"Take care of yourself before you take care of anyone else. Make sure you have enough of you to go around. It's so easy to be there for others, but we drop the ball when it comes to self care."

Murder in Red Hook by Theresa Varela was the #ReadPuertoRican August pick and it was such a delight. This is the second installment of the Daisy Muñiz mysteries and I will be anxiously waiting for the next one. I am completely in love with the characters. They embody what community and found family looks They accept each others' humanity. There is balance in their dynamic as friends as they switch support roles. They are in different stages of sobriety and spirituality but show up for each other and their community. They bear each other's burdens as needed and show us what honest and open relationships look like.

Varela's writing is full of heart, tenderness and deep empathy. The mystery and suspense had me tearing through the pages. The setting was Red Hook, Brooklyn and I loved the authentic Nuyorican feel. The Spanglish, the camaraderie of the tenants/friends and the worry of having to become caregivers for elders felt familiar. Varela tackled some heavy themes with care. She showed the humanity of addiction, recovery & relapse, homophobia in latinx culture, anxiety & mental illness, religious stigma, complicated family relationships, accepting change & new beginnings and grief. With everything going on while in the midst of the murder investigation, Varela reminds us through the characters that the community can only stay healthy if the individuals practice self care and accept help when needed.

If you enjoy stories with strong, resilient characters that resemble ordinary people and cozy, mysteries that keep you guessing then give the Daisy Muñiz series a try. Theresa Varela is an award winning, indie author who writes amazing, relatable mysteries with just the right amount of noir elements. If you love mysteries and noir and want to support an indie author visit Varela's website and buy her books.
