Follow the epic tale of a young boy raised by a clan of Vampire assassins, given a choice to make two decisions in life. First, to choose between two women, one ruthless and vengeful yet captivating; the other the essence of purity and all that is beautiful. The second, to fall in love and grow old as a mortal or succumb to the desires of the Bakemono and become an immortal vampire.
“Penance” by H.C. Townes is the first part of what will surely become an exciting vampire series. But it will not be a series to which most vampire fans are accustomed. I love stories that take veer away from the stereotypical and create a sort of fraternal twin characterization of well-known monsters. Lead character, Jack, is human but raised by a vampire/ninja band known as the Bakemono. Before he became his mentor, Yamashita had murdered Jack’s father. Fortunately for Jack, Yamashita had a heart and adopted him, promising him a choice when he was older.
Townes does an excellent job of weaving an exciting primary plot line with a double romance, while several of his vampire characters portray human traits and feelings from love to hate and revenge. Jack is an excellent study in emotional ups and downs characterized by his youth. My favorite character, however, is the female vampire, Akari. Her wildly erratic shifts of emotions and feelings toward Jack and situations are exceptionally well written. On the whole, the story moves quickly and maintains a high degree of “page turning” qualities. I highly recommend “Penance” to all vampire and horror fans, but also for those readers who simply enjoy an entertaining, page turning read. I only hope that Mr. Townes did not make the mistake many first time self-publishers make, and that is book two is not more than a few weeks or a month from publication!
