That’s a lesson I’m learning the hard way, as I race to figure out a way to outrun death. The problem is death doesn’t play fair, and each day it gets closer to what it wants most… Me. Time’s ticking, and I’m out of places to hide. The only option I have left is entrust my life to four of the most devastatingly handsome, and dangerous, men I’ve ever met.
Vampires. They’re walking embodiments of sin and power, with scars that run as deep as my own. Putting my life in their hands is risky at best, and trusting them with my heart is completely out of the question. Now with fractured memories of my past looming over me and death on my heels, I have no choice but to fight for my life if I want to keep it. What else am I going to do, die trying?
It wouldn’t be the first time.
Note from the Author: Of Glass and Lavender is the first book in the Ascension Rising Series. It’s a slow-burn paranormal romance with five love interests and no need for our main girl to choose between them. Some readers may find the content in this book upsetting, so please read the complete list of warnings provided on my website. Take care of yourself, and happy reading!
Born and raised in the Wyoming Rocky Mountains, K. R. Rainbolt, or Kennady, is a lover of cakes and all things sweet. She also has a minor obsession with suits, but who doesn't love a crisp waistcoat, right? She has been crafting stories and characters for as long as she can remember, and nothing makes her happier than bringing a character to life. Now, as a first time publisher, she's excited to share them with everyone else as well.
Kennady spends a lot of time writing, both for her novels and the occasional video game mod. When she's not immersed in one of her stories, she can be found spending time with the love of her life Dominic, or playing her fur baby Marlie.
Kennady loves to bowl, fish, play video games, and watch movies (the spookier the better). Along with this she is big on the world of science and research, and as a Chemical Engineer she loves to include hints of her studies into her novels.
Lastly, as her grandmother said, always remember to live life. After all, you only have one, so you better spend it doing something you love!
Wow, I'm blown away by this book. It's the first in a series- The Ascension Rising series. It's really slow burn but TOTALLY worth it! The world building is phenomenal. I felt like I was truly there! I love the world that K.R. Rainbolt created. It's full of magical creatures- vampires, ghosts, sirens. I loved that.
Aaliyah is different. She has memory problems and oh yeah, she keeps dying (rending)! She's a very strong girl though. Her and her best friend (who is a ghost!) are trying to find out exactly what she is and how she came to be. Due to circumstances, they're put in a ridiculous amount of danger. Four vampires are her keepers now. She believed they were dangerous creatures... but are they really?
The main male characters- Fallon, Eirik, Adrian and Osiris are all amazing but intense. Can they help her find out who she really is?
Now. I usually don't go for slow burn books. I like smut lmao. BUT! This book was incredible from beginning to end. The tension between the vampires and Aaliyah is STRONG. I enjoyed that aspect!
I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. K.R. Rainbolt will definitely become a one-click author for me.
safety: virgin heroine slow burn (not much has happened yet) safe cliffhanger ♡
OK, do you understand that you do not need 10% of your book to describe one situation, 4 pages for a thought, it's fkng tedious to read. Your characters had to wait for you to elaborate what they were suppose to think while bad shits were happening to the H! That's on you K. R.! you should have let them be the predators they were, already absolutely focused on the H, and not having 3 pages of nervous breakdown, they are grown ass vampires, ffs! And that goes for the rest of the book.
Very well written, something I don’t see as often anymore. Plot was fresh. Mystery galore. Also, she did a great job of making each character distinct; male leads in RH books sometimes blend together and that bugs me, but that’s was absolutely not the case here. Main F lead was not TSTL, she had a lot of inner strength. I also really appreciate that the trauma she experienced is not immediately fixed by the guys; if I could pick a pet peeve that would be it and it was SO refreshing to read a book where that wasn’t the case. I think the author handled past traumas really well and in way that also made for a lot of meaningful and sweet interactions with the MMCs (without, IMO, being overly sappy). Wow, yeah, this isn’t one to miss. I can’t believe I have to wait for next one!! But if it’s as well done as this one, I’d rather the author take their time! Seriously good work for a debut author, one I think that has done better right out of the gate than several of the other popular authors in the genre (no shade! Just facts)
I want to start this review off with a positive - this is in no way a bad book or a bad story - I did enjoy Of Glass and Lavender and the mystery in the plot was enough to make me want to read the next in the series.
✅ Mysterious plot ✅ Paranormals ✅ An FMC that has an unknown background
BUT….
