The world of White Knight continues to expand in this exciting new miniseries! With things heating up in Neo-Gotham, Jason Todd revisits his post-Robin past to find the one ally he believes will help him turn the tide in the battle against Derek Powers. “Bruce Wayne is Batman.” Four words that saved Jason’s life and destroyed his future forever. Banished by his mentor and damaged by The Joker, the former Robin is left to become something different, something stronger, a relentless force for justice in the city…Red Hood! With nobody to answer to, he walks the dangerous line between hero and villain. That is until he meets Gan, a local girl from East Backport who needs his help to save her neighborhood from a super-criminal terrorizing its citizens. And she’s willing to fight alongside him, whatever it takes!
After breaking into the industry at a young age, Sean Gordon Murphy made a name for himself in the world of indie comics before joining up with DC. In his tenure, he has worked on such titles as Batman/Scarecrow: Year One, Teen Titans, Hellblazer, Joe The Barbarian, and the critically acclaimed miniseries American Vampire: Survival Of The Fittest and The Wake with Scott Snyder. Murphy also wrote and illustrated the original graphic novel Offroad and the popular miniseries Punk Rock Jesus.
A cool little spin on Jason. Basically he's training a girl who wants to be the next robin. It's fun, little cute, but I dunno if it's super important when it comes to the mythology of Batman White Knight universe.
Batman White Knight: Presents puts Jason in a mentor role. It takes on this grumpy mentor / overenthusiastic student dynamic that I really enjoyed reading about. It reminded me of Peter and Miles from Into the Spider-verse with the way they both behaved. This was a fun and quick read. I can’t wait for the next issue.
I really enjoy how this is a totally different take on things. I don't have much to say about the White Knight universe, honestly at this moment beyond: It's just something else. There's a lot going on but I feel like it shows a lot of love and detail and craftmanship and worldbuilding that I do appreciate and respect.
With Murphy's art and storytelling, I couldn't bring myself to give it 3 stars. It's a decent enough story that builds Jason's origin in this universe, but it doesn't tie in to the ongoing series. I thought, given the way Beyond the White Knight just dropped Jason from the story, that we'd get his behind the scenes activities from there. The potential exists to get there in the next issue, but with this shaping up to be a mentor-type tale, I only expect it to show us what influenced Jason to go into the role he did at Arkham.
Awww this was sweet🥹 I don’t think I read anything that focused on Todd before. Will I continue cheating by marking issues to get to my reading goal? Probably. Will I do it next year too? 😱😱😱 you accuse ME of cheating in my future goodreads challenge?!😱 yeah I’ll probably do it if I had to. Unless I make it 15 books🤔
Haven’t read the rest of the White Knight series, so I’m lacking some context, but I enjoyed this fresh take on Jason Todd’s storyline. Looking forward to seeing where it goes and getting to know Gan as a character.
I love Gan!! We stan a friendly neighborhood Robin! Considering Jason’s place as the bulkiest Robin, he’s probably the best-suited to mentoring a former rugby player. Excited for book two!
I was expecting Red Hood. What I got was a re-imagined origin story, which is not bad at all. And Jason Todd training a wannabe Robin. I hope issue two pays off.
Here’s where we expand on the backstory of Jason Todd in the Murphyverse. Jason/Red Hood is probably my favorite Bat Family character, so I was pretty excited to read this, especially after all the hints they dropped about him in the main White Knight titles.
We learn what happened between him and the Joker and what he’s doing now. He takes on the training of a wannabe Robin, a girl named Gan, who is awesome, and they prepare to take on the super villain Shriek.
