The professional is about to get very personal.

Clover Bennett’s motto is Good Things Happen to Those Who Hustle. After a string of toxic relationships, Clover decides to focus her energy on the one thing she can control, her career. When she lands a high-profile job as press secretary at the White House, Clover sees her years of hard work paying off.

The goal is to establish herself as a DC power player, with no room for distractions. Well, maybe just one … the handsome bachelor occupying the White House. President Theodore Elmsworth is charismatic, brilliant, and witty. Clover finds herself reluctantly drawn in by the intoxicating proximity to power his presence holds. The separation of work and play is forgotten when the president and Clover forge a friendship that flirts dangerously close to crossing the line.

Clover is determined to keep her relationship status as committed … to work. But President Elmsworth is interested in getting Clover to drop her color-coded-three-ring binder and let her hair and inhibitions down. Unfortunately, flirting with the boss could end with Clover’s luck running out, placing her carefully-curated career in jeopardy.

After reading the synopsis of the book, I thought this would be something I’d enjoy because I LOVE scandal. After reading this book, my expectation were blown out the water. Once I started reading, I could not stop.

Now while I loved Clover, she did have her moment where I felt like homegirl was dragging it but then I realized I probably would too. Think about it, you worked all your life and finally land your dream job. Then you fall for your boss but he’s not a regular boss. HE’S THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Their relationship had the potential to blow up her entire career but I do wished she communicated her feelings more instead of retreating and hiding.

Whew and Teddy?! Mr President, down bad over Clover. From the beginning to the bitter end. Now he hurt my feelings during their last argument and I do think Clover was owed a better apology but that would imply he actually apologized for calling her out her name.

In the end, I really enjoyed this book. It gave me the feel of Scandal while still being unique and funny. I just wish Teddy was more understanding of Clover’s reservations about being with a man of his stature.

I had a ball reading this and I can’t wait for the author’s next release.

the Monica Lewinsky joke wasn’t a great start, pursuing a subordinate is a big ick and being the most powerful man in the country only made it worse ESPECIALLY after the “this is the room Clinton had relations with that woman” bit. But her dating a white man who works at Fox News was the last straw. I had to go.

Figure of Speech was such a fun read! This is the romance between Theodore “Teddy” Elmsworth, the newly elected President of the United States, and Clover Bennett, his newly hired Press Secretary. Teddy and Clover knew each other years ago when she worked on his senator campaign and are now reconnected in their new roles. Teddy has always had a crush on Clover even after they fell out of touch. Meanwhile, Clover wants to focus solely on her political aspirations and avoiding the flirtatious advances of Mr. President. It’s a bit of a slow burn at first because Teddy has to work hard to tear down Clover’s walls because she has practically given up on love and believes in no strings attached only.

One of my favorite things about this book were all the references to African American culture. Obviously both Teddy and Clover are black, as well as the author, so I automatically connected with a lot of the pop culture references and dialogue choice that were used in the book. Also, something about Teddy’s smooth charm was so fresh. He made it no secret that he wanted Clover and watching him wear her down was hilarious😂. I could relate to Clover because she’d been burned by men in the past and she’d really closed herself off to the possibility of a real relationship. She didn’t make it easy for Teddy to woo her and I appreciated that realistic aspect of the book. She was a strong heroine with a soft heart that wanted someone she could trust and I just loved how Teddy cared about her 😭.

The political background to their romance gave me Scandal/Olivia Pole vibes so I was here for it😂. I would’ve liked the intimate scenes to be a bit more descriptive though, because it seems like the author teetered on the line between explicit and fade to black. Also, I think the book would’ve benefited from us being able to get a flashback scene or two of Clover and Teddy’s time together back when he was a senator because there were only brief references that were a bit lacking.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more by this author!

