I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
For brevity’s sake, I would recommend this book to lovers of dark fantasy with bully romance leanings. The relationships in this book are obviously fantasized and should not be considered an accurate representation of BDSM (specifically D/s) culture. There are no safe words in this book, and ZJB doesn’t pull her punches.
I’d give it 4.5 stars if I could. Here’s why:
I read the first two books in this series and loved the first one. The second followed a character that made me uncomfortable with his frequent aggressive outbursts, but because I enjoyed the second book’s FMC, I stuck with it and more than willingly dived into this third book.
Things I liked:
*Leo and Liv’s love story. These two are so sweet, it makes my teeth hurt.
*Talia’s and Adante’s character and relationship development. There are serious changes in both characters and in their relationship that occur throughout the book which made it very rewarding in the end.
*A well-rounded plot with fun twists that kept me engaged the entire time.
*Consistent and interesting minor characters that are easy to love.
*Excellent world-building and easy-to-follow descriptions that portray a unique setting where magic, tech, and cultures collide.
*ZJB’s ability to make two first person POVs feel and sound distinctive. Both female leads had their own individual strengths that shined throughout this book. This is a testament to the author’s rising talent, and I can’t wait to see where she goes next.
*The sex. Obviously.
Things where I found room for growth:
*A few minor threads (Reynauld and Pia) that could have been tightened up a bit more.
*Overuse of the word “The” to start sentences. Once I noticed it, I just couldn't stop seeing it.
Things I didn’t like:
*The first few Talia chapters were so viscerally off-putting that I almost put the book down right then. I was relieved when Liv’s chapters came up.
*Adante. Many readers adore him. I don’t. Though he tries hard to redeem himself in the end, I found him too petulant and abusive in those early chapters to balance the scales.
*Lack of safe words and communication in what’s clearly a D/s scenario. Leo and Liv were closer to a true D/s dynamic than Adante/Talia, and even they never discussed safe words or hard/soft limits.
Okay, I get it. It’s dark fantasy, not reality. But if this was someone’s introduction to BDSM, it would send the wrong message about a community that is already stigmatized enough.
Overall, it was an enjoyable story, and I was really on the fence about that 5th star.
