The venerable high school trip is off and running and Izumi is determined to make this one the best ever, since he was sick for his other one. Wasn’t he? Despite his incredibly bad luck, this time he’s planned for every contingency. But when it all starts to go sideways, it’ll take more than just Shikimori to save this day!

School trips are so incredibly ubiquitous in manga that it truly takes something special to make one seem interesting and not just an excuse for the mangaka to take a well-deserved vacation to get pictures for research. This one is nearly there, but not quite.

Saruogi’s raison d’être is quickly explained - he exists to be the opposite to Izumi. Saruogi keeps a wall between himself and others for his own sake, whereas Izumi does it for the sake of others. Lest I seem especially clever, the story straight up underlines this.

But the end result has been the same, especially once we get the revelation of what really happened with Izumi’s last school trip. It further explains why he’s so hellbent on making it work.

To that end, he believes he’s figured on every eventuality, but this is truly the definition of life happening when you’re busy making plans and a lot of the story revolves around the gang trying to fix it. That leads to the other big theme of this storyline, which is that your real friends just accept you for who you are.

It’s not a bad peg to hang the story on, although after Hachimitsu proves to be a dowsing rod for restaurants it turns out to be promising a lot more silly than it delivers. Almost all the big laughs are from Hachimitsu’s antics, come to think of it.

The emotional core of this ends up being the way that Saruogi comes into his own and it continues to illustrate how hard it can be when you’re the new guy and also the ways in which you don’t always have to settle for what life has thrown at you.

Combined with plumbing the depths of Izumi’s despair, there’s not a lot of room left for Shikimori and Izumi to dote on one another, which is kind of a bummer since they’re the core of this series.

As the manga has gone on, the cast has really come more and to the fore, certainly, but they function best as the spice rather than the main course. This isn’t a bad story, far from it, but it’s certainly not the best we’ve seen here.

Some of the moments are very sweet, don’t get me wrong, including a lovely two page spread of some perfect photorealistic scenery that comes after a big shift in plans that serves to drive home that rolling with the punches can pay off just as well as excessive planning.

It’s just hard not to miss the focus on Shikimori and Izumi, honestly, especially when there’s a little bit of alone time between the two that’s absolutely perfect and just stands to remind the audience of what the story’s real appeal is.

4 stars - not a bad story in the least, even if it doesn’t do as much as it could with the premise or change in scenery. Still a good series, but it’s impossible to deny that it’s been better too.

Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Vol. 10 (My Kindle Review)

The group’s Kyoto trip faces a few challenges such as Izumi in charge of their visit and a lost scarf, but thankfully it becomes a real fun and memorable time and we even see Saruogi opening up to them all. A (100%/Outstanding)

Damn, this was a seriously emotional volume. I had tears welling up damn near every chapter and was hit in the feels more than once. I'm glad we finally got some backstory on how Izumi feels about his misfortune and really see how it affects him. Yes, we know that he considers himself a burden to others and is constantly apologizing for his misfortune, but to see him mentally struggle with the ramifications of his misfortune was much needed and most appreciated. The rest of the volume was great, I love this merry group of weirdos, and the art was great as always. Another fun volume, hope we can keep the momentum rollin'!

Konnichiwa to all, readers 🌸

Today I bring you the review of the tenth volume of "Shikimori is Not Just a Cutie." With that said, let's get started:

💕The volume begins with the premise that Izumi's bad luck frustrates their plans in Gion. The inability to dine at the chosen restaurants leads the group to improvise. However, their change of route to another temple is interrupted by a delay in the trains. Faced with this situation, they decide to take a bus, giving them the opportunity to do some sightseeing.

💕Almost at the beginning of their visit to the temple, Izumi realizes he has lost the scarf that Shikimori gave him. This setback, which Saruogi resolves by recovering the item, reveals his past and his desire to distance himself from others to avoid spreading his bad luck. However, the group decides not to abandon Izumi and joins in the search for the scarf.

On her part, Shikimori shows maturity by seeing the Christmas gift as a symbol of happiness, not discord. This gesture enhances the climax when she offers him her scarf.

💕In the final chapters, the group wraps up their day off with a stroll through the chosen temple, capturing photos with the city in the background.

Throughout this volume, Saruogi confronts his fears and insecurities about friendship, which leads to significant character development, while humorous situations arise in the interactions of the group of friends.

The epilogue of this journey concludes with Shikimori and Izumi purchasing matching souvenirs in a romantic store. On the train ride back, the students relive their adventure by looking at the photos they captured.

🌸Conclusion: This tenth volume concludes the school trip while maintaining the essence of the protagonist. Despite the emotional limitations imposed by circumstances, their magic and growth are evident in how they face adversities.

Rating: 5🌸
