I really enjoyed this short book. Lovely storytelling about a man who is ready for love and marriage to a woman he has known for a decade. It is his best friend's sister and is a very low angst story about growing up and realizing you want to have companionship and children. The courtship is short as both are familiar with each other, but Lillian wants to know she is valued as an individual in a time where a woman is not encouraged to be independent. There is very steamy sex prior to marriage.
The plot is rather vague as to the time period so it could easily have been from Regency to the end of the Victorian era as some aspects were a bit modern. It is written with an eye towards todays woman regarding consent and independence. I found this could easily have been written for current times. I rate it 3.75*

I really liked this book. The ending had me grinning with its slight cliffhanger (not related to the couple in this book, but regarding the couple of Book 2).

Kenley Alcott lives alone at 24 after his mother's death. He wishes to get married to be less lonely and the only woman he imagines possibly marrying is his best friend's older sister. So he sends her a drunken letter, and that is the premise of our book.

Rather than having a big conflict throughout, this was just a nice, steamy read of two people who had known each other for a decade getting to know each other more and falling in love. It did the friends to lover trope well, and I liked how the heroine was older. I thought it was an interesting choice that Lillian (heroine) never was attracted to Kenley before he sent that letter, which made her start thinking of him in a new light. Lillian was also a very likable heroine.

And what I really liked was that, unlike so many other heroes, Kenley actually wanted to get married! He was pretty romantic & soft-hearted.

I think what I liked most about this book is that, unlike too many other books I've read recently, I felt that the hero & heroine were a good match together. They had personalities that complemented each other well.

I'm looking forward to the release of Book 2!

I liked it. Family friends to lovers. He’s liked her for years and finally decided to pursue her. She’s older and his best friend’s sister. They do get in some sex before they marry… it didn’t put me off as much as it can in historical romance because the power dynamics were okay and she wasn’t in danger.

As much as I enjoyed the plot and characters, the historical accuracy leaves much to be desired. It’s a fun story set in a semi-historical time period. Tho I’m not entirely sure which historical time period. There are some items that make me think the author hasn’t done their research.

1. What historical timeframe is this? Is her waist cinched? That would be VERY late regency. Also, where is her maid?

2. You post the banns in your home parish. You wouldn’t wait until town.

3. The season starts during the winter, when parliament sits. No tulips are growing that early. Maybe hot house flowers? Maybe? Seems unlikely tho.

4. She would not be called Lady Evercott. Does an earls daughter even get the lady title at all? If anything, it would be Lady Lillian.

5. Very confused about the year. They act as if the Rosetta Stone is new. But it was in the British museum in 1802. And in that time, there were as no wearing of corsets for fashionable women that would cinch their waist in. Especially not for “waist training”.

Lady Lillian Evercott receives a letter from her brother's best friend Kenley Alcott. A little drunk, he expresses his admiration and proposes. Lillian is surprised by the letter. When he arrives for a visit with her, her brother and their mother, he can hardly wait to hear her answer. Lillian is a little skeptical after all these years. He's never acknowledged his interest. At twenty-seven, she made her peace of being a spinster. If she says yes to his proposal, he must fulfill her one request to prove himself. Kenley is a sweetheart. How could anyone turn him down. What a way to fall in love! A new author and her first book in the series.

After Kenley Alcott decides a wife is the only solution to his loneliness problem there is only woman he considers to be perfect for the role - Lillian Evercott. But marrying Lillian has certain obstacles. She’s older than him, the daughter of an earl and she just happens to be Kenley’s best friend’s sister. Sending her a drunken proposal letter changes everything between them. Lillian had never considered Kenley as a possible suitor and has just convinced her family to let her set up her own house and live her life however she wants to. When Kenley arrives at the Evercott house sparks fly between them. Before the season is over they both need to decide if their potential relationship has the strength to thrive or lock them into an unhappy marriage.

A Letter to a Lady is a fantastic historical romance novel with engaging characters and fun romance tropes. I am always fond of reading romance novels where the heroine is older than the hero - it’s surprisingly rare especially when the female character isn’t a widow. Lillian is lovely to follow as we learn that she’s single by choice and extremely picky about any suitors she has. I liked the dynamic between the Evercott siblings and Kinley. You can tell that Kinley and Matthew have shared many years of friendship between them. This book had many steamy scenes which really showed off Lillian and Kinley’s passion for each other. And communication wasn’t a problem for the pair.

This isn’t a novel which thrives on drama and external forces to cause angst between the leading couple. The misunderstandings are cleared up within a page or two and there’s no big dramaful moments drawing the reader out of the wonderful romance bubble the author created. It’s just a book about the love and how the relationship evolves from a sort of friendship to so much more. I loved that about this book. Lillian is very open about how she feels and so is Kenley. They have a great partnership as they navigate their feelings. Things which may become big issues for couples in other historical romance books don’t really matter here. This all made it an easy and fun story to read.

