It’s 1973, the town of Baths, cozy middle-of-nowhere American heartland. Traveling musician Wegg rolls in, content to busk for a beat and be on his merry way once more. That is, until he meets Mr. Neighbor, the disarmingly sweet man made of cloth who offers him company and a place to stay. As the two grow closer, they click together just right, each harmonizing with the other's most secret self. Yet their growing romance is haunted by uncertainty and mystery...
There's the town itself, plagued by repeated, ritualistic murders by the elusive Baths Heartbreaker. Then there's Neighbor, whose cheerful demeanor never falters, but who disappears like clockwork every month. And Wegg, who lives as though he's on borrowed time―what exactly is he afraid will catch up to him?
A twisting graphic novel of love and deceit, all threaded together with lush psychedelia, folk horror, and a heaping helping of mirth. Turns out, sometimes the best way to conquer your past is to find a future.
Yugo Limbo has written a primal scream of a graphic novel in the best way. I've never read something quite like Be Kind, My Neighbor. Between the perfect pacing, unique artstyle, the dialog that brought the fictional little town with dark secrets to life, and the visceral yet somehow extremely playful and erotic horror, and psychedelic madness; this book really has something for everyone. Beyond the books brilliant structure, Yugo manages to humanize and call awareness to the ugly parts of healing from trauma, the crushing weight of intrusive thoughts, and the trans experience, letting all of us who have experienced hurt and trauma that we aren't alone, and we are loved. In other words, this book is like a warm hug during a rainy day. Overall, this is fantastic, you have to pick this up. 5/5, certified Good Read.
A serial killer...a cult...psychedelic drug trips...a town full of lonely people...finding love and acceptance - all of these issues are looked at in a unique and strange way - forcing the reader to question what they think about those who are 'different'. There is some graphically sexual content in this book; but it is used to illustrate the distance between individuals who are just getting to know each other.
Um, so I just read a thing. I was drawn in by the texture of the cover. Like you can feel that texture through the screen. And it just looked so fall-ish and I wanted to experience it. And let me tell you experience is the word.
I very deliberately started this post with an um. I am really not sure what to make of this story. It was just so very much. I loved it, and I am made unsure by it. There is a lot happening and I was fully engrossed. I started it and then before I knew it I had read the whole thing. I just don’t have the words to describe to you what things are happening here.
I don’t think I am quite smart enough to grasp the overall metaphor that I am sure is in here. I know it is there but I don’t think it quite got to me.
This is definitely the type of horror that I like and if anyone can define it for me that would be appreciated. It is things like this and Meddling Kids.
Take this as a recommendation AFTER you check the content warnings because this covers some serious stuff.
Psychedelic folk horror and queer romance between a cursed troubadour and his equally cursed, small town, gentle giant serial killer lover. What more could you ask for?
The monochromatic, 70s palette of browns and blacks evoke a delicious dissonance between the Strawberry Shortcake-like character styles and the absolute dark soul of the story. The pacing and reveals make this 400+ page graphic novel a read-in-one-sitting experience. The personal history of the trans character is incidental, not yet another tragic trans coming out story.
If you like Old Gods of Appalachia or King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (whose song scores the animated book trailer), you will LOVE.
While not my usual read, a friend recommended this to me so I bought it. The art is unique, it's not a style I am used to in comics. The dominating oranges and reds lend a surreal quality to the town and characters, but the desaturated, washed out colors make it hard to read for extended periods of time. The almost puppet-like appearances of the characters both help and hinder the tone of the story. It makes the characters feel more quirky and adds to the "psychedelic" parts, but really takes away from the "horror" aspects of the story. Cults and minor body horror don't really scare me, and the art style prevented me from getting immersed enough to really be creeped out by anything. I can't recommend this if you are looking to be scared.
While the pitch for this book promised psychedelia and even included a content warning about "unreality", I was disappointed to find that these elements barely came up twice in the entire story. While these scenes were well-illustrated, interesting, and somewhat disconcerting, there just wasn't enough for my taste.
