Title: The Rakehell's Seduction
Series: Seduction #2
Author: Lauren Smith
Release date: February 6, 2017
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

Ambrose and Alex's story is book two in the Seduction series, each book starring its own disreputable rake. I enjoy reading about these heroes in historicals, there's something so satisfying about seeing these men meet their downfall. Particularly if its with a sassy and strong-willed heroine, and that's exactly the pair that we had here.

Ambrose set out to (out of the goodness of his heart, mind you) seduce and ruin the Earl of Rockford's daughter. The Earl and his father had been good friends and he holds a lot of respect for him. It just wouldn't do for any scoundrel to succeed in the wager to steal her innocence. He's doing her a favor saving her from those ruthless other men. He genuinely felt that he was noble to "save her from a fate with a worse man than him." At least that's what he starts out telling himself.

Things quickly get complicated when he has an interlude with a bewitching woman outside the ballroom. The beautiful lady who stirs his interest turns out to be none other than his unfortunate target. An invite from her father to stay at their home only serves opportunity on a platter for him. He's sure she's ripe for the picking and sets out to charm her out of her corset with everything he has. But Alex is no wilting, meek country girl. She's more than up for his game, and she's a worthy opponent.

I should not be tempted by him. No matter what she told herself, she was tempted. It was a good thing she despised everything else about the man. She would not give in to such an arrogant, pompous arse.

Alex has been trying to move past a broken heart for some time. Betrayed by the man she loved and set her dreams on, she has no interest in forming any type of attachment with a man. She wasn't counting on this charmer to awaken passions that she thought had been buried for good. Ambrose has his own fears of love, which led to his disreputable behavior in the past. But now he starts to realize that he's growing an attachment at the worst possible time. He's found someone special, but they're built on a foundation of lies. How long will it be before everything crumbles underneath them?

This was my first by this author, and overall I really enjoyed it. It took me a while to get into it in the beginning, but eventually I got hooked and flew through the rest. The heroine was strong, intelligent, and no pushover. The hero wasn't the most noble of guys starting out, but by the end he had been truly reformed and transformed. He had some very satisfying groveling as well, I have to say that was particularly gratifying for me.

If you're looking for a fairly short and light read, this will be the one for you. It was pretty low on drama, though there was a little twist in the end. I'll be interested to see what's in store with Vaughn's story in the following in the series, The Rogue's Seduction.

Who knew that accepting a wicked wager in a betting book would lead to the love of his life?

4.5 - "There's no place I wish to be... but here." Stars!

Lauren Smith steps back in time again for the second book in her Seduction series. I adored The Duellist’s Seduction so couldn’t wait too read the next story from the series.

I am not a huge Historical Romance reader, but I always get a little excited when it comes to a Lauren Smith release, because although as a reader you are taken back to a day where it was improper for a real lady to get down and dirty with a gent pre-marriage, the author always delivers up a refreshing story with a feisty female lead, and a charmingly cheeky rogue ready to tame her, although the roles are generally reversed relation to whom it is that's been tamed by the end of the book.

You’ve set the rules for our game, and I intend to win…

Ambrose and Alexandra’s budding relationship offered up both those character traits really well. Ambrose is known about town as a notorious ladies-man, but when he sees the name of the daughter of one of his father’s closest friends in a book of wagers, he feels bound to step up and take on the bet to save Alex from a potentially worse fate.

"I don’t know what the future holds, but let’s take it one day, one kiss at a time."

Alex is no shy retiring violet though and when Ambrose turns up at her father’s country estate with the intent to stay several weeks, she takes it upon herself to let him know that although her father has welcomed him with open arms, she most certainly hasn’t, and with some quite funny results.

I loved the little nod to the authors other series The League of Rogues, and the lengths Ambrose went to (particularly in the books latter stages), in his efforts to win Alex’s heart.

"You came into my life like a shooting star. That night we met… it changed me. I wasn’t whole, not until I met you."

I look forward to reading more inclusions to the series, they are always a great way to take a break from modern day stresses and strains.

ARC generously provided by the author, and it was, as it always is a pleasure to provide the above honest review in exchange.

Ambrose Worthing is a rake if ever there was one. A confirmed bachelor, he scoffs at the mere notion of monogamy, and makes no bones about enjoying the trappings of his freedoms. A cad though he is, he refuses to sit idly by when he learns of the intended ruination of a family friend for the purpose of handsome wager.