One thing which I feel I should mention is this book did feel a little too modern at times. The rules of the day aren’t observed as strictly as I may have felt they should. And I understand that’s probably a choice so Lillian and Kenley’s relationship could flourish without having all the scrutiny of chaperones or pressures of society’s rules upon them. Some of the language is jarringly modern and there are a few anachronisms (eg. kilometres didn’t exist in England until over a hundred years after the book is set). But despite these things I felt fully invested in the romance.

I enjoyed A Letter to a Lady and am so pleased to see that it’s only the first book in a series (the epilogue was a brilliant cliffhanger of sorts!) because I would love to spend more time with these characters. The romance is delightful with plenty of wonderfully steamy scenes to enjoy. If you’re a stickler for the time period perhaps give it a miss but for fans of a great story and a romance you can fall in love with and low on the angst - I recommend this book.

The h is aging out of the marriage mart and will only marry on her terms. The younger H is in love with her, he's shy and brave enough to be honest with her. I liked the idea of them discussing their marriage but it ended up being her agenda with her making demands or no marriage. It didn't feel right for the setting, steamy but not at all sweet.

Will they grab by the hands the second chance offered to them …

This book was a surprise, and I confess it was the cover that caught my eyes first, then the blurb.
After I thought it would be the usual forbidden romance between the heroine and her brother’s best friend.
But it was much more than that and quite different from what I expected.
The author skillfully portrays her heroes as reliable persons, they are fleshy, full blooded and lively.
People you who would want as friends.
Their conversations were down-to-earth which made it easy to connect with them, not the stuffy usual talks between haughty and conceited peers.
Kenley and Lillian are mature enough to express their feelings, doubts and fears. They let nothing and no one to stand between, addressing immediately what could tear a breach between them.

Kenley’s quest for a wife began with his will to end his loneliness, and he does not prevaricate about looking for any miss, he knows who he wants to walk by his side.
And even if his letter was written in a drunken state and should never have been sent, it expressed genuinely what he has felt for Lillian for years. But never thought he would get the chance to court her due to their age difference, until now.
Lillian is the one caught by surprise, she has always viewed Kenley as her brother’s friend, the boy who taunted her when they were younger.
But the letter makes her rethink everything about their friendship, quite unsettling when she was certain she was on the right path having gained the promise to be able to set her own household after this last season on the marriage mart.

I loved this romance, Lillian and Kenley are straightforward , they want to ascertain that as a couple they are made for married life together and also clear any doubts between them before the big jump. They are helped by the fact they are childhood friends and probably that Lillian is older than Kenley, else it would have been much more difficult for them to get so much alone time as conventions would never have allowed it.
There is few to no angst as they never let things to fester, they discuss and bicker at time but it is to help them, Kenley is open minded about Lillian’s view of marriage, and she demands more from him than a convenient union, or she would have already married.
The author grants a lovely full of steam tale of a friendship evolving to a deeper feeling because they choose to take the chance of it.

Now I’m curious about Lillian’s brother, Matthew.

On the anniversary of his mother's death, Kenley Alcott ends up drowning his sorrows in alcohol and reflects that to end his loneliness, the right person would be Lillian Evercott, the older sister of his best friend and who he has admired since the teenage years.

He then writes a letter to her declaring his feelings and his desire to marry her, which he thought was not possible in the past.

The letter, which he doesn't remember writing, will shake Lillian's beliefs, who at twenty-seven years old, saw the possibility of having a marriage for love as unlikely and the way she sees Kenley.

It is much easier for the couple to experience the physical aspects of the relationship (and the book has moments of adult content) than to express their true feelings as they have to struggle with situations such as the fact that Kenley is younger and doesn't have a peerage, Lillian thinks she's "old" to someone who finds her desirable or who might be in love with her and even financial matters.

The contents of the letter will lead Lillian and Kenley to review concepts about themselves and the relationship of friendship and familiarity that has been built by them over the years.
As a reader, I found myself interested in following the human aspect of the characters, with their insecurities, desires and feelings.

Eagerly awaiting the next book.

First, he had to figure out how to woo her. Then they had to come to an understanding about what marriage meant to them before they got engaged. And then, they confessed they love each other.

There is something funny about how confused a guy gets when he can’t figure what he did to anger the woman.

I enjoyed this short rom com like story.

I received a copy of this from BookSprout and this is my freely given opinion.

I was quite pleasantly surprised by this short little story. I thought it would be a sweet little novella, but it actually packs a bigger punch than I expected.

Kenley Alcott is a gentleman of 24 who is all alone, and after falling drunk after the anniversary of his mother's death, writes a letter to the only woman he has held feelings for, proposing marriage, the older sister of his best friend, Lillian.

Lillian, at the age of 27, is firmly on the shelf and has convinced her brother and mother to allow her to access her dowry and live an independent spinster life, after one last season. She has not found a man to her liking after many seasons and doesn't want to go through the trouble of any more seasons. This was her choice... she had refused many offers over the years.

Kenley first met Lillian 10 years previously, being a friend of her younger brother, Matthew. He was 14 and had a young boy's infatuation with her, that grew over the years. Lillian probably never saw him as anything other than her brother's friend, until his letter arrived, and it opened her eyes to Kenley as a man, and she allows him to court her.

