Play To Win...
It's the ultimate game--the adrenaline surge of the hunt, the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. For in this game, the rules are simple: To win, you only have to kill. To lose, you will have to die...

Play To Scream...
The victims are former beauty queens found with a single rose beside their bodies. Lindsay McAllister has seen this signature before, when she was a rookie detective with the Chattanooga PD investigating the death of Judd Walker's wife, a murder that sent the handsome lawyer off the deep end. Now, Lindsay has the brutal task of telling Judd that his wife's killer has struck again, and she's going to need his help to outplay their opponent--because the killer is getting bolder, faster, and more ruthless. The game is escalating, and no one is safe.

Play To Die...
Now as the body count rises, the rules are changing. A killer will do anything to win. And the only way for Lindsay to stop a madman's twisted game is to play it herself...

Beverly Marie Inman was born on 23 December 1946 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA. Daughter of Doris Marie and Walter D. Inman Jr. A born romantic, she fell in love with The Beauty and the Beast epic at an early age, when her grandfather bought her an illustrated copy of the famous fairy tale. Even before she learned to read and write, her vivid imagination created magical words and fabulous characters inside her mind. Movies fascinated her, and by the time she was seven she was rewriting the movies she saw on television and at the local theater to give them all happy endings. By the age of nine she'd penned her first novel. She wrote short stories, TV scripts, poetry, and novels throughout high school and into college.

After her marriage to Billy Ray Beaver, the "love of her life", and the births of her two children, Beverly continued to be a voracious reader and a devoted moviegoer, but she put her writing aspirations on hold until her children were teenagers. At every age of their lives, from infancy to adulthood, the children had been a true joy to her. She devoted herself to her husband and children and considered herself one of the many selfless "supermoms" who put their family's needs first. She believed she had had it all, just not all at the same time.

In her mid-30s, Beverly returned to her former passion — writing — as a hobby, but before 40, she decided that she wanted to make writing a full-time career. And when she rediscovered an old dream — of becoming a published writer — no one was more supportive of her aspirations than her family. Her children were her greatest cheerleaders and her husband was her biggest supporter. After writing over 40 books and receiving numerous awards and nominations, as well as having books on the USA Today list and consistently on the Waldenbooks bestseller list, her career was indeed a dream come true. Having a fantastic family and fabulous friends, as well as making a living doing the one thing she had loved doing since childhood, she considered herself truly blessed. Beverly died suddenly of heart failure on 21 April 2011.

The Dying Game was a very intense and graphic romantic suspense novel that I would give 4.5 stars if possible. I was quickly caught up in the story, and found it captivating all the way through. Judd Walker was among the most tortured heroes that I have encountered, and in the beginning of the book he was not portrayed as a particularly appealing character. Although I felt sympathy for what he had been through, it was hard to imagine how his character could transform into a credible hero. By the end of the novel, I felt that he had redeemed himself, and was deserving of the heroine, Lindsay McAllister, a loving and steadfast person. I enjoyed reading about Griff Powell who was a minor character in some of the Cherokee Pointe books, and I look forward to his book.

Lindsay McAllister, a detective with the Powell Agency, has been working a serial killer case for almost four years. Lindsay first came on the case as a homicide detective for the Chattanooga Police Department. When Lindsay fell hard for Judd Walker, whose wife was murdered, she joined the Powell Agency in order to focus exclusively on this murderer dubbed The Beauty Queen Killer. His wife's murder turned Judd Walker, former district attorney, into a reclusive alcoholic who cared about nothing. Lindsay has loved Judd since soon after meeting him, and she has been his stalwart anchor in the ensuing years. Six months before the book opens, Judd's horrific behavior finally causes Lindsay to flee and stay away. When a new Beauty Queen murder takes place, Lindsay agrees to retrieve Judd and bring him to the scene. Judd and Lindsay have a very uneasy relationship in the beginning of the book due to his past actions, but Lindsay's loving and forgiving nature overcome her reticence toward him quickly. As the serial killer's spree intensifies, Judd comes to realize how much he has depended on Lindsay's care. Judd must decide if he is capable of the giving and receiving required in a relationship while Lindsay's life is endangered by the same killer who murdered Judd's wife.

