When Nikki Knight returns to her childhood stomping grounds in Frog Hollow Georgia, she realizes life has become nuttier than the pecan muffins at her late grandmother’s haunted B&B. But the only ghost in the Moonlight Mansion is the previous lady of the house, still roaming the halls in her afterlife.
Not ten steps into town, Nikki finds herself with a furry new companion. An abandoned royal dachshund who just might carry the secret to his past owner’s untimely demise. But when Nikki is seen snooping around at one too many crime scenes, the local officer becomes suspicious and begins popping up where she least expects him.
Now, she needs to find out what happened ASAP and protect Prince Dasher Dangerdog Bean from falling into the wrong—and deadly—hands.
Can Nikki and her royal dachshund solve the case? Or will they end up roaming the Moonlight Mansion with her grandmother?
Scents and a Suspect is the first book in the The Accidental Ghost Detective Agency. We meet Nikii who is returning to Frog Hollow, Georgia after her grandmother has been murdered. She stumbles upon a dashound who turns out to be her familiar. She can also see her grandmother's ghost.
I absolutely LOVED this book. This is a fantastic book in a new series. I LOVED the characters and the mystery.
In this first book of the The Accidental Ghost Detective Agency, we start off with Nikki retuning to Moonlight Mansion in Frog Hollow, Georgia shortly after her grandmother has been murdered. Before even arriving to the mansion she finds a dachshund abandoned at a gas station. Nikki decides to take him home with her to find out who he belongs to but it isn't long before she discovers that Prince Dasher Dangerdog Bean is not only speaking to her but she can actually hear him! A short time later she learns that not only can she communicate with the dog but also with the ghost of her dead grandmother, Audrey, who wishes that they can be partners and detectives solving the crimes in their small town.
This was a really fun story leaving the reader guessing at every step of the way. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a lover of dogs as well as mysteries..

I know there’s nothing realistic about talking pets, but there’s just something so incredibly fun about the idea. Dash reminds me of the publisher’s other famous blue-blooded non-human animal companion: Octo-Cat. Though, not quite to the same level of snobbery. (To be honest, I’m not sure if it’s possible for any other creature to attain the same level of snobbery as that crabby tabby.) Nikki was an entertaining character to follow. She’s landed in a situation that I think would give all of us pause, but she tackles it with humor and mostly good grace. It looks like there’re some family secrets that we get to dig into in future stories, so I can’t wait to get my hands on them to find out. I received a complimentary copy of this book through Booksprout.
I’ll start off with a quote, from Nikki, the main character: “It was barely noon, and my welcome to Moonlight Mansion should have been a relaxing, food-filled day. But no. Here I was with a ghost, a talking dog, and a murder investigation.”
The writing style is good, it’s well written. I loved grandma Audrey the ghost! And I also loved Dash the Dachshund (full name Prince Dasher Dangerdog Bean), whom Nikki can talk to! Of course, treats and food are on his mind a lot, LOL. He acts like Nikki is his servant. I also loved Birdie, she’s a clever lady! As I read on, the book got better and better. Intriguing and suspenseful.
Scents and a Suspect begins The Accidental Ghost Detective series with a funny, charming, and dangerous tale of ghosts, talking dogs, and murder most foul. Just my kind of Paranormal Cozy Mystery. This is the first time I recall reading this author’s work, and I’ll definitely be following this series and checking out her backlists.
Nikki is returning to Frog Hollow, Georgia to run her recently deceased grandmother’s Bed and Breakfast. On her way into town, she finds an abandoned dachshund at the gas station… and her journey into the unusual begins when it seems like the dog is actually talking to her.
When there is a mystery involved I won’t go into many details about a story – but I can say that I had an absolute blast with Scents and a Suspect from start to finish. The characters leap off of the page in various degrees of evil, heartwarming, devious, funny, or just plain stupid. Dash, our demanding, royal pain in the behind dachshund is adorable, wise, and oh so confident that he is always right and that a treat not given upon demand is a good reason to go into a temper tantrum. He’s also very good at giving clues and directions for humans to follow.