This was quite a sweet story, and I like that it was a bit friends to lovers, and a bit older woman/younger man. I also like that it was not an issue of Lillian being on the shelf and choosing Kenley because she was neglected or had no more other choices. There was also a bit of spice too in Kenley's courting of Lillian, and Lillian seemed to want to ensure that she was making the right choice, now that she could choose freedom and independence as well.

The story also ends on a bit of an interesting cliffhanger - not about Kenley and Lillian. They have their HEA, but about her brother. Especially intriguing as there was no hint of Matthew and anyone else in this first book.

4.25 stars out of 5.

Lillian and Kenley: The Proposal . . .

Kenley Alcott is ready to get married. He is lonely and he thinks about the one woman that matters to him, his best friend Matthew’s older sister. When he has had too much to drink one night, trying to rally his courage, he writes a letter to propose to her. What he doesn’t know is that Lillian Evercott has gotten her family’s agreement that she does not have to marry. Instead she will set up on her own in a small cottage and will take care of herself. So when she completes one more Season, she will classify herself as spinster and start her new life. Will Kenley’s letter change her mind? Does she have any feelings for him? Or is she now too set on her plans to take a chance?

I thoroughly loved this story. The characters were wonderful and the story line kept me smiling all the way. Lillian is only 3 years older than Kenley, so it really wasn’t a significant age difference. But their story was cute and just what I needed. (And I love the book's cover!)

Title: Letter to a Lady
Author: MP Harding

⭐⭐⭐⭐

~
Kenley Alcott has decided he is in need of a wife. Not for all the conventional reasons, no, for the simple fact that he is lonely. And he will only settle for one woman - Lillian Evercott.

Lillian Evercott has just succeeded in convincing her family to set het up in a cottage of her own when the season ends. She is officially on the shelf with no prospects.

That is of course until she receives a drunken proposal letter from Mr Alcott. And when he arrives at their estate with the obvious intention to court her? She knows she's in trouble.
~

This book was such a relaxing and enjoyable read. There were so many fun moments in this book that had me giggling and the chemistry between Kenley and Lillian was just perfection.

Kenley has been in love with Lillian since his thirteenth year and truly he is finally ready to make a move. He is clear about his intentions from the start and there were no cloak and dagger scheming in this book. Both were very upfront about their feelings and talked through their problems.

In all honesty it kind of read like a novella, because there was also no real conflict in the book. Any that were discovered were easily settled within pages.

~ It was really such a simple but enjoyable read and I can definitely recommend it for when you're in between books ~

A Letter to a Lady is the first in her M P Harding's All in a London Season series and appears to be her first book. While the premise of the story was good, the execution needed work.

At 24, Kenley Alcott decides a remedy for loneliness is a wife. He settles on his best friend's older sister, Lady Lillian Evercott. At 27, she has resigned herself to be a spinster and live life the way she wants.

The story was unusual in that Kenley is young but so earnest in his regard for Lillian, who is attracted to Kenley but is afraid to act on it.

The writing was choppy and in need of editing - for instance, referring to those working your land as "tenets" rather than "tenants" and noting that Lillian's curves were voluminous!

As it is Harding's first book, I would give the author another chance.

Lillian is jaded and worn out by the social twirl of the ton. Kenley, her younger brother’s best friend realizes he is lonely and Lillian is the woman for him. He needs the majority of the book to prove his sincerity to her. After being sought out by seemingly endless Gentlemen for her wealth, or connections, or status, or beauty she is not easily convinced that Kenley could possibly like her for herself.

Although Lillian’s hesitancy is normal and perhaps wise, it often comes across as unfeeling as her warring emotions pull her towards and away from their relationship. Kenley is quite naive at times thinking his love her Lillian is all that is needed him to win her hand.

Favorite scene involves Kenley and his future mother in law hiding from his best friend.

A drunk dial for the Victorian Era...

Have you ever gotten drunk and acted on your urges that you suppress at every other moment. Well, this sweet story of Kenley and Lillian who have been friends, best friends thought they would forever be in "the friend zone." Thank heavens M.P. Harding has created this story for us all to live vicariously through the old maid getting her true love and helping a charming character get his happy ending. Well done & looking forward to the next book.

What a delightful story! Lillian is Kenley’s best friend’s older sister, and he has adored her for ten years. Deep in his cups, Kenley sends Lillian a letter proposing marriage. When he arrives for his annual two week visit, he and Lillian embark on a courtship/engagement conversation full of physical and emotional discovery. This story is sweet, steamy and oh so satisfying. The dialogue is spot on and the whole story is genuine and easily imaginable. Loved it!.

3.5 stars. This book was refreshing - no major obstacles, just a lovely story of taking a chance on love built from friendship. Lillian, FMC, was a woman who knew her own mind and wouldn't settle, despite society’s views at the time. Cheers Lillian!

A book were the hero is way better than the heroine. Frankly the heroine annoyed me a lot. Her behavior is often times not what you expect from a historical regency book. Despite having 13 proposals she is supremely insecure and the poor hero sets about to rest those insecurities...