I thought that this was a really good romantic suspense novel. I enjoyed the characters, and in general, the storyline, although it was rather macabre at times. There were numerous murders in the book which were described in gruesome detail. Part of the plot was left unresolved, so I look forward to reading the conclusion of it in Griffin Powell's story, The Murder Game.

This book could not hold my interest. I struggled with it until I was a little more than 3/4 finished and IT was a struggle. Finally, just put it up and got something else.

The lengthy and pointless descriptions were very annoying. This book could have shed about 150 pages by removing the verbal diarrhea. There was a lot of reiteration that I found totally unnecessary and quite frankly, insulting. I got it the first time! The character interaction was horrible. I didn't like ANY of them and it never improved. Just beat "the thing that happened 6 months ago" between Jude and Lyndsay to death. Either cough up the info or just stop bringing it up--over and over again.

Did anyone edit this book?

And Jude, he needed to get a life! Also, they had more meetings about the serial killer that were totally useless and went nowhere.

If it doesn't contribute to the story, it shouldn't be there.

The over detail in the driving directions would be comparable to my GPS. Good grief.

Big thumbs down from This Reader.

This was a re-read for me (wanted to refresh my mind before reading next in series). It was ok for me but, I in the end I just wanted it to get finished. IMO the whole book was like an over-acted play. I just didn't connect with anyone. Jude seemed to have a complete change of heart and I never really understood why. Griffin had a callous attitude one minute and a caring attitude the next, with no rhyme nor reason for either. Lindsay just simply pissed me off. I kept waiting for her to grow a backbone....never happened. I usually quite enjoy a storyline involving a serial killer and don't mind if it's graphic, but in this case I thought it was rather OTT. I never connected with the killer/s because I never got any sense of where the violence evolved from. Overall, I would give this a 1.5 and I am a little reluctant to read the next in the series. Griffin just simply annoyed me, so not sure whether I want to read his story or not. Having said all this Beverly Barton is still one of my favourite reads

Oh, dear. I'm really not having a good start to the year!

This was awful. Just truly awful.

The plot involves the hunt for a serial killer who is murdering former beauty queens. He has racked up quite a few kills over the years. Judd Walker hired a private firm owned by Griffin Powell to find the killer after Judd's wife was one of the victims four years ago. He has never gotten over his wife's death. He is driven by rage and revenge. This is bad news for Lindsay McAllister, one of Griffin's agents, who was assigned to the case. For reasons that only exist in romantic-suspense-land, Lindsay fell in love with Judd. (Seriously, I don't understand how anyone in their right mind could fall in love with Judd. He is so awful.)

Lindsay and Judd have had several months apart when the book starts, after he nearly raped her. (Yes, you read that right.) They're "forced" to work together again when the latest target actually survives for a while after the attack and reveals some important information. Also, this victim's sister got a look at the killer leaving the scene. So for reasons that only exist in romantic-suspense-land, Judd gets brought back in on the investigation, where he continues to act like an immature, belligerent asshole at every given opportunity. I'm guessing it's an accurate representation of a man driven mad with grief and rage over his wife's murder? All I can say is that it sure got tired reading about him and his selfish actions and attitude.

I just did not take to Judd at all! How could anyone? The characters all openly acknowledge the fact that he nearly raped Lindsay. I mean, that's just appalling! How can any character who's supposed to be the "hero" in a romantic suspense novel, possibly come back from that? Only in romantic-suspsense-land, I guess! And I just couldn't really bring myself to care for Lindsay either, who just pines like a lovesick puppy over Judd and is just in general a complete doormat when it comes to his treatment of her. I prefer a more take-charge heroine, who's not miserably in love with the guy that tried to rape her.

Yuck, yuck, yuck.

The plot outright sucks. If this book had approached the subject matter from, say, FBI agents tracking the killer, it could have worked better. Instead, we get lots of extraneous details about Griffin and his agency and how they try to outsmart and outwit the FBI. Why? I really don't care about that sort of jurisdictional stuff. It just gets in the way. Not that any of the investigators really do much investigating in the end! For 80% of the novel, it's, "that victim's sister saw the killer and might remember something important!" Yay. Real exciting. Things only come to a head because the killers are reaching the end of their titular game and basically out themselves to the protagonists! It's all so stunningly pointless! The investigators discover NOTHING!

