking at different angles than the police. I look forward to these books.
I really enjoy this series. Its a fun fast read and it makes long for a world that fairies are real. I love Fiona and wish I had one of my one. the Main character in the series is likeable and relatable. I have only ready 2 books in this series but will be catching up with all of them shortly.
Daryl Wood Gerber is one of those authors whose writing style has the ability to capture your interest from page one and pull you into the story in such a way that you do not want to put the book down until you are finished. You become invested in the lives of the characters and view them as good friends.
A Flicker of a Doubt captures you from the beginning, re-acquainting the reader with the world of Courtney Kelly, which includes not only her friends and family, but numerous delightful fairies. When you open page one you immediately feel that you are hanging out with Courtney, her righteous fairy Fiona, and Pixie her cat, making fairy gardens, sipping tea and enjoying the good life in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
The fourth book in the series finds Courtney making a slew of fairy gardens for an art show being held at a local estate. Unfortunately, Courtney also becomes involved in the latest murder, trying to identify who has killed best friend Meaghan’s abusive ex-boyfriend. The story becomes complicated as more and more information is revealed about Courtney’s ex-boyfriend Nicolas and his various relationships with a variety of people from Carmel-by-the-Sea to Arizona where he briefly lived. These revelations greatly expand the list of potential suspects and Courtney has quite a time narrowing the list. In the end she is successful and the murderer is revealed.
All of the characters are vivid and well-developed, the setting comes to life and the story line flows smoothly, keeping the reader engaged with many twists and turns. By the time you finish the story you find yourself looking for fairy portals and fairies, wishing that you had your own Fiona or one of the other fairies in the story for friends.
I started reading this series at book 3 and had no difficulty picking up the characters and the storyline. I would however recommend reading at least one prior book in the series before reading book 4 – there are many, many people to keep track of! That being said, the author provides a complete list of characters – people, animals and fairies – at the start of the book for reference. This book, the others in the series, and Ms. Wood Gerber’s other series are all delightful to read. I highly recommend A Flicker of Doubt and will very much look forward to the next in the series.
This was the fourth book in the Fairy Garden mystery series. It takes place in the town of Carmel by the Sea. The town has many fairies that are living in it and they are viewed as a normal way of life. Some of the people believe in them and can see them while others are not able to see them. Courtney Kelly is one of the believers that runs a business making fairy gardens. She has her own fairy by the name of Fiona. Courtney runs a business of making fairy gardens. Her best friend Meaghan Brownie is the owner of "Flair Art Gallery".
Courtney's friend Meaghan's abusive ex-boyfriend (Nicholas Buley) returns to town and is found murdered in front of Meaghan's home. Courtney feels like she needs to "help" the investigation along after her friend Meaghan's business partner, Ziggy, is arrested. Courtney knows deep down that there is no way that he could have conducted this murder. Being that Fiona is Courtney's fairy she also helps to shed some light on this murder situation. The author does a great job of making it look like it could be Ziggy, Meaghan, Charlotte, and a few other people. Whom do you think is the murderer? By the end of the story you will have a long list of suspects.
It has been a delight to read this book. Could you imagine living in a small town where fairies are hanging out just like regular people? What a fun and creative little town that would be. I think the author does a fabulous job of bringing this all together. The characters are a lot of fun to read about and follow throughout the book. There are many different plot twists that completely keep your interest. I am excited to see what is next in this series. As an added bonus their are some yummy sounding recipes included that were referenced in the book. I can't wait to try some of these recipes myself.
A Flicker of a Doubt is the fourth instalment in Daryl Wood Gerber's 'A Fairy Garden Mystery' series. I've also read a few of the author's books from her 'Cookbook Nook Mystery series'.
In this fabulous cosy mystery, Courtney Kelly owns a magical fairy garden shop and tearoom, called Open Your Imagination, based in the small town of Carmel, California. She has been able to see the fairies from a very young age but there are some skeptics who don't have her ability. She teaches garden design and sells everything from fairy figurines to tinkling wind chimes and it's the perfect place for her book club teas.
