When an Alzheimer’s patient goes missing, no one thinks it’s more than a daughter’s careless mistake …except Jessica. When members of the patient’s family go missing, foul play becomes a certainty.
The Bitterroot County Sheriff’s Office and the whole search and rescue team kick it into high gear with the disappearance of Sheriff Reid and some of the last surviving family members.

I'm really enjoying the Jessica Anderson series. Having snooped about on the dog training and police procedural aspects, I can attest to authenticity as far as my Google skills take me.
I love the pack of pups - Mitch, Milo, Queenie, Oso, Acer, and the rest. Since the dogs in the book are based on real animals, the behavior and quirks of each ring true.
The plot of this book in the series was not as strong as in the first two books. I'm afraid I got a bit confused (like the poor woman with Alzheimer's) and my mind wandered off occasionally. This is my problem, not the book's presentation. A few too many names of both people and dogs (though who can forget Pine Tree, the cat) have me using the search function in my Kindle to recall a person's function. Not the main characters, of course, but there are a lot of moving parts here and I hope to be forgiven for wanting ME to remember what I should.
So, that's my confession and why I took one star off the rating. A few too many folks who really didn't need to be named at all. They're the furniture that decorates the story as the plot moves forward.
I heard tell there are quite a few more books in this series already plotted. I hope they come fast and furious (please don't use that in any title, D.L.).
That's it. Get the books, read them starting at book 1 because more revelations come to light about Jessie and Landon and you don't want to miss anything.
This series "hops around " a bit, at least for me, so I have to admit that I can't always follow. And I don't always know what the characters are talking about when it comes to the training of the dogs or when they talk about drones. The writer seems to think that I do or should know. Nope, I don't. But I do look forward to each new book and I grab it as soon as I am able to - the stories are complex and interesting. Some things seem a little farfetched, such as the lengths some people will go to for money and power, until you follow the national news and hear what some people have already done for both. After reading any of the books in this series, especially this last one, I really hope the good guys outnumber the bad.
If you don't know Jessie and her dogs, get to know them. They are amazing. Yes, as Amazon promises, this story begins with a missing woman who has Alzheimer's. Allegedly. No one, human or canine, can find her. Where is the scent? Why are even Jessie's dogs having trouble? I can't even tell you about that, without adding spoilers. Let's just say that this small event spirals, connecting to multiple events, each one bigger than the one before it.
Then there's poor Sheriff Reid. He didn't want the job and, frankly, he's not got the hang of it. Not yet. And he is needed. Because Bitterroot has a whole lot of very bad going on. A whole lot. And damn if Jessie and her dogs don't always seem to find it. Reid wants to be able to work with Jessie & her dogs, because they are SO good at what they do. Except she sort of scares the crap out of him. If the PTSD weren't bad enough, and when it hits, it's bad, there is the whole thing of what she and her dogs find.
I will admit that I don't like all the characters--talking about the good guys here. No need to feel guilty for not liking the bad guys. Even though I really wouldn't want to spend time hanging out with some of them, they are well drawn, very real. As it Bitterroot, pretty much a character in it's own right.
Keur deals with a lot of gender issues here. We're in Idaho, not known as one of the most progressive spots in the country, and a fair number of the men have trouble dealing with a woman who is strong, albeit with cracks. Jessie is many things, especially very human.
Jessie's K-9 thrillers continue with multiple deaths, mysteries and schemes. Battling PTSD, Jessie has to trust her K-9s more than ever in this adventure that pit her against her dad, granddad and certain county officials.
I loved everything except the final chapter that wrapped up the story too quickly and without substance. I hope there's another novel because this ending was not satisfying.
This is the 3rd book in the series! As with the previous books it is full of twists and turns and lots of drama. What i love best is how the dogs fit into the story. I feel like I am really learning about SAR more than other K9 stories I have read. I sure hope another boom is coming out before long! I highly recommend it and the whole series!!
The sheriff is faced with the truth that all is not peaceful in his county with a double homicide made to look like suicide. An Alzheimer’s patient is left to die in a deserted part of town, and a young man is knifed to death. Connecting the dots threatens the sheriffs life and Jessie with her dog team is called in to find the Sheriff and missing baby.
Wow! Just finished this new book. It is awesome! Love Jessica and her dog pack. She is smart, intelligent and an amazing dog handler and trainer. The Sheriff is an interesting character. Jessica's family is great. Hope there is a new book soon.