And did I say killers? Yes, I did. There are actually two killers! This is not a spoiler. The blurb tells you. The blurb also tells you that Lindsay figures this out. Nope. Not at all! While the reader knows there are two killers essentially competing with each other, murdering beauty queens and getting points based on their hair colour, our protagonists - Lindsay, Griffin, the FBI agents - are all completely clueless about this fact right up until the very end! So, to add insult to injury, after 440 fucking pages, the book only reveals the identity of one of the killers. The other killer goes on to create The Murder Game, the next book in the series. Oh, and I have no idea why the killer whose identity was revealed was kept secret in the first place. He didn't have a single line of dialogue in the book and was only mentioned in passing twice!

I was face-palming hard by this point. I really felt like I had wasted my time with this stinker.

For all the focus put on Barbara Jean, the sister who saw the killer, she basically disappears from the story about halfway through. Most of the book is just the two killers killing one victim after another, while Lindsay, Judd, Griffin et al just flounder around uselessly, trying to catch up. Proceedings hit the bottom of the barrel when Griffin's team's psychiatrist/counsellor/plot device Yvette Meng shows up, and we learn that she can read thoughts.

WTF?

If you want to read a thriller about a detective pining over the guy who treats her like shit and nearly raped her, while the protagonists uselessly and cluelessly flounder around after two serial killers as countless women get murdered, you might find some value in this game. Otherwise, I would recommend you throw in the towel and pick up the Monopoly board. The arguments that game generates would be a lot more fun!

I couldn't put it down. It was an awesomely scary book that will keep you guessing almost until the end. I was completely unable to guess the identity of the killer and had to wait until the author was ready to reveal whodunit.

I read this novel out of the order of the Griffin Powell series. This is the third book and so I was confused where the relationships and the story's time line was concerned.

The Dying Game is about the Beauty Queen Killer. He's called that because he kills only people whom have been a Beauty Queen in their past. As Lindsay McAllister works to find out who killed Judd Walker's first wife and all the other BQs. As the novel goes on the kills begin to escalate, coming sooner and more brutal. Lindsay decides the only way to stop the game is to become part of the game herself.

I really enjoyed this book apart from being confused at the beginning, but that was my fault. :) I always end up liking one of the main characters. This held true, Lindsay was my favorite character.

The book itself was fairly fast-paced and thrilling. I always had this bit of excitement inside as I read, hoping that none of the main characters would be injured. All in all, great book!

Downloaded from Amazon for free and still I think this was a waste of money.

This book needed a good editor as so much unnecessary detail could have been thrown away. After introducing each character there were no further interesting developments, the characters remained two-dimensional despite long winded ramblings that went nowhere.

I grew more annoyed at the time I was wasting on this book, the only thing that kept me going was seeing the percentage read decrease and the knowledge that I could pick something else once I had finished it. Talking of which, the dénouement when it arrived was hurried and poor. It felt that even the author had become bored with this pointless story.

It's a shame I can only give it one star.

Unbelievable. I'm not sure why I keep giving Beverly Barton another shot (actually, I do -- thanks a lot library book sale), expecting things to improve, but they most certainly did NOT in this book. In fact, this may very well have been the worst one yet. We're told very early on that the main "hero" "almost raped" the heroine a few months previously, but it's okay, because he's a really good guy at heart and he had a good reason for it. Umm...excuse me? Unbelievable. Just say "no" -- to "almost rapists", and to Beverly Barton. I've read almost the entire Griffin Powell series so far, and it does NOT get better. Don't let the cheap sticker at the library book sale fool you -- there's a reason it's that price.

REVIEW OF DNF AUDIO; JUNE 15, 2024

This was so blech and the longer I listened, hoping for it to improve, the madder I got. Because I LOVED Book 5, Killing Her Softly, and Dying Game is so far from that. Where KHS was fast-paced without any fillers, DG was so bland and without the slightest bit of suspense in the plot execution and the main characters were so boring. One of the crappiest books I've picked up in a while.