If you thought he intended to inform the injured party, you’d be wrong. He’s a cad remember? He intends to win the wager by seducing the Lady, and in doing so, save her from the unsavoury characters that also wish to pursue her.

The Lady in question is, Lady Alexandra Rockford. She’s an immediately likeable character, completely at odds with the stuffy sensibilities of society. She’s opinionated, free spirited, and needs not the security of a marriage to acknowledge her self worth.

Although unaware of the wager, she’s more than aware of Ambrose’s reputation. Suspicion and intrigue circle with his new found interest in her. It’s a delicious game of cat and mouse, and one they soon have far too much fun playing. Alex’s tricks brought much humour, and believe it or not, Ambrose proved to be quite the charming character.

The Rakehell’s Seduction was a delightful, sultry read and wonderful addition to a series that’s fast becoming a favourite. I’ve throughly enjoyed my foray into Lauren Smiths world of rakes, and I look forward to being ravaged by the next.

Edit to say - I read this one years ago when I was an angry reviewer 😅 I’m going to reread this at some point though!

Original review (2018)
Gah I hated this book. What a completely unlikable *ss of a hero. The heroine too was a pushover that held certain beliefs that crumbled at a moments notice. I’m going to put some book snippets in to share.

The concept of the book is there is a wager on whoever can publicly ruin the heroine will win 5,000 pounds. The hero takes the bet, to protect her from other unscrupulous men that will take her virginity.

Here’s a view of literally their first meeting. He runs into her outside in a secluded area of the garden

“Ambrose slid an arm around her waist, pulling her against him. “I would never say you were a peahen. You remind me more of a doe. Deep, expressive eyes, sleek limbs. All you need is a proper buck, one to mount you and claim you as his with deep, powerful thrusts.” He painted the verbal picture and punctuated it with a slow roll of his pelvis against hers.”

This made my my mouth fall open. I was not impressed, but was like okay maybe he’ll redeem himself as the book goes on. I’m fine with bad boys, I’m fine with bad choices....but I felt like he never did redeem himself.

He finds out that subject of the bet, his prey, the heroine, is actually the daughter of his friend. You would think he would inform his friend of the bet to protect his friends daughter and thus resolve the problem of the entire wager. But he continues on because for whatever reason, he must do it. But we know he’s purely selfish and wants her and is using it as some jacked up noble excuse.

“But he certainly had every intention of fulfilling his end of the wager and seducing her.
Once he realized who she was, the bet had seemed less important than his genuine desire to take her to bed. Part of him knew he was damned because once he’d fulfilled his bet, he wouldn’t be welcomed back into this house by her or her father. They would never know he’d sought to save her from a fate with a worse man than him.”

*eye rolling*

She says no I must stand strong and not let him seduce me! The very next moment he pulls her away they basically do everything except actually lose the virginity. Then she invites him to her bed. There’s no tension, there’s no getting to know the characters on a better level before intimacy. To me it was a book with the barest of plots to get to the sex. Which is totally fine for some people, but I don’t like it, personally.

So it all ends up working out and they live happily ever after. I just felt like I didn’t get to know any of the characters, the hero went from bent on seduction and never ever going to marry to head over heels in love and I just didn’t get to see how he got there. Books like this make the relationship feel insincere to me and I am always left with the feeling that their happily ever after doesn’t actually last. 😢

Nice, pithy writing, but I just could not get over the hero’s motivation to seduce the heroine. Someone at White’s has set up a bet that they will pay $5000 pounds (@$120,000 today) if they provide proof of her ruination. The hero sees the victim is the daughter of a close fried of his father’s and is going to fall on his sword so to speak because he at least can give her a good time. What a mensch. He doesn’t have a problem with virgins.

The heroine is a little feisty and he falls for her. He falls for her in that this will be an easy job having sex with her, not falls for her in warning her of the nasty little plot, or letting her father that he respects know so he can come up with someone, or just stuffing the evil doer in a closet. Marrying her isn’t even an option as it won’t stop the hoard of gambling baboons from going after the girl.

This is where knowing something about the era work against the enjoyment. Despite the author’s capable depiction of a charming guy, he was an irritant. Give me an unqualified villain who writhes in emotional agony for his evil deeds than this . Really, I’d like to read one.