TROPES: POTUS; political romance; older H/h (he’s 41, she’s 35/36); BIPOC representation (H/h are black); boss/employee; forced proximity; friends to lovers

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I actually mostly enjoyed it, which is surprising because I can be notoriously picky. The writing is good, although I do believe that a dual pov could have made it stronger as it would have given us insight into Teddy’s thoughts and emotions. I didn’t like that he was so self-centered and didn’t really ever give weight to Clover’s very real fears and considerations. True, she was skittish and afraid of being hurt, but every time she would bring up the very real possibility that her career would be destroyed if the world found out she was sleeping with the President of the United States, he brushed her off and acted like it wasn’t a valid concern. Even with this, I still like them as a couple and appreciated that he recognizes her talents, constantly praises her and pushes her to fulfill her dreams. I would have given it 3 stars but there’s a scene where Teddy calls clover a bitter broken bitch and he never apologizes or even addresses it again which is unacceptable to me. Even in heated arguments where one person is right, I do not like significant others insulting their partners.

I loved this book! A Political Romance is always up my alley. I just need to know one thing, when can I vote for Theodore Elmsworth for President of our United States?!? Im surely ready to replace him with you know who! 😏

Teddy and Clover, old friends who connect again in the White House when Clover lands the job as Teddy’s new Press Secretary! Teddy has had the feels for Clover back when he ran for Senate. Clover is anti relationship, anti love and anti anything that has to do with the heart. Teddy is labeled the playboy single President. What can possibly go wrong!?

I will admit I wanted a tinge more in the epilogue.
Spice is spicing though! 😉 Enjoy!!

Memorable Quotes: Up next are the smooth stylings of Peabo Bryson with his latest top forty hit.

Yes, Seth sent me a beautiful arrangement of flowers that were waiting at my front door when I returned home from my first day at the White House. It was a nice gesture and I planned on thanking him accordingly. But that didn’t make him my man. “He was being nice.” “Booty calls don’t be doing all that.” She took a sip from her glass. “I’m telling you he is looking for a contract. He wants to get drafted by the Washington Clovers.” I laughed at the team name. “We are not extending his contract.” I hissed out a protracted breath. “It sucks, really, because he's a good player. He has heart and he hustles for the winning score. He’s got good ball handling and a lot of endurance.” If Seth would just stick to the assignment, we would be good, but he's looking to do extra credit, and ain’t nobody asked for that. “So, when are you gonna break it to him, Coach?” “I will after I line up some draft picks.”

“Hmm, so what are you going to do to fix it?” “I’m gonna do my job,” I said, staring at my mother like she had just grown a second head. “OK, Clover, no need for that tone. Just don’t get fired,” she said, standing to search the couch cushions for the remote. “It’s already fixed. It was just a blip. We’ve moved on.” Grabbing my mug, I headed to the kitchen, muttering under my breath, “I’m grown. Treating me like a child. I ain’t fixing a damn thing.” Placing my cup in the microwave, I pressed the digital display like I was dialing someone ready to cuss them out. But when it came time to close the microwave door, I was mindful not to slam it. Yes, I was thirty-five, but I could still get my ass beat and Ms. Sylvia had a heavy hand.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📰📺👨🏿‍💼👩🏿‍💻🇺🇸

My thoughts: 🔖Page 53 296 [10 pages into] Chapter Six - Peabo Bryson hasn't had a Top 40 Hit since 1993, and his last single was in 2018, so that line took me out of the story for a minute. I am very confused about who the love interest is supposed to be in this story.
🔖68 Chapter Eight - It took me hours to finish this chapter due to interruptions. I was hoping to be nearly finished before dinner. It's good, but I need to get some sleep, and this isn't going to be instant anything.
🔖140 Chapter Fifteen - I can't keep my eyes open.
🔖178 Chapter Eighteen - This has taken an interesting route. Hopefully, I can finish it before I have to leave, stopping only to get ready. It's good, but I'm not overly excited, and I don't feel danger.
🔖204 Chapter Twenty - I'm getting annoyed about the scenes being cut off; it's like a closed door for the climax. I can hopefully finish this in the morning.
🔖270 Chapter Twenty-Seven - Really? This story is all over the place. I'm being forced to stop reading; otherwise, I would be done because the suspense is building.

