Tia West, 17, isn’t your ordinary high school senior. For one, she has six siblings, five of which she’s just as much a mother figure to as a big sister. Then there’s the stray pets adding to the chaos of the West abode, and it doesn’t seem like she could possibly take on another project or responsibility when Tia tackles the mother of them all in the form of a fellow classmate and juvenile delinquent.
Gibson Tazmerek, 17, wears his facial scars as a warning, and most of his classmates have gotten the stay-away message loud and clear. His reputation precedes him. But Tia doesn’t scare that easily. In fact, it seems she hasn’t met a challenge that she doesn’t want to nurture, and Taz is no exception.
Though listed as YA romance, which I don’t normally dip into, the sample pulled me in and then the characters just kept tugging. Like to the point where I couldn’t put it down till I finished it. They were unique. They were engaging. And coupled with their witty narration and entertaining banter/dialogue, they kept me turning pages to find out everything from what makes them tick to what antics the West tribe would stir up next.
In fact, the characters are one of the strengths of the novel. From the main characters to the side characters, there was depth and there was distinction. One of the things that stood out was something the adult romance market is often short on—a strong heroine. I was incredibly pleased to find Tia as someone who not only didn’t break down, didn’t back down, and wasn’t about to be walked over, whether from potty mouth ten year old boys or surly seventeen year old ones. Simply put, the absence of doormat female characters was refreshing.
Though Taz is broken and has plenty of frustrating moments, my heart did break for him. He was an underdog to root for, and I was rooting for him to find his voice.
Told via their dual alternating first person POV, the story was strong and engaging. While there are some heavier issues woven in, for the most part it didn’t drag it down and the tone kept it largely lighthearted. However, towards the end there was just one angst too many for me and a reveal I felt that took away from the romance.
And on the romantic end of things, the romance is largely slow burn.
As an adult romance reader, I did crave more steam, but the scenes that are there are well written and avoid the cheesy dialogue that befalls certain adult romances.
This is the first book in The Choosy Beggars Series. The next story will feature Taz's bandmate.

Shatter is my second book that I have read by Charisse Moritz. Shakespeare Burning was her debut novel and it blew me away, so I eagerly started reading.
Tia is responsible for her six brothers and sisters, and now, seeing she ran him over, Taz. And he could sure use a friend. I feel a healthy respect and sympathy for Tia. Taz pulls at my heartstrings and I feel there is much more to learn about him. Tia loves to rescue those in need, whether human or critter.
Tia remembers good times with Taz, when they were much younger, Juvie had changed him. He was like a porcupine throwing up his quills when anyone tried to get close to him.
Tully, Tia’s little sister is so sweet. Her precious little girl voice and the things she says are priceless. Her interaction with Taz is amazing and Charisse was a master at showing it. She is full of ‘rainbows and happiness.’ What a wonderful yet simple description, as I fought for words to describe her, Charisse Moritz supplied them.
Tia and her brothers and sisters are on their own because of an automobile accident. Her father was seriously injured and her mother moved to be by his side. Her aunt is supposed to be with them, but she left right after she got there. Think about it. A high school senior girl is doing her best to play mother and father for her 5 brothers and sisters. Her heart is BIG and her compassion endless. Tia is the most positive character I have ever read. She never quit fighting for what she believed in. Despair, sure, but somehow she grasps HOPE and figures out a way.
The few who believe in Taz are amazing and I hope you meet them.
These wonderfully written characters go through so many emotions that I laughed, I worried, I fretted, I hoped, and I kept on reading. They were created in vivid, realistic detail that may make you want to wrap your arms around these youngsters and tell them everything will be all right.

4 1/2 Stars!
This one was a good read. I was hooked from the first Chapter. Tia's father is in the hospital and her mother is there with with while Tia is home holding down the fort. Tia has a bunch of siblings so holding down the fort is not easy. She a tough girl. She likes to save things. She believes in second chances. Taz is a mess. He needs a break but everyone is hard on him. His past isn't very good. He not a project for Tia, she really likes him and see through his past and the rumors and see the real him. I liked how when Taz was brought into the West family he gave all the sibling nicknames in his head. These two have a lot of pressure from life and things to work through. I really liked this one and it's one you should check out.