There are twists in the story that I didn’t see coming. And I changed my suspects as the story continued – not saying if I was right or not but what a journey to get to the actual bad guy.
I had fun here. The story is solid, the clues not always obvious, the characters believable (for the most part), and the action is intense where needed. I loved Nikki and Dash, along with their friends as they solved this crime, and I’ll be watching for the next title this fall. If you love Paranormal Cozy Mysteries, animals, and shenanigans… then Scents and a Suspect is perfect for you.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the author or author’s team via Booksprout. The opinions expressed in this review are my own – good, bad, or indifferent. I was not financially compensated for this review and no expectation of a positive review was promised.*
This is a fun quirky book with a talking dog, a ghost and a mystery to solve. I enjoyed the story with its fun characters, I would actually be hard pressed to say which character I liked best. Although the dog Dash with his enthusiasm would be near the top. I also love how he referred to each person as a type of dog or animal, this meant it was so easy to imagine there personalities as the author intended. The mystery was good and I liked the questioning technique, especially the one that took place in the hospital. The ghost added a fun element to investigating. There wasn't a great deal of suspects but it's a good start to a new series. After the murder of her Grandmother, Nikki returns home to Moonlight Mansion to run the B&B. Before she arrives she makes a stop and discovers an abandon dog that soon has her world spinning. The dog choose her and as a consequence she is the only one who can talk to him but that isn't the only one talking though. Her dead grandmother in the form of a ghost is also talking to her. In fact thinking the Nikki will get board running the B&B she wants the two of them to become detectives and is ready with her first case. Dash has other ideas, he wants his stuff and Nikki is soon returning to the rest stop to find his owner. The problem is she discovers more than she bargained for when with Dash's help they find his body and in doing so become the police's number one suspect. The man had just brought Dash from the animal shelter and the clues point to somebody there being involved. but who? And can Nikki find the real killer before she gets arrested? I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Oh this little dachsie completely stole my heart! Sweet little Dash was abandoned by a guy who ended up murdered, and Nikki's good heart of rescuing him from where she saw him sure led to the lion's share of trouble for her, although she got a lion's share of love from Dash. But hey, how cool was it to find out her grandma was still there at the mansion? I think I'd take a friendly ghost of a grandma over never being able to see her again. It's hilarious that she wanted to be a detective, but being a ghost definitely had its advantages! It turned out Audrey's suspicions about some illegal things going on were spot on.
Audrey seemed like she'd have been coolest grandma ever, dead or alive. Birdie was such an awesome character too, and I did like Lacey who Nikki thought was always a big boyfriend stealer, but she seemed oblivious to having done that. Hearing her tell her reason was pretty funny! However Nikki thought she was in school, she was definitely changed and right on board to go sleuthing with the others. It's too bad only Birdie and Nikki can see Audrey though!
Dash had a sweetheart named Honey at the shelter, so two dogs ended up getting a forever home after the perp was caught. That little guy cracked me up and makes me wonder if the author has dachsies in her family because she's really nailed their personality! My dachshund does so much of what Dash was doing and boy, if she could talk she'd be telling me the very same things he told Nikki. I can't wait for the next book! Yep, having a dachshund being part of the story pulled me into the series, but I'm staying for him and the other characters!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the author via BookSprout, and my opinions are my own.
Nikki Knight’s grandmother died, so Nikki has come back to Frog Hollow to accept her inheritance and move into the Midnight Mansion B&B her grandmother left to her. On the way, she stopped for gas and noticed a dachshund who appeared abandoned. She took him home, figuring she would try to find his owner, although his past owner turns out to be deceased.
Many disconcerting things occur. She finds her grandmother Audrey is now a ghost. The dog, whose full name is Prince Dasher Dangerdog Bean (“Dash”), can talk with her! And as they look for Dash’s former owner, Vernon, Dash finds his body under a blanket and he has definitely been murdered. She also meets an unpleasant police officer who becomes suspicious of her as she shows up at several crime scenes. With the help of her grandmother's ghost and Dash, can Nikki find Vernon’s murderer and keep herself out of trouble?
