Nothing was supposed to wake half dragon, half human Lucius from his Deep Sleep. Nothing. And yet something, or rather someone has. The unexpectedly attractive human not only touched him. She kissed him. Now Lucius is awake, and more powerful than he has ever been in his 4,000 years of existence. And once he finds out who led her to his cave, he’ll deal with his 300 years of hunger…
College professor Raine Carson spent her life obsessed with myths and legends. And now she’s woken one up. Only, Lucius is nothing like anything she’s ever seen or read about in her history books. Because this man is part sexy badass and part terrifying… monster. Yet she wants him with a hunger like nothing she’s ever felt before.
Lucius used to be part of the Forgotten Brotherhood—a ruthless group of paranormal assassins. Now he’s unsure if his former Brothers are their allies…or enemies. All he knows is that someone is hunting him, and Raine is just as tangled up in this mess as he is. And he’ll protect her—even if it means unleashing his Dragon and all of its power.
Once upon a time N.J. had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years.
One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel and life would never be the same.
N.J. Walters is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.
Ancient Desire is book five in the Forgotten Brotherhood series by N.J. Walters. I adore this series and even more, I adore the covers of the books! This book was just a little bit different than the others in that it seemed a little more light hearted. The banter between our two main characters made me smile. But there is also plenty of steam and suspense as the brotherhood tries to again defend a brother from an enemy.
“Something or someone was waking. Trouble was coming.”
Lucius, is a drakon, half dragon, half human. He is four thousand years old. He was part of the Forgotten Brotherhood, a band of paranormal assassins that only kill the worst of the worst in the paranormal world. But three hundred years ago, he had given up and went into a deep sleep which he shouldn’t have been able to be woken up from. But then “she” came into the cave.
Raine Carson was a university teacher of myths and legends. When she is contacted about receiving a grant and told about a beautiful dragon statue deep in a cave, she can’t wait to document it. But things didn’t go as planned and she finds herself trapped in the cave with a dragon that isn’t a statue at all!
Raine had no idea that the subjects she taught her students about were real. That the myths she read about in her books walked among them! She was both terrified and intrigued with this beautiful dragon she found herself trapped with. And Lucius doesn’t know what to make of this woman who should be cowering in the corner but instead is confronting him. Who brought these two together? And why? Now it is his job to keep her safe.
Both Lucius and Raine feel the pull to each other and it doesn’t take them long to give in to it. But they also need to figure out who is after them. They don’t know who to trust including Lucius’s friends in the Brotherhood. Do they still stand behind him or are they against him?
“He’d lay waste to the world to keep her safe.”
Keeping Raine safe is a full time job since time and time again she literally throws herself into the middle of things when Lucius tells her to stay back. And every time, he falls deeper for her. And Raine can’t imagine what this sexy man/drakon sees in her, an accident prone teacher.
This really was fun. Raine was so brave and definitely kept Lucius on his toes, or claws, whichever form he was in! And poor Lucius definitely can’t seem to control his protectiveness over Raine, even when confronting the angry archangel Gabriel. Raine and Lucius seem to have plenty of enemies but as they fight to stay alive, their bond strengthens.
We didn’t get to see as many of the other characters in this book except Maccus and Morrigan. Also Sven from the previous book makes an appearance and a new character, Rivka. Could this be a hint at what might be to come in the future? If so, I’m all in! I also want to mention that if you enjoy meeting Lucius, Ms. Walters has another entire series in the drakon world that I loved, Blood of the Drakon.
“I have seen the seven wonders of the ancient world. You are the eighth. No, you are the wonder of wonders.”
another decent addition to the forgotten brotherhood series. again, NJW continues to do a good job at creating a series that is full of uniquely independent stories all set within the same world. this latest installment compliments the other books nicely and adds to the previous developments of the overall story arc.
and while i found the concept of drakons to be the most exciting subject since reading about fallen angels in book #1, im finding that im not really suited for the romance of these books. i noticed this with the last few, but im personally struggling to get behind the whole insta-love between the characters, and i feel like this latest installment is the worst offender for it. i mean, i get that lust and attraction can be immediate, and thats fine, but they are literally saying “i love you” within a day of meeting each other. and just using the bond as an excuse for a connection doesnt work unless its backed up with evidence/world-building the reader can see.
so not really my thing. so much so that, after five books, i may need to part ways with this series. but there is no denying that these books can fill any quick paranormal need.
