Once I Was Alive

Rate this book
She wants to die, and he wants to live. The only problem is she doesn’t know he’s dying.

Death is a dark shadow that looms over all of us. He watches you as you sleep. Waits for you in dark alleyways ready to pounce the moment you make a wrong turn. He stands on the opposite side of the street when you don’t look both ways. He even sits next to you waiting for that moment the light turns red and you look away.
He’s everywhere.
So why won’t he come for me?
Some would say death is a coward’s way out. That maybe things are not as bad as it seems and I’m only looking for attention. But what people with perfect lives, perfect families, and perfect friends don’t see, is other people’s problems. They don’t notice someone who’s not as perfect as them. They don’t see anything beyond what their perfect lives don’t accept.
I stood on the roof that day ready to die, but as usual life threw me a curveball. Upon seeing me standing on the edge of my school’s roof, this mysterious man does everything in his power to help me understand that my life is worth a lot more than I imagine. I don’t know him, but after learning his name as a parting goodbye, I quickly discover the impossible truth behind his appearance on the roof that day. Our destinies are intertwined in more ways than one, the only problem is which destiny do I follow when one of them is real and the other is inside my head.

Wow. This novella was amazing from start to finish. I couldn't put it down! It's a wonderfully heart-wrenching novel about a suicidal girl and the man who saves her... but can she help save him too?

I related to both main characters. Quinn the h is extremely depressed over her sister's death and also being abused by her uncle. All she wants in life is to die. Collen the H is a 'ghost' of himself- he's dying in the hospital. When he finds Quinn about to commit suicide, he talks her down. They help each other emotionally and fall in love in the process.

“But why change for the worse and not the better?” he questions seriously.
“Because sometimes worse is all there is.”

Never have I ever been so intrigued by a novella- it has mystery, suspense, and a touch of romance and paranormal qualities. I recommend this book to anyone who is also suffering in life. There's always a way out, even if it's unexpected and comes in the form of a ghost who saves your life. ;) This is a beautiful rollercoaster ride. Also, the cover is absolutely stunning. Five stars!

Original review was posted on July 19, 2022 with my personal GR account. I deleted it to transfer all my reviews on this one.

I received an ARC of this book.

TW: suicide attempt and sexual assault

- age gap (older hero, younger heroine)
- billionaire hero
- insta love
- supernatural phenomenon

✰✰☄︎

Plot:
Once I Was Alive is a story of a girl who's living a miserable life after her dearest sister died. Quinn Sullivan decided that her life has to end, so one day, she went to the school's rooftop and there's the suicide trigger warning. Then there's this mysterious guy she had never seen before suddenly appearing on the rooftop and talking to her about the decision she's made. She ranted to him about her miserable life, etc etc. And then a bunch of plottwists.

Review:
(Firstly, I'm not sure I'm actually a very good reviewer since I don't write reviews a lot but the things I'd write below are just my thoughts, observations, and opinions.. )

- I had noticed a lot of misused and missing punctuations, mostly commas, and a few (probably just twice) confusion with they're, their, and there.
- The heroine sounds pathetic and weak and indulges in self-pity. To some readers, it might be a turn off (I'm adding it here just for a heads up), but it's understable because the heroine was abused and deep in guilt and sorrow for her sister's death.
-
- The first plottwist was actually kind of obvious. But it still excited me when it was confirmed.
- It was a quick read. Of course, because it's just a novella. But I mean, it was easy, several plottwists but not hard to follow and not too complicated.
- I like "The Talk". I'm refering to Tattoo Guy's conversation with Gloomy Girl on the rooftop.
↳Pointing out that she might not die if she jumped from the rooftop, and there are other easier, more efficient ways, if she was final with her decision, and other things.
↳His reason for "hating the word maybe makes sense.
"How do we get unstuck?" “We accept that we can’t fix what we can’t change."
↳Basically, just talking sense to her and making her rethink her decision.
- I find it hard to believe that
- I don't know what to think of this insta-love and insta-trust thingy. It isn't really my thing but on this book, it was a little odd because:
↳The hero himself said that he's not really an easy going person, doesn't believe in clairvoyance, etc etc but believed the heroine when

- I loved that

Wow. This book was…interesting. It truly was an unique storyline. And I still can’t believe it was only 107 pages. There was a LOT of twists and plot in this little book.

Quinn is an 18 year old living a very tough and traumatic life after her sister passed. Her uncle is a scumbag hurting her. Her aunt hates her. And she has no friends. As she commits to ending her life, a gorgeous stranger stops her. They spend 7 hours talking and then part ways. But she’s now decided to stay alive.