The character and relationship building between Wegg and Neighbor is well-written, if a little tedious at times. I thought the dialogue was pretty good, but I was waiting for the plot to start for most of the first third of the book. And this is coming from someone who loves slice of life anime. I thought Wegg had an interesting backstory, and his "condition" intrigued me. But his reactions to Neighbor's darker side really bothered me. Spoilers for about halfway through the book: Neighbor is a less interesting character personality-wise. We get a brief insight into his past and relation to the cult, but it isn't explored nearly enough to give any insight into him.
And that's the name of the game with Be Kind, My Neighbor. You will always be wanting more. Plot points happen, are half resolved, and then dropped for the next thing. ( Character backstories are brought up briefly and then never revisited. I was dying to learn more about the cult in Baths, pushing through the story just to get to the promised occult weirdness. But it is barely relevant for most of the book. The cult subplot feels half-baked, and the end is rushed through with little explanation or exploration of the themes and ideas. And I don't mean little explanation in a soft magic system kind of way, I mean in a way that makes the story feel unfinished. Which is a shame because the last third of the story is the most interesting.
I know a big plus for a lot of people is the LGBT+ representation. As a cis/het dude I can't really comment on the quality of it, but I really enjoyed seeing the varied cast of characters and relationships that I don't normally get in my typical sci-fi/fantasy fare.
Overall, I thought Be Kind, My Neighbor was a fun read. I knocked it out in a weekend and enjoyed the relationship between Wegg and Neighbor, the quirky cast of side characters, and the occult/folk horror elements. Maybe I went into this with the wrong expectations or missed some important subtext, but I was left wanting by the end. I found myself wishing the story would get weirder, which surprised me because the pitch almost made me think it would be too weird for my taste. The art style and ideas have a lot of potential, and this is a good first work. I am interested to see what Yugo Limbo does next.
i have...conflicting feelings about this one. like okay, positives? - the art is GORGEOUS huge fan of the subtle, textured look w/ the muted color palette - i love the contrast between the like explicit gore/sex rendered in the like cartoony geometric style w/ the muted colors. super good. LOVE it - i really liked the cult/folk horror-y elements and like, how the main character's just a puppet and no one knows and it's never explained lol - tillman. i just adore him
NEGATIVES. - like i'm not complaining about there being kink in this, i think kink has a place in art and also it's just a fascinating topic to explore through the lens of story. but also, it kinda just felt like the artist was throwing it in there as material to jack off to later HAHAHAH - it felt very. fanfictionized? like this was definitely made by a transmasc creator who is chronically addicted to tumblr and/or twitter and has a gore fetish and if you like that sure but that is NOT MY VIBE hahaha - the character development? nonexistent. the plot? ehhhh it's sorta there but mostly not. i guess my primary issue is that the whole story just felt so Pleased with itself that it never made an actual statement or impression on me? like it was trying realll hard to be sort of shocking and making a statement and it's like okay but what's the Point of this
but also i'm not like mad at it. it's going to hit for a lot of people and a lot of people will enjoy it but it's not my thing and that's cool! godspeed to the people who like it and as for me i just probably won't be reading any more work by this artist
500 pages of hybristophilia, autoandrophilia, and gross tentacle PIV. This is your brain on twitter & tumblr porn!
Edit: I can't really stop thinking about this! I have absolutely no problem with very vulgar and shocking pieces of media. But the way this story was first and foremost a vehicle for the author's (and the intended audience's) niche sexual interests feels so insane to read a full length work of!
It's the kind of feeling you get from accidentally stumbling on a short form unfinished piece of writing someone made while masturbating. The blurb sounds so interesting but the plot is probably third or fourth priority in the author intention! Fetish first, self insert (which ties to fetish) second, aesthetics (which ties to fetish) third, then the plot (which also ties to fetish).
I think this is a fascinating case study in fandom involvement fundamentally changing the way someone creates. It's almost like a funnel - only the fetish can get through! The rest of it is an excuse to enjoy neo-guro.
Art is 10/10, characters are fun and neat as well. The story I think could've been worked on a bit more, and could've helped with the flow and pacing of it. Felt kinda rushed and had too many pages for not enough information.
The art! The queerness! The characters! Yugo limbo expresses stories in the most beautiful way and can do nothing but capture your attention. This book/comic is amazing and I am so happy I had the opportunity to read it.