Raine gets a grant from the Angel Foundation to study a dragon statue that was found in a cave. It's in perfect condition and she just can't believe her luck. Raine is a college professor who is intrigued by myths and legends like dragons so she's so excited to see the dragon statue. But her guide to the cave betrays her, setting off an explosion that seals off the entrance of the cave, trapping her inside with the dragon statue. What she doesn't know is once she touches the statue, the dragon awakens but doesn't let her know for a while.
Lucius is a Drakon. His father was a dragon and his mother was a human. He can transform into both dragon and human forms. But he was so fed up with humans, Dragons and Drakons that he decided to go to sleep, not expecting to wake up again. So when this little human wakes him up from his deep sleep, he's not sure he's going to help her once she is trapped inside the cave with him. But the longer she is there, the more determination he sees from her, the more he feels drawn to help her.
Raine tries to get out of the cave on her own and she talks to herself a lot, which drove Lucius crazy at first. He watches her, listens to the conversations she has with herself and finally let's her know he's real. What a shock that was.
Once they're out of the cave they have to figure out why they wanted her dead or in the cave with him and how do they even know what he is. They get in touch with Maccus who is his friend and leader of The Brotherhood. The meeting doesn't go well though and Lucius and Raine find themselves in danger a few times. But the pull they feel for one another is undeniable so it was so much fun to watch them fall head over heels for each other.
I loved seeing some of the other characters from previous books make an appearance as well as meet new ones. Finally finding out what was going on and why was fun and all I can say is, this was another great installment in the series. This has quickly become one of my all time favorite series to read. Each book can be read a standalone but the characters backstories and how they all fit together will make more sense if you read this in order.
Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another enjoyable read in N.J. Walters’s Forgotten Brotherhood series! Half dragon, half human, Lucius never expected to wake from the eternal slumber he put himself in when he became disenchanted with the human world. But when college professor Raine becomes trapped in a cave with him, she inadvertently wakes Lucius in dragon form and changes both of their lives forever.
Raine and Lucius are great characters, and I enjoyed their story. Raine is so fun and chatty, and she talks to herself as a form of encouragement. Her endless chatter is something Lucius isn’t used to. He’s more reserved and intense than Raine, but she softens him a bit. Both characters learn life-altering news. Raine leanrs that there is a whole supernatural world she didn’t know about, and Lucius must become reacclimated with a world he hasn’t been in for 300 years. It’s interesting to see how they both react to and deal with everything. And their chemistry is great! They have great banter and communication! Plus, their romance has reverse Sleeping Beauty vibes and the fated mates trope, which I really enjoyed.
I also liked the mystery behind why Raine is sent into Lucius’s cave. Did someone know that she and only she could wake him up? And how was her guide involved? Raine and Lucius work together to get to the bottom of the mystery, and they even get help from another in the Forgotten Brotherhood. If you read the first books in the series, you’ll be happy to see a few familiar faces!
This is the fifth standalone book in the series, and it is a fun read for readers who enjoy sexy paranormal romance. Thanks to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
There's something about the Forgotten Brotherhood series that really gets me going!
Raine is a dreamer, obsessed with myths and legends, without believing them to be true. So when she's trapped in a cave with a stone dragon, she talks to it—never expecting it to respond.
Lucius entered the Deep Sleep of his kind over 300 years ago, done with humankind and their never-ending hunt to decimate his people. He never imagined that a mere human female would be the only person to wake him up, much less be his mate.
"I have seen the seven wonders of the ancient world... You are the eighth. No, you are the wonder of wonders."