Finally! I thought I was never going to get a chance to complete this story, and that would be a real shame. I enjoyed it, but I wish I had read it during a less busy week. I wasn't crazy about the plot, but I was interested. There were some hiccups, ignoring the very inappropriate love story, I felt the LI's character was a bit underdeveloped, the story on Clover's father was inconsistent, or there was no connecting the dots and they jumped from one narrative to the other. Finally, I didn't like the MC; she had issues, and I was annoyed with her decisions, and I felt the same about the LI. This story wasn't as steamy as the content warning made it sound; there were a lot of fade-outs. Overall, it was a good story. This is my second book by this author, and Sight Unseen is still the best one, based on that, I will continue to read more.

Recommend to others: Yes! I don't usually do political romances; while this isn't the best, it is certainly one of the better ones.

clover and Teddy

3.5⭐️ This book was really cute and I like Clover and Teddy. I understand that Teddy was the press secretary and her career is really important to her before she got involved the President Teddy. I love the banter between the two characters the spice. I do feel that when Teddy called her the B word when she handed in her resignation because people was calling her a hoe and talking about her kind of made me side eye him. Plus he did not communicated he was hurt and said some negative things when they made up. I feel like Teddy apologize for her part and he did not acknowledge the position she was in regarding her career and her reputation. Overall sold read.

Before I was even a chapter in, I was hooked. Kasha writes with assurance and humor, with never a dull moment. My main criticism is that it's single perspective, and I think a dual perspective might have forced Thompson to make the male lead engage with the stakes and learn to be less of a selfish asshole. He's hot and he loves her, but I got tired real fast of the female lead always being the "problem" in their relationship when he refused to take her concerns about a workplace romance with the president of the United States seriously. As much as I liked the book and even enjoyed them together when they weren't fighting, I was disappointed that she went back to him in the end because she deserved better.

god I started reading this book drunk as a skunk and then I finished it sober as ever LOL

I also started writing a review after multiple mimosas so here it is:

“ok it started off really strong, there were some pretty cringy moments of awkward pop culture references (many of which I did not get) but still it was cute and I giggled quite a bit.

The first part: It’s more than a rom-com — it also talks about important issues: racism and sexism in the workplace, in places of power, the systems of oppression that target us today. I just ,, maybe it’s the wine and bubbly in my system but this was really good ??

AND let’s talk about the subtle code switching the main character does,, it’s not too noticeable if you’re not looking at it but the changes in tone from when she speaks with her friends/family vs when she is in professional settings, I scream, it’s an interesting dynamic.

Ok on the story, our homegirl has actually zero chill.”

Anyway it was okay, the concept, I admit, is close to my heart because honestly I love Scandal (the tv show created by shonda rhimes) but it kind of fell flat, sorry!!

also if someone called me a “broken bitter bitch” I don’t think I would’ve ever forgiven them, but that’s just me !!!!

It's like Scandal but the POTUS is single and black. It's also better.

Clover, a PR expert becomes the press secretary for the second black POTUS, Teddy. Having worked together in the past, there is some chemistry there. Clover is a strong, independent, I don't need a man, I know my worth, black woman. Teddy pursues her and she eventually let's herself fall in love with him, but will the potential leak, her fears and insecurities make her run or will she let him love her. Read and find out. You'll have to suspend your disbelief for some of it, but that's what romance novels are for. Just the right about of heat spice without being overly graphic.

This is my second book by this author and I'm really enjoying her books and plan to read the others.

Going through my head while reading.. a little Olivia Pope meets Michelle Obama! Clover was annoying as all hell <— had to get that out the way first because she took “damaged and closed off” to an obnoxious level for me! I still really enjoyed this book because that aside I loved Clover’s badassery!

Clover was very “I don’t need love I have my career” and she slayed it! She was part speaker, part political advisor which was interesting to me. We got high powered, political romance, but still kind of soft vibes. Teddy is giving Barack singing Let’s Stay Together at all times! He didn’t come across as a stuffy president, his cravings for normalcy was conveyed really well. This is the US leader playing monopoly, hanging out in a speakeasy, making friends with the janitor because he’s the only other black person around. I absolutely loved this man!

