The title story features a man who drinks because of the pain. He drinks because of the squeaky things. He drinks because the moon makes terrible sounds. On a night by the sea, a young girl will show him how to escape the moon and all the other horrors eating him from the inside. The shower-inducing concluding tale,"The Sex Beast of Scurvy Island," is a gory and bizarre horror comedy featuring a group of young pornographers called upon to find and bring to justice the man or creature who has been impregnating all the prostitutes of a tropical island. This collection also features "The Man With the Face Like a Bruise" and "The Photographer."
Andersen Prunty lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio. He writes novels and short stories. Visit him at notandersenprunty.com, where he posts a free story every Friday.
I actually rate this like a million and a half starts because it's short and cheap. The fact that I wrote it doesn't even factor into it. If you have something short and cheap, I'll give it a million and half stars too.
I got a story collection with the same title, from Amazon. It had 4 different shorts from Prunty. I made a separate review for "The Sex Beast of Scurvy Island" which was part of collection.
"The Night the Moon Made a Sound" a man is sick, meets with a six year old girl who takes him to a place where the moon doesn't make a sound. Great Ghost Story! 5 stars
"Man with the bruise Face" Finds his wife cheating, already on the edge after his child died. Takes a Louisville Slugger to a blood splashing ending 5 stars.
The other story called "The photographer" I didn't really care for. Worth the money. Buy a Copy
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories! The writing was suberb with just enough tension and previewing of the crux of the stories to keep the reader interested without making them feel that it was too difficult to understand or tha it was too obvious. The subject is qute dark but not too depressing. I would recommend to people who like dark detective novels and thriller films. I only gave it 4 stars because I prefer lighter subject matter and it has nothing to do with the quality of the collection.
Excellent group of short stories raning from extreme to truly laugh out loud bizarro. I picked it up cheap through Amazon on the Kindle. I had read Scurvy Island in the Bizarro magazine perviously. Highly recommended to anyone who loves Bizarro and would like a fast read. Here's hoping Andersen delves into short stories more in the future.
When I did read of the short story "The Night The Moon Made A Sound" I confess that in ways, I did cry. It is one of my most favorite stories from Andersen, the top will always be of Xerostrata, but still this, this is a book that I do loan to others in order to show them why they should read his work.
Some of these short stories were better than others. As is often the case with Andersen (who I truly enjoy reading) his endings always feel a little ADHD to me. He's plugging along, and suddenly- look! A new shiny thing! Must wrap this up and start on something else!
I wish he would give his endings the same attention to detail he gives his beginnings.
