Maruo graduated from junior high school in March 1972 but dropped out of senior high school. At the age of 15 he moved to Tokyo and began working for a bookbinder. At 17, he made his first manga submission to Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it was considered by the editors to be too graphic for the magazine's format and was subsequently rejected. Maruo temporarily removed himself from manga until November 1980 when he made his official debut as a manga artist in Ribon no Kishi (リボンの騎士) at the age of 24. It was at this stage that the young artist was finally able to pursue his artistic vision without such stringent restrictions over the visual content of his work. Two years later, his first stand-alone anthology, Barairo no Kaibutsu (薔薇色の怪物; Rose Colored Monster) was published.
Maruo was a frequent contributor to the legendary underground manga magazine Garo (ガロ).
Like many manga artists, Maruo sometimes makes cameo appearances in his own stories. When photographed, he seldom appears without his trademark sunglasses.
Though most prominently known for his work as a manga artist, Maruo has also produced illustrations for concert posters, CD Jackets, magazines, novels, and various other media. Some of his characters have been made into figures as well.
Though relatively few of Maruo's manga have been published outside of Japan, his work enjoys a cult following abroad.
His book Shōjo Tsubaki (aka Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show) has been adapted into an animated film (Midori) by Hiroshi Harada with a soundtrack by J.A. Seazer, but it has received very little release.

Not my cup of tea.
Recopilación de historias cortas y experimentales del maestro del ero-guro Suehiro Maruo publicadas originalmente en 1985. Una sucesión de relatos, sin conexión aparente más allá de alguna temática, que revela la inquietante perversidad en la mente del mangaka. Cada historia es aterradora, asquerosa, difícilmente comprensible, grotesca y muy, pero que muy turbia.
Violencia y sexo se mueven como pez en el agua por dos temáticas: la II guerra mundial y la tecnología. De cada una de ellas, al menos, he conseguido disfrutar un poco de una historia. La hormiga eléctrica falsa, una especie de extraña Blade Runner con toques de Inuyashiki. La otra, El planeta de los japos, una ucronía de Maruo donde Japón derrota a USA.
Surrealismo, alegorías, metáforas y onirismo se entremezclan una y otra vez en una serie de historias que no he conseguido comprender. Lo dicho al principio, not my cup of tea, pero hay que probar de todo en esta vida.

No, no soy lo peor y he tardado meses en leerme esto. Soy lo peor porque en cuanto empecé la primera historia y vi que en cada una hacía una recomendación sobre cuál es la música perfecta para escuchar mientras se lee cada historia… lo quise hacer bien y en casa. Nunca encontraba el momento y lo fui dejando, y así hasta que me puse la semana pasada.
Tonterías personales aparte, a alguien como yo ese detalle de la música le ha parecido una maravilla, sobre todo porque viene de alguien que ya me consta que es un melómano empedernido con una cultura musical clásica y moderna descomunal. Realmente eran músicas que casaban a la perfección con cada capítulo. No creo que sea casualidad eso que se dice en sus biografías sobre que la primera vez que estuvo en la cárcel fue por robar discos de Pink Floyd.
Esta recopilación de historias cortas publicada en 1985 funciona como otro soplo de aire fresco a lo que hace actualmente Maruo. También fascinante e interesante, últimamente le mangaka se ha centrado en cosas más sutiles y sobrias, pero Paranoia Star contiene un grupo de historias que retuercen el dibujo, la mente y la historia, muy inspiradas, turbias, oscuras y metafóricas. En mi opinión de sus mejores trabajos. Además están salpicadas con un par de textos un tanto perturbadores que todavía no sé cómo tomarme.
Ojalá se sigan recuperando en España estos primeros trabajos del maestro Maruo.