I enjoyed this cozy that kept my interest while at the same time introducing me to a large number of characters. This is going to be a fun series to follow with Nikki’s unusual team.
SCENTS AND A SUSPECT is the first installment in the Accidental Ghost Detective Agency series by EMMIE LYN. This book was my introduction to the author and I'm looking forward to more. I found her writing to have great characters, like an entitled dog and bossy ghost.
Nikki Knight returned to her childhood home in Frog Hollow Georgia, to collect her inheritance. As she stops for gas before entering the town she finds an abandoned dachshund. She picks him up and takes him with her - planning to find his owner later.
Things quickly turn nuttier than pecan muffins: grandmother isn't "gone" she's a ghost, the dogs name is Prince Dasher Dangerdog Bean and his most recent owner is dead. GREAT, nothing like a slow relaxing rest at the old homestead.
If you like dogs with sass and attitude, murder and ghost mysteries this book is for you.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Nikki Knight has just returned to Frog Hollow, Georgia after inheriting her grandmother's B&B. She doesn't expect to find a cute but bossy dachshund named Prince Dasher Dangerdog Bean on her way to Moonlight Mansion. And, she certainly doesn't expect to be able to talk to him!
She soon learns that her grandmother, Audrey, is still very much in residence as a ghost and has decided to start a detective agency with Nikki's help. Just a few hours after Nikki's arrival, she and Dash, along with Audrey and friend Birdie, discover a body. And it's none other than a man named Vernon, who adopted Dash and then abandoned him!
This was a fun and wildly entertaining cozy mystery, full of humor, engaging characters and an adorable talking dachshund. If you enjoy reading this type of book, you won't be disappointed. I look forward to reading more adventures featuring Nikki, Dash, and friends.
I was given the opportunity to read this book through Booksprouts and chose to review it.
Nikki Knight returns to Frog Hollow, Georgia when she inherits her grandmother's B&B, Moonlight Mansion. She's barely in town when she finds an abandoned royal dachshund named Dash, then she discovers her grandmother is a ghost. When circumstances have her at too many crime scenes and a local police officer starts looking at her, Nikki and her grandmother's ghost start investigating themselves along with some help from Dash.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest, unbiased review. This is the first book in a new series and I really enjoyed it. It's a quick, fun read with some quirky characters, and I was drawn into the captivating read from the beginning. The mystery was a good one and I loved how Nikki and her grandmother solved it. I'm looking forward to the next book and highly recommend this one.
Nikki Knights returns to Frog Hollow when she inherits the family Moonlight Mansion, left to her by her recently murdered grandmother. And lo and behold, her grandmother now resides there as a ghost and has decided that she and Nikki are going to become detectives together, with grandmother Audrey being the unseen eavesdropper and lookout! Add to this a snarky, royal dachshund Nikki finds abandoned at a gas station, who talks to her, and you have the makings of a great and often funny cozy. Trying to figure out what the bad guys are up to keeps them busy. Then there’s the handsome grandson of Officer Brooksby; and whose side is he on anyway. I received a free copy of this book from author Emile Lyn and write this review voluntarily.
Lots to like in this cozy mystery. There’s a talking dachshund, a beautiful old house inherited by a smart, sassy, and likable young woman, baddies murdered offstage, and an old family feud to spice things up and raise the stakes. Nikki is the young woman in question, and she is aided by Dash, the talking dachshund (who only speaks to her) and the ghost of her grandmother, the one who bequeathed the house to her. Audrey, the late grandmother is the one who is keen to form an investigative agency with Nikki, since she’s invisible to most people so can gather lots of info. This mystery wasn’t the smoothest narrative, but now that the base is established, I think subsequent books will be even more interesting.
Nikki has returned to Frog Hollow Georgia when she inherits her grandmother’s house after she was murdered. Minutes after arriving in town, Nikki finds an abandoned dachshund that she takes home with her in hopes of reuniting it to it’s owner. Nothing surprises her more than discovering that her grandmother is now a ghost and the dachshund can communicate with her! And, so, begins this wonderful adventure! Part cozy ghost story, part cozy murder mystery, and full of laughs. Very well written with lots of colorful characters. I loved this book and can’t wait for the next one to come out!
