When a sleepy southern coastal town is crowned the Hollywood of the East worlds collide and sparks fly, especially for two casting directors who end up playing the roles of accidental rivals.
It’s not just that the town isn’t quite big enough for the two of them. Violet Davenport brings deep roots, local allies, and old-fashioned Southern charm to the table. Nate Fowler’s got deep pockets, tech knowhow, and a family that’s worked in movies since the silent film days.
For their business—and their hearts—to survive, they'll have to overcome both a bitter hostility and a sweet insta-attraction.
In this enemies-to-lovers, new-in-town, one-night-stand improbable love story, a boss lady and a Hollywood nerd find that you only get as good as you give.

8/18/2022 - ALC of the audiobook. Maxine Mitchell & Jack Calihan!
6/16/2022 - While the Carolina Classics series is a loose “spin-off” from Grey’s Boston Classics series (both sets of MCs meet in the prequel, I’ll Stand By You) - you could start here and be fine. New location, new folks, new connections.
Grey mixes it up a bit and this series isn’t interconnected standalones. Each book focuses on a different couple, but you’ll meet all the MCs and there’s definitely some story lines (drama!) that will weave throughout the whole series. I love these kinds of series where you can settle in and really get to know all the characters. 🥰
That doesn’t mean that Violet & Nate are cheated out of their chance to shine. Such a fun couple to get to know as individuals and together in a relationship. After an amazing one-night-stand, a family feud immediately pits these two against each other. Working for competing casting companies suddenly turns lovers to enemies. I really enjoyed the way Grey brought them back together, helped Nate find his real passion, and Vi become a standout in her own right.
Most of the drama comes from Nate’s family, Vi’s friends, and a hurricane. Coastal folks know the chaos created when a tropical storm upgrades at the last moment. Violet’s lifelong friends: Dani, Whitney, Ford, & Sully are also weathering their own storms. While Nate & Vi get a wonderful HFN, a big announcement ends the story on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to see who gets the next book.
Narration: I love Maxine Mitchell, but this was my first time listening to Jack Calihan. They both did a terrific job. I really liked both their subtle southern accents for the appropriate characters and then switching to a more neutral one for Nate & his family. Plus all the unique voices for a fairly large cast of regularly speaking characters. Calihan has a deep & somewhat gravely voice, yet I still enjoyed his voice for the female characters. A great listen all around.
I received an advanced copy of the audiobook from Home Cooked Books and am leaving an honest review.
I really liked this book! I have enjoyed all of Karen Grey’s work that I have read so far and this book continued that trend. I thought that the 90’s setting was well done and enjoyed going back to a time when answering machines were more common than cell phones. I was completely taken with these characters and was eager to see Violet and Nate figure out how to make things work.
Violet and Nate have such great chemistry from the start. I just knew that these two needed to be with each other. It was too bad that they soon learned that they were rivals because of their jobs. Violet just recently risked everything to be a full-time casting agent. Nate shows up in town to run his family’s casting agency and to steal work from Violet. They still couldn’t help but be drawn to each other and it doesn’t take long for their rivalry to become a partnership.
Violet and Nate were such great characters. As I made my way through this book, it soon became obvious that these were good people caught up in someone else’s drama. I really liked the fact that they were there for each other when they were most needed. Violet’s group of friends were also key players in the story and I really liked getting to know them. I am crossing my fingers that we will get to see more of them in future books.
I would definitely recommend this book to others. This was a fantastic romance that kept me glued to the pages. This is a great place to start with this author’s books since it is the start of a new series even though all of her books work well as stand-alone novels.
I received a digital review copy of this book from the author.
What a great start to a new series! It was a pleasure from beginning to end. The story was well paced, with little events that moved the romance forward in a seamlessly manner.
The author has a way with male characters in touch with their feelings. Nate, like most of her previous heroes, isn’t an alpha male, but isn’t a pushover either. He’s just a man who values his feelings and isn’t afraid of expressing them. It influences his romantic relationship with Vi, of course, but also the way he interacts with other people. A lovely man indeed.
On the opposite side, Violet is a bit older than Nate, and is bossy and strong. Mostly because she’s fueled with passion and empathy, and some residual abandonment issues. She freely gives the best of herself to people, often forgetting herself in the process. She was an interesting character.