A bizarre experience of a read. Certainly for a select audience. Cheery 1970’s cartoon style elements with an individual flair by the creator, with a cheerful serial killer made of cloth like a puppet who falls for a little busker who is cursed to have an egg head that rots. Graphic violence and body horror throughout, a couple explicit sexual scenes. Quirky and stylistic T4T couple beloved by the town and creepy cults making moves behind the scenes. A few choices with the pacing were a bit jarring but an incredibly unique read with singular vision and a surprise tentacle or two.
Literally soooo obsessed with this. It’s like all my favorite things in one. Trans characters, serial killers, and cults! Loved it so much! Genuinely really cute for being about murder!
i have been over the moon when the book was announced: puppets? 70s vibes? did you see that! it's me! sprinting, eye crazed, foaming of the mouth.
unfortunately i just finished the book and... yeah, it's over, does anyone have thoughts? anyone? please raise your hands!*nothing but the buzzing of the lights overhead*...okay let's try:
story: very forgettable and has no bite to it. parts of the story felt like very early drafts. although i enjoyed the creativity i wished there's weight to it.
like wegg's whole curse and the swans ritual storyline, is very strange and up my alley i LOVE IT.
i think the scenes might have been written to be episodic? although it just came choppy and sometimes felt like accidental, like oh that suddenly happened alright..
wished we got more familiar with the town and residents you know, because familiarity will endear the reader to the characters quirks , and i think a hint of this have been achieved with tillman but i believe we could have so much more.
pacing: very off and choppy. simple as that.
ending: would anyone like to step up and explain? i don't care but i just wanna see you try? wegg made a pact with trudy? because i made peace with a plot twist because no one likes bittersweet endings. happy or sad the ending won't hit either way because of the characters and i will talk about that in a minute.
art: beautiful and amazingly baked. 10/10. the hints of folk art had me loving and living.
characters: (tillman bald or fuzzy is my sweet jittery beloved AND NO ONE IS TAKING HIM FROM my dead claws)...ahem anyway the characters didn't have a space to breath in my opinion.
neighbor: let the man flourish. his personality is basically sweet psycho vigilante, i found him so so flat. yes we see some aspects of him in flashbacks, like the wish. hoped saw more of him fleshed out even without words, as he disclosed "he isn't good at expressing himself". anyway Viktor the puppet is adorable i'm gonna eat him.
wegg: he was more animated, maybe because of his goofy ass personality. still he was forgettable too.
the two relationship: what? like what? wegg just accepted his bf murdering? what in the fanfic? their relationships could have been less lovey dovey and more focusing on the tension maybe. i know there is a big theme on acceptance and queer love and all, but come on. the boy was about to leave bc he thought his man is getting freaky but he stayed for the serial killings??
tillman: my man when faced with the eldritch horrors wished he wasn't bold, i can respect that. 10/10 character writing, i loved him, he is my pookie, my muffin. his storyline with Kevin is hilarious. the book is worth reading for that weird fucked up cat. but he was also flat.
I am one of those who preordered this book and was so ecstatic when it arrived in the mail that I devoured it within the day! I've been a fan of Yugo Limbo since the debut of the "Smile for Me" game along with their indie animation projects; I also attended an online talk Yugo did with Team Egg at my college while they were writing BKMN, and the advice they gave regarding working in the industry and directing projects was advice that I took wholeheartedly. Watching this book come to life from the tiny window of their online updates has been quite the journey, and the fact that I'm actually sitting down to write this is a testament to how successful this work is.
Now, the book itself! It stands fantastic on its own. I firmly believe that (after heeding the warnings at the beginning) BKMN has something for everyone. The pacing is smooth, the characters are delightful, and the atmosphere is eerily lovely. The horror leans from whimsical to trippy to dreadful, and the mirth certainly isn't scarce as Yugo promised. I found that the aspects of scariness, romance, humor, and serious deep stuff didn't outweigh one another; it all came together to tell a cohesive yet bizzare story at both surface and thematic levels. Wegg and Mr. Neighbor are dynamic, complex characters who I deeply related to regarding queerness and healing from trauma, and heavy but necessary subjects like this are handled extremely well. This isn't another tragic trans story. If you've been aching for trans characters who take initiative in creating themselves and carving their place in the world, this is the book for you.