'The Rakehell's Seduction' by Lauren Smith is book Two in the "Seduction" series. This is the story of Ambrose Worthing and Lady Alexandra Rockford. Ambrose is a know rake and seems to be somewhat selfish but when he learns about a bet that is on the books about Alexandra the daughter of his father's best friend. Ambrose goes forward with a plan to try and win the bet in order to help Alexandra in a way. Alexandra has been hurt in the past by a childhood sweetheart who up and married a heiress. So Alexandra has sworn off marriage and knows how to put someone in their place who tries to make demands of her. But Ambrose has a way about him that she is finding hard to fight. Ambrose to is surprised at how much he is attracted to Alexandra. But how will things go when Alexandra finds out what Ambrose is up to. Can Ambrose become the man that Alexandra needs? Wow! This was another great book by Ms. Smith. Ms. Smith is one of my favorite authors and when I see her name on a book I know I will be getting a great story! When a bet is placed and money is on the line, "gentlemen" will do anything to win, even ruin a young woman. Alexandra lives in the country to avoid an old flame who passed her over for an heiress but a wage has been placed for five thousand pounds to the man who publicly ruins her. Ambrose is the son of the one of Alex's father's closest friends. Ambrose has taken the duty upon himself to ruin Alex to stop others and less honorable men from having the chance. Ambrose and Alex may get on each other's nerves but they also challenge each other. They connect easily. When everything is out in the open, ruination falls on Alex but Ambrose does everything he can to save her and bring justice to her ruination. Their "courtship" was filled with deceit from the beginning but Alex and Ambrose also have honesty between them, a strong emotional connection and come to understand each other. This book was so romantic and sweet and fun to read with a good dose of drama and intrigue to keep my on my toes. I truly love these two characters. I was so into their story to see how they fall for each other and explore new things and to see their happy ever after. I am curious about Lord Darlington, Ambrose's estranged friend and Perdita, Alex's closest friend. Is there a future romance to be read? I cannot wait to find out.

In other news, I finally know who Lady Society is and I am ecstatic about it! For those who don't know, Lady Society is the head of gossip in the ton. She has all of the ears and eyes of the ton. She helps saves the day for Alex and Ambrose's relationship. I was so beyond curious to know who she is because she plays a part in of my favorite series the League of Rogue books that is also written by Lauren Smith. I didn't even realize how connected she was to the League and I already met and love her character from Smith's other series which I highly recommend. I am even more excited for the next book in the series. She does seem like the perfect fit and I love the connections between these two series.

Lauren Smith has brought another amazing book to my romance repertoire and I am so very excited to see what comes next!

I received this ARC via Netgalley.

I have never been this out of sync with all other reviewers. I am speechless (read-less?) by what I've seen in this book. In fact, I pretty much gave up on it by Chapter 3, a rarity for me since I know exactly what I'm getting into with these HR novels. But oh geez.
The whole premise is incredibly contrived, unbelievable, and disturbing- our 'hero' decides to save Alex (the heroine) from being ruined due to an ongoing bet by basically 'ruining' her himself. Then starts a series of 'she says no but means yes', 'I don't force women to do anything but I will gyrate against her while she's trying to escape and give graphic details about my intentions', 'I insist that she give up her 'no' routine admit her attraction'. Of course, the woman is all 'he's a scoundrel but he looks so hot in his buckskin breeches' (obviously paraphrasing slightly).
All semi-kidding aside, this author needs VERY SERIOUS education on principles of consent and rape culture. I get it, this was a time when people didn't give a shit about either but capturing the historical context is very different from glorifying it and expecting us to think it's so manly/hot for a woman to be treated this way. And since the premise is so unbelievable anyway, I find it hard to believe historical accuracy was highly valued. Instead, I am left wondering why this horrible male character is forged into a hero. We hear again and again about how he feels guilty for being forced to save the day, i.e. 'take her innocence' but that he feels bound to do it. WHAT?!? Why not just tell her about the bet?!? Why not just say you did it and lie?!? Why not act like a decent human being in general? And that contrived guilt trip doesn't even fit with his predatory ways. In the words of that era "this gentleman has no scruples about any disgraceful behaviour". For the first time in my life I wanted an HR book to end with the characters breaking up but alas, something tells me that didn't happen.