Their romance was just steamy enough to see the attraction between them, while they slowly forge stronger connections. They completed each other in the most perfect way, two puzzle pieces that fit. I loved it.
The whole casting/movie industry background was fascinating. As Violet’s and Nate’s job, they did it quite differently, while Nate’s father provided yet another way. The people working in and around a show/movie, the interactions between the various players in a crew, the writing and planning… You get a feel of what it’s like to work in the movie industry.
And the 90’s feeling? Amazing. I’m the right age to remember all the references to that era, and it was delightful. As were the short transitions at the beginning of each chapter.
Well written, with great characters and a good story, this series starts with a bang.
Quickie
- Series: Carolina classics #1 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #romcom #90’s #nostalgia #one night stand #enemies to lovers - Triggers: N/A - Main couple: Violet Davenport & Nate Fowler - Hotness: 3/5 - Romance: 4/5 - + I dig a man in touch with his feelings - – the friends drama felt like a repeat of what happened in the prequel, without anything new
EDIT: the audiobook was nothing like what I was expecting. Both narrators were good, but I'd have never thought of them for a romcom. I felt they darkened the mood, bringing more into the little dramas than into the lighter atmosphere. Feelings were there though, and they certainely did the job.
Karen Grey fans are going to love this series! Its a bit different than her previous series Boston Classics in that it feels more like an epic tale written over several books instead of a standalone book. Hang on to your kindle and try not to throw it when you get to the ending, I promise its worth it!!
Violet's hot one night stand turns out to be her rival in this enemies-to-lovers romance! Nate is looking to find his purpose in life and a place where he fits in. Loved how they fought everywhere but the bedroom. Bossy Nate is HOT!!!
What you'll get in this book: More of these 5 friends from the prequel novella, Signed, Sealed & Delivered. Focus is mainly on Violet and her love interest, Nate. Set up of the next book, Hold on to Me. A cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more right now (well done, Karen! You got me hooked!!) You'll get a HFN for Violet & Nate.
What I loved about this book: The relationship between these friends and the family they've created. I really wanted to be the 6th friend in this group! You'll get all the 90s lovin references throughout that had me wanting to listen to my greatest hits Playlist. Loved the setting of coastal North Carolina.
I know I'm not the only one is impatiently waiting on the next book to find out what happens next.
**Audio Update **
Jack Calihan and Maxine Mitchell nailed their roles as Nate and Violet! As much as I enjoyed this eyeball read, I absolutely loved how the narrators brought this book alive for me.
This was a lot of fun! Felt like reading a 90’s drama show. I really like the characters. The spice I will admit was cringy and I laughed a few times at some dialogue used. (Looking at you “butter bean” 😂)
Its just such a fun time and its giving me all the summer vibes I need in these cold times
Very excited to dive into the next boom cause that cliffhanger has got me intrigued!
I don’t want to wait…..to gush about this book! You Get What You Give by Karen Grey was a nostalgic romantic throwback to my teenage years that did crazy good things to my heart. Set in the fictional small coastal N.C. town of Wallington in the late 1990s, we are introduced to Hollywood hottie, Nate, and fierce Carolina girl, Violet. Wallington is considered to be the Hollywood of the East and is the location filming the up-and-coming T.V. series, Lawson’s Reach. (sound familiar?) After a one-night stand, Nate and Violet find themselves in quite the complicated predicament, and thus, the steamy tension builds! I loved Violets’s determined, passionate, and dedicated spirit as she went after her dreams and found room in her heart to love Nate! I loved Nate’s charismatic, caring persona as he strived to get out of his father’s shadow and find his true love for Violet and desires in life with his career. Plus, Violet and Nate have this amazing chemistry right from the start, and it continues to build and burn brighter throughout the entire book!
Overall, I loved this book! If you are a fan of a retro romance with a Hollywood casting hunk who loves to surf, a fierce boss lady on a mission, a one night stand that turns into so much more, enemies to lovers vibes, small coastal towns, childhood friendships that are tested, trips to the beach, misunderstandings, Dawson’s Creek allusions, dangerous hurricanes, supportive grandparents, delicious steamy times, and a HEA that will a leave a happy smile on your face, then you will love Nate and Violet’s romance. However, that ending?! I can’t wait for more from Karen Grey!