I like how the scandal was handled even though again Clover is annoying AF! Daisha always got her together though and the little speeches at the opening were adorable. When Teddy said he needs to be punched to the press I swooned real hard because go ahead and let the people know your woman is the prize! I loved their story!

I wanted to like this book but I can't get into a forbidden love trope. If that's the trope for you then you'd love this one. I find Kasha tends to be write flawed character and typically they have some redeemable qualities. I couldn't fined them in this one.

I could have gotten over the fact that Tecdy was the president and that Clover was his employee but the terrible people that Teddy and Clober we're was more annoying.

I actually didn't like either of them. Between Teddy constantly gaslighting and straight up selfishness I couldn't take it. He gave no shits about the impact of his actions on Clover and said it's no big deal. Overriding her feeling when she tried to explain when she help her career. And resorted to name-calling. Like I'm sorry that's ridiculous.

Meanwhile, Clove brushes it under the rug and never brings it up for discussion. Goes as far as to apologize rather than seeing the situation for what it was.

I didn't want these two together. Clover was annoying but I couldn't stand Teddy and neither of them grow to be better.

The sex scene was pretty spicy thou

After all of the turmoil in the US after this last election it was nice to read this fairy tale of love in the White House.

Theodore Elmsworth is the second Black male as President of the US. Interestingly he is a single man. We learn later that he was married once before.

Clover Bennett is the new Press Secretary hired after the first one quit. Clover and Teddy worked together when he was a Senator.

The book is about them finding love, dealing with Clover’s baggage regarding men and love and the subsequent challenges when pictures are leaked after they’d been out on a date.

This was a fun, easy read that was a like a fairy tale. And every once in awhile you need that love story that even though it has issues makes you believe in love. Makes you want root for the characters to get their HEA. Which they do.

I’ve always liked the way Kasha Thompson crafts a story, how she makes the characters endearing so you’re rooting for them. Borrowed this from Kindle Unlimited.

Figure of Speech by Kasha Thompson is a great weekend read full of Black Girl Magic 🪄 and it wouldn’t be a romance without spicy sex scenes
🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶… and they are spicy!

The protagonist Clover Bennet gives off major Olivia Pope vibes as she navigates her new career as the White House Press Secretary. She is overqualified, works weekends, and doesn’t commit to relationships but that all changes with Theodore Elmsworth, the President of the United States.

My favorite part about this book was the ease and authenticity of the dialogue between the characters, especially Clover and her BFF, Daysha..it was like reading a conversation that I have between my own friends!

Loved the book and can’t wait to read more from the author! It’s was also a fun read to escape our current political climate.

I simply adored this book!

Clover is the ultimate badass protagonist that you cannot help but love and want to protect with your life. Teddy is just full blown heart eyes emoji. And even the side characters make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside - Day, Alan, Lady Sylvia and even Lisa!

I get very strong Jasmine Guillory vibes from reading this book, which is probably why I loved it so much.

I was rooting for Clover the whole book through, and I loved her growth throughout the book. She could’ve easily come across as an ice queen, but I felt she was written perfectly as a woman who has been through a lot and is trying her best to process and move forward whilst still protecting herself.

Essentially, I couldn’t fault this book and I know it’s one I’ll come back to time again.

Thank you so much NetGalley and Victory Editing for the ARC.

In DC, Clover has worked her way up to become a rising PR star. Teddy, the recently elected president, is a handsome single man. Teddy and Clover have a history. Ten years ago, she participated in his senate campaign. Since then, he hasn't stopped thinking about her. He searches for Clover to join the team when the press secretary position in his cabinet becomes available.

Once I started the first page I couldn't put it down. I love Clover's personality and energy toward her career. She wasn't going let anything or anyone ruin her career. I love their banter between each other. Their relationship gives off scandal vibes. Teddy is such a sweet and soft guy. I love all the side characters. They were all funny and caring. I love the message that you don't necessary need a man and children to be successful woman.