Smart, sexy and witty. That is what I love about Lauren Smith novels. This is the 2nd in The Seduction Series, the first one The Duelist's Seduction was a wonderful read and this one is just as fabulous!! Lauren writes compelling stories with fascinating, smart characters that kept me up half the night to finish this book.

Ambrose and Alex are too stubborn to see that the feelings they are experiencing for each other is different than any that they have felt before. Alex fell in love with a neighbor and thought they would live happily ever after, but he left her and married someone else. Her heart is broken and has no interest in courting, love or marriage. Ambrose is a self proclaimed rake who has no interest in innocent young ladies and plans never to get married.

I know what you are thinking, this is just another romance novel. You would be wrong! Lauren writing is captivating and addictive. I am a great admirer of her Historical Romance novels. She gives her characters free rein and when they get the bit between their teeth hang on for a funny, erotic and splendid read.

Word Origin and History for rakehell
n.
1540s, possibly an alteration (by association with rake (n.1) and Hell) of Middle English rakel (adj.) "hasty, rash, headstrong," probably from raken "to go, proceed," from Old English racian "to go forward, move, hasten," of unknown origin. Cf. rakeshame (n.) "one who lives shamefully" (1590s).

Ambrose is one of those men you absolutely hate until he does something so beyond anything you believe he is capable of, and then, you wonder why you didn't like him in the first place. And yes, I am guilty of just that. Ambrose is a "Rake" and just being seen with him could sully a woman's reputation. (Boy have times changed...LOL) When he sees a wager in the betting books over the seduction and ruination of the daughter of his father’s best friend, he knows he must intervene so he signs his name as the one who will do it. I'm not sure how he had planned for it to play out but I can guarantee that the way it did play out wasn't at all in his thoughts.

Book action was in London and the countryside 1821.

Ambrose had good looks, a sardonic grin, thought
himself "a permanent bachelor." He met Alexandra
at a country dance. She took certain measures when
he became fresh with her. Later he learned she was
daughter of his host the earl, James Westfall.

The hero's club, White's, had on the betting books
a substantial reward offered to the 1st man to seduce
the earl's daughter, Alex. The hero thought he'd
seduce her 1st before a man who had a reputation for
rough sex did. Huh? Ambrose was no 'choir boy.' We
readers were unclear: was the hero's former friend
Vaughn, nefarious or did he have good intentions?

^^^^^^ SPOILERS ^^^^^^

Ambrose thought to himself he wanted his sister to
be wooed by a man of character. Yet Ambrose showed
faulty character by seducing innocent Alex. Huh?

Ambrose said Vaughn was a "dangerous man" in his
warning to Alex. Yet Alex asked her BFF to temporarily
distract Vaughn. Huh? These inconsistencies affected
my book rating.

I was provided a copy to review

Absolutely amazing!! I highlighted so many favorite parts and lines from start to end. The moment they met I knew they were a perfect match even with the pranks that followed. I loved that when I thought everything was going great a twist was thrown in about the wager that I did not see coming. All of the characters are a bit surprising as you get to know them and a couple of more twists are in there. The ending was perfect with the whole book having that bit of fairy tale feeling.

Alex may be my favorite heroine of all time. She is not shy, very bold, and knows how to stop a man in his tracks when he tries something. I loved how she got along with her father and how open she was about things.

Ambrose was exactly like I thought he would be after meeting him the last book. He definitely is a rake, but there is a side of him that wants to protect people. I loved how he treated people and when set out to make things better.

Vaughn was one I wanted hate when he showed up, but as it went on he sounded like a pretty good guy really. The parts in the end with Lady Society really have excited and I want to know who she is.

Ambrose Worthing is a notorious London Rake. His only purpose of life is to bed as many beautiful women as he can. When he hears of a wage on ruining his father’s best friend daughter, he signs himself on the wage, aiming to protect the woman by winning the wage himself.

Lady Alexandra Rockford prefers lining in the country with her father, rather than going from one London ball to another as her mother does the whole season. She got her heart broken once and she intends not to suffer again. Looking for a husband in London is not what entertainment means to her.

“The Rakehell’s Seduction” is the second book in the Seduction series, however it can be read as stand alone. The story of the first book is covered briefly, through memories, thoughts or revelations of the heroes and there is no blank space left.