**Audio Review** Maxine Mitchell and Jack Calihan narrate this audiobook. Jack Calihan, a new to me narrator, was the perfect fit for our Hollywood native hero, Nate. Jack was fantastic showcasing Nate’s charismatic and dedicated persona in a raspy swoony tone! Maxine Mitchell was absolute perfection as brave, determined Violet. Not to mention her male voice for Nate, was oh so dreamy! Plus, I loved that Karen carried on her tradition of adding some special sound effects, that create just the right vibe for the mood and setting of the book!
Violet's finally finding some luck with her casting business. Getting to cast a show is a dream come true. Then she finds out the gorgeous guy she had an even more gorgeous night with is her new rival. His family is Hollywood casting royalty and is opening a branch in her town. HER town. How can she possibly compete with Nate's family legacy, with their money and connections? Is there a way she and Nate can make rivalry into a bona fide relationship?
Nate's been looking for acceptance and love from his father his entire life. Moving to this small town to open a new branch of their company is just another way of trying to gain those things. But things get a little, shall we say...derailed, when he finds out the woman he can't get out of his head runs a rival casting firm. Now he just has to find a way to run his branch, convince Violet he's not the enemy, and figure out what his place in life is.
Ah the 90s...You Get What You Give brings to mind all the goodness, the warmth of that decade. I was in my 20s during the 90s, so this series is giving me all the fun memories I have of that time period. Violet and Nate are so lovable, such a perfect fit for that era. There's some heat, a bit of drama, and lots of interesting characters that surround our adorable couple. I'm already giddy with anticipation for the next in this series, Hold On To Me.
I really enjoyed the characters Violet and Nate. The chemistry between them are amazing. This book brought me back to my teenage years with some of the nostalgia within it. It had some humor, and a some spice. Being I am a Carolina girl this hit home for me with a lot of things brought up within the book. This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed it. I felt like I was right their with the characters during the beach trips and such.
Thank you NetGalley and Karen Grey for the ebook ARC.
When local casting director Violet Davenport is dumped by the wannabe actor who had been working as her receptionist, her pride is more hurt than her feelings. She's indulging in a glass of wine and the comfort of her friends at the bar of the Rumrunner Hotel that evening when she meets hotel guest Nathaniel "Nate" Fowler. After they spend the night together, Violet never expects to see Nate again, so she's shocked to run into him outside her office building the following morning and learn that his father, a top Hollywood casting director, has sent him to open a satellite office that will directly compete against her fledgling business. For his part, Nate had no idea that Violet's business even existed, or that his father's decision to open the office was part of a family feud with his uncle in New York. When he realizes that Violet is the one who will suffer instead of his uncle, Nate does his best to make amends, but can he persuade her to trust him after their rocky start?
I really enjoyed this funny, sweet, and heartwarming story, which featured likeable, well-developed characters and a well-crafted rivals-to-lovers romance. Violet and Nate were both dealing with a fair amount of emotional baggage related to their parents, though they chose to deal with it in completely different ways. That difference was responsible for a lot of the conflict between them. After Violet's parents dumped her on her grandparents when she was just a little girl, she came to the conclusion that the only person she could rely on was herself and became a workaholic. Nate, on the other hand, decided that he would never be like his workaholic father and bounced around from job to job, never settling in one place for more than a few months before arriving in Wallington. In the end, they found a good balance as a couple and really seemed to bring out the best in each other, which made it very easy to cheer them on to their HEA.
The book's late 1990s setting was a lot of fun and felt authentic based on what I remember from back then. I'm really looking forward to future books set in this world, especially after the craziness of this book's last chapter. There's so much going on with Violet's friends and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
I highly recommend "You Get What You Give" for all fans of contemporary(-ish) romance and romantic comedy. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book of the series!
*Review copy provided by the author. All opinions expressed are my own.
Dust off your MMMbop cassette single and spritz on your Gap Grass fragrance spray we are going back to the 90s…
When I say I loved this book I mean I LOVED it!!! It really did remind me of a 90s dramedy where one episode in an ensemble cast focuses on one couple. And that couple was Nate Fowler and Violet Davenport ❤️
Violet Davenport is building a business as a casting director in the little coastal town of Wallington NC. Having an opportunity to cast all the extras for a new hit show has put her on a track to success…until another casting director opens an office next door and she loses 9 months worth of business. Imagine her shock and anger when she discovers the man who opened said office and is hurting career is also the man she had recently met and had one HOT one night stand with…..