Ero-guro or Edgelord: The Manga? YOU DECIDE!
That, in essence, covers the realm in which Suehiro Maruo works. His stock-in-trade is beautiful violence and sexualised despair, presented in a manner that borrows from older German and Japanese art. He presents abhorrent content in a lovingly-rendered format that would, in the hands of a lesser-skilled artist, be probably considered little more than pornography.
The problem with creating this kind of work is that the line between meaningful examination of things little spoken-of and shameless DOES THIS GROSS YOU OUT MAN? wankboy exhibitionism is very thin. And here, I think, he definitely comes down on the edgelord side.
(Which, come to think of it, is probably unsurprising for a guy whose work was first published in porn mags because as long as the submissions had sexual content, they'd run anything.)
The book is a collection of surrealist stories. There's definitely a sense of style-over substance, but there's some interesting ideas: the sort of Cronenberg-like transformation which occurs in Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo: The Iron Man appears in one – except it involves audio tape and dicks – while elsewhere the ghost of Kafka beats off in the gloom as a man becomes a bug. There's thieves, amongst other oddities. Mostly, though, there's a big ole boner for DEATH.
And how! Paranoia Star also contains at least as much war fetishism (albeit slightly differently presented) as anything written by Roger Waters. There's a story about a child who wants to join the SS rather than hanging out with a clockmaker. There's intimations of atomic annihilation, and there's also a revisionist Japan-won-the-War tranche that features a proud leader riding atop a jizzing tank, moments before MacArthur is beheaded.
(At least he died with his sunglasses on, I guess.)
I have to say that this one didn't really hit home for me. I feel that longer-form works are better for Maruo, as it's in these that he can create a cohesive world. Here? It's just a funhouse of abortionate thrills that never really takes off. There's still the same loving detail to the artwork, but the larger pieces feel shoehorned in, even within their parent stories. It's a bit of a drag, and I don't think this is where you'd start with the illustrator.
(I'd prepare eye bleach wherever you start with him, mind.)

Reading this manga feels like getting lost between realities. Unnerving, scary. It made me feel gross at times, like I was reading something more perverse than porn. Heavy themes of Cronenberg-esque body horror, psychosis and sex. It's always sexual with Suehiro Maruo. And it can never be JUST a pair of tits. They have to be a pair of tits attached to a lady blinded because her head is sliced in half. It has to be a pristine pair of perky tits attached to a rotting corpse.
He constantly makes your mind go "Nice." followed by a well-meant "Gross." and right back to "Nice." again. There aren't a lot of authors that can make me actually physically sick, but this dude knows how. Squeezes his finger right in my amygdala and wiggles it cruely. I can't read a lot of Suehiro Maru in one sitting. He's kinda like a really strong cheese or a dark red wine. Have a little, enjoy it a lot.

El título que tiene en español es «Paranoia star». Es excelente encontrar en estas historias una parte genuina de la creatividad del autor (que podría ser incómoda para muchos lectores). Cuando lo hacen los escritores suele perderse el contenido en la incomprensión; en el caso de Maruo no sucede esto, pues ha sabido utilizar las herramientas del manga a su favor, generando un en entorno propicio que desconecta de la realidad al lector sometiéndolo a las entrañas de las perversiones del autor. Da la sensación de que ha sido la obra que más ha disfrutado hacer. Algunas historias son mejores que otras, pero en todas se percibe el demonio creativo de Suehiro.

No se muy bien como calificarlo. Sería la obra más floja de Maruo que he leído. El dibujo continúa siendo una obra de arte y las tramas son perturbadors como siempre pero algunas historias son realmente inconexas y asemejan sueños o pesadillas sin sentido. Una mezcla de ciencia ficción, gore y nazismo que no es para todos los gustos pero ya estoy acostumbrado a Suehiro Maruo y al ego guro, un movimiento transgresor y atrevido.

Num trabalho marcadamente pessoal, Maruo lida em histórias curtas com obsessões advindas da colisão entre ideologias e tecnologia. Algumas remetem directamente para a obra de P.K. Dick, com andróides a descobrir a sua condição não-humana ou seres humanos a quererem transcender os limites do corpo através de interfaces sangrentos com a máquina. Outra poderosa ideia nesta colecção prende-se com os perigos do militarismo e da crença cega em ideologias fanaticistas. O autor mostra um certo fascínio com o lado horripilante da submissão cega ao nazismo ou ao militarismo nipónico. Maruo assusta, repele e faz pensar com o seu traço peculiar, misto de estética manga e tradição europeia e o seu fascínio peculiar com as mutações impossíveis do corpo.