The writing style of Daryl Wood Gerber continues to impress and even with the plethora of cast members, the story is easy to follow. Narrator, Courtney is a great character and I love her determination and her single-mindedness. The whodunit aspect was great with plenty of opportunities for the most diligent of armchair detectives to play along. Every clue led to a revelation and I really liked the way things were all wrapped up. This tremendously enchanting novel was a hit for me and I am looking forward to reading book five. If you adore a fantastic cosy mystery with a strong dose of magical realism, don't miss out on A Flicker of a Doubt.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Kensington Books via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
When Meghan’s ex returns to town, she is determine not to let him back into her personal life, even if she still represents him as an artist. When he is found murdered in Meghan’s yard, Meghan’s business partner is arrested for the deed. Courtney knows there are other suspects and that one of them killed the artist, so she puts on her sleuthing hat and begins asking questions. While Courtney tells herself she’s not investigating, she manages to find out things that are helpful to the police. But will Courtney get too close and anger the killer enough to silence her one and for all?
I adore this series, but then again I adore all of the author’s works, as she has a knack for writing a solid mystery and creating protagonists and characters that are not just likable, they’re lovable, along with their fur babies! Each entry has a solid whodunit with enough red herrings and suspects to keep you busy guessing until the final reveal. But this series? I’m gonna have to say the fairies are the best part! You’ll be under their spell too!
Courtney and Fiona are back solving a murder, this time in the local arts scene. While preparing for a fundraiser/art show, one of the local artists is murdered. Courtney and friends must figure out who killed him to save their friends from being falsely accused.
As usual, Daryl does a fantastic job with the characters and location. I have been watching the characters themselves, and their relationships grow as the Fairy Garden Mystery series has gone on. I really feel like, if I ever visited Carmel-on-the-Sea, I would be able to navigate parts of town with no problem. It is vivid and vital.
The plot is well done and very tight. There are plenty of suspects to choose from, and you even end up going back to some of them as you continue reading. It is a nice, light mystery that takes you out of the every day and gives you some magic.
Carmel by the Sea sounds literally like a magical place to live. The names of the businesses even sound magical - Sweet Treats and Flair and Your Imagination Fairy Garden Shop. Courtney Kelly owns Your Imagination Fairy Garden Shop. She is getting ready to work on a large project of creating charming fairy gardens for the local theater foundation when her friend, Meaghan, bursts onto the scene. She is not happy with her ex-boyfriend, Nicolas. She laments her woes to Courtney. Later when Nicolas' body is found on Meaghan's lawn, the suspects start piling up. Daryl Wood Gerber provides plenty of suspects to choose from, some very obvious, while others are not so obvious. The characters in this book are interesting to say the least. You have Fiona the fairy who is also a sleuthing fairy. Some can see her and some cannot. I also adored the description of Pixie, the Ragdoll cat.
This cozy mystery has it all including murder, whimsical characters, cute pets, a little humor mixed in and a wonderful location to solve mysteries. You can use your imagination to enter into the quaint little community of Carmel by the Sea and enjoy witty characters all while trying to solve a mysterious death.
Thank you to Kensington Books and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is such a fun series to read. Courtney has become a favorite character. She is strong willed, kind, and yet very human and still very likable. This time around, the murder victim was not a friend but someone Courtney didn’t like very much. However being her best friends ex and him being murdered outside her house makes this of high interest to her. This is book four in the series, and while they can stand alone, they get better as they go. I love meeting new fairies, and seeing the relationships between the people who live in Carmel-by-the-Sea grow and evolve. This one has a lot of interaction with Courtney and her father as they collaborate on a garden project for a charity art show. We also get to see Brady and Courtney deal with some interesting people from his past. Fiona comes out with some very intriguing news as well. Overall a great read, and my favorite kind. A nice escape from reality. It kept me guessing and had a satisfying ending. I am very much looking forward to book five and seeing what Courtney and Fiona get up to next. I did receive this book with the hopes I would read and review it, but all opinions are genuine and mine alone.