This was such a delightful read. I loved every page. Nate and Violet had such great chemistry. I loved the dedication Violet has to the town and people in it and that Nate finally finds a place for himself. All of these characters are fantastic, relatable, and fun. Karen Grey does such a wonderful job setting a 90s vibe. I adore the fun throwback feel of her books and the characters she creates. You Get What You Give has all of the cute, steamy, funny and dramatic charm that make a irresistible Rom-Com I loved it! I am completely smitten by the Carolina Classics series so far. I love this group of friends and I cannot wait for the next book!!! 5/5⭐️
UPDATE FOR AUDIO
I loved this book when I read it, well listening is even better!! I adored the snippets of the Lawsons Reach script at the beginning of every chapter with the sort of theme music it was just another element of that 90s throwback vibe that I enjoy so much. Maxine Mitchell and Jack Calihan really shined in their performances. I give all credit to voice actors, to play these characters that have such unique personalities, that go through so many emotions from laughter to heartbreak, and everything in between, and have that really translate without the visual of body language or facial expressions is just plain talent and these two wonderful narrators have that talent in spades.
This was such a fun, delightful listen and I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this book and if you have the opportunity I'd highly suggest the audio version
Review copy was received from Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Now we have Violet's book, You Get What You Give. I really liked Violet in the prequel and even more in her own book. Violet is hard-working, capable and kind. She is a lot more straightforward about her thoughts and feelings than most people, and it makes her relationships easier in that people don't have to guess. She handled all her curve balls with poise and generosity, no matter how they might hurt her. This allowed her to move along with her relationships and make the best of every situation.
I didn't think quite as highly of Nate, although he is a couple years younger. He really hasn't had to work as hard because of family money and businesses. Some things may have been harder for him though because he hasn't really had the family support and interest so some things were tedious for him. From the beginning, he did do his best to care about Violet and her feelings.
I really enjoyed this and the development of both their careers and their personal lives. Their situation in careers is tricky. I think they handled things really well and honorably. It's the only way they would survive in a smaller community. They were great as a couple and also their work strengths and interests complemented each other so well. I would say they are happy for now but there is more to develop with their families and business, which I hope we get to see as a sideline in future books.
What starts out as a spicy one night stand turned out to be a life changing experience for both Violet & Nate! This sweet throw back romance takes place in a small coastal town in North Carolina. Violet, a fierce, hardworking, girl-boss recently started her own business that is just making ends meet. Nate, a hunky surfer dude comes from a wealthy family and wants to make a name for himself within his own family. Nate is unknowingly threatening to take Violet's livelihood away but they work together to make sure that they both come out on top. Through all of their ups & downs, they discover just how much they have in common!
I absolutely loved this nostalgic romance! It definitely takes me back in time! I loved the characters, they are very relatable. I loved the bantering back and forth between Violet & Nate (as well as the others). And while I loved Violet's spunkiness and the way she cared for her family/friends, Nate was my absolute favorite character in this book. He stood his ground for what was right.
This was a great start to the Carolina Classics series! I cannot wait for the next book to see what is in store for this crew!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Karen Grey for allowing me to read this advanced copy for my honest review of the book.
(Audio Review) Following a one-night stand, Violet and Nate’s amazing first meeting quickly turn sour when they are thrust right into a family feud that pits them against each other in their competing casting companies.
It was such a pleasure to be in this world with these characters. Violet and Nate managed to charm me from the very beginning, and I enjoyed seeing their development as characters. Plus, we got to experience some late 90s vibes in this nostalgic insta attraction-to-enemies-to-lovers story.
Jack Calihan and Maxine Mitchell did amazingly with the narration. I especially loved Maxine’s use of a southern accent in this; it added to the characterisation of Violet as she is from a southern coastal town in Carolina. Both narrators brought the characters to life. This was truly a pleasure to listen to!
I was provided an advanced reading/listening copy of this book. However, all opinions shared are my honest thoughts about this book.