Primer contacto que tuve con el mundo dibujado del llamado "maestro del eroguro". Este recopilatorio, en lo estético, es hermoso, sobrecubierta, tapa semiblanda, buen gramaje de hojas y hasta una historia completamente a color.
El contenido, supongo, va en gustos. Son siete historias.
Sôjin: a todo color, narra sobre la lucha entre los comunistas de Mao y los robots capitalistas por el control de Shanghai en 1930. Hay un cristal que es robado por un ente misterioso y la ciudad explota.
La hormiga eléctrica: sobre un chico obsesionado con estudiar para un examen al que parece afectarle cada sonido exterior y termina masturbándose con la cinta de un cassette.
La hormiga eléctrica falsa: Un hombre sufre de acúfenos, escucha un aleteo de insecto en su oído. Se descubre que es un robot y termina en la basura junto a su amada, también robot.
El triunfo de la voluntad: un niño sueña con matar gente, escucha a su padre decir que no es su hijo y que es judío. Queda huérfano y es adoptado por un relojero, pero termina huyendo y se une al ejército nazi. Empieza a matar judíos por placer. En un momento los aliados los acorralan y un compañero suyo lo quiere violar. Caen bombas y le vuelan media cabeza.
El vampiro de la enfermería: cuento no ilustrado en el que Maruo habla sobre su infancia, su timidez, la muerte de su hermano y su forma de ver la vida.
El planeta de los Japos: la mejor historia. Se plantea el escenario de qué hubiera pasado si Japón ganaba la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Básicamente se muestra que hubiesen sido tan salvajes como los propios estadounidenses lo fueron con Japón.
Madre Misteriosa: con guión de Mutsuo Takahashi. Un poeta no puede escribir así que un flautista lo inspira con sus canciones que provocan sangrado nasal. Cuando termina su poema, el flautista le roba el rostro y los testículos.
El tomo cierra con un análisis de Takahashi que explica el papel del pene en la obra de Maruo, lo trata de autista y dice que hay que detenerlo cuanto antes.
Dato interesante: cada historia trae la sugerencia de una canción que se puede escuchar durante su lectura para crear clima.
Difícil de recomendar por lo críptico de la narrativa de Maruo, que a veces escasea en diálogos.
Insisto, la calidad es muy buena, pero no sé si esta es la mejor manera de arrancar con Maruo.

This is the third time reading this over the past year and a half, every time I like it more and more. Marou is incredibly adept at making visuals translate into physical sensation, especially well demonstrated in the second story. The feverish sensation of being unable to enjoy anything around you is portayed with a gusto of someone truly going through it (it in question being withdrawals).
I have also read Laughing Vampire, which is an upcoming re-read as well, both of which have convinced me that Marou is first and foremost a visual master. The stories themselves are great, but the true meat of these collections is in the gangly artstyle that feels sick, abominably sick, victorian diseases transposed into a post-atomic world. Most of the main characters are all feminine and beautiful, but with a hint of arsenic or bubonic plague hide in their distateful expressions. It's wonderful!
The only real gripe I have with the collection of stories is that the last two barely connect. On my first two read-throughs I hadn't even noticed them because the upload I keep reading has a massive block of untranslated Japanese I thought might've been post-scriptums and release information, but there's a two whole chapters that come after that. Oh boy, do I got an egg on my face!
But as mentioned, they feel like later adds to a more coherent whole about robots as alienation the first four build. The last one os pretty great despite my gripes but the second to last one is just kind of empty compared to the rest. It's so straight forward, which leaves it lacking on the thematic horror other stories here display so powerfully!
Overall, I think this is a somewhat hidden gem. It's transgressive in a way that feels genuinely seedy and dangerous, but isn't just empty shock tactics either. Real power electronics type read.

Darrer dels llibres de Maruo que em llegeixo (fins el moment). El volum està compost de vuit relats i dos textos: Sôjin; La hormiga eléctrica (Cuando mi flor cismática floreza); La hormiga eléctrica falsa; El triunfo de la voluntad; El vampiro de la enfermería (text); El planeta de los japos; Madre misteriosa i Comentario: "Expulsemos al chico masturbador", de Mutsuo Takahashi".
Es tracta d'una recopilació amb un alt contingut violent, eròtic/sexual i macabre, molt relacionat tot això amb el component bèl·lic i històric. Torna a sortir la història del Japó vencent a la Segona Guerra Mundial a l'Exèrcit nordamericà a "El planeta de los japos" i a "El triunfo de la voluntad" es fa una clara al·lusió al documental de la Leni Riefensthal i a les joventuts hitlerianes, amb algunes vinyetes de caire gairebé fotogràfic que també al·ludeixen a les imatges cinematogràfiques i a aquelles que representaven els cadàvers dels morts trobats al búnker on suposadament estava Hitler i on es va trobar la família de Goebbels i altres. Tornen a sortir també imatges de "El Gabinete del Doctor Caligari" un element ja molt recurrent en Maruo, així com Marlene Dietricht o els cadàvers amuntegats dels jueus, tots amb aquest tractament cinematogràfic de les vinyetes. Iniagualable la imatge final del nen amb el fusell a la mà i la meitat del cap mirant a càmera...
També és molt lloable la imatge del relat final ("Madre misteriosa"), en que el flautista es fa amb la meitat de la cara del poeta i se la posa per seguir entonant la seva melodia... Brutal!
El poeta Takahashi compon un text final en el que intenta arremetre contra Maruo dient que és un autor absolutament nociu i contraindicat per la seva violència extrema i el seu mal gust (ho diu amb altres paraules, molt més enrevessades). D'ell diu que té un interior fosc, que té un penis amb el que escriua mb tota mena de detall tot el que apareix en aquest volum i des d'aquest punt de vista analitza tot el seu contingut. És una manera molt interessant d'analitzar aquesta obra, sense dubte.
Es tracta d'una recopilació amb un alt contingut violent, eròtic/sexual i macabre, molt relacionat tot això amb el component bèl·lic i històric. Simplemente asqueroso (hablando en el sentido de las historias) por el contenido grotesco de cada una de ellas, no sabía acerca de él ero-guro y la verdad es un género bastante fuerte para quien no tiene estómago, SUEHIRO MARUO tiene que ser el representante más respetable a nivel de este género tan vomitito y con toques sexuales que no faltan sobre todo en la segunda historia, si aquella que habla de la masturbación de un chico con la cinta de un casette.
En palabras generales me gusto mucho el estilo pero tengo que integrarme más a lo que intenta mostrar el género, por lo que entendí es bastante visible el tema de la guerra y del Apocalipsis al que estaremos expuestos en un futuro tal vez cercano o tan vez lejano, en palabras generales un contenido fuerte pero interesante, no apto para asquientos jejejeje

