I'm really enjoying this series! The books give just enough horror vibes to really get my heart pumping and KAK always has the best characters and supporting cast.

💀 SHADOW TENTACLES
💀 Stuffing/ stretching
💀 Will he kill her, or f*ck her?
💀 Seeing and hearing things that aren't there

The return of the R-word.

I'm half kidding. It was only used on 1-2 pages so I'll excuse it this time. I just found it funny the author went back on her word. Anyway! This series is fun, entertaining and addictive. I grew attachment to characters so quick, even the questionable ones, and ones introduced late. For example, Yuriel. Funny skinny non-human cowboys can never go wrong in my opinion. There is still so much unknown about him. I was waiting for more info on his past and never got it. Huh. Maybe in book 3.

Gigi and Patrick stole the show. I never could've predicted???!?! Unlikely pairings are always the most tension filled and angsty. With the plot twist in the end, I'm interested to see how things unroll oof

The whole Venom thing with Rafe was not amusing to me. I want my Rafe back! I do not like this version of him sorry the right and predictable thing would be to make him fight Venom (it doesn't have a name so whatever) and go back to being himself but knowing the author and emma saying she loves both of them (what was that?! emma is crazy so i kinda get it but wut i visibly rolled my eyes at that) i don't think that's happening. Normal Rafe isn't a villainous bloodthirsty character and I liked that he broke the mold let him be!

Emma was dumb and crazy as usual and I kinda ignored her lol The side characters stole her spotlight. All of them are trying to keep her safe. All of them acknowledge she's dumb but still love her? I fail to see what's so special but it makes for fun interactions so I'll bite.

“I’m going to warn you both, I don’t do nothing very well.”
“No shit,” Yuriel said.
“You’re kidding,” Rafe said at the same time.

She is literally the reason why everything went wrong and she graciously reminds us over and over. And she trusted anything that talked. One thing I liked is that she had guts. A bit too much but still.

He could be leading her to the hells themselves and she wouldn’t know the difference.

Rafe and Emma were kinda cute ngl When they were trying to kill each other (guess who succeeded), it was endearing. But the Venom Rafe scene in the end? Distasteful and unnecessary. Bring him back. . .

“I missed you.” He smirked. “Murder notwithstanding.”

One small thing that ticked me the wrong way and may not have been intended to but the only person of colour is an Indian named Robert, if I'm not wrong. He's a street urchin and the people with him are described as cutthroats dwelling in poverty and idk,,, that rubbed me the wrong way. At least he's funny and has a personality I guess.

description

Okay. Please bare with me here.

First off, I really really wanted to like this book. The first book was a bit of a whirlwind and leaves you with more questions than answers. And although that annoyed me, I was willing to be patient and read this book to hopefully have some of those questions answered.

And they are. The author does a good job of answering most of those questions. And that made this book infinitely less frustrating. And as always, her writing is good, and you also have a good sense of who these characters are and how they're feeling. What drives them and what makes them tick.

Emma embarks on an arduous journey to recover her memories. During which, she uncovers secrets that she wasn't able to in the first book. We also read a lot from the perspective of Bishop Patrick and Gigi in this book, which I initially looked forward to and thought would be enjoyable, only to be sadly disappointed and a little annoyed.

But my biggest problem with this book was that it lacked.....structure. This book embodies Emma and her personality to a T. Some readers may like that, but I found myself getting impatient. Instead of Alice in Wonderland, I felt like I was reading Emma in Arnsmouth. This book is a little trippy, with moments that make you question our characters sanity, their dependability as a reliable historian, and their overall mental health. It's story and it's characters bounce from one extreme to another.

And don't get me wrong, I enjoy books that do this. Kathryn Ann Kingsley's Harrow Faire series executes this same concept brilliantly. But the execution in this series just wasn't all there for me. There's something about the story that is, although very appealing, a little weak in coming to fruition. Like It's hard for the author to fully put her ideas or intent across. Like the story was half formed.

Something is just missing. This story and it's characters felt forced to me. Patrick and Gigi for example contributed very little to the actual story, even though we read from their POV a decent bit. The development of their relationship felt both precipitous and haphazard. Hell, the whole story felt a little haphazard. All these characters are a little random, fickle, and just fly by the seat of their pants. For one or two characters to be like this is fine, and actually I expect it from this author. But damn near all of them? I hate to say this, but I just didn't like it.

