Sequel to the Mumsnet recommended best Summer read, Losers Club.
Oh dearie me, the remote Scottish island of Vik is overrun with treasure hunters, Hollywood has arrived to film the next big blockbuster and Mrs Hubbard has accidentally poisoned Police Scotland. What a stramash!
When Colin the curator is found bludgeoned to death in the museum, it’s down to the island weight-loss group, Losers Club, to investigate. Following in the footsteps of Colin, the Losers Club friends find themselves hunting a lost Jacobite treasure and unravelling an international conspiracy. Who are the mysterious secret keepers, who killed Colin and what terrible, terrible thing has Gordon done?
As a child, I loved reading. I spent my life with my nose in a book and, when finally forced back into the real world, I wrote poetry and stories. My hero was Pam Ayres and all I wanted to be when I grew up was a librarian, so that I could be around books all the time.
Of course, life takes you on different paths. Somehow, writing poems and stories got lost along the way. I was too busy partying in London through my twenties then being a mum through my thirties and forties. But on an August morning in 2018, at the tender age of forty-eight, I decided to create a blog on Facebook. Ten minutes later, Growing Old Disgracefully was born and the love of writing came flooding back. Encouraged by my lovely readers, I finally got off my lazy behind, put fingers to keyboard and wrote my first book, The Big Blue Jobbie, then another, and another.
Once more, I have a head full of stories and I can’t wait to tell them to you.
The second book in The Losers Club series. The characters are back, led by Penny Moon. It's very funny, with well developed different characters with a bit of mystery and love story thrown in. Set in Vik, and Island off Scotland the island being a character of its own. A delightful, funny second book in the series. I'm sure I'll read more at some point. A.great funny who dunnit.
The Lairds Ladle is the second in the Losers Club mystery books. Just as entertaining as the first one. We get to learn more of the losers in this one. It’s another riotous laugh out loud read. With characters that are relatable and as quirky as you expect from a small close knit community. The added pressure of a film set on the island and the police down with food poisoning it is once again the losers club that endeavour to solve another mystery
I love stories like this.. calm- ish. And fun.. not so much shooting and car chases. But still a mystery to deal with. And fun characters.. good characters are what makes a good story.
I love these books! So very clever! There were so many times that I just laughed myself silly over the banter of these outrageous characters. The mysteries are quite good too. Always a surprise and devilishly clever! What a perfect antidote to stress. I can't wait for more 😆
Máme tady další díl dobrodružné detektivní zápletky ze skotského ostrova Vik.
Pokud si pamatujete klub shazovačů (kil), kteří namísto toho, aby dietovali a cvičili, strkají svoje nosy, kde nemají.
Jim sebou bere Penny. Ti dva zabalí Colina do folie, a protože nemají kde jinde ho dát, ostrovní márnice je plná, strčí ho do zmrzlinářského auta.
I don't remember why I started this series, except that perhaps it was due needing to fill a Y spot in a challenge. I do remember feeling rather ambivalent about it, and that holds true for this book as well.
Penny, the apparent MC, and her friends all annoyed me with their silliness and ineptitude. Who in their right mind would And who would even think that was a good idea?!? Even though there was plenty of story left after that, I simply could not get that out of my head.
The mystery itself was twisty with almost too many red herrings thrown in, and I was not able to identify the killer or the motive before it was revealed in the book. That alone prevented a 2-star (or less!) rating for this book. I'll keep the series on my "maybe I'll read this" shelf, simply because I'll always need Y authors, but I will certainly lower my expectations before reading the next book.
A laugh out loud book with a fantastic story line.
I listened to this book, and book 2 in 1.5 days. The characters were unique with individual quirks that makes their interaction with each other even funnier to me. The plot of each story was not something that I could see coming but when it played out it all made sense.
I can’t wait for the next Audiobook installment to be released. I don’t have time to read from the actual book so rely on Audible. But honestly, the accent of the narrator gives the story more authenticity for me as I have never been to Scotland and wouldn’t have been able to hear the dialect in my own mind.
Well done Yvonne Vincent, well done. I’ll be promoting these books any chance I get with my fellow readers.
If you read the first book and then expected this one to be any different then your wrong, this one is much more funny because if like me you can picture the characters then this helps you read this book much better. The gang are there but even funnier as well as the story line go's along at a great pace to keep you page turning after each chapter, believe me as I took two sessions to read this book. Now for number 3 " The Angel's Share " which I will start tomorrow to give my eyes a rest after reading he first two book's in this series in just over 5 days. If you wonder why it's because I've had Cataract Operation on both eyes so no book reading for a few months.
