Division Chief Seraphine Thomas knows that progress isn’t made without sacrifices. Their side has lost people, and the cost to her own life is sometimes too high. But now that the political climate for supes shifts widely back the wrong way, everyone is scrambling to secure the protections supes desperately need. It’s simply impossible to play a fair game when the other side cheats. Unfortunately, that’s not the only thing weighing on her, and she’s being pulled in too many directions at once. Something the new division chief of the regular office tries to take advantage of constantly while lying he’s responsible for her work. Plus, she’s having trouble settling with the bomber case she recently worked. There are too many similarities between her and the bomber and that pulls her back into her past in a way she knows she can’t ignore. At least she’s taking some time off to attend the next APA event and putting her needs first by driving there. Visiting Vegas a second time couldn’t possibly be as crazy as the first time, right?
Seraphine Thomas is a crime series filled with Chicago attitude and a strong heroine that pushes what most would think a female lead capable of, along with the heat being involved with several men brings while trying to figure out what she wants.
*This book is part of a series and cannot be read as a standalone. Like all my books, this is not light and fluffy and includes dark themes and events some may find triggering. Reader discretion is advised.
Erin is a born Chicagoan who decided to state hop a bit, given she works from home. She currently resides in Georgia with her pup, Lord Vader Flynn. With an eclectic and addictive personality, there isn’t much that doesn’t interest her or she won’t pour herself into if it catches her fancy. She has always been interested in the darker aspects of life and mythologies—especially vampires, shifters, the occult, and anything paranormal.
To date, she has published more paranormal books than she can keep up with the characters for, in different genres with dedicated readers who await each release to her numerous series under any of the three Flynn names she writes.
While authors are certainly free to use their books to soapbox about their opinions, I still didn't like the excessive political opining about the 2016 US election that I had also mentioned in my review of the previous book Woman in Demand. Although I am fine with using the US as a setting in a fictional book, I prefer more truly fantastical casts that don't refer to real world people and current events to make a point. Taking cheap stabs at existing political figures took me out of my zone and just made me annoyed at our current reality when I read fantasy to intentionally escape it.
The FMC Seraphine/Sera had a lot of "I'm working so hard but no one appreciates me" soliloquies that got rather repetitive, but once she got that all off her chest and there was more action, I found it much more enjoyable to read about the brutal justified take-downs against the stupid and evil people she came across that I expected from a book by the author.
The amount of men that Sera was involved with was a little overwhelming, and it was hard for me to remember the details of all their relationships when I read the previous books quite a while ago. A few didn't even really show up in the book and were off-screen with other jobs, which was a little unsatisfying.
However, overall, I know what I'm getting into with a Seraphine Thomas book after 13+ books, and they're a nice escape from reality (mostly).
I enjoyed this book as I have the Seraphine Thomas books. The problem I have the false history of political ideas. I know the presidents are not named but first twelve books are of Obama. The thirteenth book is with Trump. The story line with the presidents completely bogus and a one-eighty from reality.
Review of the Seraphine Thomas Series by Erin Flynn (Books 1–18) ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Overall)
I’ve officially read all 18 books in the Seraphine Thomas series - yes, all of them - so you don’t have to (but maybe you’ll want to). I’m a longtime fan of Erin Flynn’s writing. Her stories are creative, emotionally rich, and often addictive. There's always at least one character per series you end up rooting for, and her talent for immersive world-building is undeniable.
That said, my experience with this series has been a bit of a rollercoaster. Let’s break it down honestly - but respectfully.
🔥 The Positives: Compelling Worldbuilding: The supernatural FBI + polyamorous twist is unlike most in the genre. Think Forever meets Castle with a Vampire Diaries vibe.
Long-Term Character Arcs: The series spans a wide timeline and shows dedication to character growth (even if not always in a direction I enjoyed).
Addictive Early Books: Books 1–7 had me hooked. They had humor, high-stakes emotional drama, and solid pacing. These earned a solid 3.5/5 stars from me.
😬 Mixed Feelings & Constructive Critique: 1. Tone and Authorial Voice While the author’s writing style is generally engaging, I personally found some of the commentary in the closing author’s notes and certain narrative choices to feel more personal or opinionated than expected in fiction. I completely understand the need to address issues like piracy, but I believe there might be more neutral or inclusive ways to communicate those messages.
2. Relationship Complexity vs. Clarity This isn’t a typical “Why Choose” or Reverse Harem setup. It’s a deeply layered polyandrous dynamic - messy, intricate, and sometimes emotionally chaotic. If you're looking for straightforward bonding arcs, be prepared: the relationship development gets incredibly convoluted. Personally, I found the shifting dynamics between mates, sirened partners, consorts, and friends-with-benefits confusing as the series progressed. A glossary or relationship map might be helpful in future installments.