I recieved a review copy from the author, she is one of the sweetest soul in this world. I loved her previous novel Shakespeare Burning. So I had to pick this one up. This novel starts of with Tia West. She has five younger siblings whom she is responsible for in the absence of their parents. Tia West is an unique charecter well know for her kindness. On her first day to her senior year, she runs over Taz with her van(which was described as "the world’s ugliest minivan" by Taz, lol) This books is the "love at first sentence" kinda book. The pace was well and once I started it, I couldn't stop. Tia's family is a treat, I love every single one of them... [Their acronym game would leave you rolling on the floor🤣 and I'm not spoiling the fun]

“I’m so sorry my brother is a giant idiot. His shoe size is higher than his IQ.”The author has a great talent for setting the dynamics of families and struggles without overdoing it. If you are looking for a book that will blow you away, here it is. I just love the dark witty humor and retorts specific charecters have and it made my experience all the more fun and enjoyable.
I shrug. Explaining would require more words than I’ve got in me.Each charecter was well described and I felt like I know them and I have lived with them, Charisse Moritz gave me the familiarity of a person who has always been with them. Oooh! There is a band, and they look gorgeous! One book and I know every single person and their attributes and I love them for it. Taz struggles alot and his Perspective will have you mostly giggling like an idiot at his inner jokes and feel the pain he has succumbed to. Tia is the light to his dark days and his salvation but how do you save someone who has never known what it is to feel free.
Conversations with Taz are an exercise in patience, a fill in the blank ordealYou might be wondering why I have rated it a 3 start, well the plot was good and it dragged at some part. This seemed similar to Shakespeare Burning in more than one ways. Maybe you would like the idea of reading a book like that but I'm not comfortable with it. I'm sorry to say that I enjoyed Shakespeare Burning more than I did this book. But, Shatter filled the spaces where Shakespeare Burning lacked in vastness of the world building. Tia's mother is the only charecter which I felt was incomplete and she was oblivious to most matters regarding to her family. Both the books are truly unique and this is where I must have laughed the most, throughout the journey and had the most fun.
I’m tired of hating the minutes behind me, dreading the ones ahead and having no idea where to go from here.The ending is just so perfect and you will be thanking me for recommending you these books to you😉 which I definitely do. The next novel is this series is about Shae😍! I'm at a point where I might be obsessed with this author and be willing to read everything she had to tell.

In her sophomore novel, Moritz again does not disappoint. The two main characters, Tia and Taz, endearingly find their way into your heart. Shatter is funny; like Shakespeare Burning, witicisms will be leaping off each page but this book is not a comedy--so don't get the wrong impression. Your heart will ache for Taz, who has been through the wringer and has never been given a chance. Your heart will love Tia, as she is loveable and positive, but not in the overbearing, I'm-an-annoying-ray-of-sunshine-because-my-life-is-perfect kind of way--because you will find out she has her own set of problems. I loved this book and its characters and I would recommend that everyone read it. You won't be disappointed.

Let me first find my words to review this 🤔
Though it took me a while to finish this book, I have to say I really loved the way Moritz narrate her stories. They just sound so smooth in my mind and I never had to stop for a second to wonder what I’m reading about. I have to admit though, I wasn’t a fan of the leading man. I was more curious about Tia’s brother and his backstory or something. Taz, at times, was a bit too angsty. I also didn’t like the way he called people names. Probably because I get confused who’s who and it makes him sound bitter and whiny as if the whole world is against him. I sometimes wished he just called them by their names, really. But that’s just me. It was an okay story overall. Loved the side characters more, though.

I absolutely loved this book!!!
It was a fun and easy read for me. It captivated me from the beginning. The story of Tia and TAz is amazing. Their fun characters make you so obsessed to know more and to finish the book without putting it down.
It is a great romance story with interesting views of the life that both Tia and Taz live. It's deep in the right places and fun in others.
An amazing read that i recommend if you are looking for a mature romance.