This is where the twists come in. I won’t give them away, so just know this; You won’t see these twists coming. Just when you figure one twist out, another hits. Can’t wait to read book two!

I was given an ARC of this novella, and I am so so glad!!! I could not stop devouring every word of this novella!! Quinn and Collen pull you in and keep you on the edge of your seat. Every time I thought I knew what would happen next, the author surprised me, but in the best way possible. And holy plot twist!!! I absolutely need more of this duo.

please be aware of the trigger warnings, they are there for a reason.

ARC Review

I received this ARC from the author and omg I’m so glad! I usually read slow but I zoomed right through this. There definitely are triggers so read the warning and if you don’t have triggers please give the novella a chance because it is such a good read!!! I definitely didn’t see the twists coming.

Quinn…a girl who just can’t die even when she asks for it. She's ready to accept death and she goes to the roof to jump in hopes for the means to an end when a stranger..a complete mystery person, basically talks her down nonchalantly letting her know if she wants to die, this might not be the way to go about it but also not talking her out of it either. The way he speaks to her and his handsome looks and the way he looks deep into her eyes has her mesmerized making her second guess everything. They talk and it’s just so easy. It’s as if it makes her forget the bad things in life. She feels safe with him to talk freely even though he’s a complete stranger. They don’t even tell each other their names until the end of their conversation but there is like this gravity pull between them that’s so odd as they just met. They finally give each other their name as they part from each other. Because she was so intrigued by the end of their conversation she had to look up his name because it sounded just way too familiar for some reason. Searching for him when he disappeared was a stronger need she had than wanting to jump before speaking with him in the first place.

I could go on but don’t wanna spoil too much. I just wasn’t expecting where this story headed with its plot twist. I don’t usually read fast but I soared right through this. I didn’t want this to end and now need more.

I felt the pain and depth in this story completely. It is very heavy. I can’t even place it into a particular genre but definitely read this if you like books with a twist!

Again I want more!!

Go read it for yourself and enjoy! Don’t forget to star this up because it’s a 5star for me for sure!!!

I always start my reviews after the 1st chapter, easier to remember things. 1st off the cover is BEAUTIFUL! that alone would make me buy this book. I love how the author describes the main women. The aunt has hate for the wrong person. I hate the Uncle. Chapter 2 "The thought of someone else knowing and seeing my shame, knowing that i let something like that happen without fighting back" (broke my heart). I find it a little weird that she was so open and honest to a complete stranger. A guardian!. Destiny, everything happens for a reason.. This was a great book. I couldn't put it down (haven't had a book like that in while) it was well written. Only problem, it didn't feel finished. I wanted more and there isn't anymore. Still a 5 star read!

Once I was Alive is the first book I've read by author S.C. Jones, and I hope it isn't the last. In this 100 page novella, Ms. Jones managed to craft a tale that created a full spectrum of emotions.

Quinn is done with her life, she is not strong enough to go continue living the "craptastic" life she was dealt and decided that she would take matters into her own hands. Everything is going as planned until the blue eyed stranger changes everything.

Please note, this book may cause triggers for some. However, if this is something you're interested in reading, I highly recommend it. You will be in for quite an unexpected ride.

This is a cute short story. It is very fast past for the most part (one area with a lot of talking on a roof top is pretty lengthy, but otherwise very fast pace). I will admit, I had ideas of how it was going to go, and while a couple of areas I was right on target, there were areas that I was completely off base of how I thought the story went. However, I think that is what makes a good story. Some areas predictable, but some areas completely go a different direction.

The only reason that I didn't give this 5 stars is I feel like it could have been a bit more in-depth and a little more drawn out. I am not sure if the ending was like that because the author plans to expand in the series, or if it is meant as a stand alone that is letting the reader use their imagination.

Whatever the case, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it. I will let you know I did receive a ARC of this book, but my opinion is my own and was not based off of receiving the book.

I was happy to receive this book as an ARC

This book was full of twists and turns, trigger warning to be advised of as it mentions suicide and sexual assault, a girl overcome by grief and horrible events wants it all over, she meets a man he changes her outcome. Now she must be strong and fight for him through twist and turns you will never see coming.

Holding my breath for the next book! Could not put this book down, finished it in a couple of hours. Give me more

Have you ever found yourself questioning what may have happened in your life if you just made one choice different, chosen a different path than the one you originally did? This story is the should've, could've, would've of Quinn and how significantly different her life was after an event was changed. I recommend giving it a chance!

I received this as an ARC and went into it pretty blind. The first thing I have to bring attention to is the cover, it's absolutely beautiful. The cover alone had my interest immediately.
This story has a phenomenal plot line, it kept me drawn in from start to finish. Once you think you know where the story is going the plot twist hits you, and it's incredibly done.