When I heard Karen Grey talking about this book on a recent live with Erin Mallon (check Erin’s IG for the playback) I knew I had to listen. Set in the late 90s with connections to my teenage heart’s favourite show, Dawson’s Creek? Sold!
It did not disappoint. Violet and Nate sign up for a one-night-stand. But get so much more than they bargained for. It turns out they are both casting directors vying for the same show. That instant attraction turns into a story of rivals to lovers that will have you glued to your device wanting to know how they are going to overcome their differences. I loved that this focused on the behind the scenes staff as I often feel like they are unsung heroes in the world of movies and TV. You get a good mixture of romance, backstory, friendships and family dynamics. It is a heartwarming and sweet story with some ‘moments’ that will have you thinking otherwise.
I loved this friend group. I need all of their stories and now! You can read more about them in the prequel ‘I’ll Stand By You.’ I am so ready to read more about them. Especially after that ending. Karen Grey knew what she was doing!
Fans of Dawson’s Creek will smile every time they notice a connection…and there are a lot. Nothing overpowering, but more little things that make you remember certain episodes and scenes. Since finishing this book my Spotify has been filled with 90s music, and I regret nothing.
Maxine Mitchell and Jack Calihan perform this book in dual narration. They gave each character a unique sound and switched from male to female characters with ease and the change was obvious. Maxine’s male voice is all the things. This is the first time I’ve listened to Jack, and I thought he was great.
I was sent an advance copy of this book, and I’m voluntarily leaving this honest review
This was my first Karen Grey book, I was fortunate to get a advance listener copy in exchange for this honest review - and I enjoyed it so much. To me this was a strong 3.5 star book (my ranking is 3 is good, 4 is great, 5 has to BLOW ME AWAY) and a great start to a new series.
Set to the backdrop of a Dawson's Creek inspired TV show, we meet Summer and Nate at a bar - where I'm sure most of the 90's dating scene was set. Before Snapchat and text messaging and using the internet to Google sleuth your next date. Just two people attracted to each other and acting on it.
Cue the next day when Summer, who runs a local casting company, finds that Nate is not only her new competition in town, but he's stolen her main income generating production.
What I enjoyed about this story is Karen's ability to weave enemies to lovers in a low angst environment. You were able to allow their combative nature to breath and get to know the ensemble cast of friends (whom I'm assuming will be featured in subsequent books in this series) without feeling overwhelmed by all the goings on. You were able to focus on Summer's issue with personal abandonment and feeling like she's the only one that will take care of herself and Nate's issues with always feeling overlooked by his father while simultaneously still seeking his acceptance.
Maxine Mitchell and Jack Calihan were phenomenal in this audiobook performance, proving to me that Jack is made more for contemporary romance than I originally gave him credit for.
Interested to see how the second book in the series plays out as we left on a bit of a cliffhanger for a side character.
This was such a great romance listen! Nate and Violet shared a romance and chemistry that just couldn’t be denied. I love me a great small-town romance and enemies-to-lovers romance are my jam so YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE by Karen Grey was right up my alley! Romantic, sexy, and full of feels. This book did not disappoint.
Narration was performed by Jack Calihan and Maxine Mitchell. The casting was clearly spot on as these two effortlessly bring the story to life. Credit worthy.
Violet left her teaching job to follow her dreams and opened up her own casting business based on promised work for the new Lawson’s Reach TV show filming in town. Nate just moved from Hollywood where his family is a powerhouse in the casting industry. He’s agreed to open a branch of the business in town, unaware that Vi is already handling the local business. Unfortunately a family feud between Nate’s father and uncle put Vi and Nate at odds; however, their mutual attraction and a few outside forces, bring the pair together.
You Get What You Give is the first in Ms. Grey’s Coastal Carolina series, centering on five friends who grew up in a small beach community. Set in the 1990’s the story references pop culture and everyday items from the decade; most notably, Dawson’s Creek, which is mirrored in the fictional Lawson’s Reach. The book shares the journey of Vi and Nate, but the other four friends (Sully, Ford, Whiney, and Dani) are a big part of the story.
NOTE: My review contains a few mild spoilers.