I think it’s safe to say that I just didn’t get it. Mistranslation of just too psychological for me, either way I just can’t get behind it. Usually I’d reread something like this to completely appreciate the work and gather more answers but I’ll admit I can go my entire life without the need for anymore war, political, violent and surrealist work by this author. I also think this work has some bias. The art is great though.

حرفيا جونان كيف وضع الجانب الجنسي المختل عنده قليلاً لكن حقيقي و انه كيف واضح تأثير الفن الألماني و واضح اهتمامه
بالتعبيرية الألمانية جدا و لمحت اشياء كثير منها المخرجين و الأفلام و حتى الحرب.
كانت قراءة بالصدفة تماااما من شفته دخلت قرأته ولا دريت الهرجة اصلا لكن احلى شي مع تصادف مشاهدتي لفلم من التعبيرية الألمانية قبل يومين
فكان مثير للاهتمام لكن هل سأنصح احد ما يعرف شي بقرائته، قطعًا لا.
و بالنسبة للرسم كان مذهل و جريء جدا و يمكن بقرأ له عمل آخر.
مااعطيته تقييم لأن حسيت تحتاجوا رأي اكثر من التقييم

What I gathered from this collection of short stories is that there were political messages implied, but illustrated in the form of deranged, grotesque, fever nightmares. There also appeared to be a handful of cinema stills and nasty photographs of traumatic events. (Pretty sure at least one was a photo from a concentration camp..)
I’ve skimmed through a handful of Maruo’s works and this seemed to be one of the more palatable ones.. some content featured in this is extreme and almost nonsensical, but I got the feeling it was made in a way to provoke the reader to think more critically about what they’re viewing, and what messages are being sent.
My rating is mainly for the art style. Atrocious imagery aside, Maruo knows how to draw in a realistic and wildly unsettling manner.

Tenía un poleron con unas ilustraciones de este manga pero jamás lo había leído. Es un manga impactante y filoso pero de la manera en la que es más disfrutable por un adolescente. es difícil empatizar o sentir algo distinto al asco.
Por momentos es demasiado interesante y logra representar lo difuso del pensamiento psicótico. Lo mágico de pasar de lo interno o a lo externo y de lo corporal a lo histórico, siendo todo una unidad incomprensible.

Like most anthologies, a few of these feel like filler, but the best are up there with Maruo's strongest-ever work. The two fascist critiques in here (One of Nazi Germany and another of both Imperial Japan and America at once) are some of the best examples of incisive ero-guro art.

Estoy decepcionada, ya había leído otras obras del autor y con esta creo que dejaré de leerlo. Este manga es muy ambiguo y nacionalista para mi gusto, muy típico japones. No sentí simpatía de ningún tipo, pero se veía venir, si tenemos en cuenta que hace parte del eroguro

January 1, 2025Siempre es una movida leer y ver el arte de Maruo. "Paranoia Star" funciona como una especie de caleidoscopio a partir de diferentes relatos que retoma los tropos clásicos de su autor: la muerte, la sexualidad y el horror. Encima con banda sonora recomendada.