I loved just about everything about this book. From Raine's chattiness, Lucius's initial wariness and inevitable humility, the guest appearances from past characters, the action scenes, the attempts by too many people trying to tear the Brotherhood apart, and even the unresolved suspense angle that I hope continues in the next book, it was all incredibly entertaining.
I loved seeing more of Maccus. He was my first beloved hero from this author and he will always be my favorite. And with Sven making a huge appearance with a giant tease for a plot to come, I'm hoping his story is next.
My Review: Ancient Desire by N.J. Walters was my first exposure to the Forgotten Brotherhood series. Unfortunately, I didn't love book five. (To each his own, right?)
What I Liked: - Presenting a pseudo, reverse "Sleeping Beauty" concept was genius. Having a drakon awaken from a Deep Sleep because of a kiss had amazing appeal. - The mysterious air surrounding why R was able to arouse L from his prolonged slumber was intriguing. - I really liked the idea that R was an academian who was on a quest of sorts. - L being half and half was a huge draw. (And that body art was a winner!)
What I Did Not Like or Had Trouble With: - I thought this couple lacked true chemistry. They came across as awkward. At certain points, their connections were amateurish. - After hearing R speak, it was incredibly hard to take her seriously as a professor. From the beginning, she seemed unbelievable. Her language was, at times, immature. - Even with his advanced capacity to learn and to adapt to his environment, L's almost immediate comprehension and mastery over the language of the times (inclusive of slang and popularized colloquial speech), in comparison to when he went into the cave to sleep, was not convincing. The same applies to his driving and his use of tech.
My Final Say: This was a challenging read for me. I found myself picking the book up and putting it down often. I had to rally to keep pushing through it, if I'm to be honest. What should have been right up my alley was so not.
Rating: 2/5 Recommend: +/- - Audience: A Series: Yes
Appreciation is extended to Entangled Publishing and to NetGalley, who provided access to this work in exchange for an honest review. The words I have shared are my own and have not been influenced by the aforementioned in any way.
DNF at 25%. This is probably a "it's not you, it's me" type of situation, but I am not connecting with the writing style nor with the characters. So, one could ask themselves, what's the point in continuing to read the book then? I found I was starting to do everything except reading so I'm calling it quits.
To be completely honest, although I get why Raine (the FMC) talking out loud to herself furthers the plot, I find it slightly annoying so I am not particularly fond of her. I don't care much about the MMC either, and their interactions have caused me second hand embarrassment a few times now as they just seem forced and not very natural. I cringed when Lucius thought "mine!" even though I'm pretty certain it's setting up a fated mates trope, which is my favorite.
Anyway, it's clearly not a match, which is disappointing because I was looking forward to reading my first dragon shifter book and frankly, the blurb showed a lot of potential!
What I did like about it, was the fantasy aspect. I liked that Lucius was a "drakon" which was visible through his tattoos that were golden and pink, and that he had pink eyes. It definitely made it unique (at least compared to the books I've read so far).
* I received an advanced reading copy from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Ancient Desire by N.J. Walters is book five in her Forgotten Brotherhood series.
Lucius was tired of trying to live up to, or down to, the drakon legends, so he went to sleep…for three hundred years. College professor, Raine Carson, is used to teaching history not becoming part of it. She kissed him; he woke up. And the rest, as they say, is history.
N.J. Walters continues to impress with her latest installment to the series. These main characters were just as well-conceived and well-developed as others in the series, but I was less enthralled by them, initially, though the storyline is still engaging. The build up was slower in this novel than in previous ones, but the ending was still satisfying. The world-building continues to impress. There is some explicit content, but it’s storyline appropriate. I finally “got” the connection I was looking for and found Ancient Desire to be a 3.5 rounded to 4 out of 5 star read. I recommend it to all readers of paranormal romance.
My thanks to Entangled Publishing, LLC, Entangled Amara, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. However, the opinions expressed in this review are 100% mine and mine alone.