Overall, I enjoyed Nate and Vi’s story. The pair must overcome several issues, including the family drama that puts them on opposing sides. Since we are privy to both character’s POVs, we know that each is not only attracted to the other, but genuinely likes them as a person, outside of the casting business. While Vi has every right to hate Nate, her friend Sully helps her see past the surface and look deeper at Nate the individual. I did love the couple and how they learned to communicate, and I think that they have potential.
With that said, I have a few issues with the overall story. First, there is a lot of drama in the friend group, including an unresolved love triangle between Whitney, Ford, and Sully, which takes up a lot of space in the book. It adds tension and drama, but takes away from Nate and Vi’s journey. All five of the friends seem to have some serious issues causing them to come off as immature and whiny. They have no communication skills and seem to run from their problems. Even Vi attacks Nate rather than leaning into him and telling him she loves him.
I also have an issue with the entire last chapter of the book. From the opening indicating what would happen, to Dani’s obsessing over a friend’s shocking news, to the cliffhanger ending. What we didn’t see is Nate and Vi together and settled back in NC getting their HEA. The entire ending left me feeling unsettled and unsure.
Narration: The story is shared via the alternating first person POVs of Nate and Vi, with multiple POV shifts each chapter. Maxine Mitchell (MM) uses a slight southern accent for her females from NC. Sometimes I had trouble distinguishing between Vi, Whitney, and Dani when they were all talking together, but overall, she has a large array of voices. MM pitches her voice lower for males and does a very good job sounding like a cast of many.
Jack Calihan (JC) has a very deep voice, sounding much older than a 25-year-old. While his voice is pleasing for the narrator portions of his performance, his cadence is a bit slower than MM. He does attempt lighter, softer voices for females, but it still sounds like a guy doing a female voice. He adds in accents and adjusts his dialogue somewhat effectively for gender and age.
In the end, You Get What You Give is a solid start to what could be a very entertaining series. I enjoyed meeting the characters and exploring their quaint coastal community. With so many moving parts and much unfinished business, I look forward to the next story and finding out more about this group of friends.
You Get What You Give is the start of a new series that's set in 1999, 10 years after the author's previous Boston Classics series. The new series is set in coastal NC in a beach community that is fast becoming a favored location for movie and TV shoots that need East Coast local color. Violet, who previously taught drama at the high school, helped direct local theater productions, and has deep roots and contacts in the local theater arts community, decides to quit her job at the school, and open a casting agency specializing in securing local talent for the various film shoots. Although her professional gambit is going well, her personal life could use some help, so when she meets Nate, an apparent out-of-town visitor at a local bar one Sunday night, she decides that a one night, no-strings hookup might be just what she needs. Much to her surprise, the next day, as she's opening up her office at the local film studio, who does she run into, but Nate, who turns out to be the representative of a rival West Coast casting agency.
Sparks fly professionally and personally as Violet and Nate initially start out as lovers, then bitter rivals, then slowly get to know each other and realize that their initial attraction was no fluke. On the surface, they seem to be total opposites. Violet is a woman who is deeply rooted in and devoted to her community. She has close forged friendships and personal/professional relationships with just about everyone she has met. Nate skims the surface, never committing to anyone or anything, searching for connections and a place to call his own, but not sure how to bring them about. Yet somehow, they are a great couple, each bringing their own strengths to their blooming relationship.
I loved that although the initial set up of the book was giving off an enemies to lovers vibe, in fact, Nate very quickly realized that he didn't want to hurt Violet and instead tried hard to figure out a way to keep his family happy, accomplish his business goals, and not completely destroy Violet while he was doing so. Violet was pretty angry with him initially, but she also faced the situation with maturity and a determination to accomplish her own goals. There was also a good introduction to Violet's core friendship group, who will form the basis of the rest of the series and I'm looking forward to reading their stories also. I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Book 1 in the Carolina Classics series, is incredible! I have loved absolutely every book Karen has written, and this is definitely one of her best (I still adore the Boston Classics, but this is so good)!
It picks up about 7-8 years after the prequel novella (I’ll Stand By You, about the friendship of the five), and is about Violet living her dream of being a casting director in the Carolina town of Wallington. The current big project she’s casting for is Lawson’s Reach (a take on Dawson’s Creek), but suddenly, that cute guy she met at the bar last night moves into the office next door and happens to be a rival casting director for a competing company…
Now, cute guy Nate goes from being a one night stand with potential for more, to being the new work enemy, for a company looking to drive Vi completely out of business. His father and uncle’s rivalry is actually at fault, and hopefully something can be done to fix things before it’s too late for everything…
As always, Karen’s writing is at the top of her game, and this is an absolute must-read.