The story evolves on a past time England, where each high society Lady would attend balls and festivities over a whole season in her pursue to find the right husband. The author gives us a picture of that time, while in parallel describes how this was not always a girl’s dream. This is a very romantic story, with a savior hero and a proud heroine that eventually find love!

This is the story of Ambrose Worthing and Lady Alexandra Rockford.

Ambrose is a know rake. He’s arrogant and full of himself really … until he isn’t :) Alexandra is supposed to be our fair maiden …. Yeah, there’s nothing fair about this girl :) She is feisty and fiery and exactly what Ambrose needs to be brought to his knees!

I love this type of story-line! The bad boy hero, or in this case rake LOL who gets brought down to his knees by love **sweeeet**

In true Lauren Smith fashion there is a ton of quick wit and banter in the story and also tremendous heart. The story is just one huge *happy sigh* moment!

ARC Review: The Rakehell's Seduction (The Seduction Series) by Lauren Smith

It was so easy to dislike Ambrose, except when it wasn't. Contradicting statement? Yes, but that is the way that I felt. He hid his heart well, but when it came out to play, it set the whole novel on fire. Arrogant, decadent, seductive and brooding this man thrived on being a walking contradiction. When a secret bet puts Alexandra in his sights, his heavily guarded heart may not survive the blow. Alexandra at first glance seems naive in her views, but underneath all of the surface optimism lies a woman with an inner strength and hidden fire just waiting to find it's target. Ms. Smith loves to dole out surprises and with The Rakehell's Seduction she not only gave an enchanting story, she delivered characters that were as mesmerizing and complicated as the writer herself. Well done.

Fabulous read. Lauren Smith writes another successful, sensually exciting book! Exciting things always happen where a rake is concerned, but things get very interesting when a country miss shows up in White's infamous betting book. I'm a huge fan of Lauren Smith's books, and I hope you'll pick this one up to read cause I know you'll love it too.

Ambrose Worthing is determined that having his name on the betting books (prize- 5000 pounds) at White’s to ruin a young woman is the right thing. The prey is the young daughter of the man that was his father’s closest friend- a man that gave him love and comfort growing up. He believes that his ruination of this young woman will actually save her. We find this out in the first few pages of the book.

In this story Lauren Smith moves the reader through the emotions and the drama of two people who find themselves attracted to each other - but with different outcomes in mind. I found myself constantly wanting to ask Ambrose- “how’s this all working for you?” (Sarcastically, of course!)

I have read all the books in this series and have enjoyed each one. I highly recommend this one. You can read them in any order and get the same enjoyment as if you started with number one.

Lauren Smith always brings out her best, whether it's Historical, Contemporary, or BDSM - the stories are captivating and delicious. "The Rakehell's Seduction" is another winning Historical under her belt. She's created a scrappy and truly daring heroine, Alexandra Rockford. Who's also too gun-shy to from a failed relationship of the past, remaining resistant to move forward socially. The hero, Ambrose Worthing's well meaning, but not a "creative thinker" in his efforts to protect the heroine. There're a couple of other interesting secondary characters. One is the recurring character of Vaughn Darlington, the frenemy of Ambrose and Gareth in The Seduction series. Vaughn actually shows an honorable side of himself. There's Alex's best friend, Perdita Darby. She too isn't in a hurry to find a husband. But that's not to say she can't be swayed by a man who can fill out a pair of breeches. She's a hoot.
The premise of "The Rakehell's Seduction" is intriguing and is more tangled than one believes at first glance. Vaughn's solution to meet the requirements of the bet is ingenious. When he learns of some additional "data" he even becomes a little "romantic" about things. Alexandra's ploys to urge Ambrose to leave the estate are amusing, and her friend, Perdita, is always at the ready. Perdita is quick-witted and can verbally defend and block any man's advances. She's a pip. The only one who can best her is her mother. Strong secondary characters, a compelling storyline, magnetic main characters, and a brisk pace make "The Rakehell's Seduction" a great read.
"The Rakehell's Seduction" is a fun, sexy, and sweet romance. With its quick pace, charming characters, enthralling storyline, and its adorable and sexy romance it is irresistible. Lauren Smith's books feel character-centric and are spicy hot; no matter the genre. The Seduction series intertwines with the League of Rogues series with a revealing appearance by Lady Society. The infamous gossip columnist from The Quizzing Glass newspaper. "The Rakehell's Seduction" is wonderfully sexy and romantic losing none of it's historic feel.