The cute puppy sold me on giving this book a try n I was not disappointed. The characters human, ghost, n furry are fabulous. It’s so nice to finally read a book where the heroine saved the day with the help of her friends and not saved by some hot guy that couldn’t live without her. I read the first book in one day n can hardly wait to start #2. If you really want to snuggle up in a cozy corner with tea or cocoa n just have a wonderful warm hearted read I suggest you give this a try🤗🤗🤗
Scents and a Suspect is an awesome beginning of a new series. I enjoyed meeting Nikki and her grandmother, but Prince Dash just might be my favorite character! Grandma was murdered but that is not the case this well written book sets out to solve. With grandma's and Dash's help, Nikki soon find herself a suspect in a murder. Can this trio solve the case before Dash falls into the wrong hands and/or Nikki becomes a victim? Get in on the action by reading this today!
This is a delightful and quacky story of Nikki Knight inheriting her grandmother's Moonlight Manion. Her grandmother, Audrey, was murdered and comes back as a ghost. Miss Birdie Bell Long is the caretaker and cook. Nikki finds a dog ,Dash, in the middle of the road. She talks to him and he talks back. She tries to find the dogs owner. Her grandmother wants to solve a crime with the help of Nikki. I received an ARC of this book and I recommend reading it.
No a bad start, but nothing worth writing home about. The plucky girl/ animal mystery story is nothing new, A certain post mistress and her cats and dog come to mind, and I've read worse, but I am happy that my KU account kept me from spending money on it. For what its worth if you're looking for a good mystery, you should pick up the "Lady Hardcastle" books. No animals, but she has a maid with interesting skills with a knife.
Nikki returns home to Frog Hollow, Georgia, rescues a dachshund named Prince Dasher Dangerdog Bean, who is able to communicate with Nikki, and considers starting an investigation agency with her dead grandmother! Emory Lyn is a master of fun mysteries that combine quirky characters and dangerous situations.
I loved this book because it has a Dachshund. We used to own 2 long-haired ones. They are such a loveable breed. It's funny that this dog talks & is very helpful in solving the murder. Nikki's ghost grandmother is also funny & very helpful. The ending was a surprise. I look forward to the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout & am voluntarily leaving a review.
I feel that if you like ghosts, talking dogs and small town detectives you will enjoy this story. I loved Dash and Nikki. This is whimsical. I felt this was a great start to a new series. This is a very easy read. I received a copy of this book from Booksprout for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.
A little bit of paranormal and a lot of mystery ties this story into a terrific package. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I love just about everything I have read by Emmie Lyn. I think she puts all of the little touches into her tales that make them sheer perfection.
I wouldn't say this story is super exciting but it's a good start. It does a great job of building the town and the characters plus it's cozy and fluffy.
I really enjoyed that Nikki was able to work with all the women in her life, as well as Dash, instead of waiting for a man to step in and rescue her.
Not too short, not too long of a read. Loved getting to know Nikki in Frog Hollow along with the awesome Birdie, Lacey, Grandma Audrey, Tatoo guy, Officer/Grandpa Bud, Will and of course Dashing Dash! Join in and read their little mystery.
Loved this book. First in the series and off to great start. I was a little confused at the beginning but then I figured out all the "voices" and kept reading. It was a page turner for sure. Well written and kept me guessing until the end.
When a book is based on a grandmother’s death and reappearance as a ghost, can one say it is a fun start to a series? Well, I’m going to say it. We have a ghost and a talking dachshund. Emmie Lyn manages to give us humor, a touch of romance, mystery and a few twists. So much fun.
I’m already in love with this series, and it’s only the first book! Dash is hilarious. I cannot get enough of that dog! I can’t wait for the next adventure Nikki, Dash, Birdie and Audrey go on!
No mystery here, this book had me at page one. The Dashund Dash is adorable and funny. Fits my Dashund Doxie to a T. I can't wait to read the series now. I know that'll I love them.
I loved this book so much, I can't wait to read the next one. Interesting people involved, a goid story line and surprising ending. I read it in one day into the night.