There’s no coming back from running someone over on your first day of senior year.
“It’s not my fault. Yes, I just ran over a guy. A hot guy. Sort of. Not that he’s sorta hot. I sorta ran him over.”
Charise Moritz gives us another emotional YA Romance with her latest, Shatter.
Our hearts simultaneously swell and break for our main girl, Tia West. Forget daily routine videos and prom dress shopping. This high school senior has bigger priorities as she is tasked with raising her four siblings with little to no help from our return big bro, Terek West. Tia suffers from a bleeding heart and on top of her whirlwind of responsibilities at home, she sets her sights on troubled Gibson Tazmerek.
Truth hurts – Taz is not our ideal male love interest. Book Bin Divers prefer even their literary boyfriends give off less of an unwashed homeless guy vibe. And we are not super fans of broken boys that need saving. But this is YA, and we know that damaged heroes build the angst. And Taz does have some of his own blend of book boyfriend charm. The way this guy thinks of his girl, the mental pedestal he places her on, will certainly melt your heart.
“She’s the child who leaves milk and cookies out for Santa, and I’m the guy who eats them because he’s starving.”
Tragedy can either break a couple or bring one closer together. The love story between Tia and Taz totally follows suit with Moritz’s style. We were constantly on the edge of our seats, waiting to see which character was going to move in for the first kiss, the first touch, and the eventual first-time together.
We can’t forget about Taz’s rockstar quality. Literally. Taz has a strict, even violent background with learning how to play the guitar and is now playing in a band. This creates some pretty romantic scenes in the story that are sure to make you swoon.
One of our favorite little elements in romance collections is getting cameos of previous characters we loved. Cleo and Shake, from Shakespeare Burning, make separate visits into this new story, but we wish we could have seen them together.
One of the harder pills to swallow with this book is seeing a former favorite character acting in a way we can’t get behind. Tia’s brother (Rat/Terek) is going through it. We’re introduced to a darker, less likable, side of this guy than the one we saw in Shakespeare Burning and we are really hoping that he is redeemed in a book of his own.
Shatter is chalk full of all the most heartbreaking sorts of teen drama. We wish that Taz hadn’t become such a project for Tia. We wish that Tia’s mom had made some better choices, rather than leaving her kids in charge of themselves and then coming back and criticizing their decisions. We wished that every single adult in Taz’s life hadn’t failed him.
But of course, without all the dark parts, we wouldn’t have the intensity that makes this book a gem.
Awful cooking. Brutal pranks. Five stars.

This is my favorite book so far this year and would be surprised if anything topped it. I love the book Loving Mr. Daniels by Brittainy C. Cherry and this book is tied for first place in my favorites.
Taz is a senior in HS and his childhood was really f*cked up. This of course lead to him acting out, landing in juvie, getting kicked out of foster homes, and eventually ending up homeless. (I might have the order wrong on these but you get the picture.) The book starts just after he has moved in with his mother and step-father. From all his trauma, Taz doesn't speak, gets overwhelmed by loud noise, is extremely jumpy and twitchy. Although Taz didn't always make the best choices, he did them with survival in mind and I admired his strength.
Tia is raising five siblings because She is a bleeding heart who takes in stray animals and runs herself ragged to continue giving her siblings the same life her parents did. She hits Taz on his bike on the first day of school and makes it her goal to become his friend. I admired her compassion and willingness to keep her family together.
Tia's siblings were a riot, especially Tully and the twins. I laughed so hard in parts of this book that my stomach ached. Their interactions, the twin's shenanigans, and Tia's and Taz's inner commentary and observations had me in stitches. I was impressed by the author's ability to balance the serious plot with the humor, and it all worked together seamlessly.
I hated Taz's mom. She was a bitch of epic proportions, heartless and cruel. There aren't many interactions with Taz's step-father until later in the book.
Taz's and Tia's friends were also well developed with distinct personalities. It takes immense talent to have so many characters in a story, all of which are unique, three-dimensional, and unforgettable. The author does this so well that I doubt I'll forget about any of the characters in this story anytime soon.

This is an exceptional book. I would recommend this read to anyone. You never know what has formed a person to get them to where they are today, never judge a person. This is a book that really makes you think while you are reading it of how you treat people.