Also, so much is unclear about the "dark societies" that it makes it hard for me to take them serious as the antagonist of the story. All we know is that they're dangerous and want to bring about the end of the world (Jesus that's such a weak, typical, Disney villain reason for being bad) and that they need Emma and her brother to do it. Apparently because they are twins.

To be completely honest, this doesn't feel like a character or story driven book. It feels like a diversity, agenda driven book. Pushing the awareness of characters that have gender dysphoria, suffer hallucinations, split personalities, question their religion, or question their sanity.

Once again, I'm not saying that this is a bad thing to have in a book. I just feel like it's been shoved down my throat (like Raphe's tentacle's down Emma's) on repeat since the first novel. I get it. Almost all of these characters are fucked in the head to some degree or another. The only normal person in this book is Bishop Patrick.

I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy this book. I found myself skimming, getting bored, and feeling like the inclusion of certain aspects of the story weren't completely necessary. Regardless, that won't prevent me from finishing this series, but I do hope things get better. Even though I have a fairly good idea of what will happen next. 2.5 stars.

I always enjoy Kathryn's books and enjoy her style. Her worlds always feel original and she does villain romance well, in that the guys are totally vallai ous and somewhat irredeemable, but she somehow always makes you root for them, too.

I don't think this series in one of my favourites. I find the world building and characters a bit disparate, really. I also don't get why every character who speaks two words to Emma likes her or finds her adorable or charming. I get pointlessly throwing herself into danger is sort of her thing, but I just want to give her a shake, really.

However, even though this isn't my fa ourjte series by the author, its still a good read I would recommend. I would, for once, like it to be the female MC who's the villain. That would be a nice change of pace. The trouble with it always being the guy the villain and the girl the brave, but clueless human, means that the dynamics in every series are quite similar.

Of Flesh and Bone is the second book in Kathryn Ann Kingsley's occult romance series Tenebris, and picks up right from where the first book ended and boy does it pick up! The stakes feel even higher in this book and the emotions are even more charged.

The romance and steam have their moments in the light, but again, it still doesn't feel like the focus. There are oddly heartwarming moments shared between Rafe and Emma even in the midst of violence and tension, and their relationship feels more well-defined and established by the end of this book, but somehow it is not the most important thing that is happening in the plot. Although that sounds contrary for a romance, in my opinion, this shifting of focus away from the romance actually works for this particular series.

Yet again, the side characters seem more interesting to me than the main characters. Rafe and Emma are interesting characters in their own right and would have stolen the spotlight in any other series or fictional universe. However, with characters like Gigi Gage and Bishop Patrick Caner, the newly introduced Yuriel and Robert, and even the very occasionally appearing Mykel, the main characters have their work cut out to draw the reader's attention. I had already been growing fond o Gigi since the first book, but honestly, she is the one I am rooting for the most after reading this current one.

The sense of tragedy in this book is slow to build and unfolds over the course of the plot. As devastating as the conclusion of the first book was, the way the second book ended, though delivering the blows more slowly and in stages, feels even more heartbreaking somehow. I am really hoping for a better turn of events for the characters in the next book.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I've been anxiously awaiting the second installment in the Tenebris series, and wow did Kathryn Ann Kingsley deliver!

It picks up right where we left off in book one with Emma returning to Arnsmouth after losing her memories. Rafe is determined to kill her, as much as it pains him to do so.

I was thrilled to see the return of characters, like Gigi (my favorite!) and Bishop Patrick, and to be introduced to new ones, like the evil doctor and Yuriel. Emma and Rafe's relationship develops in...let's say...a unique and very satisfying way. Same goes for Rafe and his consentacles ;) We also finally find out what happened to Emma's twin, Elliot, and I am eagerly awaiting book three to explore that twist more.

A boxer turned priest and a man turned woman. A man with monster appendages and a girl turned on by fear. Cults that worship an unknown power and mental asylums run by lunatics.

All in one series.