There were enough “tiny” problems in this book for me that made me incredibly frustrated at times.
Aaliyah, our FMC started out fairly strong in the first few scenes, but once she is living with the 4 vampires, she turns into a scared, tiny, weak woman. It was like she just regressed the more time she spent with them, like she was a literal damsel in distress.
I honestly thought we were over writing about perfect, blindingly gorgeous and tiny FMCs? Apparently not. The words “Tiny”, “Little”, and “Small” were overused throughout the book. The men were obsessed with how tiny and soft the FMC was - it was nauseating.
The obsession with the men wearing suits like they were at a cosplay event was weird to me and it just didn’t gel with the picture I had in my mind of the vampires. They sounded like caricatures… Fallon wearing all white suits, Osiris in his 1920s gangster pinstripe suits... yeah it wasn't for me.
I also feel for such a lengthy book, we could have gotten some more background on the love interests? It just feels very vague right now and we know more about their personalities than anything else and to be honest, they felt very stereotyped.
The “research” that the author supposedly did for the lore of the book was lacking in its most basic form. Sure, Osiris was researched - to a point, I’ll give the author that, but a rudimentary google search about Irish Forenames wouldn’t have gone a miss.
Note to the author: Fallon may sound like a cool name, but it is a surname and no Irish person on the planet has Fallon as a forename.
I was also irked with the use of Fallon's "Early Irish accent" I am at a loss as to what this is supposed to mean? Early Irish would refer to the language not the accent. If his parents were from a certain part of Ireland, he would more than likely have developed his accent based on theirs and picked up a bit of the dialect too, as most children of immigrants have. And he apparently also has an Aboriginal Australian accent as well and yet from the way he speaks, he speaks like an American. Again, the author's vagueness with character's and information in this story is perplexing to me.
I don't know, I feel like the guys could have come from a more diverse background of cultures. I think the whole euro/middle eastern thing has been done to death and we could use a injection of other cultures that we might not know as much about in the west. But that's just my 2 cent.
The best friend Eliza - she's only known her 6 months - I honestly find it hard to believe that Aaliyah, who appears to have been tortured for most of her young life, would easily trust a stranger and become bosom buddies in such a short space of time. I really found Eliza to be overtly childish in her actions and her two mates putting their literal lives on the line for someone they barely knew was also astonishing to me. Eliza and her mates honestly felt like clumsy window dressing to flesh out Aaliyah's already bare personality.
Plot-wise there was not a great deal going on here. This book felt more like a lengthy introduction for what was to come, rather than an actual story with moving parts. We don't know how old Aaliyah actually is, we know some very light details on her background and what she went through, but by the time I finished the book, I felt like I came out of a 400+ page book knowing very little of anything that was going on except for Aaliyah and the males being overly critical and self-loathing of themselves - it just didn't feel like a developed story at all.
Spice - there was none. Not even one steamy scene. All we got was an extremely chaste kiss at the end of the book. I usually like slow burns but I honestly thought we would be rewarded with something more than an innocent kiss.
Verdict: If you have nothing else to read and like vampires, give this a go.
Of Glass and Lavender by K.R. Rainbolt is the first in the Ascension Rising series. Also a first for this author. We meet Aaliyah who sees ghosts and dies periodically. She calls it Rending. Through some unfortunate circumstances, she ends up getting kidnapped and sold at an auction. Thats where she meet Osiris, Fallon, Eirik, and Adrian. All Vampires who are drawn to her but don't know why. This is a cool world. Aaliyah's best friends are a Siren and a ghost named Prince. Super slow burn - nothing going on yet between the FMC and the MMC's. But its building. No bullying. No cheating. Looking forward to the next book. Looking forward to seeing where this is going.
As a debut book from this author, this was amazing. Everything from the story to the characters, the world building with magic, various races and hierarchies. Brilliant.
This is definitely a slow burn but it’s done so perfectly. It truly allows the relationships to develop and you get to see most of it as it happens. Of course, I’m always sad when you miss out on scenes and are just told that it happened, but there was still plenty of true building in this.
Fallon, Osiris, Eirik and Adrian are all so awesome. Then there’s Prince. To pick just one is a travesty. We’re reading a ‘why choose’ so you won’t need to.. They’re all so distinctly different and you can easily distinguish who’s who and who said something as well.