CHECK FOR TRIGGER WARNINGS

I devoured this book. It was absolutely amazing. The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. I never saw the ending coming. I would 100% read anything these characters showed up in. I want more it was so good. The emotions were everything you’d want in a book. As someone who has dealt with their fair share of SA. It was refreshing to see a character face and overcome it. Every reader is different so you may not see it the way I did. But to be Quinn is a warrior and a survivor. And don’t even get me started on the roof scene. That blew my mind.

ARC Review

"For now, I'll keep calling you Gloomy Girl and I'll stay as Tattoo Guy." - Mystery Man with tattoos

First and foremost, read the warning at the start of the book. Just in preparation for when you read because chapter one launches right into everything. If you like dark themes with a happy ending, you will enjoy this very short read!

Quinn Sullivan's tired. Tired of this life, this cruel hand she was dealt, and having to face it alone. She's ready to accept Death even though it seems to keep evading her! Rushing to the roof she is ready to jump when a mysterious stranger approaches her. Simply asking if she has really thought this through. Being stunned by his question and his handsome appearance, Quinn begins talking to him.

Finding out he's easy to talk to and comforting. There's also this undeniable pull toward him that she cannot explain. Neither of them have stated their actual names yet, just talking. Observing the people and things around them. But when the man with tattoos reveals his name, it sets Quinn on a course that she never thought she would be on. One that has her pursing it harder than wanting to jump!

This story sucked me into the pages so quickly! And let me just say. . .THANK GOODNESS for the EPILOGUE! I was like um no, no, it cannot be. I loved Quinn and tattoo man so much and their dynamic together. There was instant attraction on both sides but a barrier between. This book gave me "Not for the Faint of Heart" vibes.

I liked how Quinn figured out being a sacrificial lamb wasn't the way to go or to really have a life. Also there was a big twist in the book that I loved so much. But was also screaming NO. Just hang onto the ride it is a very fun one and again this story DOES end in a happily ever after. Pinkie promise.

This is a very short read being only 104 pages in length. There are some dark elements within this book and some heavy material. There's also some language. But this was a very good read and you will be cheering for Quinn also saying oh no a lot. I loved all of the cast, except for a certain someone. . . You will completely understand why when you read the book.

Enjoy this dark read with a happy ending and give the author some stars!

Initial Thoughts

A quick, 100 page novella read that does not lack in twisting plot points. Following a high school student’s tragic life in meeting someone who isn’t what they appear to be and discovering more about herself than she (and I as the reader) was prepared for.

Spice: no spice, no rating
Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tropes: Insta love, billionaire, little age gap,
Kindle Unlimited: yes
Series: yes, first of
Cliffhanger: yes
POV: dual but mostly FMC

Review

I received this book as an ARC!

The FMC, Quinn, has led a truly horrid life with her aunt, uncle and sister. Please check TW before reading this book. Just when she decides to end it all, a mysterious and hot stranger appears on the rooftop with her. After hearing how her aunt, her sister’s boyfriend and even her neighbor/friend had all failed her, I had high hopes that this stranger would be the one to save her.

Their chemistry and communication was lovely. I was absolutely ready for them to fall madly in love, knowing they were already on the way there.

This is where the plot twists start. As it turns, without giving away spoilers, the mystery man is even bigger of a mystery than we originally thought. It caught me off guard at first but wasn’t outside of the realm of possibilities. This first main twist packaged everything up quite nicely for the two to run off into the sunset to live their HEA.

This is where the second twist comes into play. Just when I think all is about to be butterflies and rainbows, the rug is snatched out from under us. Quite brilliantly so, even. Though I must admit to not enjoying this plot point whatsoever. It left me reeling, trying to put together the pieces of explanation the author left scattered through the final pages. Again, without giving away too much, this twist changed everything in a snap 180 degree turn. I found it difficult to reconcile with what we’d spent approximately 80% of the book learning about the FMC’s world. It even changed the MC a bit, making him recognizable but tinged with characteristics not like who we were initially introduced to.

I am curious to have more of an explanation to that last twist, which I expect in future books but I’m not sure I will read them.

