Eve of Destruction #3

Mistress of Chaos

Rate this book
Evelyn wishes that her life would calm down.

As if rescuing a former empress wasn’t enough of a problem, Evelyn has gotten herself involved in the affairs of dragons, something she doesn’t appreciate in the slightest. Even dealing with them might be easier than what comes afterward, as it seems that her luck is even worse than she thought it was.

Still, if the universe thinks it can beat on Evelyn without consequence, it had better think again.

I was born in October, 1985. Not much of my history would likely be of interest, but I grew up primarily in Utah, a land of ultra-conservative people, and yet oddly open to Science Fiction and Fantasy.

I started trying to write in high school. That didn't go well, and I mostly lost the spark for a long time, only rarely finishing writing a story, as most of my inspiration instead went into tabletop role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. In the process I developed a possibly unhealthy obsession with elves and succubi. If I ever write a story without either, it's probably Science Fiction...and there are even odds that someone will body-mod themselves to look like an elf. Trying to be honest here.

My writing tends to focus on the relationships between characters, though it may not seem like it at times. The stories in the background are just that, a backdrop for the development of the characters and situation. I try to fully think them through, but it's not always the case.

Anyway, not much more to be said. I'm an oddball, and I know it. I'm also somewhat stunned at the success my work has attained thus far, and am trying not to panic over it.

This is third in a sci-fi romp that picks up right where the second left off. I recommend reading in order.

Well, I caught up to as far as the author has written. This was still all the things you'd expect given the series so far. Plus, Evelyn gets a fight that was truly worthy of her and that was fun. There's a vacation/holiday section that was a bit of a slow-down that would have been boring if I didn't like the characters so much and was interested in the new harem members.

I think I'll stick with the four stars I've been giving so far in the series, even though I don't have anything specific to call out. It's still a power-fantasy romp and I'm still in the mood, so I enjoyed it very much. I dunno, maybe I'll call out the minor editing issues that have been present in all of the books so far? It's not as egregious as some indie authors are and I only notice every chapter or so (which means it's probably about three times that, just FYI). But that's just rude so I won't...

A note about Steamy/Chaste: Well, this one straddled the line a bit. There's nothing much more than kissing, but one or two scenes got close enough that I can't call it for steam or not. So neither tag this time. I think the three books have now had one Steamy, one Chaste, and now this one neither. Trifecta Mr. Medrano. Achievement unlocked.

Another enjoyable read following the exploits of Evelyn and her crew, although not quite as interesting as the previous book.

More slow & slice of lifey
Given the over all arc of the entire series this slower more sedate section makes perfect sense. If this were a standalone book, which it isn't then it would be meh and dull.
Still I like it when the author has the confidence in his / her characters to let them breathe. And in this case a lot of strangers have just been thrown together and need time to get acquainted. These multiple character introductions were handled smartly as a series of dates that told us more bout them than words alone, or a tedious info dump could have handled.

great read

Third in the series and did not disappoint. Characters remain interesting and show steady growth. Enjoy the action without unnecessary drama. Great space sci fun is hard to find. Definitely worth the read. Looking forward to the next book.

Superior writing and excellent characters

I really like these novels thus far and just absolutely cannot get over the excellent character development. The author has done a great job and the sense of humor and silly interactions hi e this book a great flair.

Enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed the universe in which this book is set. Though, there were a few too many characters for me to feel properly invested in them.
Still, I am liking the series so far and will certainly read any books that are to come in the future.

Probably the best book thus far

This is probably the best book of the series thus far to be me. It's engaging in a way the others lost in their lack of clarity & direction. Wonder how it's going to end.

Book three feels very derivative of the first two books. The bashful beautiful crewmates who are part of a harem is overdone at this point as well. Unfortunately, this takes away from the overall story.

First book finished in 2025. I had fun with most of this book but the overall theme just doesn't seem to click with me. I like the premise but the OP wizard/fighter protagonist Eve just lacks too much emotion and depth. Good book but not for me.

My favorite of Benjamin's series. It hard to keep it fresh and interesting when dealing with such a powerful protagonist so good job Ben.

Ben is one my favorites.

At this point this series is getting up there with my favorite ongoing series alongside forging Hephaestus. So good, and I'm excited for the next

This entire series has been great. Twists and turns and good character development. Recommend to anyone who likes a little magic mixed in with their sci-fi.

So much fun! More destruction from Fya. Always a maelstrom of chaos and joy. Thank you again Sir Benjamin Medrano.

Not as much fun as the first two books in the series. Too much harem and too few Evelyn Incidents.

Cool book!

In this third book Evelyn has to deal with the fallout of the previous book. Having rescued her 'Princess' she also rescued a number of slaves. Among them a Dragon. A powerful one at that. As such she has to play the politics of the Draconic Factions. A process made difficult by not being a dragon...

Overall this third book in this fantasy/ Sci-fy hybrid slice-of-life was an easy read. Medrano's characters are likable as usual and the mix of genre elements keeps the whole thing fresh. Though OP Main Characters are all the rage these times. Evelyn has the advantage of just being powerful. No speedrun to OP Godhood, just an element in the story that reinforces the rest of it.

In any case, I'll be returning for the next book.1

It was an enjoyable and fun read. The story about Evelyn and her crew progress further.

This time Evelyn gets tangled up in dragon politics and finds out that there is a fun side of it - An all out duel with next to no restrictions.

5 - Once again, this is just a fun power fantasy with no stakes, no angst and a lot of exasperated eye rolling. :D