I truly enjoyed seeing things through Aaliyah’s eyes, pretty much experiencing everything for the first time with her. She may be told one thing but as she learns, she forms her own opinions and isn’t afraid to stand up to someone when needed. She has her trauma’s and they limit her deeply. But it doesn’t stop her from speaking her mind, as needed. She’s a tough cookie and is able to push past her fears and trauma and do what she needs to do.
Having this book with multiple POV’s is fabulous. You get to see from everyone’s eyes throughout and it helps give a deeper understanding of each character even though you’ll always have more questions! Believe me.
I can’t wait to see more from K.R. Rainbolt because this was a journey I’ll want to take again and again. I can’t wait for Of Lavender and Ash. It won’t come soon enough.
Have a hankering for sweet as sin possessive Vampires that border on feral, a damaged FMC that refuses to let her past control her, and 500 pages of slow burn, high tension, soul shattering romance? Then you you'll love Of Glass and Lavender!
Death always wins.

This is a truly sensational read. Holy cow I was utterly transfixed and have not put the book down once from start to finish. I absolutely loved each character, how each vampire has such a history, such a past that truly affects their day-to-day decisions and character, I adore Ali and just everything we are learning about her personality, her awful, terrifying history, and her incredible strength. I absolutely love the clever references to ancient history - Egypt, Rome, Vikings - it just adds so much to the flavour of their stories and characters, and sets my imagination on fire! I can't more highly recommend this book to you..... It is a must read. It is also a good chunky book, not one of these finished in 2 hrs reads.... Noooo, this is hours of pleasure. Slow burn, RH, first book in a series and I've already pre-ordered book 2. It's not out for a while but then I'll just have the pleasure of devouring this one again the day before it releases!!
Okay, to start I’m in absolute awe of the world and character building of this start of a new series. Aaliyah is a mystery to herself and others because her memories are mostly gone, she keeps dying (rend) and coming back, the memories that have come back are 98% not good, her best friend is a ghost, and she still has no idea what she is. While trying to find what could be a last chance to find out what she is & hopefully save her, she and her friend are put in danger but Aaliyah ends up (after a bit of angst) with 4 vampires, of which her friend has taught her t be terrified of. These 4 aren’t what she expected though & with their help and some trust, maybe they can help her. So, I’m beyond excited for the next book because the spice potential has me on edge. I have my theories on Prince that I’d like to know more about, and I super really need them all to open up to each other more because that cliffhanger gave me chills! Excellent read, 5⭐️
Of Glass and Lavender by KR Rainbolt is an absolutely fantastic read! It's written exactly how I like my books: the plot, the mystery are revealed piece by piece and in such a way that left me binge reading late into the night, and her character work is so, so good. Ali and the boys feel fleshed out, and each of their characters and voices her unique and distinct. On top of that, the way their relationships are building, though slow burn, is believable and charming.
I'm literally so in love with this book, these characters, this world. I can't wait to read what comes next! I highly, highly recommend!
Only a few chapters in but I love this already! I love how the author builds suspense and the characters and doesn't info dump but the action is flowing nicely with the storytelling.
The world building is great, same with the main characters.
The FMC are innocent in some ways, but also strong and brave. She’s searching for answers to why she keeps Rending, as she calls it.
This search brings her to the MMC. Four men closed off and afraid to feel, and a ghost who can’t communicate easily.
I fell in love with them all.
While not much spice yet, the suspense is there and Rainbolt has built a solid foundation to build on. I fell into her world and I’m not ready to climb out yet. Can’t wait for the next one.

Ive just found out that Of Glass and Lavender was the first book by this writer which makes me like it even more now but i can honestly say that it was a knockout book to start off with. Now i feel like ive found another author to add to my collection of ones that i really like. The style of writing is something that completely drew me in.
Back to this book Aaliyah (FMC) is a complicated character with her memory loss, a friend thats a ghost and a traumatic past which she has flashbacks about that bring on episodes that end in her dying. She doesnt let that define her though so when events in her life lead her to Vampires - Adrian, Osiris, Eirik and Fallon she embraces it and it brings out her character more.