Ugh, too much high-school romance cr*p among adults. (Does he really like me? etc.) Not my thing. Really need to check the genre before buying. There is now a category "romance/mystery" and I get sucked in by the mystery, but the books usually turn out to emphasize the romance. I know there are many romance fans - I am usually not one of them.

Garbage "love" story (aka sob story of girl falling for boy who can't love her back QQ) and a pretty garbage thriller overall. Just nothing really happened at all. No clues for the detective team to work through, just nout except a shitty love story build up.
Really surprised I even finished it but I think it was mostly to convince myself of what a bad book it is.

I didn't make it very far into this book. It just wasn't clicking with me. The author used flashbacks in a very clumsy way, over-hitting some romance issues, and I just plain found the reactions of the people unbelievable. This was the first book I've tried in his series. I won't try another.

OMG!! How much more gory can this author get in describing the murder of the killer's victims? Barton just goes on and on letting people be killed in her books before the killer is finally apprehended or taken out. Her description of the murders in this book was overly gruesome. Still, she holds you spellbound and wanting desperately to know the conclusion. The "romance" between Judd and Lindsay ran a very close second behind the murders in this book. The characters Sanders and Evette make you want to know more about them and Griffin Powell is another mystery that needs solving. I enjoyed this book but the gruesomeness of the murders knocked it down a star for me. If you don't like extreme violence in your books then this is not the one for you. Great plot, intriguingly strong characters, and a fairly good narrator made this a winner.

I think this would have been a better story if it focused more on the BQ Killer than Judd and Lindsay's relationship. This had action and serial murders of beauty queens, but it seemed to lack substance to the writing. The only reason I knew a little about the characters, was from reading other stories in the series. This was far from my favorite. Unlike some of the other books in this series, I really struggled to get this one finished. The relationship between Judd and Lindsay just didn't come across as believable. Since that seemed to be the focus to this story (not the killings) it just didn't keep my interest. After this one, I'm taking a break from any others in the series.

I enjoy the books in

I enjoy the books in the series EXCEPT that I find the people trying to capture the bad guys (in all 3 I have read) annoying. It's like they cannot solve a case or take 1 +1 to equal 2. Ineffective and truly of a policeman, FBI or some world renowned PI was this incredibly ineffective or sometimes down right clueless it would be surprising any cases would be solved. That is my only annoyance with her writing. I like the characters

Wow, absolutely wow, this book has left me speechless and in awe of the author. It just amazes me how the author continues to keep coming up with these amazing plot ideas.

This is an edge of ure seat gripping crime thriller, I could not put this book down, was completely taken in by the story from beginning to end.

As always I love the characters in this ongoing series of books. :-)

Beauty queens are being murdered all across the South. The FBI is leading the investigation.

Powell Private Security is also working to find the killer. Their client's wife was one of the murders. Lindsay McAllister is in love with Judd Walker. He is still drowoning in grief for his wife.

Lindsay sacrifices her dignity and self respect for Judd. That part of the story line is disturbing.

I cannot get enough of this series. I love how the characters from all the different books in the series connect. I have never been a huge romance/erotica reader, but this author does it in a way that captures my attention and holds it. The mystery of each book is addicting and the characters are so real. Great series so far and they just keep getting better and better.

I had read other books in the series that did not feature Griffin Powell as a main character. I did not like how the men treated the women in this book. Griffin was too hard on Nicole because she had to act a certain way to be taken seriously in her profession and he prefers women who act stereotypically feminine. Also, don't get me started on Judd's behavior six months ago.

The murders were too gruesome for me, but I was invested enough in that aspect of the story to continue with the next book. I hope Griffin acts better in that one.

Fantastic series.

I love this book and have re read this series several times. I felt for Lindsey as she loved Judd but he keeps spiraling since his wife was murdered years ago. The story is pretty twisted and kept me on edge. Thankfully there’s a happy ever after. I highly recommend this book.

Almost hilariously awful! Poorly written in so many ways - from stilted dialogue to wildly stereotypical characters and unbelievable plot points. So bad it’s almost go… okay, no. Just BAD.

And, spoiler, the PIs involved in solving these murders are impossibly dreadful at their jobs.

An excruciating read. Do not recommend.