I finished Shatter all of five minutes ago.
Normally, I would take a day or two to gather my thoughts, especially after finishing a book I was so absorbed in. But, right now, as I curl up in a ball and fall down the rabbit hole of post-amazing-book-feels, I want to put my thoughts into words.
I will start with the only thing I didn’t like about Shatter: it ended.
Why, why, why could this not go on forever?
It has been the longest time since I have truly enjoyed a YA book this much. Normally, there are parts of YA romances that make the ethical parts of me cringe in horror. The bits that pull on and glorify the darkest parts of adolescence and humanity in general. Now, that isn’t to say that these themes aren’t in Shatter, because they are.
They are just so perfectly portrayed.
Charisse Moritz is an incredible writer. Her way with words sucked me in, and I felt like I was in Tia and Taz’s heads. It took me a good few chapters to appreciate Tia after the way the story opened, but it happened and before I knew it, I adored her. My initial concerns about yet another shallow, superficial female MC were blown away to reveal a young woman worth of the title of the novel’s heroine. Both POVs are distinct and heartbreaking in their own ways, and I WISH it was possible to reach through the pages and just give both of them a reassuring hug. There are times when they each face tough situations that no one their age should have to deal with, and even though their responses aren’t always perfect or sensible, they learn and grow so beautifully throughout the story and that makes the novel that much more powerful.
If you’re wondering if this is the right book for you, it is. I think everybody should have a read of this poignant story. It covers a range of very serious topics with grace and touching delicacy, and while you hope a YA reader never has to experience these things, if they do, Taz and Tia are amazing fictional role models.
I can’t recall the number of times I laughed and cried and screamed at this book. I was totally sucked in, and I can’t wait to read it again, and to read the sequel and learn about the other characters. Charisse Moritz’s writing style is sublime, and there were some lines that were so good that I had to stop and re-read them over and over again. If I had to go back and share them all, I’d wind up in court for plagiarism, but if I had to pick one to share, one that sums up the message I think everyone should get out of this book (and why I will be wanting my child to read the novel when she is old enough), it is this: “Some secrets need to be kept and others need to be told. Deciding which is which can be tricky.”
And this novel? It gets those decisions right time and time again. In a world where young people are shown glorified versions of bad decision making, this book gets it right.
Thank you, Charisse, for writing such an important story for young and adult readers alike. Every sensitive topic you explored was done with such respect and tenderness. I can’t wait to read more.
P.S. What I said about the ending being the only thing wrong… Well, that’s not entirely true. As much as I hate to see a good story ‘end’, you picked a perfect moment to let readers know just how things for our beloved Tia and Taz would wind up. If I could give this fifty out of five stars, I would, but Goodreads and I don’t get along when it comes to rating scales.
Normally, I would take a day or two to gather my thoughts, especially after finishing a book I was so absorbed in. But, right now, as I curl up in a ball and fall down the rabbit hole of post-amazing-book-feels, I want to put my thoughts into words.
I will start with the only thing I didn’t like about Shatter: it ended.
Why, why, why could this not go on forever?
It has been the longest time since I have truly enjoyed a YA book this much. Normally, there are parts of YA romances that make the ethical parts of me cringe in horror. The bits that pull on and glorify the darkest parts of adolescence and humanity in general. Now, that isn’t to say that these themes aren’t in Shatter, because they are.
They are just so perfectly portrayed.
Charisse Moritz is an incredible writer. Her way with words sucked me in, and I felt like I was in Tia and Taz’s heads. It took me a good few chapters to appreciate Tia after the way the story opened, but it happened and before I knew it, I adored her. My initial concerns about yet another shallow, superficial female MC were blown away to reveal a young woman worth of the title of the novel’s heroine. Both POVs are distinct and heartbreaking in their own ways, and I WISH it was possible to reach through the pages and just give both of them a reassuring hug. A funny, uplifting, yet tragic story that had me gripped from the very beginning. Having read (and loved) Charisse’s first book Shakespeare Burning, it was so lovely to briefly revisit the characters in a completely new narrative that felt so familiar due to the writing style. The characters are believable, the humour nicely placed and the romance is strong. I cannot to wait the next installment.

I absolutely loved this book right from page one. I felt kind of like a hamster on a wheel, I just kept reading, reading and reading. I was racing to finish Tia and Taz's story because I HAD to know what was next. I loved Shakespeare Burning, don't get me wrong. In my opinion, Shatter is leaps and bounds better.
Tia's personality is quirky, fun and I adored the movie quotes. The portions with her wild family were probably my favorite parts. So many times in books when there is a big family, there is always one member that is totally pointless. There usually is another member you forget all together. Not only do I know their names, but I can tell you character quirks for each one. Also, I feel like I KNOW them as a real person. I feel like one of the tribe after getting a sneak peak in the house.
Taz, oh Taz. His life was full of hardship, sadness and anger. He is the abused puppy that needs someone to pet him. I was so thankful the whole book that Tia was taking such an active role in helping him. I found his inner dialogue hilarious. He is for a big portion of the book quite quiet. Even with this, he says SO MUCH. I find it really impressive that the author could convey this troubled, complicated boy with only inner thoughts at some points. His band members were a real treat too. I am looking forward to hearing about them. They added a totally different spark to the book that wasn't needed, but I really appreciated it.
This is a book I will reread over and over. Some people might see that it is set in high school and be turned off. I feel it is more new adult like. There are also deeper themes, witty humor and great characters. Again, Loved It!

This was a great book, a true page turner. I really connected to and felt empathy for the characters. I definitely recommend, and will be getting the next books in the series!!