3. Character Fatigue By Book 18, I found myself struggling to connect with many of the characters - especially the main character, Sera. She starts off as a resilient, sharp, and likable FMC, but over time, her decisions and relationship management felt inconsistent or frustrating. The push-pull dynamic in her personal life, paired with very little progress in her supernatural education even 18 books in, made it difficult for me to continue rooting for her.
Many love interests were introduced with big emotional weight, only to fade into the background or disappear altogether. Some characters who were well-developed and emotionally resonant (like Dain or Tristan) seemed to get less closure or fair treatment than others who felt more peripheral. In contrast, some relationships dragged on without significant development or payoff.
4. Pacing & Structure Books 8–18 dropped to a 2.5/5 rating for me. The pacing slowed, and more focus seemed to shift toward commentary and expanding the cast rather than continuing the central storyline. Political and social themes started to feel more prominent than the core plot, which I found distracting from the fictional narrative I was invested in.
🧍♀️Sera Thomas (FMC): Early-series Sera was fantastic: witty, brave, emotionally complex, and vulnerable. I loved her journey through the early books. But as the series continued, her indecision, emotional volatility, and seeming lack of introspection made it harder to sympathize with her. She often reacted rather than reflected, and by Book 18, she felt less like a hero and more like a character stuck in loops.
💔 On the MMCs: Too many to list fully, but here are some key points:
Tristan: Felt unfairly treated by both the narrative and Sera. He brought a lot to the story emotionally and deserved more.
Dain: A standout for me. Loyal, strong, and emotionally available. Frustratingly underappreciated by Sera.
Brian, Riley, Hagan/Reagan: Relationships with these characters didn’t feel satisfying or necessary by the end.
Noah, Axel, Eugene, Jason: Struggled to leave a lasting impression. Some started strong but faded, others never quite clicked.
Carter: Felt like his storyline was mishandled. A simple conversation would have solved a lot.
Ari, Virgil, Lucca, etc.: Either forgotten or sidelined. At 18 books in, I’m struggling to remember who’s still important and who isn’t.
⚠️ Final Thoughts: This series started with a bang but has become increasingly complex - sometimes at the expense of clarity, pacing, and emotional payoff. I’d still recommend it to readers who enjoy dark paranormal romance with poly themes, complex emotions, and an ongoing world that spans dozens of characters.
But for me, the series may have reached its natural peak. I’m unsure whether I’ll continue with future books unless there’s a notable shift in focus and tone. Still, Erin Flynn’s creativity and dedication to her characters is commendable, and I hope future installments bring some much-needed resolution to long-standing arcs.
TL;DR: Started strong with a bold and complex heroine in a unique supernatural world. Became bloated with characters and unresolved plot threads. A frustrating but ambitious series worth reading - if you have patience.
Growing Alpha is the thirteenth book in the Seraphine Thomas series by Erin R. Flynn.
I really enjoyed this book. I have been waiting, practically with bated breath, for Sera and Axel to more firmly confirm their feelings for each other. And to delve deeper into his backstory. Seeing how far he has progressed since we first met him, and to learn the horrors he has faced through his long life, has added a new appreciation for this character for me. But Axel will always be a favorite character of mine. I mean, a cuddly tiger shifter? Yes, please.
This new trip to Vegas while almost equally as corrupt and trying as her first was by far more entertaining. I think I enjoyed this book more because there weren't as many overly sexualized scenes. But did get to delve into the continuing corruption of the law enforcement throughout the US. Which for this literary world is sad, given the US is considered progressive for supe treatment.
I love her chosen family, found in the arms of the Dorcus ruling shifter line. I adore Eva and Alena's protective and loving treatment. But, I truly enjoyed meeting Zeno's younger brother. He reminded me of Sera with how honest and to the point he was. I believe they have similar moral compasses and personalities. While he doesn't face the childhood, and darkness she fights within herself, he has tasted a certain air of neglect and I think that can lead to people being more understanding of others pain.
That scene where all of the women of her pack gathered to greet the women Sera recently saved when they arrived was so strong. I was surprised that it was such a short footnote, but so poignant in those few words.
I'm seriously wondering how many books it will take for this series to reach a satisfying conclusion. There is still so much that Sera needs to resolve before it will feel as if she has succeeded and can settle into a future she deserves... At just this point in time she still has to finish taking down Murray, there's the Bolivian plan, other issues in South America, this new and evil president, and the very obvious corruption still with FBI so probably also more law enforcement offices, and then the myriad of criminals she will have to catch, and then the victims and overlooked that she will fight to save....