Dr. Raine Carson is a researcher of myths and legends. She discovers a stone statue of a dragon deep in a cave in the Smoky Mountains. Raine is injured in an explosion and stuck in the cave. Much to her surprise, the dragon statue comes to life, revealing a large "drakon" with rose gold scales and pink eyes. The drakon is actually Lucius, a multi-thousand year old shifter who has been sleeping for almost 300 years.
I DNF'd this one unfortunately. There were too many continuity errors that really stuck out. Within minutes of waking, Lucius asks Raine what year it is (2022) and realizes he's been sleeping for nearly 300 years. But a couple sentences later, he makes a reference to Bram Stoker's "Dracula," which was published in 1897. If he was asleep for almost 300 years in a cave, how would he known about the published story of Dracula? Raine's constant talking to herself also got very annoying. It seemed like an easy way for the author to describe a character's feelings about a situation without thorough explanation. With some editing this one could be a lot better.
While I enjoyed the characters, I felt it was too obvious what was to come.
I wanted to get emotional and feel my heart beat faster, but unfortunately I found it too simple and predictable. I rolled my eyes at some of the "fun parts".
Unfortunately I couldn't get into the mood of the book.
It just didn't reach what I expected. But it's still a good read.
Raine was sent to explore a cave and what she finds is out of this world. She warm and honest unlike what he has learned to mistrust.
Honestly, if she waited for Lucius to ask, she’d be an old lady before they found out anything.
Lucius has been in a deep sleep for a long time. Many things have changed but this crazy human woman brings out his protective side.
“I would never risk you.” It appeared she not only understood that, but also wasn’t afraid to use it.
Raine is spunky and Lucius is serious. Opposites do attract. I’m so glad to have another book in this series even if it is someone we don’t know. I fell totally in love with this couple. I’m also super excited that we’ll be getting another story. Hopefully not to far in the future.
I really thought I would like this. Unfortunately, it was a big disappointment. The first 50% I was really pleased with, but a romance novel with lackluster sex scenes just isn’t worth the trouble. I seriously felt nothing reading these. The first spicy scene or two I was like okay maybe this is just a slow burn but no. Telling the reader that the sex is amazing without actually writing a scene gets annoying real quick. Additionally, I’m not sure if it’s a formatting issue but there are a ton of places where a space is missing and the words run together. A few times is understandable for an ARC or even a new release, but after the first 20% it was almost every other page. I had trouble feeling anything for the characters after they revealed the mating trope which is sad because I absolutely love mating bonds done well, but this became instalove really quickly. Raine didn’t have any personality really. It’s pretty unfortunate that we get these dropped backstory lines at the beginning about having been hurt before and understanding how it can be to be discriminated/hated and a mention about foster care but then literally nothing else. Dropping a single line does not constitute character development. Why bother putting it in at all if it’s not going anywhere. Honestly for a romance novel about fierce assassins it’s various fantasy/paranormal powers, this book was bland. Not a good time.
I have mixed feelings about this one like I did the last. I loved the first two books but these last two have fallen flat for me and I find myself skimming. The insta-love felt more like she woke him so she must be his one. I thought her loner background would be more of a connection to the destiny of their connection. Other reviewers thought Raine was hilarious and I enjoyed her at first in the cave but her (self admitted) trait of rambling and talking wore on me. With the previous book I didn’t take to the heroine either. I love whenever the previous characters join up with the newbies and this time it’s Makkus but only Morrigan in the background with little to say or do (Raine did most of the talking). I did like Lucius being a new type of member of the brotherhood, a drakon - dragon father, human mother. I’ll keep up with the next but my favorite parts are the mix of Asher, Cassie (and her dad) and the others being more involved. Maybe banter between Asher and Raine was a missed opportunity.
An advanced reader copy of this book was provided by the author/publisher with no expectations and in no way influences my review.
I know that these are standalone romances but I typically really don’t like jumping into the middle of a series. However, the author did a brilliant job of making this book accessible even if you hadn’t read the previous books without having it feel like you were reading a summary of the books thus far.
This book was an interesting and fun take on dragon shifters and one of my favorite troupes (fate/mate).