I enjoyed the story. But the narrative moved too fast. The end seemed hurried. Jessica (main character) was being described in an almost autistic (my words not the writer) in her emotional maturity. I just skipped over a lot of that. I love the series and all the dog stories/training information. You will Like this quick read.
Love This type of story. Animal lover and I like that our heroine is not perfect but continues to amaze! Just wish the Sheriff was kinder and more understanding. Cannot wait to read the next one!!!
3½⭐. A good book, I am really enjoying this series, but the end fell a bit flat for me, almost too abrupt a wrap up at the end. But I will still happily read the next book in the series.
I bought this book before it was released, that should say quite a bit. Love the dogs, the tight Anderson family. Am interested in finding out what Jessica's twin is up to, and the brothers, especially the one in the seals. I'm sick of Landon 1. Caring about whether he calls Jessie a girl or a woman. 2. Mad at Jessie for finding bad things! WHAT! He wants to stuck his head in the sand and not know what's going on in his county? That's contradictory to his character, she doesn't manufacture evidence, WHAT IS HIS PROBLEM? 3. And he keeps swelling on her PTSD that isn't really PTSD, can we just get that out in the open and move on?
It keeps you guessing. There are many twists and turns, the characters are so believable you feel like you are in the story. I can not wait for the next book!!
The ending seemed rushed, but it was still good. Glad to see both main characters are being developed more fully. It makes it easier to understand the motives behind the way they act and react to certain situations.
This is the third book in the series. It starts out slow but speeds up quickly. It is as good as the first two. I am a little disappointed in the way of ends. It seems like the author rushed the ending. I am still excited and looking forward to reading book 4. Love the characters and the story lines. I definitely recommend this series for any dog lovers.
Not only a dog story but a murder mystery, A kidnapping, A family saga, A judicial problem search and rescue, contracts and negotiations. If this does not have what you want, read the next page. Very involved story with lots of characters that evolve as situations change and some of them are crooked. My o my problem with this story is * . that little * is the switch in a location or different group of people. That little * would separate a paragraph and I would have to read a few lines to figure out who's talking and where are they? Then reread and get back on the story line. Nice epilogue.
This is another really good book. There is much of interest and some fast paced suspense, together with some humour. The dogs are wonderful, as usual. I would love to see the sheriff and Jessica get together, they both need a special person in their life.
Great series for dog, cat and crime people. A must for dog lovers
Well it has happened. I started out knowing the book was crime themed with dogs. The people I quickly came to wish I knew. The dogs flawless. The writer has her chops and more. There are authors and then those who have a gift. D. L. Kept has The Gift. I thank her for giving me some great time with wonderful story lines and people. Now it is over. I wish her to please continue with this type of books. You have it.
Love this series and this book was a great addition to the series looking forward to the next one. Really enjoyed how the characters are developing with each book. Love the dogs. Have no clue where this series will take us but will definitely be along for the journey.
I really like this series. This Book 3 is so well written. I love the flow of the story, the mystery, the characters, and the animal characters. I really enjoy learning about the dogs. There are a lot of twists in this book. I look forward to the next book.
Another great read in the Jessica Anderson mystery series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, things are definitely starting to clear up regarding the various back stories that have run through all the books. Jessica and her pack of course are a main focus and I love reading about their relationships and actions. Logan continues to learn his job as sheriff with his focus on protecting his community. A superb read.
My first time reading a book from this author. Very much worthwhile. Very good read. Almost couldn't put it down. Will go back for another in the series.
Really enjoyed reading this book. Love the dogs and the whole family. I found it particularly descriptive and serious when needed describing Jessie’s PTSD and how she’s trying to live with it. This is one of my favorite series. BTW - would love to read a book about Oli and his background.
These books are the kind of fictional stories that keep your heart beating and your breathing paced to stay connected with each and ever character. I love stories involving dogs and people that love and care for them. Keep up your work, please, DL Keur! your a wonderful writer. SF; Thank you!
A fast paced mystery that definitely needs a follow up book to the seemingly squeezed in wrap up at the end. Too many loose ends for my mind. But totally enjoyed the first 2, and this one. Jessica and her family, both 2 legged and 4, are just incredible characters. Just as we are seeing the real Sheriff Landon Ried, it ends!