I really enjoyed this book.

I was gifted this book for an honest review and ohhh weeee it is so good. What happens when a hottie from your past becomes President and you are hired to be his Press Secretary? Fireworks 💥 Clover is hardworking, smart, relentless and fully understands how a workplace romance could tarnish a reputation she has worked and sacrificed so much for. But can she resist the charms of President
Theodore Elmsworth? Things get spicy as Clover battles against a heart that wants to believe in love and her need to be independent. Fast paced, witty, steamy and characters that you will adore, this book is a must read.

After years of a “good things happen to those who hustle” mindset, Clover Bennett lands a job working as the press secretary for The White House. Clover doesn’t want any distractions. But there is one, the very handsome and very single President, Theodore (Teddy) Elmsworth.

I was here for this friends to lovers Black romance. I really loved Clover as a main character! She was funny, intelligent, AND a boss! I also really enjoyed her bestfriend, Daysha, as a character. The writing and pacing were great. And I cracked up several times during this novel.

My only complaint about this novel was the love interest. Throughout most of the book I didn’t like Teddy. I didn’t necessarily think he was a bad person, but he just wasn’t for me. And at one point I did think that he was a good match for Clover, even if I didn’t personally like him. But then I noticed that he raised his voice at Clover multiple times. So when he eventually called her out her name I was not surprised. Anything I could’ve liked about him went out the window when he did that. He is trash. Maybe I would’ve liked him better had this been a dual pov novel. Maybe I would’ve understood him better. But after referring to Clover as a “bitch” as soon as she made him mad, I don’t care to understand him. I did not root for them to be together after that. And to make it even worse, she didn’t even take offense to what he said. Girl stand up!

I did enjoy this book though because Clover really stood out as a character and I enjoyed the writing. I’ll be checking out more books by Kasha Thompson in the future!

Thank you Webster Avenue Publishing and NetGalley for this arc. All opinions are my own.

Clover x Teddy

First of all this book reminded me that I love the name Clover. With that being said, y'all need to stop giving my sis such a hard time ! I completely understood Clover's reservations about being involved with her boss. Especially when your boss is freaking POTUS ! She worked so hard to get where she wanted to be & that all could have been taken away behind a good time. But after Teddy was doing all that hard work to show her that he wanted her & he didn't give an EFFYOUCEEKAY about what no one else was thinking. Now it became times that I wanted to ring Clover neck because its just like she kept being so freaking stubborn & I was steadily losing my patience with her. But when Teddy was able to start nurturing her soft side & giving her space to get comfortable I loved him 😍 Clover deserved to be happy & I just hated that she couldn't see it due to fear.

I was not a fan of the Monica Lewinsky reference as it was tacky. & Teddy didn't apologize enough for calling Clover out her name 😑 which is why I couldn't give this five stars. I understand his anger in that moment because I was pissed off with Clover too, but that was a low blow.

Kasha Thompson does no wrong & I always love her book covers 😍

thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

I liked this book, but I can't say I loved it unfortunately :/. and that is solely down to the love interest (who is the actual fucking president of the United States????????? it was hard to get over)
first of all, there was (in my opinion) a skewed power dynamic between them, seeing as she is his press secretary and he's THE ACTUAL PRESIDENT!!! so yeah, I'd say he was a tad more powerful than her. there were also her very valid concerns for her career and reputation . he was also just really pushy and annoying at times when I felt like he was acting like a petulant child.

all in all, I loved clover and I wish she got a better love story but I did enjoy the book! it was a quick, enjoyable read that I wouldn't hesitate to pick up again if my mood yearned for it.

I will preface this with there was a lot in this book that was fun, but also as a Washington, DC resident and political professional, there was a lot that just didn't sit well with me. I actually think I would have really enjoyed this had 1) the male lead not been the President 2) the female lead did not work for him. While books are an escape, the level to which I had to stretch to believe the central parts of this book were just too much. I often enjoy DC-based and political novels, but so much of this was so beyond reality. And I really struggled with the power dynamics in this relationship, and never felt like they were properly addressed.