I really liked the dynamic that Aaliyah had with the guys. There was a genuine sweetness even though they were all completely out of their depth with each other. Damn that cliffhanger ending!!! Still this was a killer start to this series and i cant wait to get my hands on the rest of the series now
Aaliyah has been dealing with the Rends (basically she dies, has an out of body experience, and remembers bits of her past) since her escape 6 months ago. She also has some ability related to seeing ghosts and crossing them over. When her friend decides they need to seek the help of a Djinn to figure out what Aaliyah is, everything is shaken up again, and she finds herself with 3 hot vampires. This is a slow burn RH. The guys are interesting, and while they are interested in Aaliyah, they are taking things slowly. They all seem to have some kind of trauma from their pasts. There also seem to be some hidden connections between their pasts. I’m looking forward to seeing them all realize the connections they have :)
I really loved this book and was destroyed when it ended on a cliffhanger, now having to wait for the next one to come out. Aaliyah is the FMC and was written very well she is strong considering what she has endured through her life, yet at the same time she is still flawed and I feel she responds to situations appropriately. The 4 living MLC's all still my heart but tend to let there pasts take over causing anxiety for the FMC. The 5th MLC has to be my favorite and he will tear at your heart strings, he is the FMC's bestfriend and has always been there for her but only as a ghost helping her through everything and you'll want to scream that he takes over someone else's body so he can talk to her. I don't want to say much more so I don't give away any spoilers, but I would highly recommend this book. I recieved a arc copy of this book and the review is my honest take of this book.
For one, the writing is so good you’d never think it’s the author’s first book. But also the characters! They’re swoon-worthy and to melt for. I love every single one of them. The guys all have their own sets of issues, which we’ll learn more about later on, but they still manage to be completely adorable and devoted to the fMC. The fMC has a dark, traumatic past, but is a very resilient character.
It’s slow burn, which I personally love, you really get to know all the guys so well and they all have these cute loving moments with Aaliyah.
I enjoyed this book so much, I’m super impatient for book 2!
K. R. Rainbolt’s first book in her ‘The Ascension Rising’ series is a slow burn that ignites your interest immediately. This is Ms. Rainbolt’s debut novel but it feels like she’s been writing novels for years. The emotions the characters bring out in the storyline is like listening to a musical symphony. The exciting mystery and suspense is so riveting that I couldn’t put the book down until the very last page. This story may or may not end on a cliffhanger but it’s still worth the wait to see where this author takes you next. Highly recommended and definitely a MUST read!
I loved reading this book! It is a slow burn and nothing has happened yet but this book is the first in its series! I cannot wait to read the second book to this series. The author does an amazing job with world building making you feel like you are there in the book. Aaliyah, the main character, is mystery. She keeps dying and one of the best friends is a ghost. She then ends up with three vampires who don’t know why they are drawn to her.
Wow! I loved this debut novel by K.R. Rainbolt. Vampires were my first PNR read so I'm partial to them but also super picky. I loved her world building and character development in this book. It is the first in a series. It kept me turning the pages and reading long after I should have stopped. There was just the right blending of mystery/suspense and emotions that I just couldn't put it down. I'm eagerly awaiting book two!
I always love reading author's debut novels. It always amazes me how well written, and the actual storyline they have written, when they are good like this. This is a slow burn 🔥 that's totally gonna be worth the wait. Sometimes slow burns are a little off putting if they are done properly. This one definitely was done well. Aaliyah is trying to learn who she is. Poor girl has been through so much. I can't wait to see how things go down in the next book.
This is an incredible debut for K.R Rainbolt! This is a slow burn vampire RH romance. The story and storytelling makes the slowburn well worth it. The storytelling and worldbuilding is vivid. This is a book that kept me coming back for more and not wanting to put it down. A lot happens in this first book and it really leaves me wanting more. I can't wait for book 2!
This book is absolutely amazing. I can't say enough about the world building and soul snatching draw of this story. The characters are real and perfectly imperfect, making them that much more relatable. I wait with baited breath for the next book, it absolutely can not come soon enough!
I loved the tension between the main characters, the protective possessiveness of the men, the mystery that is the MFC. I don't want to give any spoilers so you should just pick it up and give it a go!
Liebe alles daran
I'm speechless after war reading this beautiful novel! The word building is absolutely perfect! I can't get over how much I need the second and third books already! 10/10!watch for triggers, but everything was amazing!! Mean cliffhanger, but I'll be patient.
This book is the first in a series by a debut author. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. It’s a slow-burn romance and it’s making me wanting more. The characters are amazing especially the FMC Aaliyah. I loved that each chapter is from the persons POV.