The book started a little slow with a bit of repetition but once it got going into the actual storyline it was hard to put down.
ARC provided by NetGalley and Entangled Publishing LLC in exchange for fair and honest review.
Wow n j waters did it agin.. What a totally amazing book!! I just absolutely loved it from beginning to end. Okay, so I am absolutely in LOVE with this series. loved every character in this book, had me sucked in. I was at the edge of my seat when they were all fighting, chemistry, The storyline just went on in such a way that kept me on the edge of my seat. So, so, much happens. I didnt want it to end.
This was a great story. Predictable, sure. Questions answered, nope. Spicy romance? Yep. Laughs and awww shucks moments? Yes and yes. Will definitely read more by this author.
Four stars instead of five simply for predictability and a little slowness/repetition here and there.
If you're a fan of insta-love and mythical creatures, you'll enjoy this read. It's very formulaic, but an easy read. If you don't like weak heroines who fall for the strong love interest who always saves them, you might not like this book.
The fifth book in the Forgotten Brotherhood, Ancient Desires, is a fascinating read. Half dragon, half human Lucius and College professor Raine Carson are powerful characters and along with the engaging, dynamic storyline made this a great read for me.
I was looking forward to this new installment and this one just didn’t do it for me. Super fated mates… which I don’t always mind, but in this case there isn’t really anything between them other than the inexplicable desire. I just found myself not caring.
I rounded up because that's just how much I love Maccus. This book started out really good. These two worked really well together for me and it was believable learning about both of them as they got closer. And I was super excited when the new couple finally went to meet up with Maccus. But afterwards, things kind of went down hill for me. There was just an overwhelming amount of sappiness after, with "I love you" being thrown around left and right and way too much talk of feelings. Ugh, feelings. Honestly, it was kind of boring. Speaking of the word love. The number of times these two thought of them having sex as "making love" was ridiculous. You do not make love with someone that you literally just met and know nothing about because you do not, in fact, love them. So stop calling it that.
Raine is a college professor that is kind of obsessed with mythical creatures. When word gets to her that a huge dragon statue has been found in pristine condition inside a hidden cave, she jumps at the chance to check it out. A grant from The Angel Foundation makes it so that she can take a year off of work to write a book about it, and they even send her with a guide. The statue is even more fantastic than she could have ever hoped for and she is beyond excited. Of course, it's all too good to be true. Betrayed by her guide, she finds herself trapped in the cave and wondering why they would go thru all of this to kill her there. But soon she finds herself not as alone as she thought when she somehow wakes the sleeping dragon.
Lucius is a drakon. Born between a dragon and a human woman, he can take either form. Having lived thousands of years, he had had enough of being an outcast of his own people and hunted by the humans. So he had decided to enter the deep sleep with no desire to wake again. Until this tiny human comes along and does the impossible. Now he has to decide if he will let her die, or reveal himself to her. Despite his better judgement, he can't just lay there and do nothing. Giving Raine the fright of her life. Well, so far anyway.
When these two escape the cave, they decide that the best course of action is to work together to try and figure out why Raine was sent into the cave and if she was sent there to die, or if they knew she was the key waking Lucius. And it seems that somebody is hell bent on killing these two, even showing up at Raine's home. Really, there's only so much that they can do on their own and that's when it's time to try and reach out to the brotherhood. The meeting with Maccus could have no doubt gone better, but considering everything, it pretty much went down as one should have expected. With no new answers, but at least more help, Raine and Lucius leave to try and go somewhere safe. Let's just say they failed. Another big fight where Raine does something just so goddamn stupid I couldn't help but feel she deserved what happened leads to Lucius doing something that will change her life forever. Oh, and Maccus puts an end to everything because he's just that awesome.
Despite the sappy moments, I'm loving this series and look forward to the next one.
Ancient Desire is the fifth title in the Forgotten Brotherhood, and while many readers thought the series concluded here… I’m very happy that it did not since Hunter Avenged gives us such an amazing story (yes, I’ve completed this series). While each story can stand on its own, there is a story arch woven throughout all the stories within this series. For that reason, I would suggest reading the Forgotten Brotherhood in order, if at all possible.