I love all of Erin's books. The Seraphine Thomas series was my first series from this author and I couldn't get enough. Every time I finish one of her books I can't wait for the next. However, the last few I have read have left me feeling sad and a little hopeless. Nothing against Erin, because the mark of an excellent author is to make you feel and she definitely does that. I was ready for something more uplifting, and she delivered. I finished this book wanting the next like usual, and feeling so hopeful. Yes there were some sad things that happened but those feelings won't transfer to the next book which helps me personally, emotionally. I'm not one of those readers that pays attention to editing unless it throws me off, and there were a couple times I had to go back and reread something, which I'm sure she is aware of now so I won't linger on it. I will say it's not enough to throw off the groove and doesn't hurt the story so to me, it's not a big deal. Also, I'm going to try super vague because I don't want to be spoilery, there was a scene at the end of the book where she welcomes some new pack members that made me bawl like a baby and I loved it. I am here for all the happy tears. Truly, I think this is one of her best books to date.
This entire series is one of the best I've ever read. It's a series that deserves to be read again and again. The complexity of the main character Serafine, known as Sera to her friends, had come so far since she was injured on the job. She has overcome a great number of challenges and setbacks. Her character is written with a great amount of sensitivity and strength. Erin R. Flynn has done a regardless job in growing this character, her world, and her relationships throughout the supernatural world. This book, however... This book gets 4 stars because it needs quite a bit of editing. The Great American Road Trip, and reason for needing to make it, was an interesting twist on things.
So sorry that I reached the end of another wonderful book in the series. I read it as slow as I possibly could while devouring it in a day. I loved this continuation of the series and can only wish for more. I’m not sure but I don’t think I can wait an entire year for the next book in the series but I will wait for as long as I need to. Thirteen and a 1/2 books in to the series and I still can’t wait for each new release. Erin is such a great writer and can really pull you in to a story. I feel like I live in Chicago and can’t wait to visit Siren’s Kiss.
Erin R Flynn is a talented author with a fascinating mind. I love the concepts she implements in her books that could truly work in the real world. I like the bluntness of Sera (yours will always be bigger than mine cause I don't have one,or you don't have to like me etc) I'm of the same opinion of who cares, let's work together for a better tomorrow. I hate identity politics because people focus to much on skin color and sexual preference when we are all the same. We are people first. We shouldn't be letting our leaders separate and divide us and instead help with actual problems. Sera does all that and more
Sera is how I first found Erin r Flynn. I love all her series but sera Thomas holds a special place in my heart. And this book was really good. It had all the points I like about this series. Personal, professional, and pack. Sera is working on herself and learning to put her needs first. I was thrilled axel was the star of her men this time. I love him and liked having a break from Brian. Not that I dislike brian he’s just been featured in a lot of recent books and liked the break. They all go to Vegas for the convention and run into problems along the way. Sera handles everything she can as only alpha can. Definitely recommend!
So glad to have a new Seraphine Thomas book. I have to admit that I was a little bit blah with the last book. I didn't think it was up to the quality of the previous books so I am happy to say this book brought back the desire to keep reading to find out what happens next. Looking forward to the next and as a reader from outside of the US the political aspect of the story felt very realistic from the media coverage we were seeing at the time. Keep writing Erin and I'II keep buying it doesn't matter which series.
After reading the first 5 chapters of this book, after binge reading the other 12, I felt as if I missed the book that never was.
It feels as if the author failed to reread her previous books and follow along the story line as she ended 2 years prior to this.
I did not finish this book because I dislike the disconnected feeling I get when an author jumps so drastically yet tries to pretend it’s the same time line.
The first 12 books I rated as a 5 because I adored them. This book is out of sync and not worth the time or money.
I only recently came across this author when reading the Artemis series and totally fell in love with her writing so I decided to try the seraphine Thomas series out and dayum I'm so glad I did. The characters are fantastic along with the storyline but it's so detailed without getting boring and lost the way some books can go. I'd definitely recommend Erin's book she has just jumped to my top ten authors and that says a lot as I've read over 5000 books and still going. Happy reading.
I knew I loved the Seraphine Thomas books and it’s been a while since I’ve already read them and I’m absolutely in love with all of her dudes I have not one a complaint with any of them. I seriously love love love her mom and grandma and of course the amazing queen Leila She’s my all-time favorite. I honestly love I Artemis University but I’m pretty sure this series is quickly becoming my favourite
I had been waiting for so long, it seems , I had almost forgotten about it. I’m so happy the series is going strong. Sera has had such a rough time of it I would love to see her get her life and relationships out of the rough and into smoother waters. Love Erin R Flynn books. Her female main characters are all strong , and survivors of all the crap that life throws at them.