We start in 1746, Scotland. A lost treasure of gold, and a mysterious murder. Today, on the island of Vik a major movie is being filmed. The locals get swept up in the glamour of show biz. Soon there is another murder to be solved. And in the midst of this, a food poisoning episode, blamed on the local ice cream. The Losers Club come together to solve the mystery.
Twists, turns and intrigue. Another cosy mystery to enjoy with quirky collection of characters.
I loved the first book of the series, so I was looking forward to the second one. In between, I'd read a couple of other books so I was lost when I started this one. The author didn't reintroduce the characters and there are a lot of them, so I was confused as to who everyone was. It was supposed to be humorous, but it was just silly. There seemed to be very little focus on the mysteries in the story.
The mystery was interesting and characters are well created, but the use of the f word is distracting and not used in appropriate circumstances, just flung about for some unknown reason. Also, the humorous thoughts in the middle of dramatic events doesn’t make any sense.
A surprise twist at the end. A little surprised the DCI took all the credit for solving the case. Although it probably isn't a good idea to be known as a crime investigator. Too much notoriety can be bad. This colorful cast of characters are so fun. Penny and Jim are getting closer. Their bickering and inside jokes are great. A fun series to read
I loved going back to Vik and revisiting all of the brilliant characters from the first book..plus a few more. Another great story where the Losers Club attempt to solve some mysteries. I'm looking forward to the third book, thanks once again Yvonne 'Growing Old Disgracefully ' Vincent 5*
I’m really enjoying this series so far. Loving getting to know the characters and their personalities. I’ve chuckled so many times while reading this book, Yvonne has a great way with words and expressions. Can’t wait to see what book 3 has in store.
This series probably reads well, but it's so entertaining to listen to it read with a Scottish accent that I can't imagine that reading it would be nearly as entertaining! When the curator of the local museum is found dead in the museum, the Loser's Club investigates the crime. You probably will want to listen to the first one just to get an idea of the characters.
I am liking the characters in this series so I just ordered book 3. This book had the Losers Club trying to solve the murder of a museum curator and involved the history of hidden treasure on the island of Vik. It looks like Jim and Penny are going to get together. They are funny, caustic, and fit well together.
This is a great sequel to the first book with very likable characters and enough twists and turns to keep you hooked without getting confused. Highly recommended
A good read and funny too. We have a murder mystery and no I didn't work out who it was. Great cast of characters in this book, they are unique and I can't wait to read what they get up to in the third book which is already on my list.
Another great book concerning the Island of Vik and the losers club, a murder mystery with lots of humour and many twists in the story. Stuck in the house with the bad weather, then cheer yourself up and read the Laird's ladle.
A body was found in the Vik museum, bashed on the head and then his face smashed in. With the local police force undermanned, due to a food poisoning outbreak the local vet is asked to secure the murder scene and the body. The Loser's Club start to investigate until the police can take over.
This is book 2 in the series " A Loser's Club Murder Mystery". Yvonne Vincent has paired the right amount of mystery with fun humor. Although the humor at some points becomes a tad silly it is well done and makes for a good cozy mystery.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It would make you laugh and sad. The characters soon become people who you want to continue to read about.looking forward to reading about their next adventure.
Fun story. Loved the Scottish verbage. Characters are well formed. A little bit "racy". Definitely not for the prudish. I am enjoying every book. Keep them coming.
Another great story, keeps you guessing until the end. The usual humour and fab characters with their own secrets shared in this one. Looking forward to the next book.
Highly amusing. Well worth a read if you have a juvenile sense of humour as I do. Read the book (this is the second in a series and it helps to have read the previous one although not completely necessary) not so much for the plot but for the characters.
The follow up to Losers Club just as clever a story and equally as hilarious. To say it is laugh out loud funny is an understatement. Yvonne Vincent is my new favourite author. On now to the next in the series.
I love these books . Yvonne Vincent characters are well established. A funny murder mystery series , I enjoyed the second book greatly and felt I knew the characters even better . I'm looking forward to reading the next installment .
Hilarious cast of characters interact to try and solve local crimes, but their lack of proper procedure makes them believable. Many twists and turns in a story spanning centuries. Highly recommend this for laugh out loud fun!
I found this author by chance ( good old Facebook ) and I just love the story’s . They are unique and full of laughs .. cheer yourself up by reading them