Most of what you’d need to know about Ancient Desire can be found in the cover description. What you won’t find there is the emotional impact this story has. I loved Raine, she’s been brought into this fierce battle unknowingly, yet she stands strong with Lucius as his mate. Her only knowledge of dragons might have been from books, but she is a force to be reckoned with when fighting not only for her life partner but for her very life as well. I adored Lucius. He might have been locked away in this cave by magic, but he’s determined to take down those who betrayed him and threatens his mate.
The action is fast, the situation intense, and the relationship sexy and dangerous as Raine and Lucius face down enemies, fight for their lives, and search out answers that will identify friend from foe. I loved stepping back into this world once again, and would definitely recommend this story and this series to any reader who loves an intense romance, paranormal creatures, puzzles to solve, danger to be faced, and a love worth fighting for.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I loved, loved Lucius and Raine’s fated mates romantic suspense story with a side of mythical creatures. I loved the contrast between the overwhelming power of Lucius and the nerdy but mentally strong Raine. The dichotomy creates rich three dimensional characters who grow and an engaging storyline. The story has all the swoony swoons while also pulling at your heartstrings with all the feels. Raine is a nerdy college professor who studies myths and folklore. She has just received a grant to take a sabbatical and is guided to a cave that contains a dragon statue. When a cave-in triggered by her guide traps her in the cave, in reaction to her proximity, Lucius, the dragon statue, breaks out of the stone. Lucius is a drakon who has been in the deep sleep for 300 years. He is also a member of the Forgotten Brotherhood, a band of uber powerful paranormal assassins who kill the worst of other paranormal entities. Once they escape the cave, Lucius and Raine are on a breakneck journey to figure out who set them up and why before they can try again. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - sweet moments, steamy scenes, fighting, dangerous situations, paranormal creatures, evil masterminds, henchmen, loyal friends, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs. While this can be read as a standalone, there is an overarching plot in the series so it’s best read in order. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Lucius is a drakon and has been in a Deep Sleep for centuries, when a female human wonders upon him in his cave and awakens him😳 Raine is a professor of myths and legends and when she receives a grant to write a book about the one thing that interests her most, she jumps on the offer. When she arrives at the cave with a stone dragon that someone has said she must see, things don’t go quite the way she had hoped, especially when her guide makes the cave entrance explode, burying her inside😬
A really good story, which I enjoyed. Looking forward to Sven’s story next🙌
Just finished the newest Forgotten Brotherhood book, which is as awesome, action-packed, and spicey as the others! Lucious is awakened by accident by Raine while she is on an expedition studying myths and legends. Little did they know they were thrown together by someone's plot. The other members of the Brotherhood come in for an assist as they try to get to the bottom of who is setting them up. The book ends with a setup for the next one but can be read as a standalone.
I was really unhappy with the way the Drakon series ended, this made up for it! I would have loved more detail on why he was such a unique Drakon. A little frustrated that the Forgotten Brotherhood was over with Bjorn and then we got this, and looks like possibly Sven's story.
Lucius is a new character in this world. I was unsure about this to start with cause I was afraid we weren't going to see the rest of the boys. But no worries they are quick to find him and lend a hand. I loved Raine. She wasn't afraid of Lucius and his grumpiness didn't put her off.
What's not to love about another xxx series romance?! We meet a new species, a drekon, and he's something special. His mate is fierce and brave as he is strong and mighty. It's a great read.
I received an ARC of this book, from the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Admittedly I’m a book cover snob. The Forgotten Brotherhood books are some of my favorite covers and the reason I first started reading N.J.. Thankfully all the stories/books have been as awesome as their covers. Love that the series is continuing.
Pure love shown through a drakons tears. For they only shed of a broken heart or/and LOVE of course. This series is very worth the time to read. I've enjoyed reading every single one learning each characters story.