I also wanted to talk about a couple more specific late-story things, so I'll add them under a spoiler:
Okay so all in all: I HIGHLY reccommend BKMN!!! thank you for the food. i'm eating this with my eyes
really really loved this in so many ways... unapologetic and joyful t4t love! cult horror! surprisingly realistic gore in a cool folksy art style! theres so much here and theres so much to unpack with it.. a story of love, joy, finding urself and finding someone who loves you for you, trauma and healing and growth, trans and lgbt struggles (and happiness!) with a beautiful colourful art style and such charming characters. theres so much love put into this and u can really feel the authors passion for creating this.. ive been a big fan of everything limbo puts out since discovering smile for me, and bkmn does not disappoint in any way for fans of their work. i loved this and im so happy to hold it in my hands
(unfortunately going through a sad moment bc the local comic store sent me a faulty copy and after i was done reading, the entire mid section of the book just came loose and fell out. which has made me very very sad. but hopefully i can get a replacement copy sent out so i can reread and take care of this amazing book)
I literally wrote a whole analysis about several of the themes and scenes of this book because I felt like I was going to explode if I didn't! That's how much I adore this story!
Be Kind, My Neighbor is a graphic depiction of what it's like yearning to be loved and finally getting it in the LGBTQ+ community. If you love horror (both body and kinda psychological), T4T and queer romances, conversations about cults, and learning to love and be loved, this is 100% the book for you. It has amazing, varied rep for trans individuals and you grow to be entranced by the characters the moment they appear on page. Honestly a truly wonderful experience.
I liked the art, I thought the character designs and the setting were all really cool and stylish but the story is just so single mindedly obsessed with how great and cool the main characters are that it feels empty and forgettable. Which is hard to do with an art style this strong! One of those things where I would have rated it higher if it was *less* cool because then I wouldn't be so frustrated with the wasted potential. I really hope Limbo's next book is better because I will be reading it as I like the art.
I was really excited to get ahold of this comic as I love Yugo and their work, especially the wonderfully 70s inspired art style! The weaving of cult horror alongside a somehow almost wholesome queer romance was really well done, and it was great to see representation of trans characters and experiences, mirrored alongside the murderous small town cult storyline. I hope to see more of their work in the future, and look forward to it! I also enjoyed the playlist that went along with the book :]
FINISHED ON MY BIRTHDAY YIPPIE!! And wow- this book was one hell of a ride! From the content warnings I was a bit worried this book would go in a direction that would be a lot for me to handle. But, surprisingly the content warnings helped me prepare A LOT for the harder subjects. Definitely read at your own pace / comfort level though!
I was guessing every step of the way which direction the plot would be going in; which was SO refreshing. Kept me on my toes throughout the wild ride. This is one of those books that I have to re-read in the future. Couldn't recommend this enough to the mature & informed reader 👍😼❤️🔥
they are officially an auto-read author for me now since their art has such a "comforts the disturbed" way about it and it shows how gentle found family is, how respectful love should be, and how nonjudgmental we all could be to just live our lives in the way that works for us. This also gave me slight Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees vibes and I haven't been able to stop thinking about that one
I devoured this in a single sitting with my jaw on the floor the entire time. This graphic novel is so committed and unabashed in what it's doing that even if I didn't love it I'd have to respect it. But I do love it. The puppet man is doing things in this you couldn't possibly imagine and I support him, honestly.
I'm not sure I can recommend this to most people but for those who have a palate for this sort of thing, I will be recommending wholeheartedly.
translated from Italian, and I'm not sure if it's just poorly translated or if there's some Italian social subtext that I just don't understand, but either way I couldn't decipher the vibe
Such an interesting story ! Cults , death, drugs ,kidnapping and murders are some of the plot in the story . There were a lot of troublesome things happening but at least , it all comes together!
I have been a fan of Yugo Limbo's art style since their game "Smile For Me" so when I heard they were releasing a comic I had to get my hands on it. The art is beautiful and everything I expected from their previous work blending 70s aesthetics, small town kitsch, and horror for something all its own. Every time I thought or expected something to happen it would completely rip the rug out from under me. Also, as a trans masc reader a lot of the parts really spoke to me and made me wish for more books about trans men, serial killers, and cults. A very specific itch to scratch but Be Kind, My Neighbor definitely did!
Come for the psychedelic murder mystery, stay for the love story and the weirdest GSA ever.