The Rakehell's Seduction is a steamy exciting read. This story deals with the men in high society that love to place outrageous wagers and the fallout from one such wager. The author does a brilliant job of showing different sides to two men who have hard core rogue belief systems. Her uncanny ability to display them with somewhat softer sides without them losing the part of their character that attracted the reader to them in the beginning of the story is handled to perfection.

Incorporated into the story is the fun interaction between Ambrose and Alexandria which I found humorous. I thought Alex was outstanding in keeping Ambrose honest with her directness and no holds barred attitude.

Secondary characters Perdita, Alexandria's best friend, and Vaughn, a now enemy who used to be one of Ambrose's best friends, have some strong presences in the book leading me to believe that they will have their own story in future books to this series.

This story teaches one that things and people are not always what they appear, that anyone can change with the right incentive and if you truly love someone you will move heaven and earth to make things right. For me it also showed that sometimes justice comes in the most unusual way.

I give this 4 STARS for how it kept me absorbed in what was going on and at the same time chuckling.

Ambrose Worthing is no gentleman. He’s a proud cold-hearted rake who’s determined to stay a bachelor forever. He enjoys bedding a different woman every night without the risk of falling in love. When he hears about a wager, placed by Gerald Langley, over the seduction and public ruination of the daughter of his father’s best friend The Earl of Rockford, he knows he must intervene. Committing himself to the bet, he agrees to seduce Lady Alexandra Rockford, for her own good. He never expected the lady in question to be a beautiful, fiery creature who has passions of her own that call to his guarded heart.
Alexandra Rockford has sworn off men, her heart still broken from the false promises of a childhood sweetheart who left her to marry an heiress. When she stumbles into Ambrose outside of a country ball, she knows the rake is trouble. His smile, his touch, his forbidden kiss are all too tempting but being with him would ruin her. Determined to enjoy herself without falling in love, Alex can’t help but let her defences down with the too charming rake. However then she discovers Ambrose is seducing her to win a bet.
Another well written book by the author, I was drawn in to it from the first page. Ambrose is everything a rake should be, Alex is delightful & at their first meeting proves she’s no shrinking violet but felling him with her knee. Their verbal sparring is very entertaining & often had me chuckling. Their attraction to each other simmers & then sizzles. The lengths Ambrose went to win Alex was touching & definitely a case of when a rake fell he tumbled!

A wager for the ruination of the daughter of his father's best friend brings out what little decency renowned rake Ambrose Worthing has left as he sets out to win the wager in the name of protecting an innocent. Lady Alexandra Rockford cast aside by her fiancé for a better prospect has resigned herself to being a spinster when suddenly the temptation of a smooth talking libertine awakens feelings that she knows she should keep locked away. Unexpected twists of fate soon take a simple bet and raise the stakes to include everyone's hearts.

A despicable act done with good intentions seems contradictory and unbelievable unless it is a story devised by Lauren Smith. In book two of the Seduction series, Ambrose Worthing tests the limits of morality as he relentlessly pursues Lady Alexandra, yet through clever character development his seduction comes off as romantic and ultimately genuine. Complex, this author never avoids exposing the flaws of her depictions to their advantage. A tantalizing cache of secrets and Ms. Smiths flair for bold drama made The Rakehell’s Seduction intensely absorbing and a Regency must!

*While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone.*

The Rakehell’s Seduction by Lauren Smith
Seduction Series #2

The characters in this book grew on me the further I read. I found Ambrose to be rather abrupt and straightforward in stating what he wanted from Alexandra and I found her to be a bit naïve …well…sort of naïve. I am not sure anyone would really come right out and say or do some of things Ambrose did or that a woman would fall for him as quickly as Alexandra did BUT this is fiction and a story to entertain – and it did. Things became more complicated when Darlington arrived on the scene and his machinations were put into play. I kind of want to read more about Darlington as he seems an intriguing character. This was a story with a happy ending and a few twists and turns taken to get there.

Thank you to NetGalley and Barclay Publicity for the book. This is my honest review.