Not sure if this author was sent from heaven or hell 😭

Mediocre at best

As with the first book in this trilogy, I feel kind of perplexed about how to rate it. I'm going with three stars, a solid middle, because I like the characters & because there is so much potential here. The writing is relatively solid, too. But I feel like the author has taken these interesting characters & kind of plopped them down in a story with no real propulsion to it. I just don't feel like it's going anywhere. I find myself skimming over huge passages because it's just not entertaining or interesting enough for me to continue. This is the end of book 2 & all that has happened is Emma & Rafe hooked up, Emma lost her identity, got it back, looked for her brother, found what was left of him... & that's all. It's just not meshing for me. Maybe it's somebody else's bag, maybe there is someone out there who'd really enjoy it. But not me. And I think the number one reason for my lack of enjoyment isn't even the lackluster plot, but the lack of context & worldbuilding. The author has created this intriguing sounding mythology involving a number of dark secret societies & a "Church of the Benevolent God" that works against them. But she gives us nothing but vague details. No descriptions of what each of these 6 societies does. No details about the church or about the Beast that it is fighting against. There is just no life to the story. For that reason, despite a bit of curiosity about what will happen to the characters-- one character in particular, who was left in a really bad spot-- I am not going to continue reading the third book. I have waaaaay too many other books on my TBR to waste any time reading something that I feel so ambivalent about. I might try something else by this character at a later time, seeing as she has a number of other titles that sound interesting, & the writing style was decent. But my bottom line is that's this series isn't worth the time it will take me to complete it.

I don’t know how many ways that I can say that I devoured this book! When I found out it was being delivered early by Amazon I found myself tracking it every step of the way until it was delivered.

I quickly read through the first book to prepare myself for the sinful delight this book is. You quickly find yourself where the first one ended, with a dozen questions and a desire to see Emma return herself to being whole again. New characters are introduced and fleshed out in this dark world and I found myself adoring each of them, and finding new love for ones that were expanded like the good Bishop and Gigi! Some of the questions that were left crawling in my mind when I finished the first one finally got answered, but then a dozen more took their place as new players enter the field.

Without giving too much away I want to say that once Emma and Rafe are returned to each other is like coming home after long vacation, even if that vacation is spending the last six months trying to find scraps of yourself. Plus the new changes to some of our main love interest and increased hunger he has for her? Chefs kiss!

Kathryn Ann Kingsley has quickly become one of my favorite writers as each world she creates is fleshed out, visually appealing, and with characters worth devoting your time to!

Now all that remains is to wait on baited breath for book three and prey to the Benevolent God (or the Great Beast) that it ends up at my door early again.

I have mild spoilers in my reveiw... so be warned

You have been warned!
I must say this book is amazing… I'm just speechless…

But here is my attempt at writing a review of this phenomenally dark, beautiful masterpiece of an occult HORROR ROMANCE book.

Rafe. He.. they are amazing. I love what he is turning int… they are turning into. They are peeerfect. Those scenes... (if you know, you know😏) so hot!

I don't know if Yuriel or the new relationship building in this book are my new favorite additions. And Gigi… don't hurt my amazing Gigi. I don't like that doctor at all…

There is something to be said for voilent people... Emma! Rafe! I'm looking at you two rigtig now!

The author shouldn't be surprised if a beating, bleeding heart shows up in her mailbooks. Kat really knows how to make one fall in love with her characters, I must say. Emma is one of my new loves… and Rafe and Yuriel and Gigi and and and… yes all of them.

Thanks, Kat for writing amazing books

💝🖤 here is my heat… guess witch it is🤫

3☆. spoilers ahead.

I don't really know what it is about this series that keeping me interested because it isn't really anything to do with the romance or the plot. I still feel like these elements of the story are vastly underdeveloped and leave me more confused than anything, though I do feel more connected with this world after having read this novel than I felt after the first installment. I think the true positive about this series is the atmosphere. Whether its the horror aspects, the somewhat minimal lore, or Rafe himself, there are plenty of pieces throughout this installment that sufficiently creeped me out. I'm not necessarily rooting for the characters--though there are definitely things that intrigue me, like the truth behind Elliot's death--and the plot hasn't exactly gripped me, but the vibe that exists when you read about each of these people and what they're doing is quite engaging somehow. Enough for me to finish the series at least, even if the only reason I'm doing so is to see what other eldritch horrors I come across.