ONCE I WAS ALIVE is a novella that is a quick read, but it is also an emotional rollercoaster as we ride every high and hit the withdrawal symptoms that the characters’ endures. This book was heart-wrenching in its emotional angst, highs and lows of the two main characters’ struggles as they help each other try to get what they each need. This is Quinn Sullivan and Collen Salvatore’s story. Quinn is hiding a painful and paralyzing problem that is causing her to be withdrawn and depressed and since her sister died in an automobile accident, she has no one that she can talk to openly about the cause of her pain. While on the school’s rooftop, Quinn has a chance encounter with a stranger—Collen. Who is Collen and why was he on the rooftop at the same time as Quinn? Was this a coincidence or planned? Collen talks to Quinn, and she finds that she is able to open up to him. The imagery was so vivid, you could visualize everything and I got such insight into the two characters’ head. I fell head over heals for Quinn and Collen, and I have no doubt you will too. This was a flawless sensation that captivated me, and it will be hard to put this book down once you get started. I wasn’t expecting the turn this story took; it was quite an unexpected revelation that may leave you flabbergasted but it is jaw-dropping good! Just when you think you have it all figured out, then BAM—it takes a new turn making you realize how wrong you were. This was an intense, twisted, and moving book—it’s a story of grief, anger, hope, recovery, and secrets, and how sometimes the right person comes along at the moment we need them most. Will Collen and Quinn be able to get past all the abhorrent circumstances that caused each of them a lot of pain? What happens next? Well, read this amazing story and find out—you won’t regret it! This is the first time I read S.C. Jones’ book, but I assure you it will not be the last. There are some triggers, so adhere to the WARNINGS! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Talk about twisted. I did not think I was going to finish this in one sitting. I thought it would be my weekend read. Nope! No! Instead I went on a roller-coaster that had me wanting to set that man - he who shall not be named! - on fire and dance around his body, while all at the same time fall in love with Collen 😍

Quinn deserves the world. Anybody who is willing to put anyone above themself in the name of protection/love deserves the world. She so selflessly took a bunch of crap from a man who was supposed to love her and keep her safe like any parent would. My heart broke so much because I felt a kinship toward her. And then there is Collen, a young man who had to grow up too soon. I think for his age and his role at such a young age he has mastered the art of millionaire asshole, but his soft spot for Quinn pacifies him. Well, totally disarms him to be honest.

I like to think of this book like a dream within a dream. A dream that's full of heartbreak. A dream that's full of saving. A dream that's full of love. A dream that is what unconditional love should feel like, or love at first sight. Because this book will make you confused, sad, angry, and I guarantee that you will want to cry. At least I did.

Wow. The plot twists I honestly didn’t see coming. This does contain spoilers so be prepared for those.
In the beginning you meet an 18 year old girl who is having a hard life. Her family life is a mess and she thinks a loved one died and that it was her fault. Not wanting to deal with it anymore, she wants to end her life … well here’s where she meets the wonderful collen aka tattoo guy! He convinces her theres more to life and makes her understand that her life means something and that it’s worth living. But plot twist is he’s technically a ghost but not really because another plot twist reveals it was all a dream! She ends up telling him about her dream; things that actually are real and will happen because time has jumped back. Her love for him overrules her brain for second but it’s a happy outcome.

It is a happy ending for everyone involved except her creepy uncle. Love the author for taking that garbage out because nobody deserves what he was doing.

Overall highly recommend this. Definitely made me cry but it was so good. Didn’t expect all the twists and turns this had.

*****18+********* I received this as an arc from the author and I want to thank her (S.C. Jones) for letting me read this for review, and oh my goodness did I absolutely love this book! It was a roller coaster! Sad and beautiful at the same time and her writing is beautiful! Definitely check trigger warnings before reading this book but if you aren’t triggered easily I would highly recommend this book to anyone over the age of 18! This book once I was alive is about an 18 year old girl named Quinn and she doesn’t know her parents and is raised by her aunt and uncle, she is also very unhappy and she decides she wants to take her own life because she has been sexually assaulted. The twists and turns in this book will have you at the edge of your seat! I could not put it down! And it is now available on Amazon!!

Reading the blurb, you might think you have it all figured out, but in all honesty, you don't, so PICK UP THIS BOOK NOW!

I'm SPEECHLESS right now! WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO FEEL????????

After staring at the wall for five minutes, I've started writing this.

My emotions ranged from anger to sadness to hurt to peace to horror to surprise to praying everything gets right to restlessness because I want more!!

This is a short story, will take you 60-90 minutes but has ALL THE FEELS.
I've cried for the girl who is facing things so others don't have to, I've cried for the girl who thinks there's no other way worth going, but mostly I've cried for the girl who for once found a friend, a partner but faces the risk of losing it all.

“𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐦𝐞,” 𝐈 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭.
~ I knew this line was gonna destroy me and it surely did (╥﹏╥)
(I have so many more quotes highlighted!!)

The author has a way with words because firstly, so many emotions packed in less pages and secondly because I didn't see the second twist coming. The ending is just wow...like wow, what's next!?