I like reading about a good person working through bad stuff. I love the rants to be honest as well. I so want to be able to get out so much and have it make sense. Her characters allow me to have hope that stuff is seen and can be dealt with. Fantasy allows me to look at things outside of the real, to see it for itself without the biases that blur our vision.
I can’t stop reading any book that Erin R Flynn writes and always wanting more. You feel so much for all of the characters. Each book is better and better. I am on pins and needles for more of each book. The Dr. Kelly Murphy stories, The Enchantress stories, and the other series of stories I’m would like to read what happens next. Really I can’t say enough of how much I enjoy each series of stories and can’t get enough. I recommend all of Erin R Flynn books.
Ok so I have read all 13 books and I love KU! But I plan to buy the entire series and I can’t wait for more!! I love the love of the adopted daughter and mother Relation ship Alena has with Sera. I love how Sera wants to try and save everyone. I saved my review for the last one, bc I wanted to make sure I knew the whole story, which come to find out I don’t!! And I love that!! Can’t wait for what ever the author has next for this amazing woman!!
I really love how this book flowed. it was almost like a refresher which was sorely needed since the previous book was a little while ago. So happy to see Sera’s journey continue and her relationships finally going well. I also liked how this book touches more on some of the side characters I’d forgot about. Still, if another book is in the works some more intense and exciting scenes would definitely be a plus. Otherwise it was a great read and very well written.
Even when they should know better. A little bit of politics, a little bit of clean up, and, typical idiots. Sera is an example that circumstances don't have to dictate. Getting back up to 'fight' again is the point. My father always said ' Don't let the bastards win'. Aka get back into the fight of life. I love how Sera makes people accountable. It's not someone else's fault; we are all responsible.
Honestly I've missed Sera so much, I've been dying for this book to come and it has definitely been worth the wait! I'm a new mum so reading this has been my me time and it is absolutely perfect and everything I wanted. Although I really do want to see more of Dain!
This book, while had serious topics and events, was honestly a breath of fresh air. The book ended a much lighter note with a lot of self acceptance and love. Sera has really put in the work. We see a lot of Axel in this book and we learn a lot about him. I like him so much more now that there is some depth to his character.
Waited a while for this installment . Missed the boys and where they are now in growth. Still wish Bryan was sent curbside his ability for loyalty without his ego stepping on her toes. Would like to see one relationship without drama. Like to see where her absorbed magic byline comes up. Love the author and invested in your characters 🤗
Great to settle in with Sera and the crew on new adventures. Sera was busy with multiple challenges to face. A hectic trip that was filled with trouble and danger led to an interesting read. Can't wait to see what paths are taken in the next book. Hopefully it will be released soon.
Sera is one of my top favorite characters of all times!! I love to hear more about here any time. I love the next steps she has taken with her men, and that even a siren can take it slow with her harem. I love how she is also open about mental health for everyone. This makes her one I have to reread a lot!!!
I started this series as I enjoy the genre but I was a bit worried that the storylines would suffer - 13 books in a series is huge. I have to say that I have not been disappointed by any of the books. The stories are all interesting, the characters amazing and this author is enormously skilled in her weaving of tales. Read and enjoy - you won't be disappointed.
A bit drawn out in some parts Good series to read overall A lot of errors such as they were going to take over Bolivia at first but then at the end of the book it changed to Ecuador. There were some scenes that were never explained just left in a cliff hanger with no resolution
I love the Seraphine Thomas books but wish Erin R. Flynn would take out all the political nonsense out. I personally get enough of that stuff everyday. When I read, I want that book to transport me to another world. I love the story line and the characters but again just wish the word jabs and political stuff was taken out and put somewhere else.
Poor Sera. She is pulled in so many directions and the bad guys just keep popping up.. But then again she has a whole group of hot shifters to make it all better, after she kicks the bad guys where it hurts, or you know, rips their hearts out. Literally.
Why did I keep reading this series?? Its more of the same, boo hoo why is everyone not more enlightened like me? Why is everyone hurting my feelings. Everyone is hurting her feelings and no-one listens. On top of that the politics of the author are seriously bleeding through and it RUINS the story for me couldn't even complete this one, will not be reading the next book!!!!
There's a lot to like about a generous good hearted brilliant female obtaining power like a queen. Author does a good job of describing how difficult it is. Gives us reasons to believe in the court she builds around herself. The fantasy of finding a healthy powerful supportive family is near to my heart as well.