Of Flesh & Bone was so good! I loved getting more background on the characters and seeing some more of the character development. I have been so drawn in to this storyline, I just find it super interesting, and I'm also allll about that spice as well 🥵 I also love that there is so much mystery and action as well. I absolutely love Emma's wit and the fact that she's not afraid to duke it out with Rafe. Also, on the topic of Rafe, holy crap that ending! I am SO ready to see how his character develops in the next book! I am also so very curious about Yuriel and what is going to happen with him.

Ever since reading Kathryn's books, I have NEVER ONCE been let down, and I was amazed by Of Flesh & Bone!
If you haven't read Of Visions & Secrets you are sorely missing out and need to go read it, and then read this bad boy!

At least the memory loss bit was resolved quite quickly and it did make sense in the context of the plot!

Emma was less “herself” in this book which is why I didn’t enjoy it AS much however it made sense for her not to be given the trauma. Although her knocking Rafe round the head with a fire poker at the end was iconic. (He deserved it)

Gigi is amazing and I love her and want to read a whole series just for her.

I’m still pretty sure the great beast is an “ancient” from other series although Yuriels demon/angel thing did make me question that a lil but but I still think my theory is sound.

Now I’m just really curious to finally learn about the final society, the key

Of Flesh, Bone, Ichor & Aether

This is the second book in this series & it certainly didn’t disappoint. MOF, the ante is stacked & this is one strange, rollercoaster ride of a deck! Emma & Rafe’s story continues & it’s disconcerting on several levels. They’re stuck in crazy town with no rest stops or exits in sight! Emma finds out what happened to her twin & made a friend in GiGi Gage, as well as the Bishop. An apocalypse or smack down is imminent or both…If you like the first one, you gotta read this book to flesh (tongue in cheek) out the story.

While I really vibed with the first book in this series, this one felt like a bit of filler. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have a great time! Kat really excels at introducing fun and intriguing characters, so I absolutely loved the addition of Yuriel and his entrance was my favorite part of the book. Also, Gigi and Patrick?? Hell yeah.
I am so curious to see where the rest of the series goes - the cliffhanger on this one is a doozy.

THAT CLIFF HANGER

I loved this book as much as the first. The cliff hanger has me foaming at the mouth for more. Honestly, I’m really hoping Emma accepts ALL of Rafe (IYKYK). I can’t wait for the third book. I was reading and was so into it and all of a sudden it was over. I was so hooked that I didn’t even realize I had read it all! Also I love Yuriel so much and Gigi has grown on me tenfold! I care about all the characters and not just the main ones and I just love when I get attached to everyone in a book.

That cliffhanger was cruel. I’m team Gigi and the Bishop now and I NEED more.

The beginning of this book was a bit slow but it got progressively more exciting and complex and I’m so intrigued now. Also, Rafe is a bit of a psychopath, which I wasn’t expecting but I’m here to see how this will play out.

I do wish we got to understand more about what exactly the dark societies and planning and how they plan to do this, and why are Emma and Elliot so important? That part is still a little lost to me. I’m hoping book 3 drops more explanation!

Of Flesh & Bone

This was the second book in a strange romantic series that has been interesting enough to to keep my attention. Strange creature of darkness and cults surrounding it centering on a set of twins that are interesting to the cults. It's a love story between a Man/Evolved with a monster and a girl. Can't wait for the third part of this funny, romantic, scary series.

Book 2 came out swinging. Emma serves up some well deserved come uppance on poor Rafe and I'm here for it. I think Rafe fell even harder for our spunky Emma inspite of her evening the hits. I loved how Kat wrote these characters, they are flawed and witty and oh so endearing. I absolutely consumed this book in a single serving. Good thing books are 0 calories as this delight would have been most decadent. Hope you enjoy!

Kingsley writes books that I’ve been looking for, forever. It’s dark villain gets the girl without all the MC back and forth theatrics. (Usually bc the MC is just as twisted inside). I usually love the characters she imagines which gets me over some plot holes that I wouldn’t be able to with other books. I would love to see a 400+ book with world building, enemies to lover, slow burn, villain gets the girl from her. I think it would be incredible.

The plot line is really good but it takes a lot to understand all the parts. What does each dark society want? And why Emma?

Emma and Rafe’s relationship is becoming a roller coaster. They said they love each other but they keep trying to kill each other.

I will say the scene with Gigi and the Bishop….🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