DEFINITELY GONNA READ MORE OF @S.C. Jones's WORK🙌🏼

AHHH the roller coaster of emotions this book just had me on.

"God doesn't help those who don't help themselves and I lacked that ability. I never helped myself, but what if I can help him."

It started with a hook that did not allow me to put it down. My heart hurt so bad for Quinn, I could not possible imagine her going through with her plan or accepting her suffering as her end but it got real interesting when she met the mysterious man on the roof and let me just say, I DID NOT SEE THAT TWIST COMING!!

I'm a sucker for soulmates and this novella delivered, Quinn and Collen now hold a piece of my heart. I read this with baited breath, hoping that Quinn would not follow through with her plans and got taken by surprise completely. It's very seldom that a book surprises me like this and for a novella to pack this punch is incredible. It was my first time reading anything by Jones and her writing is expectional. Everything about this novella had me on the edge of my seat and I simply cannot wait to read more about Quinn and Collen!

Go in blind! Best advice I can give for this read.

It’s nothing like I’ve read before and everything I never knew I needed. I was up until 2:30 in the morning finishing it because I COULDN’T pry myself to put my kindle down. That’s a lie….I tried to put it down and be responsible and go to sleep at one point, but the attempt lasted a useless and torturous ten minutes before I found myself reaching for my kindle. 🤪

Because I highly recommend going in blind I don’t want to say too much about the story. What I will say is that the writing style is easy to vibe with and the world building and characters are well written and brought to life. If you like raw deep reads then this is a book you’ll devour.

SC Jones is a new to me author and if this was hands down a five star read for me. I’m so ready and anxious for book two to make it’s way into my life.

This book was not what I expected but in a good way!

So she decides she done with the world but someone unknown shows and helps her work through all this pain and guilt. She finds out he's dying and she wants to save him.

Later she finds out this was all a dream her sister is alive, her aunt is trying to make it up to her and her abusive uncle is dead is the car accident that killed her sister in the beginning but she can't shake Colleen dying even if it hasn't happened yet....

This book is full of twists and turns. It pulls you in and keeps you turning pages. Quinn is living in a nightmare situation. Her way out is death. She meets Collen and is going to save him.

Is Quinn hallucinating or is this real…arises with every twist. What is real? Who is dead/alive? Definitely a good quick read and I definitely want to read the next book.

Quote: Death is a dark shadow that looms over all of us. He watches you as you sleep. Waits for you in dark alleys ready to pounce the moment you make a wrong turn. I really struggled with this review score. This is an amazing book with twists, great characters, and a fabulous story. Quinn is struggling (Trigger warning - thoughts of suicide bc of sexual abuse; abuse is never described in detail), and on the day she decides to end it all, she meets a stranger who makes her reconsider. And the strange man has secrets of his own. Secrets that are life changing for them both.
I really liked this story, and I would have given it a 4⭐️, but the spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar mistakes were too distracting. If those kinds of things don’t bother you as you read and you like love stories, you’ll be fine. Just be aware of that and the possible triggers.

I was given the chance to read this book as an arc reader.

A short book of 102 pages had gripped all my feelings and thoughts, i couldn’t put it down and i couldn’t stop thinking about it.
The writing is so good, the dialogues amazing, the character building - every single character is like someone you could meet and know, the human psychology is perfectly mirrored.
I loved this book so much.
Trigger warning - mention of sexual assault and suicide.
I don’t want to tell anything about the Plot - but here are some little emotional connections i had while reading it- if you loved „All the bright places“ by Jennifer Niven, if „The book of night“ by Holy Black left you a little heartbroken then this book is for you.

And there is going to be a second book, this makes me so happy!

I absolutely loved this book. Once I Was Alive is a novella that has the main character Quinn stuck in a situation that is unbearable. There seems to be no hope for her. Quinn decides that her only solution is to jump off the roof and end her life. While on the roof Quinn encounters a man named Collen. These two spend hours discussing their lives, their struggles and Quinn comes to several realizations about herself and life.
Although this book is short it packs a lot of stuff in it. There are some triggers so read the warning beforehand, but they were handled very delicately. A great quick read.

This is my first review ever!!!!!
I received this as an ARC! I started this book and was HOOKED! It deals with some touchy subjects so check your “TW” but it was handled with such care and I honestly couldn’t get enough of this book! The description of the characters was spot on, it really puts you there with them! I had to just keep reading to find out what happened! I want more of Quinn and Collen! There were so many twists and turns. My emotions were everywhere-yes I cried! But Oh my goodness, such an Amazing book! I can’t wait to jump into some other books by this author! 15/10 recommend reading this book!!
