i loved the hard work vs talent conversation in these chapters. is hard work a "talent" or is hard work just hard work? but then, really, what we're talking about is people judging and labeling and not understanding what another person has experienced.

i also really like this arc of yaguchi and figuring out what art means to him. his first year was pretty rough, leaving him feeling depressed about his art, but i think its one step closer to him finding out what his art means to him. maybe he won't even keep doing oil painting and go down the route kuwana made, going into sculpture. i just want him to find his joy.

also several panels made me want to vore my whole entire fists yamaguchi tsubasa is a fucking ARTIST. the lighting. the tension.

I really feel for Yatora Yaguchi insecurities in his first year of university, this is bound to happen when you enroll in an art university. The lecturers do act extremely tough thinking it will help motivate you, and sometimes it makes one wonder 'why'. In the first year, it comes off very shocking and it leaves a huge dent on your confidence. However, as time passes by, what the lecturers say starts to hurt less and less but you can still feel that broken piece off your confidence.

I don't think you need to be an art student to relate to his struggle and him questioning his goals, interests, and ambition. Many of us go through the same experience in different fields. It was sure nice to see a character go through the same experience I went through. Honestly, now I wonder if every art student in my class felt this way, but they kept it to themselves like I did.

The manga has not disappointed me so far, and I am enjoying reading it a lot. I will be sad for a while when I catch up with all the released chapters. Then, I will have to wait for the monthly release chapter by chapter.

I despise Nekoyashiki, and I have finally figured out why. As a trained teacher, her treatment of Yotasuke makes me want to scream - whether he's on the autism spectrum or is anxious (or both), he's clearly neurodivergent and she is acting in a way guaranteed to upset and/or traumatize him. If he quits school or doesn't live up to their expectations, she can just write him off as not as good as she thought he was or unwilling to learn. Believe me, I've seen it from both sides of the classroom.

No, Japan isn't always as good with learning differences or neurodivergent students as it could be. I don't necessarily expect this storyline to play out the way I'd like. But please, at least let Yatora find a way to be some sort of support.

As the float can’t even get built for it to crumble around them, Yatora and his friends get a last minute reprieve that saves the day. Then Yatora tries to find his muse, but he’s also dealing with Yotasuke and surely those two things aren’t related.

If I was being incredibly generous, I would almost be willing to give that the feeling of aimlessness I’ve felt from this series has been reflective of Yatora’s own struggles at university, but I think that’s coincidence rather than a grand plan, sadly.

I guess it still works in a way, but Yatora’s helpless feeling has dragged on far too long for my liking, though we get some interesting turns this time around. The festival stuff is a lot of fun (there’s a Ryuji appearance that was desperately needed) and, credit where it’s due, the spread that opens up this volume is absolutely gorgeous.

There’s also some art appreciation in the form of a Velasquez exhibit that Yatora doesn’t see the point of, but with the help of some old classmates he gets a new perspective on the notion of art. It’s very effective at showing not only the paintings, but why they’re considered good and important.

This is directly in contrast to a two week fresco and relief combination assignment everybody has to complete that is this volume’s boat anchor. Not only does it mostly focus on the process of making these in talking head lecture style, a huge snore, but we don’t even see many of the finished pieces.

It’s very strange - it feels like something that was supposed to go somewhere and then just got cut off and abandoned. Given the series’ focus on actual art, I have to wonder if they couldn’t find enough pieces to use.

Amidst all that, the dwarf rabbit professor and a rumour in class start to eat away at Yotasuke, who has functioned largely as an ideal for Yatora with how good his work is. But his work is already so good that by focusing on it, he’s not getting much of anything from his education, which his teachers have picked up on.

Yatora seems to half consider Yotasuke a friend, but they definitely have communication issues and Yotasuke is clearly not there to make anything except art. There is a very telling line amongst the professors about how they aren’t expecting all of these artists to do much - they’re looking for the one gem they can spot, one forged by contact with another diamond.

That seems to be the most likely line here, especially since Yatora is taking advice while Yotasuke only knows how to give it. Then again, some of the revelations that he gets tossed this volume are pretty brutal. But it’s interesting that all the friction between them is indeed likely to spur Yatora forward to doing better work.

Despite my misgivings about Nekoyashiki, the bunny teacher, I have to say that she’s used very well in this volume. She’s clear and direct because she has to be and we get a lot of how popular she is and how much of herself she has to put out there to get her art seen.

She has a wild conversation with a female student about art that really conveys where she draws the line for her art, which is basically nowhere. And, yes, idiotic male chauvinism raises its head yet again. While I’m not enamoured of her design, the more they dig into her struggles as an artist and professor the more I like her character.

4 stars - I think on balance we are closer to getting somewhere strong with this series again. I really thought that fresco section was a complete dead zone, but the rest was more what I hope for from a volume of this series.

Vol. 5 ★★★☆☆
Vol. 6 ★★★★☆
Vol. 7 ★★★★☆
Vol. 8 ★☆☆☆☆

Pretty disappointed with the last couple of chapters. I like the concept for this arc but it keeps leaving me wanting for more. It doesn't have a strong focus like the Geidai Exam arc and feels much too scattered. The one part that has captured my attention is the unhealthy fixation Nekoyashiki has with Yotasuke. Props to Yamaguchi for a super accurate depiction of studying in art school: full of run-ins with awful professors who have no idea how to teach and project their problems on you.

this was such a sweet read after the emotional heavy books I've been reading lately. my favorite part was the dialogue about hard work vs. talent, and how ppl can get worked up over the usage of either term, but in the end it’s really all the same thing, people just word things differently. and I could really relate to yatora’s thoughts saying that he spent is freshman year of uni being depressed, and forgetting what it felt like to truly like making art and being scared of ppl who were either talented or hard working, and how being scared made him depressed… i just love how this manga explores deep topics in such a beautiful and relatable way...

The final project for the first year is here. I feel like Yatora did very little art for being an art student, or rather had little assigned.
The talent and hard work debate was pretty deeply delved into here, and we see a lot of Yotasuke's ennui here, and just how hard he struggled.
He feels trapped by the expectations of his mother and everyone else so he hides.
This is a character story for sure, but it's so well done and the art is beautiful as well. One of the mangas with the best backgrounds for sure!

tbh i can't really say whether this is well written or not. I've seen reviews criticizing the writing and the story (it was mostly the eighth book not this one) and i was defending the book in my head before realizing when i like something i don't actually think about it critically... but still, this series is by far one of my favourite series i've ever read. its strangely cathartic despite me never experiencing most of the emotions felt by the characters and i will probably support this series until i die

I like this series a lot, particularly the style direction and the character moments, but all that can get a bit bogged down when 20+ page platitudes on the nature of art interrupt the flow of the story. Sometimes the majority of a chapter will just be Yatora thinking in circles about how 'sometimes art that is good is actually good'.

All that said, I'm excited to hear more about Yota's backstory.

I really love the emotions that this manga makes me feel. It’s just…I don’t know how to even put it into words. It perfectly encapsulates how it feels to make someone that other people consume. The struggle of how you feel making it. These are hard, thorny, messy feelings and seeing Yaguchi struggle with them is so cathartic.

Me encanta

Once again, the angst of this manga is really something else. This series will probably always continuously tug on the readers' heart strings and will always make them THINK about what the characters are going through or are talking about. For me, that has been the strength of this series and will probably always be what the series will be like.
