This book is second one in the series. Like the first book I read it with my siblings my youngest brother is 8 then my other brother is 10 my sister is 12 and I’m 14. This book probably wouldn’t have been my choice if I was reading on my own however there was still enough action and story to keep me interested it’s a lovely book for all the family to read together.
After defeating the evil Grendilock and saving Cadno, Charlie is looking forward to a well-earned rest. However a familiar face appears from the realm of Fargone, Charlie's family is once again swept up into adventure. Along with his best friends Lippy, Roo and new magical friend Blodyn, Charlie must travel to Fargone to face the dreaded Draig, the shadowy monster that is slowly draining the life from the land - and uncover the lost secret.
The world building was amazing, and the connection you feel to the characters left me aching for more. The perfect amount of action, emotion, and adventure packed into it and my siblings kept trying to get mum to read extra chapters each night. Lee Newbery gives us magic and mystery alongside danger and determination. His characters are full of life, curious for adventures and unbelievably determined to succeed. But running alongside this are pockets of doubt that we can all relate to; am I good enough, am I strong enough, am I brave enough? I like the Fact even though Charlie has saved Cadno in the first book he is still unsure of himself and hasn’t become big headed. Charlie is a worrier, finds it hard to come out his shell, but is actually a great leader when he has the support and kindness of his friends and family, especially if Cadno is by his side - they build him up to have an inner faith and bravery that he struggles with on his own. This Book lots of imaginative twists and turns, some very amusing talking animals with attitude, nail-biting moments, and an authentic representation of same-sex parenting, plus a normalisation of LGBTQ+ but the fact Charlie has the same sex parents isn’t the main theme of the book. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 8 if reading alone but younger children would enjoy it but some tricky Welsh words and names. This book is great for anyone who likes Pokémon, and this series helped my reluctant reader of a brother really get into reading books. I would give this book 4 stars.