I definitely recommend picking up the prequel novella first (I’ll Stand By You), so you get a bit of the group of friend’s background and what the boys are fighting about and why the five each went their own way so many years ago, but this is a complete stand-alone if you opt not to read it. You’ll be hooked and like me, chomping at the bit for the next book in the series! There’s also a novella in the Smartasses anthology that features 2 of the show writers, and runs concurrently with the timeline (What Happens in Carolina), as both stories are more fun if you have the background of each, together!
A top fave narrator brings another brilliant performance to Vi (Maxine Mitchell, a very long-time fave!), and a new-to-me male narrator who brought Nate to life in a fantastic fashion (Jack Calihan) - I’m definitely looking forward to hearing a lot more from him!
A brilliant story and even better when re-listened to with the audio!! This is a definite must-listen book for everyone, and I highly recommend you hop on over to Audible to pick it up today!
I received an advance copy from Karen Grey and Home Cooked Books, and this is my honest feedback - thank you so much Karen! It was even better the second time around!
“Every day with her is an adventure that I don’t want to end.”
Break out the ice cream and old episodes of Dawson’s Creek and settle in for a nostalgic ride in You Get What You Give. This is the first book in the Carolina Classics series and tells Violet and Nate’s story. This enemies to lovers, workplace romance is full of charm, nostalgia, romance, and friendship. It’s so much fun.
“I actually felt a connection to this guy. One of those we-must-have-known-each-other-in-another-life kind of things.”
Violet is so feisty and full of so much heart. She’s determined to follow her dreams and prides herself on a job well-done. She’s always there for her family and friends, but underneath, she has fears of being abandoned.
“For the first time in my life, I feel like I belong. Not in my family, as I’d hoped to prove by coming here. But here in Wallington. With Violet, in this town.”
Nate has never felt valued by his family and has never felt like he belonged. When he finds himself in the small coastal town, he adapts quickly to the slower pace of life and finds the home that he never had.
“I’ve finally found a place that feels like home to me and a person that I want to make a home with.”
These two rival casting directors are great together. They challenged and complemented one another beautifully. They helped each other grow and realize what is really important in life. Plus they gave each other the strength to be brave enough to embrace the future they envisioned.
The audio was narrated by Maxine Mitchell and Jack Calihan. Maxine is always great and she brought Violet’s sass and heart to life perfectly. Jack was a new narrator to me and he was fantastic as well. You could feel all of Nate’s emotions in Jack’s narration of him. I loved re-experiencing the book through these two narrators and they brought a new dimension to the story which made me enjoy it even more.
You Get What You Give is an adorable story that is brimming with strong, lovable characters and a sense of home, family and belonging. I love this group of friends and can’t wait to see how the rest of their stories play out.
Fantastic book one in the Carolina Classics series. The crew is still somewhat together trying to adult and figure out their lives. Some are trying to break away while others are fighting to keep them all together.
Nate and Violets initial meeting is not hot hot…one night, no strings. However, that may come back to bite both of them.
Violet is a tough, determine woman who will not let anyone stand in way. I love her drive and perseverance regardless of the obstacles that come her way. She’s been dealt an unfortunate blow to her business but she is doesn’t back down. Her grandparents are adorable - they run the local in where Violet is helping out with daily tasks. Between her workahokic tendencies, her job and helping at the inn the girl has no time to herself.
Nate is new to town, doesn’t necessarily want to be there or do the job he’s been asked to do. There are some underlying factors that he has not been made aware of which will make his job and relationship with others challenging.
Violet and Nate are both facing challenges that they did not anticipate. They both have some baggage they are carrying around and realize they can help one another.
I really enjoyed the smexy tension, banter and wonderful personalities. Karen did a great job writing engaging and realistic characters.
I also loved the fact this book took place in the 90’s…reminding us of life before cell phones, gps and the interweb. So important to know a phone number or street address at that time. :)
Favorite quote from the book: “I’ve got a Free Willy situation to deal with.”