The characters clearly had incredible chemistry, and I enjoyed the supporting cast as well. I really think if these characters had different jobs and one was not the supervisor/President, it would have worked a lot better.

2/5 stars!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I like reading workplace romances, but this book had too much of the workplace aspect than the actual romance. I feel like even at the 50% mark, there's still no connection between Clover and Teddy for us to root for their romance or relationship because we spent more time reading what they do for work and the interactions between them were just crumbs and not even that swoon-worthy. I also feel icky with how Teddy seems to always put Clover in a situation where her reputation and her career can be taken away from her and how nonchalant and non-caring he is about that is a no for me, especially the power dynamics between the two of them.

I was excited to read this because it very much gave off Scandal vibes when I came across it. The book fell flat for me though. I really struggled to finish it. I did appreciate that it tackled racism and sexism in the workplace though. Clover and Teddy were actually both annoying, but Clover really irked me. The whole cold act was tired and for someone that put out fires for a living she never wanted to address her own problems or talk about them.

Teddy was very much a jump in head first and deal with the rest later kind of man. He didn’t care about how their actions affected Clover and that is what bothered me about him. I get not caring what everyone says but as the PRESIDENT you’ve got to care to some extent. This isn’t one I’d recommend.

Even though Clover was super bitter and could be a b*tch did I agree the president should have called her that? Absolutely not. I actually liked Clover, the president not so much. He was a man wh*re and the whole stripper debacle was tasteless. A lot of things in this book i had to just pretend didn’t happen because it was too unrealistic for a president or the White House. It was very much like scandal. The writing was really good.

Figure of Speech by Kasha Thompson is a sizzling romcom & perfect match to escape from the summer heat. It revolves around the powerhouse of a woman that is Clover Bennett, whose equally intelligent, gorgeous & savvy, as she takes on the position of Press Secretary for the White House. The current President is a handsome bachelor & also an old colleague of Clover’s. These two make sparks fly right off the page. I couldn’t help but be reminded of one of my old favorite shows, Scandal, while reading this. It’s different positions with this main character Clover being the Press Secretary & different situations as they are both single in this one, but I enjoy them both! The passion & undeniable chemistry between the president & the hard-working, powerful & incredible woman were reminiscent of each other.
This is a book that enraptured me within 3 short chapters that I could already was going to be a book of excellence.
A book achieves romantic banter greatness when it can make a reader smirk & smile as they read & this book succeeded with that on me! I was full on charmed by this hero & loved the strong, self-confident & worthy woman he was trying to win over. There was even a Pinky & the Brain reference, which I applaud.
The power dynamics felt a little strange to me, but I think right away you can tell there is a different feel to their professional relationship given the fact that they have a history that is rooted in working closely in their younger years along with the friendship that came with that. I wish he would have acknowledged more the tolls that come from simply being a woman in a professional setting & the different expectations that society places on women. But I will say without giving too much away that I absolutely adored the ways he did root for her.
This is a phenomenal romcom full of wit, banter, laughs & enough spiciness that let’s just say I was blushing for the Secret Service.
Figure of Speech is out TODAY & I highly recommend checking it out!

Trigger warnings: This book mentions &/or contains moderate coarse language, sex, sexual harassment (briefly referenced) & politics.

Shoutout to the author for having trigger warning at the beginning of the novel. I think it’s so rad when authors do this & have to show my appreciation!

Massive thanks to NetGalley, Kasha Thompson & Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op. for giving me the opportunity to read an arc of this in exchange for an honest review.

This book had a lot going for it.

