Eve of Destruction #2

Adept of Chaos

Rate this book
Evelyn's deeds are coming back to haunt her.

Free to travel among the stars, the former warlord is enjoying her freedom, even if she’s occasionally exasperated by the women who’ve attached themselves to her. They accompany her as she encounters wonders, from dryad terraforming ships to the orcish arenas of Skaloth.

Yet Evelyn has enemies, and they have not forgotten her. They target one of the few people she truly cares about, knowing that Evelyn will come. When she does she may be drawn into a trap from which even she can’t escape.

I was born in October, 1985. Not much of my history would likely be of interest, but I grew up primarily in Utah, a land of ultra-conservative people, and yet oddly open to Science Fiction and Fantasy.

I started trying to write in high school. That didn't go well, and I mostly lost the spark for a long time, only rarely finishing writing a story, as most of my inspiration instead went into tabletop role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. In the process I developed a possibly unhealthy obsession with elves and succubi. If I ever write a story without either, it's probably Science Fiction...and there are even odds that someone will body-mod themselves to look like an elf. Trying to be honest here.

My writing tends to focus on the relationships between characters, though it may not seem like it at times. The stories in the background are just that, a backdrop for the development of the characters and situation. I try to fully think them through, but it's not always the case.

Anyway, not much more to be said. I'm an oddball, and I know it. I'm also somewhat stunned at the success my work has attained thus far, and am trying not to panic over it.

This is second in a sci-fi romp and it depends heavily on events from the first. Definitely read these in order.

Which relieves a huge amount of pressure for the review because you should know what you're getting before starting. Okay, this one has a huge lull in the beginning with a bit of a dryad sideline that I felt dragged more than a little. And I was glad that Chekov's mega-potion was the obvious story development to manifest rather than the "hero sidelined so the scrappy teamwork pays off in a rescue" one. It doesn't help that so much of the antagonist plot is foreshadowed by villain PoV sections.

None of these things dropped my enjoyment below the four star level, though the dryad yawn came close. And just to reiterate, this rating is based on being in the right mood for a pulpy romp with a power-fantasy main character. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

A note about Chaste: While still a harem and sex happening, there's only kissing and minor foreplay on-page. "Chaste" is a stretch, but it qualifies under my personal taste. Again, your expectations may vary...

It was less than eight months since I read the previous book, but I really struggled to remember all the different characters and was beginning to get worried. However after a few chapters it suddenly clicked and the story followed the pattern started in the first book, a madcap romp across the galaxy!

In fact I enjoyed this book even more than the first one.

Pretty good!

A conquer even a retired on has enemies. When those enemies come after one of the few people she cares about... there is trouble to be had.... Lots of trouble.

This is one of the more fun universes by Medrano's hand. I like the characters, the plot, the world and the writing. Honestly there is not much more to say.

You seriously have too love Benjamin Medrano's writing. Seriously every time I think of female fantasy harem done right, Medrano is who comes to mind. Do note! That I am talking about the actual good story and world building with interesting relationships that enhances the story. Yes that kind of harem. Not the disguised as fantasy harem, But is in fact just porn in the version of a book. So with that having been said Medrano man you've done it again you've gone written another amazing series that kept me listening and just wanting more. I didn't think I would like this series at first but damn was I wrong. I really enjoy how much more we get to see of the real Evelin in this one. As well as the amount of character growth. Really great pace for the plot as well.

This is a lovely sequel, and all characters really get fleshed out pleasantly. I like their developments and just the overall feel of the story. adept of Chaos really manages to blend space opera, fantasy, lesbian romance, and a harem exquisitely. This is one of the only lesbian harem novels out their(with this author having a couple more) and it just works. I can't wait for book 3 of this series.

I love these books, please write more, faster!!

Evelyn is a character most people connect to in the way that if we had her power, we would have to decide where to spend it. And I think for half of us, we would try to make a difference when we can rather than get sucked into something that it would take more than one piece to dismantle.

another great book

Second book in the series was another great success. The character is going through an interesting character development and we see more what it’s like to be her. I cannot wait for the third book in the series. It was truly an enjoyable read.

Another great book from Medrano with everything I have come to expect from their writing. I eagerly await the next installment to this series along with their other works.

A bit more complex than the first one.

Which drags from the feel of the slide of life it had. This gives it a slower pace and makes it a slightly harder read. Still good, and a nice set up for the next one.

More interesting but still not much more

Well… This book is definitely more interesting than the first one, but this series just seems like it'll end up being just barely more than that as a whole. Everything can't be a homerun right…

Better than the first book. The short stories collected into a more cohesive story and the background characters felt more developed. The culmination was fulfilling to the plot and felt more organic to the story. And coming after my last book this was a fun pallet cleanser.

Great continuation!

Loved the book, the only bad thing is that book 3 isn't out yet! But fantastic second book the characters grew and I had fun with it!

Okay

Overall, an enjoyable read. Better than the authors average. If the book were food, it would be fast food equivalent.

Wow...it turned epic!

The first book was really good but this one is epic. These authors consistently surprise with revelations and twists I did not see coming.

That was pretty fun
About as crazy and not stop as book 1. There is a slow spot at the 3/4 mark but that's character development.

About halfway through the book I was getting very fed up with the meekness of so many of the characters. Things started getting better, but characters are still pretty shallow.

It's the second time I listened to Abby Cradens narration of this space adventure. "Adept of Chaos" continues the power fantasy of unstoppable Evelyn, her rescued crew and all the poor creatures trying to stand in her way. Same as book 1, this has no stakes. Evelyn always comes out on top, sometimes by pure force, sometimes by being smart. The story is really easy to enjoy, even if the writing could be improved. It's just fun.