In Shatter, eldest daughter, Tia, has taken on the roles of her absent parents, taking care of her five younger siblings, the home, bills and everything else; she's struggling to keep it all together while her older brother has also disappeared. first, i would like to thank the author of shatter for the free copy of their book in exchange for an honest review. this book did not disappoint!
tia and taz both face their own battles throughout shatter. tia has to take care of her whole family during truly unfortunate circumstances. taz has many internal struggles he is coping with and the world continues to seem against him.
all of shatter is filled with funny moments and relatable struggles most of us have experienced. while it is entertaining in a light-hearted way, shatter also focuses on overcoming incredibly difficult obstacles in life. tia and taz are both strong characters who are even stronger when they are together.
two important themes that stood out to me while reading were:
1. everyone deserves a second chance.
2. don’t judge someone based off of other people’s opinions.
this slow burn romance kept me interested throughout with the main characters’ circumstances and undeniable chemistry. btw, there are some steamy scenes near the end.
shatter reminded me that i’m not alone. it’s ok to ask for help. asking for help doesn’t make you weak, it makes you human.

Oh my goodness! Charisse’s writing is phenomenal.It reminds me a lot of John Green. I cannot express how much I loved this book. It made my heart ache, laugh, pound and do flip flops. Taz stole my heart because I think I have a heart much like Tia’s. I am a fixer and want to fix broken people. So I can definitely relate to this story. It’s a story of a troubled teenage boy given a hard life from the start and a teenage girl willing to sacrifice all to bend him into who she believes he can be. But he might just break before she is finished with him. It is a beautiful representation of true love and never giving up.
The mature content was a little more intense than what I’m used to reading but overall this story just flowed so easy. I wanted to devour it. I cannot wait to start on Shakespeare Burning her debut novel and I am waiting in eager anticipation for Book 2- Shae’s story - Sacrifice.

Perhaps I'm just too old to be reading YA books. Every adult in this book was either stupid or completely unbelievable. There was so much forced chaos and I found it unfathomable that Taz would willingly jump into that considering all his tics. All the family stuff was annoying and over-the-top.
Tia was constant verbal diarrhea, she never shut up. The way she just forced herself into Taz's life was alarming. Considering she was single-handedly parenting (in her mind at least) her siblings, it's hard to believe she had the time to stalk him.
I should have given up on this book since it's obviously not for me, but I wanted to understand Taz. He was way too violent, and a jerk to almost everyone around him. His horrible childhood doesn't excuse his behavior. In the end there wasn't really a resolution to his story, it was all vaguely off page.
Lastly, I didn't appreciate the misogyny. The overbearing brother going on about "no one touches my sister" is embarrassing. As is girls who wear miniskirts must be slutty. Aren't we past that stuff?

SHATTERED My HEART
One heck of an attention grabbing read that will stick with me for a long time. It shattered my heart toyed with my emotions and was impossible to put down. It got in my head and had me forgetting about my world of responsibilities and just wanting to read and read. It's bold and cruel and truly disturbing yet has so much beauty in it, it helped to relieve the darkness that clings to you like a second skin but impossible to escape the struggles, abuse and betrayal Taz suffers in such a short life span is just painful and torcher to read. Its brilliantly written and told with vivid details it's impossible to escape the feels that get under your skin and eat you alive while ripping your heart out. The chemistry is powerful and addictive and yes it gets hot and steamy. It's and outstanding read with an amazing ending that I'm thrill to have read and A first for me by this very gifted writer and will definitely be reading more of her stories in the future.

I won this book as a goodreads giveaway and this is my honest opinion. Gibson Tazmerek and Tia West have both learned to deal with what life has given them. Taz has a backstory that would break anyone's heart. Tia, although she doesn't know what happened to Taz, has a heart big enough to see him. Can these two troubled teens find a way to heal one another? Is Taz worth saving? Is Tia able to continue long enough to make a change without breaking herself? This book is gut-wrenching in the details. I would recommend this to anyone who believes that all people deserve redemption and love.

Enjoyable story about Tia and Taz. Tia is trying to take care of her siblings while her father is in the hospital. She is a high school senior and has way too much to do. On the first day of school she runs into Taz with the family van. She knew him when they were younger but he has been in reform school. He has been abused and trusts no one. Will he learn to trust?

Reading young adult books makes me so glad my high school years are behind me. Charisse brought me right back to the cutthroat world that is high school. I enjoyed the interplay between the characters and loved the ending.