Clover is a workaholic/"girl boss" type character who gets a job as the new (black) president's press secretary. One of the things I found worked best about the book was its representation, and there were lots of great lines about the difficulties facing black women (and black Presidents!). Clover is also very focused on her career instead of relationships (although I do think this is undermined slightly at points by her and Teddy's relationship, which I'll come to later). But there are positive messages about women who don't necessarily want a husband and kids - even if it all feels slightly heteronormative (other than the token gay friend). Clover and her friendships are also some of my favourite parts of the book. There were lots of funny one-liners and references, particularly to black culture, and it felt very contemporary in that sense.

While there were definitely some "progressive" (quote unquote) aspects, I think I had some issues with the core workplace relationship trope. I'm normally a big fan of this trope and, tied in with a celebrity angle (well, President in this context, but basically celebrity), I thought I'd be a fan. But the actual relationship between Clover and Teddy felt imbalanced, and from the beginning I felt quite uncomfortable with the power dynamics between an employer and employee. This only increased for me further through the book - Clover repeatedly tells Teddy what she has to lose as a female employee, and he doesn't seem to hear her at all. I felt that the overall message of 'quit your job to get the man' wasn't ideal, either. Fair enough if she wanted to pursue her dreams, but it seemed like the woman in this scenario lost more than the man (and Teddy didn't exactly seem to get that).

Having said that, I did genuinely like the relationship between the MC's other than that. While the conflict was fairly predictable and some of their interactions were a bit cheesy (not sure how much "Mr. President"ing I can deal with), it was a nice slow build.

Overall I would like to read more from Thompson - and I'm sure there will be plenty of readers who disagree with me!

“You go low, I burrow a hole into the center of the earth, or whatever it was Michelle said.”

Figure of Speech is a romance novel set in the White House.

Clover Bennett is a PR guru who is hired as the Press Secretary to a new President only a few months into the job. DC is a small town and she worked comms for the POTUS, Teddy, when he was a senator. The stakes are higher now and Teddy is absolutely irresistible.

Suffice to say, I loved this book. It was fun to visit DC again and imagine this story playing out in my former hometown.

“For a communications professional I sucked when it came to communicating my own emotions.”

I not only agree with the above, I would take it even farther. It’s always different when you are the one speaking and you don’t have a handler to prep you. And you feel worse because this is what you do.

“This room was like a scene from Animal Kingdom. It was important I establish dominance quickly so others knew I was not one to be trifled with. It was all about bold ideas and speaking in a way that made it sound like you knew what you were doing even when you didn’t. Never let them see you sweat because the minute you do, it’s over and whatever is left of you is getting picked on by the vultures.”

This book is hilarious. There were so many quips and obviously 67% of my book quotes are one-liners. The main character was very relatable, at least for a former DC workaholic. It was hard to read the parts about her not trusting men but honestly cannot blame her.

4.5 ⭐️s.

I received an advance review copy in exchange for a review of this novel.

I love when a book surprises me, and this was definitely one of those books! The story was serving some Olivia Pope/Scandal realness (minus all the murder and torture) and delivered one hell of a forbidden romance!

I’m obsessed with Clover. She’s a badass boss bitch who works hard and is insanely good at what she does. Props to this book for giving us a WOMAN married to her work-it’s a thing! I loved watching Clover kicking ass and taking names all while being wrapped up in a crazy love story. Teddy is adorable and (from what my limited political knowledge can gather) a pretty good president! At first I was a little confused about their relationship and how it seemed like they went from 0-60 real quick, but it made sense to discover that sweet sweet Teddy had been pining all these years 🥺. I love a good relationship that’s dripping in support, and Teddy and Clover had that in droves. It was so sweet to see Teddy awake these feelings and realizations in Clover that she didn’t know she had, and my heart melted as he reminded her of her now dormant dreams, and encouraged her to chase them-I loved these two!

Also, I’d be remiss not to mention the hilarity and awesomeness that was Clover’s friends. Alan and Daysha had me IN STITCHES so many times. Just the best of minor characters!

In general, this book was smart, and funny, and sexy as hell. I binged it because I couldn’t stop. I really, really enjoyed this!

I was given an ARC by NetGalley and Webster Avenue Publishing. All opinions are my own.