Jack Calihan and Maxine Mitchell nailed the narration of this book. They each brought personality, emotion and individual voices to each character.
I have really really enjoyed Violet's and Nate's love story... When Vi ends up one night in Nate's hotel room she couldn't have imagined that the very next day they will become competitors... Both they run casting offices but there's only room for one... in the small town Vi lives Anger, disappointment but also lust are some of the feelings they both feel... which will the feeling that will win? Vi and Nate is a awesome couple... with unbelievable chemistry... and sexual tense... Vi is a very strong character with values... she loves her friends as family , she loves her job and her grandparents and just can't stop thinking of Nate... Nate on the other hand isn't the bad boy with the classic meaning of the word... he love to surf... he is trying to fit to his family and he has some problems with settling down to one place for more than a few months... but also loves Vi ... one hurricane is it possible to help them solve their problems? Violet's and Nate's story is a sweet rom-com story. The kind of story that makes you feel good... makes you feel comfortable and of course makes you fall in love... Plus I can't wait for the second book because the end was... something that I didn't really expect... Highly recommended by me ... for sure ♥️
After a one night stand, Violet Davenport’s life is thrown into a spin, when her dream job as a casting director vanishes. It appears that Nate Fowler, is not what she expected him to be when she spent the night with him. He turns into her arch nemesis, when his father’s business threatens to take away her job in the small town on Wallington NC, where she had hoped to establish her career. Yet their attraction might be worth more than their jobs. This was such a great read and I loved not only the intense relationship between Nate and Violet, but also Violet’s friends, who I imagine will appear in future stories, or I at least hope so. Nate and Violet’s relationship simmers throughout the story and it was lovely to see their trust grow as they work together. I look forward to reading more in this series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is so much fun, yes I laughed but not just fun in a LOL sort of way. But in a look back and remember things from your youth, or maybe your parents late teens and early twenties. Anyway you look at it the references alone make this book a spectacular read. Movies, music, TV shows, quotes and characters I'd forgotten about or couldn't remember and had to look up all stopped to say hello. That's the kinda extra fun this book brought. But the characters themselves are wonderful, they're working and living, trying to maintain friendships and find their forevers. But as the books themselves are a little quirky so each character. And I couldn't love it more. I can't wait to read the next! I have voluntarily left this review.
A 90’s nostalgic romance The first book in the series is focused on Violet & Nate, with each of the five friends having a bit role which I’m sure will expand with each book and the story lines progress. Violet & Nate story is a should have been one night stand turned into work enemies to lovers. The couple get their Happy For Now ending and the story ends on a cliffhanger to carry on to book 2. There’s instant chemistry, some heat, drama, and a cast of interesting and varied characters. A group of five life long friends navigating life in their 20’s while their friendships are tested. I enjoyed the 90’s vibe, the banter, the characters, and the plot. I recommend reading the prequel novella first (I’ll Stand By You) so you get the friends background.
I am a fan of Karen Grey's Boston Classics series, so I was excited to read the new Carolina Classics set in North Carolina in the late 1990s. There are extra layers of fun for readers who are familiar with Dawson's Creek, but it's also written in a way that you don't have to know it to understand the references.
You Get What You Give stands alone in the sense that this is Nate and Violet's HFN, though I was glad I read I'll Stand By You to have some additional background on the characters, and there is definitely more to a bigger storyline that continues into the next book.
Update 8/31/22: I was able to listen to the audiobook and the performances by Maxine Mitchell and Jack Calihan were fabulous. The audio enhances the story, both with the narrators conveying emotions and with some throwback sound effects.
I received a copy of this book at my request, and the opinions here are my own.
This is book 1 in Grey's Carolina Classics series. Told in dual point of view with dual narration which came together perfectly for this well written romance. A sweet romance with a bit of heat. Our main characters are Violet and Nate whose chemistry is instant. However work circumstances and a family fued interfere with a promising start to the magnetism these two feel. Will Nate's charm win over the workaholic Violet or will they be destined to remain rivals?
I received a free copy of this read and I provided this voluntary review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read.
Their one night stand doesn’t end like they thought. Violet just opened a casting agency and is barely making it. Nate comes from money and is in the same business. Will they put their differences aside and work together for the greater good.
